Frostpunk 2 was an ambitious gambit. With survival achieved, and the introduction's excellently sinister advisor whispering evil Tory ideas, the whole city you built in Frostpunk is now just the headquarters for a sprawling expansion effort, and your rule is no longer absolute. Rather than retread the same "prepare for ultra-Winter" ground, your biggest obstacle will likely be your own people, now formed into shifting political parties, and looking outward with colonial eyes. The result is a complicated, laborious survival citybuilder that's two parts compelling, and one part frustrating for the wrong reasons.

I really wanted to like action adventure The Plucky Squire more than I do now, having given its charming 2D to 3D platforming a proper whirl. Yes, it's lovely to look at. Yes, hopping out of a storybook and making friends with an illustration on a coffee mug is cool. And yes, everyone can have a mildly fun time with its puzzles and fights. But that's the problem: who is everyone? At first I thought, "This game is for young kids and that's fine!", given its relative simplicity. Then I hit some puzzles and thought, "Ain't no kid figuring this out".

Then it hit me. It struggles to balance the fine line between being approachable for tiny tots and layered enough for people who've graduated from "goo goo ga ga" to "oo oo aa aa my back hurts". And that's down to how plucky you're allowed to squire at any given time, because it can be surprisingly limited and, sadly, a bit underwhelming.

You can't travel back to the 1980s. But what if I told you it was possible to gently warp your memories of that time? UFO 50 is a kart of 50 games that once existed for an old computer system, all lovingly restored by a gang of coders. The old console, of course, is a fiction. The LX-I never existed. But it's a fun pseudo-history against which to create a grab bag of small games (some throwaway, others mighty) all designed with a distinct 80s look. It's an exercise in adhering to an aesthetic. Like an oil painter working with a limited range of colours, the developers of this bundle have stuck to a 32-colour equivalent of the Zorn palette. Yet play a little of each game, and you start to sense the smirk of chronos. These games aren't stuck in the past, but they are enjoying a holiday there.

Having played the opening hour of Altus' Metaphor: ReFantazio – now mere weeks away from its October 11th launch – I think it's high time to correct a games previewing injustice. Namely, that the majority of its pre-release buzz has centred around its proximity to Persona, and not its far more entertaining quality of having the most gleefully bizarre RPG enemy design this side of Elden Ring's horn-tooting orbpeople.

Why is every blockbuster video game now some kind of live service game? Speaking as a clueless idiot, the explanation I find most convincing is that it's an attempt to bridge the gap between the returns publishers want from video games, versus how much we're able or willing to pay upfront. "Triple-A" projects now cost exorbitant sums to develop, partly thanks to wider economic inflation, but also because publishers have spent decades teaching players that every sequel has to be More and Shinier. Premium game prices have not risen in proportion, and investors want growth, as they do.

Live service games sneak around this difficulty by dragging out the time we spend playing them. Whether premium or free-to-play, they seek to install themselves as habits by means of regular, planned updates and additions. This is time that can be monetised by way of a subscription model, time in which other products may be sold to you, like skins and paintjobs, and time that becomes a commodity in itself, "engagement", which can be transmuted and exploited to various end. I'm not sure it's ever been expressed this way in any press release boast about longevity, but the unspoken principle/logical extrapolation seems to be that ideally, a live service game should keep us plugged in and plugging away till we die.

Strange Scaffold's newly released FPS I Am Your Beast is very fun for quite a few reasons, but chief among them is a deep appreciation for the poetry of good videogame violence. I'm not using the big P word just to throw out an overly worthy comparison to something we might associate with craft or beauty, but as a nod toward the game's playful application of what I previously called 'a euphoric splurge of murderous game verbiage' one morning where I had clearly eaten my wordy Weetabix. The way its hurled knives and curb stomps and inexplicable decapitations flow together have an assonant, almost Suessian quality to them.

But it's also, well, just a bit like Mad Libs. You play as Harding, a man who's mythical lethality is established very early on. The showing is there in the moment to moment, but the telling is conveyed through cute tricks like how everyone you meet is so deeply afraid of Harding that they loudly keep track of exactly what weapon he's holding at all times. The Mad Libs comes in through the fact that you can draw Harding a route between A and B, and it's a given that multiple heads are going to come unstuck from necks along the way. You're sort of just casually filling in the verbs that seem the most fun to you in the moment. One of the verbs is 'hornet'. Hornet is a verb now.

My Time at Evershine Makes Players Into Governors

At the beginning of September 2024, Pathea teased that its new My Time at Evershine game would appear on Kickstarter in September 2024, and now it shared a trailer for and details about the upcoming PS5, Xbox Series X, PC, and future Nintendo platform game. It also confirmed that this time around, we will be the governors of a new town in the universe.

The reason we hadn't heard of Evershine prior to this game is because it only came up in the three years since My Time at Sandrock. The Alliance of Free Cities set up the new North Development Plan town to stand against Duvos. Our role is to build up the town, by convincing people to move to town and set up facilities to help make the place more valuable and attractive. (Between 8-10 will be ones we can romance.) This can be done alone, though someone can run through the main game with up to four other people. There will also be mod support.

Here's the first trailer for the upcoming My Time at game. Part of the purpose of it is to show the new character design direction. Unlike past games, characters feature more realistic proportions. However, at the end there is a "wanted" poster for Everglade that uses the classic art style for the person's portrait.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubgnFCW2m3s&ab_channel=MyTimeseries

My Time at Evershine is in development for the PS5, "future Nintendo platforms" Xbox Series X, and PC, and the Kickstarter campaign will begin on September 24, 2024.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Cursed Clash Gets Kasumi Miwa as a Free Character

Bandai Namco announced that another free character will be released for Jujutsu Kaisen: Cursed Clash, and those of us who own the game will get to download and use Kasumi Miwa. She'll debut on September 26, 2024.

There's no trailer for Kasumi Miwa yet, so we don't know how she will work in Jujutsu Kaisen: Cursed Clash. However, there was an announcement on social media that showed her official art and teased how she'll work as a fighter. She will use Batto Sword Drawing when she attacks, which is her same Shadow Style from the manga and anime. She'll mainly fight with her sword, as well as use her New Shadow: Style Simple Domain.

Here is the official tweet going over the character:

https://twitter.com/JJK_videogame/status/1836042427016052818

In Jujutsu Kaisen, Kasumi Miwa is one of the Kyoto Jujutsu High characters. She's in the same year as Maki Zenin's twin Mai and Kokichi Muta. Quite a few of her fellow students also previously appeared as playable characters in the game as well. Among them are Aoi Todo, Noritoshi Kamo, and Momo Nishimiya. All three of them are third years at the school.

Pacific Drive Content Update

A new content update for Pacific Drive has added a ton of new settings allowing players to tweak the experience. New DLC cosmetics are also available as part of the new update.

The new settings added to Pacific Drive will allow players to customize the game experience how they choose. Seven new presets have been added that change the gameplay experience. Some of these presets will lower the challenge while others add extra brutal difficulty. Scenic Tour removes player death, lowers crafting requirements and nerfs hazards, while Joyride keeps hazard difficulty at the base game level while keeping crafting requirements low. On the other end, Nuclear Journey increases radiation on all maps, while Mechanic's Road Trip makes the car more susceptible to damage. For the ultimate challenge, Iron Wagon deletes your save file if you die. The Pacific Drive difficulty will allow you to keep the experience exactly as it was originally.

If these new settings are not to your liking, the Pacific Drive content update will allow you to tweak the individual elements to create your own custom difficulty. There are now 50 settings to play around with, allowing full customization of the experience. These include off-road handling difficulty, flat tire severity, storm speed, crafting requirements, and more. You can even make accidentally closing the trunk on your head kill you instantly if you wish.

Other new features added in the Pacific Drive content update include new cosmetics and the ability to paint all surfaces of the car, including the wheels. There is also paid DLC content adding cosmetics based on the game's various anomalies, allowing you to equip a sawblade hood ornament and a steering wheel that looks like an Anchor, among others. Finally, the content update will allow PC players to implement custom soundtracks using local audio files.

Pacific Drive is out now for PC and PS5. The new content update has also just released for the game.

Pokemon short animation celebrating Asian Mid-Autumn Festival by Shanghai Animation Film Studio

The Pokemon Company has published a new official short animation video in honor of the Mid-Autumn Festival. The video's title is "Multiple Pokemon and the Autumn Moon," and the China-based Shanghai Animation Film Studio produced this work.

This animation combines features from the Pokemon franchise with activities related to the actual festival, which is primarily marked by the month's full moon. It features multiple Clefairies dancing to the full moon, which has been a tradition shown in the franchise's entries, including the 2022 Switch game Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

The video also features the Autumn forms of Deerling and its evolution Sawsbuck, as well as night-themed Pokemon like Eevee's nighttime evolution Umbreon. It concludes with Lunala, the moon-themed legendary Pokemon that also served as the mascot of the seventh-generation entry Pokemon Moon, appearing in front of the full moon.

The new Pokemon Mid-Autumn Festival video is also available to watch right below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-pLxfL9IHU

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a harvest festival celebrated in China and other cultures across East and Southeast Asia. While the festival is celebrated the most by Chinese cultures, people in Japan also celebrate the day by holding Tsukimi (moon-viewing) parties. The 2024 Mid-Autumn Festival falls on September 17, 2024, which is also the date the Pokemon Company published this video.

Blood Lily Loop Blood Lily Loop Game Involves a Relationship with Cthulhu

Blood Lily Loop is a new RPG Maker horror game that has just been released for Steam. The game focuses on two friends who uncover dark secrets in a world inspired by the Cthulhu mythos.

Blood Lily Loop stars Sally, a fresh graduate setting out into the world. The story also features her best friend Lily, who may be hiding something from Sally, and Wiseman, a new friend from the university occult club. While the story is vague, we know that Wiseman has found a book known as The Dunwich Secrets for Sally, and the secrets Lily is hiding threaten to change the world they know.

The game was based on the developer's experience playing TTRPGs with friends, as well as Cthulhu lore. A record of these sessions, After the Snowfall, written by their friend Marikoro was used as the basis of the story of Blood Lily Loop. The game is a narrative-driven horror game built in RPG Maker but plays more like a point-and-click adventure or visual novel, where collecting items and speaking to NPCs advances the story. It's the latest of many RPG Maker horror games from the developer, who also worked on the Physical Exorcism and Peacemaker series, also available on Steam.

Like many other horror projects, Blood Lily Loop was developed in RPG Maker. The latest edition of the software, RPG Maker WITH, is set for a release outside Japan on October 11, 2024 for Nintendo Switch. This latest edition will include new features that will allow for greater collaboration on projects by allowing the sharing of projects. The latest PC version of the software is RPG Maker MZ, which released in 2020.

Blood Lily Loop is out now for Steam.

Zenless Zone Zero Caesar King

A new character trailer for Zenless Zone Zero has been released, this time showing off Caesar King. She's a member of the Sons of Calydon faction, who will play a major role in the version 1.2 storyline when it releases on September 25, 2024.

The new trailer shows off how Caesar King will fight in Zenless Zone Zero. She wields a sword and shield, which she combines for her attacks. With her sword, she uses slashes and piercing attacks to cut through enemies, while her spiked shield is used for area attacks and her Ultimate. The trailer also demonstrates that her shield can be used to block enemy attacks, emphasizing her role as a Defense unit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NihInQv5Iyk

The trailer also shows off more of the new location, the New Eridu Outer Ring, which we've heard about but have yet to visit in-game. The newest Bangboo addition, Red Moccus, also makes an appearance. During one combat sequence in the trailer, Caesar switches to him. This pig-faced Bangboo attacks using a vehicle made out of a tire, ramming into enemies.

Caesar King is a Physical Defense Agent in Zenless Zone Zero, and will be the focus of the update's first Signal Search banner. She will be accompanied by A-Rank Agents Anton and Piper, who are already in the game. Her W-Engine, Tusks of Fury, will also be available for a short time, along with Drill Rig and Roaring Ride for Anton and Piper respectively.

Caesar King will be joining Zenless Zone Zero as part of Version 1.2, where she and the rest of the Sons of Calydon will play a major role. Two Agents from this faction, Lucy and Piper, have already appeared in the game although they've yet to make an appearance in the story.

Zenless Zone Zero is out now for PC, PS5 and mobile devices. Caesar King will join the game as part of Version 1.2 on September 25, 2024.

Mimikyu Pokemon Plush Returns to Build-a-Bear Ahead of Halloween

Build-a-Bear announced that the Mimikyu Pokemon plush is back again. The ghost-type bundle is once again available in the online storefront

This time around, the character will cost someone $71. Build-a-Bear noted that, while the Pokemon plush has been available in-stores in the past, Mimikyu is currently an online exclusive. The listing also noted it can't be purchased unstuffed, unlike others from the company, so you have to get it as-is, with no scent, and with the five-in-one sound chip.

As before, the Mimikyu comes with the stuffed animal and two outfits. Since it doesn't have arms or legs, or at least visible due to its nature as a ghost type, there are no shirts or pants. Instead, there is a hat and bow tie set that looks more formal and a cape and hat set that looks more like sleepwear.

Here's how all of those items look:

We last saw a new Pokemon plush at Build-a-Bear back in June 2024. That's when the Munchlax stuffed animal appeared. Snorlax was already a part of the collection, though like Mimikyu it is not always available and is sometimes only sold as an online exclusive at this point.

The Mimikyu plush is now at Build-a-Bear online storefronts.

The Plucky Squire

The Plucky Squire has an intriguing premise. You are the titular Squire, a young man named Jot, who is on a quest to defeat the evil wizard Humgrump. However, the entire adventure takes place within a child's storybook, and as the adventure progresses, Jot finds a way to leave the book and head out into the real world.

There are essentially two narratives at play here. The first is the story of the book itself, where Jot the Plucky Squire does battle with a fiendish foe and saves the day like the hero he is. The second is one involving the child who owns the book, quietly building an extra adventure around their room, allowing Jot to traverse the paint pots, books and mugs that line this kid's desk. And if Jot fails in his mission, there's a real chance that this child may never see their creativity flourish in the future.

The gameplay in The Plucky Squire is similar to the 2D Zelda games. In fact, it's easy to see a direct line between the storybook sequences drawing influence from A Link to the Past while the real world segments draw more from the Switch remake of Link's Awakening. You explore the world, moving from page to page, battling enemies in a simple combat system while occasionally solving puzzles to progress.

There are some inventive puzzles here too. The game makes good use of its meta narrative, with Jot having to use his abilities to leave the book for a variety of purposes. Sometimes he has to retrieve an item from an earlier page, manipulate the words on the page or physically tilt the book to move something heavy.

You'll also get sequences where you get to explore the desk, where Jot can jump in and out of doodles on Post-It notes, clamber over stationery and interact with characters and worlds outside of his own. There's one moment involving an obvious yet legally distinct Magic the Gathering card that got a genuine chuckle out of me because of how much the art styles contrasted with one another.

Screenshot by Siliconera

This is where The Plucky Squire shines. There's an abundance of imagination here, with the world outside the book reminiscent of LittleBigPlanet or Yoshi's Crafted World, as our tiny protagonist clambers over hand-crafted levels. It's all falling apart at the visible seams and yet it's endearing and warm. Wandering these sequences, you can see the hidden child behind all this, imagining they're sending their favourite character on a mighty quest across their desk. Occasionally dinosaurs and space aliens can just show up on a whim because that's what this kid is into today. As someone who was glued, sometimes literally, to art shows on TV when I was growing up, I always appreciate games that bring back that unique brand of childhood creativity in their design ethos.

That's not to say the storybook itself lacks this same imagination. The world of Mojo is a silly one in all the best ways. They developers have crammed so many interesting locations into limited page space, and populated it with a weird and wonderful bunch of side characters. There's the population of Artia, who are all based on famous painters and artists, or the trolls whose entire culture is built around heavy metal. They're all endlessly charming, and the world is drawn with a vibrant and colorful art style. It's easy to see the animated series they could spin off from this.

The game even throws occasional minigames at you that completely change the genre. There's a Punch-Out!! knockoff, rhythm games and even a match-3 puzzle game, among others. They don't always work as well as their inspirations, but the shift is always a welcome one. They show off the team's imagination even more, and the way they're woven into the narrative and given a Plucky Squire interpretation is always entertaining.

Screenshot by Siliconera

Despite all this, though, The Plucky Squire has a serious problem with linearity. For a game that so heavily celebrates creativity and imagination, it feels jarring that it barely lets the player be creative or imaginative in how they approach the game. There's nothing wrong with linear games, and I've enjoyed plenty of them. However, the reason it stands out so much here is because of how determined the game is to keep you on a narrow path at all times, while hinting at possibilities that are just not there.

Puzzles typically have a single solution, one that's usually telegraphed in obvious ways. Portals between fiction and reality only show up where they need to. The desk in the real world shrinks to nothing when the focus needs to be on the book. The game even actively takes your abilities away when it decides you don't need them at that moment. I lost count of how many times my attempts to manipulate the book saw my ability to tilt it just…disappear.

It's frustrating, because there's so much promise for more. The steady acquisition of abilities suggests the room outside the book could have been an open space that only restricted your movement based on abilities, Metroidvania-style. I would have loved to explore more freely and see a greater contrast between the linear storybook and the infinite possibilities living outside it.

Screenshot by Siliconera

I also would have loved more experimentation with the puzzles. I would often unlock an ability, consider the many things I could do with it, only to find the ability is often worthless outside the specific story beats the game wants it to be used. I often wanted to flip back through the book and uncover secrets after obtaining an ability or new knowledge. On rare occasions I would be rewarded for this, but most of the time I'd simply be slowly turning through the pages only to have to slowly turn them all back, my curiosity entirely unfulfilled. There's also one distinct puzzle later in the game where I had to break a box, but my thought process of smashing it into a wall with the tilt function didn't work. The "correct" solution did make sense, but the lack of acceptance of creative alternatives was disappointing.

The main reason all this bothered me so much is simply because The Plucky Squire set up such a lovely little world. Both the fictional world of Mojo and the neat little touches of the real world were interesting. I want to explore them both a lot more, and see how far the concept can go. The team at All Possible Futures have crafted something wonderful here but it also feels like we're only seeing a fraction of what they're capable of.

Of course, if you're just here for a fun linear adventure, you'll have a blast. The Plucky Squire is an imaginative romp full of joy and wonder despite how much it holds your hand in the process.

The Plucky Squire is out now for PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X/S.

Review: Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster Is Timeless

It is difficult to believe that Dead Rising is 18 years old at this point. It's not just because the recent Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster makes the game look gorgeous, all while retaining the style and aesthetic of the original. For an 18-year-old game, the gameplay loop and various zombie-killing and photography mechanics feel as fresh now as they did back on the Xbox 360.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster opens up with photojournalist Frank West traveling by helicopter to the quaint town of Willamette, Colorado. He intends to cover breaking news of the rumored riots occurring at the town. Upon his arrival, Frank witnesses some strange violent scenes, but encounters no riots. He discovers that the reason behind no information coming out of the town is a military quarantine put in place by the US National Guard. After making a deal with his pilot, Frank descends on the helipad of the Willamette Parkview Mall, with only 72 hours to find out the truth and be the first to get his hands on the scoop. It doesn't take long until a horde of zombies breaks into the shopping mall, attacking anyone and everyone in sight. With both his life and the truth on the line, Frank takes it upon himself to help anyone he can, maybe take advantage of the situation, and snap a few photos that might look nice on his Pulitzer-winning story.

Initially, Frank doesn't come off as a nice person. He starts as a self-interested and aloof man that's only in Willamette to further his career at the expense of other people's suffering. It is only through witnessing the horrors brought upon by the zombies and the people behind the outbreak that he steps into an active role helping the survivors of the shopping mall, and even makes friends with the DHS agents working the case. Even though some of the psychopath boss characters might come off as goofy or comedic, most of them are treated with a degree of understanding and are rarely used as the butt of the joke.

It is usually in the aftermath of the fights that Frank gets to see how the sustained trauma and stress of the zombie outbreak has affected these people, disrupting their lives in drastic ways and making them hold onto extreme and distorted versions of reality in order to cope with the circumstances. While Dead Rising is a comedy horror game, the game takes the subject matter and its characters seriously. The first game in the series is particularly poignant in the way it lays out a critique of rampant capitalist consumerism and its relationship with military imperialism, particularly regarding to America.

The gameplay is where most of the comedy shines through. During the course of the 3-day story mode, Frank needs to balance rescuing survivors, fighting zombies, taking photos, and completing each main case. Doing so will provide with Prestige Points (PP) that increase his overall level and unlock different stat upgrades and skills. The level up rewards are somewhat randomized, with some being available at the lower level pools and some available on higher levels. Escorting survivors has been noticeably improved from the original game, with the companion AI being much better at evading zombies and following Frank. There's still some level of friction when helping friendly NPCs, but it's part of what makes playing Dead Rising thrilling. The survivor escort quests in general have received an overhaul, with characters having favorite items and becoming more responsive and better at following Frank if you give them the weapons or food they enjoy. NPCs can also offer hints, point to hidden PP photo ops, and even tell where secret weapon stashes are.

There are countless ways to kill zombies in Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. From a variety of more traditional melee weaponry and guns to sports equipment, home appliances, and even benches and anything in the environment that Frank can interact with. Combat is as simple as picking up a weapon and whacking a zombie until it stops moving, which can take from a single hit to a few depending on the effectiveness of your tool. One of the most notable quality of life changes in the remaster is the inclusion of an updated control scheme. While the original 2006 game is great, it doesn't control as smooth as some might remember. The modern controls make Dead Rising feel amazing. Special moves are mapped to the right bumper and a face button press, and the zombie grab reaction is assigned to the face buttons.

However, killing zombies isn't all there is to life. As a journalist, Frank also needs to stay on top of his game and take photos of anything and everything that might offer some value in his story. This means striking images of drama, brutality, horror, or comedic outtakes. It's important to note that the erotica genre is missing from the Deluxe Remaster. However, this isn't a massive loss and it doesn't meaningfully change the way the photo mechanics works. New to this remaster are also the different camera upgrades are available throughout the mall. Some include a flash option as well as depth of field settings, and they are a neat addition.

Another new addition to Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is an expanded dub. Now Frank and every NPC speaks during gameplay and side missions. Although this comes with a downside. The original English voice cast has been replaced by a new one. Terence J. Rotolo doesn't return as Frank's voice actor. I generally liked Jas Patrick as Frank, even though some of Frank's most iconic lines sound a bit off coming from someone different. The iconic licensed music tracks return to DRDR with an option for streamer mode that disables them to avoid copyright issues.

On a final note, RE Engine makes Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster look beautiful. The lighting in particular has seen a massive upgrade compared to the original game, which looked flatter in comparison. It is clear by looking at both games side by side that there has been a massive upgrade. However, the new remaster left me convinced that the this is how the original game looked liked back in 2006. The new character models are fantastic, and while Frank doesn't look exactly the same and his new design ages him a bit, I think he looks the part. In fact, I'd say that he looks exactly how his original promotional design depicts him.

Dead Rising was great in 2006 and it continues to be great as Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. The tension of going through the main story cases, escorting survivors to safety, and trying to complete all side objectives all while managing your in-game countdown is as exhilarating as it was 18 years ago. Perhaps the most impressive thing this new remaster achieves is making me believe that this is how the original 2006 game played. The QoL additions are a game changer and I can't imagine going back to the original control scheme. Unfortunately, some characters in the new English dub don't sound as good as the original cast. On the brighter side, that is probably the only sore point I can find in the remaster.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster will release on September 19, 2024 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC via Steam.
