The Assassin's Creed Mirage Steam launch is suddenly imminent

According to a new Ubisoft listing, the Assassin's Creed Mirage Steam launch is imminent. Mirage was released last year exclusively via Ubisoft Connect and the Epic Games Store on PC, but now a brand new listing indicates that an October 2024 Steam release is coming. Assassin's Creed Valhalla was the last game in the series to come to Steam, two whole years after launch. Now, as Ubisoft gears up for day one Steam launches again, Mirage is also making the leap of faith.

Sega is a publisher usually known for series like Sonic that focus on platforming and other genres. But Sega surprisingly has some excellent Japanese role-playing games worth checking out. Here are the best recent Sega JRPGs across PS3, PS4, and PS5 alike. Note that I am excluding Atlus JRPGs, even though the company is owned by Sega, since they deserve their own dedicated list.

Best Recent Sega JRPGs on the PS3

The PlayStation 3 didn't receive a ton of JRPG support from Sega since most of it went to handhelds at the time like the DS, PSP, and 3DS. However, there are some standouts like Resonance of Fate. This game has one of the sleekest combat systems I've ever seen with a pretty intriguing story, too.

There are also games like Shining Resonance for a flawed but still solid enough, more traditional 3D action RPG feel. That said, the best PS3 Sega JRPG comes from the original Valkyria Chronicles. This alternative World War II-set game features a flexible tactical RPG movement system that is fun to use and an emotional storyline.

Best Recent Sega JRPGs on the PS4

The return of Phantasy Star Online happened with Phantasy Star Online 2. It is a free-to-play MMORPG on PS4 that is worth checking out for a bit. There is so much content to this game that you will not find anywhere else on this list. And there is always more on the way, especially when it comes to great cosmetics and crossover events.

Sakura Wars also made a grand return in the West on PS4 with the 2019 version. The mix of mech combat and visual novel dating sim-like storyline is quite unique. If you want a bit of romance amidst the dramatic story about women fighting for their lives in a war, this is one to check out.

Then there is my personal favorite on this console: Valkyria Chronicles 4. Not only is this the best in the series but it is up there as one of my favorite Sega JRPGs of all time. The combat is strategic, deep, and full of challenging missions and decisions. Plus, the story is one of the most underrated on the PS4 with its colorful cast of soldiers and gut-wrenching twists.

Best Recent Sega JRPGs on the PS5

Even though the PS5 is well into its lifecycle, there aren't too many Sega JRPGs not from Atlus on it. The core games come from the Like a Dragon series, including the one that started a massive shift for the franchise in Yakuza: Like a Dragon. This game switched out the brawler gameplay from previous titles for Dragon Quest-inspired turn-based combat with jobs and more.

It also has one of my favorite stories in gaming, focusing on the outcasts of outcasts as they rise up to get revenge. Then there is also its sequel in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. It continues the story of new protagonist Ichiban while bringing back Kiryu for a fascinating trip in Hawaii. The story is a bit rougher around the edges at times, but the turn-based gameplay is refined and the content is exceptionally varied.

Let us know what your favorite SEGA RPG is below!

Tokyo Babylon Volume 4 Offers More Hints About Seishirou

In the early volumes of the Tokyo Babylon manga, CLAMP is pretty tactful about Seishirou Sakurazuka. We get hints that there is more to him than there appears. These grow more obvious, until there are substantial actions like the one in the third volume. With the newly rereleased volume four of Tokyo Babylon, it's much more clear what Seishirou is capable of and what this means for Subaru Sumeragi.

Editor's Note: There will be spoilers for volume 4 of the Tokyo Babylon manga and Seishirou below.

Throughout much of the Tokyo Babylon manga up to this point, Seishirou largely seemed a potential force for good. Yes, he's hiding something. We definitely are aware of his own powers and strengths. But he's still maintaining his identity as a veterinarian, is being kind toward both Subaru and Hokuto, and seems to adore Subaru. When he's acted in past volumes, it's been to assist in some way. With this latest entry, we're getting more insights into what we should really expect from him. Plus, it's handled in such a way that we're forced to compare his still considerate actions with more ominous ones.

Things begin with the "Crime" case. After seeing a shrine torn down, we begin with Subaru ruminating about it with Hokuto and Seishirou about what it means when a seal like that is removed. It's honestly a sweet sort of moment, even though repercussions are being considered. Because we have Seishirou providing food and offering to make a meal later for the young onmyoji. And it keeps seeming like a positive series of interaction when Subaru shows up at Seishirou's door after a very rough day. The one encourages the other. Has food for him. Reassures him.

But it's at the end of this first chapter of volume 4 of the Tokyo Babylon manga that we start to get real, substantial proof that things are not good. After Seishirou puts an exhausted and depressed Subaru to bed, he promises to protect him and stay by his side. Subaru thanks him. When Seishirou leaves, he looks in a mirror that cracks and ominously suggests he'll win the "bet" the two made. While the early parts of the next case, called "Save," begin with Hokuto seemingly encouraging Subaru's relationship with Seishirou while also questioning if the older man is as kind as he seems.

This foreshadowing continues with a meeting between Subaru and his grandmother. In addition to tasking him with investigating the Ms Institute, she shares with him a warning about being swept away by the cherry blossoms. Seishirou's name and the mysterious Sakurazukamori assassin's aside, it seems further uncertain. CLAMP leaves us in the dark a little yet again, even though there's more further movement on Hokuto's part.

It's the end of volume 4 of the Tokyo Babylon manga that shows how well that Seishirou pacing paid off. Everything leading up to the end of the "Save" storyline is preparing us for what we learn as it draws to a close. The future for everyone is still uncertain, of course. But there is so much new insight into Seishirou here and pay off that it feels quite satisfying.

Volume 4 of the Tokyo Babylon manga is available now, and Yen Press will release volume 5 on November 19, 2024.

Build iconic FPS weapons in Gunsmith Simulator, as it finally hits Steam 1.0

I've recently been replaying Sniper Elite 5, and it's reminded me how much I enjoy building virtual weapons. Ghost Recon Future Soldier also nailed it over a decade ago, as you select barrels, triggers, stocks, and scopes that change your firearm's stats - and nothing quite beats it. It's one thing to add attachments, but physically building what you'll use in the field piece-by-piece, and surviving by the skin of your teeth because of it, is quite the payoff. While it might not have the violence, Gunsmith Simulator is finally out in Steam 1.0, and it's filled with plenty of weapons to accessorize.

Aria of the Beech Forest Manga Follows a Sweet Witch

In folklore and fairy tales, we often hear about hear about witches living in woods. They're away from society for various regions. In the manga Aria of the Beech Forest, this is also the case, but this coming of age manga instead explores the hows and whys of the life of a young witch and what her future holds as she suddenly gets a chance to encounter the wider world.

Editor's Note: There will be some spoilers for the first volume of the Aria of the Beech Forest manga below.

Aria of the Beech Forest starts simply enough. A young woman named Aria is living alone in a cottage in Ireland. There's a massive snowstorm raging outside. She's trying to keep herself occupied and warm. She seems movement and, upon investigating, discovers it is a talking white wolf. The girl? She's a witch. Which is why she lives alone. Gwyn? Well, it seems like there's a reason this wolf can talk, though his story isn't being revealed just yet.

Upon talking with the wolf for a while, they come to an agreement. During the harsh winter, Gwyn will stay with her. She doesn't question the mystery behind why he's able to speak or how there were human footprints alongside him that disappeared. He doesn't pry too much into her life or lecture, beyond learning that her recently deceased grandmother said it was safer for witches to remain isolated.

However, it's because of this interruption and series of events that things get interesting for Aria. She so enjoys his company and not being alone that a new deal is struck by the end of the season. He'll stay as a permanent resident. It's an impetus for change, on her part. A positive one? Perhaps! I'm optimistic about it, especially since there's such an uplifting tone to this good-natured witch manga.

While Aria is regularly visited by her grandmother's son, who is also a merchant who sells the herbs and medicines she makes, she's been entirely alone. She's unaware of the outside world. In fact, it isn't until a few chapters in and her first encounter with two ordinary humans that we realize this isn't some period piece in a fantasy world. Aria is living during modern times in an isolated Irish cottage. (Her uncle Theodore even uses an Instagram-like clone network.)

Which means that the enjoyment and coziness of Aria and the Beech Forest comes from seeing how this young witch lives in the manga, and how she grows as an individual by discovering how much more there is in the outside world. While her grandmother encouraged living in an isolated fashion, everything we're starting to see in this first volume suggests that maybe that isn't the best and right choice for Aria. The interactions between characters and asides when we see their perspectives or thoughts makes it seem like everyone is curious about her future and hoping for the best for her. And maybe, just maybe, the best involves opening up more.

Aria of the Beech Forest seems like it is shaping up to be a pleasant, coming of age manga about a young witch who is going to get to open herself up to people and experiences in the wider world. Yes, there are hints about mysteries that will be revealed. However, it seems like it's poised to become a happy and cozy sort of story, with any reveals instead potentially being positive ones. Or, at the very least, learning experiences.

Volume 1 of Aria of the Beech Forest is available now via Yen Press, and volume 2 of the manga will debut on November 19, 2024

Review: Crypt Custodian Gets That Simple Is Best

I appreciate when a Metroidvania game tries to refine and polish its mechanics, or when it mixes things up with a familiar formula. Crypt Custodian is one of those Metroidvania style titles that shines in its simplicity. While the game felt closer to an isometric platforming title, the blend of genres mixes nicely in this game. Add a cute premise and an adorable cat hero to boot, and you have me on board.

Pluto is a good boy, the best one to ever be. Unfortunately, time has come for Pluto to depart to the land of the dead. After meeting Kendra, the guardian of the land of the dead, Pluto is declared to be perhaps not the best boy ever. Sentenced to clean the afterlife forever, Pluto now has to make new friends in order to break into the afterlife's Palace that the good ghosts inhabit, where a mirror into the land of the living allows them to visit them and guard over their loved ones, in order to make things right for himself and every other stranded ghost left outside.

While thinking about adorable animals and pets meeting their end is not my priority, Crypt Custodian handles this well, and the premise is simple and treated with levity. As Pluto meets new characters and animals, players will also find polaroid photos of their lives and how these animals met their end. The little stories contained in the polaroids offered context into these characters in life, and collecting all the photos paid off in the end.

Exploring the world of Crypt Custodian is really fun. Pluto starts as a fast and somewhat agile character to control, and as you progress through the game and get upgrades and new tools to navigate the world, he becomes even more agile and control gets more precise. During combat, his main tools are a very fast melee attack and a reliable dodge, as well as some special moves that Pluto can activate after filling the special meter. These are really useful and I found myself using them very often, as the meter filled very quickly. Enemies usually take few hits to take down, but so does Pluto. Because of that, fighting depends on smart positioning and knowing what each enemy is capable of in order to take them out strategically. Some encounters can be challenging, especially in some challenge rooms and with some of the curses you can acquire in order to get resources. However, I never found the challenge level frustrating, and it was always enjoyable to do all the side content and completely exploring each area.

There's a nice variety of mobs to dispose of, with each area having completely unique types of enemies. They all boil down to different flavors of melee or ranged damage, but the way each one attacks, the timings, or even their reaction to being damaged or defeated is different. This made every new area exciting to explore and get used to both platforming and fighting.

Combat is not the only thing you'll be doing, as exploring is a major part of the experience. The isometric perspective is refreshing for a Metroidvania style game, and platforming in Crypt Custodian is very precise. The game offers very useful indicators for when you will land after a jump and the minimalist visual style makes it so that there's never confusion on where enemy hits will appear. My eyesight can get tired easily or I can struggle to read the screen if too much is happening. But since Crypt Custodian keeps things clean and readable this wasn't a problem, and I found no frustration in the game's controls and readability.

Each area has a unique art style and color palette, with my favorite ones being the house basement, the abandoned theme part, and the blue area with the astral shifting enemies, both in terms of gameplay and aesthetics. The latter in particular has a fantastic gimmick where dashing will shift enemies to different dimensions, making some available to interact with and others impossible until you shift again. Crypt Custodian has some really neat ideas going on. The minimalist style doesn't allow for a ton of expression in its art, but I still found it appealing in its own way. The afterlife felt mysterious and inscrutable, and the simplicity of the style conveyed that nicely.

It's in the character and enemy sprites where the more expressive art style appears with Pluto and his friends being incredibly cute and funny. Pluto is always a joy to watch, from its funny expression to the way it moves. In fact, losing the early dodge for a more reliable one made me a bit sad, as seeing him tumble around was very funny and I loved it. Enemies all have a similar style, being usually different variations of bug-like designs. Their designs are generally very readable and a glance helps you guess what they might be able to do. However, it's boss designs where the game gets even whackier and avant garde. Early game bosses look quite normal, but late game there are some really funky looking dudes and spooky creepy crawlies, with the Moon Man looking straight out of a nightmare one could have had as a child.

I really appreciate Crypt Custodian for knowing its strengths and exploring them throughout the roughly 10 hours it took me to complete the game. The mix of Metroidvania and isometric platforming elements mix really nicely in a title where precision and readability are king. You won't find a nail-biting challenge in this game, but some extra post-game boss rush modes can prove really demanding and give you that edge. And while the subject matter can be a bit much if you're sensitive the same way I am to pet an animal death, Crypt Custodian made me look back fondly and remember my childhood pet and every animal I've ever loved.

Crypt Custodian is readily available for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam.

bunny garden event

Qureate announced that the first real-life event for Bunny Garden will run on December 28, 2024 in Japan. The name of the event can loosely translate to "Bunny Garden 2024 Special Event: Paradise For Gentlemen."

The event will take place at the Humax Cinema in Ikebukuro, Japan. Tickets cost 5800 JPY ($39) for a normal one and 9900 JPY ($66.60) for one with bonuses. There will also be two shows. The first one will take place from 12:15 PM and the second one will be from 4:00 PM. You will need to be over 17 years old to participate. When you enter, you'll need to show staff your ID. On the off-chance that you're sixteen or under, and you have a ticket, you will not get a refund so please keep that in mind.

Tickets are available via SPWN. As a note, the SPWN states the event starts on December 27, 2024 from 7:15 PM and 11:00 PM. But since the promotional material says December 28, 2024, it's likely that the times on SPWN are inaccurate.

During the event, people will have the opportunity to partake in collaboration foods and drinks, as well as view an original story and a singing part. This will not be a live performance with the voice actresses. Rather, it seems that people will go and watch pre-recorded videos together on a big screen. You'll hear different songs and experience a different story depending on which showing you go to, and the second one from 4:00 PM will have the girls act a lot closer to the viewer.

fate/grand order 30 million downloads campaign

Lasengle will be celebrating Fate/Grand Order passing 30 million downloads with Oberon returning to the gacha for a limited time. Oberon is one of the best support Servants thanks to his powerful skills, so those who don't have him yet should try and pull for him while they have the chance. [Thanks, Dengeki Online!]

The 30 million downloads campaign in Fate/Grand Order will run until November 30, 2024. It started on October 4, 2024, right after the announcement stream for it. During this time, there are daily login bonuses, as well as a triple chance of getting a success or great success when levelling up your Servants. As well, you'll be able to challenge any weekly quest for a third of the AP. In a more permanent change, you'll be able to get more Mystic Codes, summer costumes, Command Codes, and Craft Essences via Da Vinci's Workshop.

As mentioned earlier, Oberon is in the Fate/Grand Order gacha right now. Aside from him though, 26 Servants who previously headlined the download milestone campaigns will return. This line-up includes Merlin, Jeanne d'Arc Alter, Miyamoto Musashi, Nero Bride Scathach, Melusine, and Kiara. By clearing certain conditions, you'll also be able to choose a 5-star for free. There are a total of 41 to choose from, and you can only pick one that's in the permanent pool. In order to permanently get a free standard 5-star, you'll need to claim your Servant via the anniversary ticket. Then, within a certain time frame, level them up to Level 60 and reach Level 5 friendship with them. After that, they'll permanently join your roster.

Fate/Grand Order is readily available on mobile devices and the 30 million downloads campaign is only on the Japanese server. There's no word yet on when we'll see the event in the global version.

unicorn overlord rosalinde popular

During a special program to commemorate Unicorn Overlord surpassing a million sales, Atlus revealed the most popular characters in the game. Rosalinde ended up taking first place in the user poll. [Thanks, Dengeki Online!]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIA7yEF3RII

Here are the top ten most popular characters in Unicorn Overlord, as voted on by players:

  1. Rosalinde
  2. Melisandre
  3. Berengaria
  4. Virginia
  5. Alain
  6. Eltolinde
  7. Yunifi
  8. Scarlett
  9. Chloe
  10. Travis

Nigel was also on the list, in between Berengaria and Virginia, but he's not technically part of the ranking. People picked their favorite characters based on design, personality, and their usefulness in combat. For example, a person talked about how they liked Rosalinde for her powerful skills and how she was able to remain in Alain's main party the entire time in their playthrough. Another person said that they picked her for her smart yet funny, strong yet straightforward, and motherly yet delicate personality.

Other polls in the program focused on people's favorite classes, scenes, music tracks, and stages. Atlus also revealed people's favorites for the Rite of the Covenant. Berengaria was the most popular for those outside of Japan, and Scarlett won on the Japanese poll. During the program, Kazuki Ura and Takayuki Ishii even gave a live performance of Alain performing the Rite with Nigel.

Unicorn Overlord is readily available for the PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X.

neko atsume 2

You can now pre-register for Neko Atsume 2, which has a set release date of October 20, 2024. Pre-registrations are open via the App Store and Google Play.

Images are available on the app stores to show you what the game will look like. The overall look of the game is the same, featuring the cats in the yard enjoying the toys you put out. However, there are some new rooms and looks. You'll also be able to travel to your friends' yards and vice versa, meaning that there is a new social element to the formerly-solo experience. Other new mechanics include toys breaking (meaning you'll have to fix them), and new cats that you can only discover through special interactions.

Neko Atsume 2 will be the sequel to Neko Atsume, an idle game in which you collect cats. It first came out on October 20, 2014, which means that the sequel (which initially had a Summer 2024 release windows) will come out exactly a decade later. In this game, you collect silver or gold fish to buy toys and food. Afterwards, you set them in the yard. Cats will visit and hang out for a while when you next enter the app, and you can use the fish they give you to buy more rewards.

Neko Atsume 2 will come out on October 20, 2024 for mobile devices.

Revelations Persona

Atlus is practically a household name in the JRPG genre these days thanks to games like Shin Megami Tensei V, Persona 5, and Metaphor: ReFantazio, but it has been doing its thing for decades. Whether you're a longtime fan looking to revisit old favorites or a new one who wants to see the origins of the publisher, we've got some of the best retro Atlus JRPGs for you to check out.

Shin Megami Tensei

Shin Megami Tensei

While this isn't the first game in Atlus's Megami Tensei franchise, it's one of the most important ones. Initially released on the Super Famicom, Shin Megami Tensei was later ported to many platforms including PlayStation, Game Boy Advance, and even mobile phones. The only official English release was on iOS and is no longer available. It's an interesting game, as you can see the foundation of many of today's Atlus hits.

Revelations: Persona

Revelations Persona

If you love Persona, this is definitely one of the best retro Atlus JRPGs to play. The Persona series got a massive overhaul with Persona 3, rocketing the series to its current stardom. These earlier games in the series might not be as stylish, but they deliver just as powerful a punch. Persona first released on the PlayStation and is included in the PlayStation Classic mini-console. Atlus also remade it for the PlayStation Portable.

Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers

Soul Hackers

The second game in the Devil Summoner series, Soul Hackers is a fantastic slice of 1990s cyberpunk. You play as a member of a hacker group called the Spookies, who must battle against a demonic invasion that threatens the city. The gameplay is similar to the first few games in the Shin Megami Tensei series, with first-person exploration and turn-based battles. What makes Soul Hackers one of the beset retro Atlus JRPGs is in its style, story, and excellent world design. Originally released on the SEGA Saturn, it was eventually ported to the PlayStation and the Nintendo 3DS.

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Children - Black Book & Red Book

Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children

In the wake of Pokémon's massive success, almost every publisher rolled up its own Pokémon-style game. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Children was Atlus' take, starting on Game Boy Color with this pair of titles. Atlus released a PlayStation remake, and the series would continue on to the Game Boy Advance. Both versions tell slightly different stories, but either way you're searching for a family member in the world of demons. You'll have to assemble a team of demons to fight on your behalf, naturally.

Revelations: The Demon Slayer

Revelations The Demon Slayer

One of the earliest in the Shin Megami Tensei series to get localized, Revelations: The Demon Slayer is also one of the most straightforward. This Game Boy Color JRPG differs from others in the franchise, using a fantasy setting. In series tradition, you'll have to recruit demons and fuse them to create stronger ones. As usual, you can count on a lengthy, challenging adventure. Atlus doesn't often dip into the realm of traditional fantasy, so you might want to check out one of its first attempts.

Let us know what your favorite retro ATLUS JRPG is below!

metaphor streaming guidelines

Atlus has revealed the streaming guidelines for Metaphor: ReFantazio for those who want to share content of the game when it comes out on October 11, 2024. The full list of restrictions and permissions is available on the company website.

For starters, you can stream to any blog or video sharing website so long as it's for commercial use. If people have access to the full game, they cannot share any content past the prologue until the game comes out. In order for people to enjoy the game on their own, Atlus asks that people tag their videos appropriately if there are spoilers in them.

When posting videos, you should include some sort of transformative feature, such as commentary. In other words, Atlus doesn't allow for people to simply post cutscenes, trailers, or music. You can post highlight clips, though. The rest of the guidelines are similar to previous ones for games such as Persona 5 Royal. Atlus doesn't let people gain compensation outside of what streaming services would compensate you through ad revenue, for example, and you cannot slander any third-party users or organizations during your livestreams or videos. Finally, you can't engage in any illegal/illicit activities or use mods. If Atlus requests that you take down content, you must comply.

Metaphor: ReFantazio will come out on October 11, 2024 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC.
