Ys X: Nordics launched in Japan last year to some critical acclaim, and it has now made its way both west and onto PC. The PC version has a bunch of graphical upgrades and keyboard support, but also - unlike predecessor Ys IX: Monstrum Nox which got co-op as a cheeky post-launch bonus on PC - Ys X: Nordics has local co-op from day one.

Babbdi was one of our favourite games from 2023. STRAFTAT is a multiplayer shooter from the same developers and it's exactly as transportive as its singleplayer cousin; not transportive to an unknowable brutalist city, but to the year 2000 - in the best possible way. It's out now.

Flowstone Saga

Sometimes, explaining the appeal of a game can take a lot of effort. You might talk about how the gameplay systems work together, or how the setting and plot build up, or how particular mechanics blossom after spending some time with them. Then you have games that make it easy like Flowstone Saga. It's a JRPG where the battles are Tetris, to put it plainly. There's a lot more to talk about, but I suspect many will be sold on the game with just with that basic description alone. Luckily, Flowstone Saga does a good job of delivering on its fun concept.

The protagonist of the tale is Mirai, a young woman who has only recently come to live in the town of New Riverstone. The town is part of Ocean's End, a backwater place that doesn't see a whole lot of people coming or going. Mirai and her pet Sprig are out adventuring one day when they stumble across a buried ruin. Looking for a means of defending herself against a pursuing monster, Mirai happens to grab the Flowstone. A mysterious energy contained within grants her a number of powers, not the least of which being the ability to fight. This discovery naturally kicks off a series of events that will not only rock the world but also reveal secrets about Mirai herself.

Flowstone Saga makes a great first impression. It visuals are lush, calling to mind some of the better 16-bit games in the genre. Its soundtrack is energetic and catchy. You don't have to wait around long before you're thrown into your first battle, since the story starts in the middle of the action before flashing back. There's a brisk pace to it right from the get-go. The initial story set-up is certainly intriguing, and the dialog in these opening scenes reads well. A solid start, to be sure. For the most part it keeps things up through the course of the adventure, which takes about ten hours to complete.

Before we get to the many other aspects of the game, I want to go over the battle system. It's the eye-catching element, after all. While the shapes aren't a one-to-one with those of Tetris, anyone who has played that game will get the basic gist of what to do without being told. You have to make lines to attack your foes. The urge to set up big plays might be strong, but don't fool around too long. The enemies will be launching attacks of their own, and they aren't going to wait. Those attacks deal damage of course, but they'll also often throw clutter into the play field. That clutter has varying effects, and none of them are good for you.

Screenshot by Siliconera

So far, so good. There's more to it than that, however. The pieces will also carry Link Crystals, and if you place the blocks in such a way that three of them touch, you'll gain Heat. That makes your attacks more powerful, so you'll want to line those Link Crystals up as often as possible. As you make matches, you'll fill up a gauge that allows you to use one of a selection of powers. When you start you'll only have one, but as you play you'll get access to more. These can do things like give you a straight line piece or throw pieces onto the field that, when matched, will hit your enemies with an elemental attack. There's also the Flask, which again tosses pieces onto the field that give varying effects when matched.

Essentially, there's quite a bit going on here besides a simple game of clearing lines. It can be a little overwhelming until you get the hang of things, but unless you go right for the hardest of the three selectable difficulty levels from the start you should have it sorted before things get hairy. Just keep matching those lines and you'll be fine. When you hit the point where you're not fine, you can start making use of the other systems. If you play on the recommended difficulty, that point may not ever come. Most players who have some experience with both sides of the mash-up here will likely want to play the second difficulty level at a minimum to keep things exciting. You can change at any time though, so feel free to take it easy while you learn.

Flowstone Saga is far bigger than its battle system. That's even true for the Tetris-style portion of the game, which is also put into use for gathering resources and completing build-a-shape puzzles you'll find scattered about. Mirai's hometown of New Riverstone plays a major role in the game. It's where she picks up new quests, mingles with the townsfolk, buys new equipment, or just chills in her personally-decorated house. As you play the game and complete requests, the town will grow and gain new facilities, which in turn unlock more features of the game.

Finishing those requests often come down to gathering the necessary resources or items the townspeople ask for. Resources can be found laying around, but you can always gather more by playing a timed mini-game. The special items work as a motivator to send you to the many other locations in Ocean's End, since most of them are in the possession of a boss monster waiting at the end. Some requests are more direct, sending you somewhere to move the plot forward. You'll travel to these locations via a map that lists each spot as it opens up.

Screenshot by Siliconera

The dungeon designs are solid enough, with some little secrets to find that will reward you with treasures or stat increases. Enemies are visible on the map, so you can try to avoid encounters if you like. You'll also be able to see the boss, and their size usually makes it very clear that they are not a normal encounter. As you make your way through, you'll get the odd proper puzzle to deal with, often involving switches, plus the aforementioned build-a-shape mini-games. In those, you'll be given an outlined shape and a selection of pieces. You'll have to figure out how to place them to create the shape. You can also try as many times as you like, making these more of a way to spice things up during the dungeon runs than anything else. These puzzles also indirectly demonstrate one of the many accessibility features of the game.

You can, if you choose, play the game in a turn-based mode where the pieces don't fall during battle. Instead, you can take your time to place each piece, and the enemies will simply attack after a certain number of pieces have been placed. It's a nice feature for those who might not be so good at Tetris, a quality which would otherwise put you at a grave disadvantage in Flowstone Saga. Combined with the various difficulty options, you have a lot of say in how challenging or relaxing you would like the experience to be overall.

Flowstone Saga
Screenshot by Siliconera

One of the best things about Flowstone Saga is in how breezy it feels. The run time is tight, so it avoids overstaying its welcome. It's constantly introducing new systems or abilities, keeping things lively. While you probably don't need to engage with most of them to finish the game, they're welcome all the same. There was a real risk here that the line-clearing battle system could have gotten too repetitive over time, but it never gets much of a chance to do so thanks to all of this. Just when the dust settles in the early going, you unlock a job system. Then, you unlock additional elements. A bit later, you've unlocked battle helpers. It keeps adding new twists for quite a while into the adventure.

While Flowstone Saga is mechanically rich, perhaps even to an excess, its narrative left me wanting more. The dialog is competently written and the overarching plot is engaging if somewhat predictable, but the characters and their interactions often came off slightly artificial and banal. It's not terrible, but it was difficult to get invested in a lot of the conversations between characters as a result. The upfront excitement and mystery didn't pay off as well as I'd hoped for. By the end I was playing more for my enjoyment of the gameplay than to see where the story went.

Flowstone Saga
Screenshot by Siliconera

Flowstone Saga is a charming blend of RPG and puzzle game with a zippy pace and lots of mechanics to engage with. The presentation is great, with colorful, detailed visuals and a strong soundtrack. The story doesn't hit the same high notes as the rest of the game, but it does its job well enough to keep you engaged for the duration of this relatively brief yet enjoyable journey. In some ways, it feels like the game could have gone longer and explored some of its mechanics more thoroughly, but I give it credit for wrapping up before it got repetitive. If you're looking for a lighter bite between all of the gigantic RPGs releasing these days, this should fit the bill nicely.

Flowstone Saga is available for PCs.

Preview: Whimel Academy Is Clearly a Work in Progress

"Cozy" games and life sims seem to pair well together, giving people a chance to go through day-to-day experiences in a relaxed way, and it feels like Impossible Home's Whimel Academy is counting on that. It tasks players with going through six years of school life at the Whimel Magic Academy. However, the current state of it, while fine, also feels like perhaps there could be some higher stakes and more bug-catching to make the experience feel more solid.

Pulling from the idea of a Harry Potter-esque fantasy, all Whimel Academy players find themselves attending the school after being invited to train to become a witch or wizard. Like titles where scheduling is key, your goal is to build up stats in order to find a path for yourself outside of university. In addition, there are fellow students you can get to know, ideally eventually building something deeper with them.

Day-to-day life is simple. You select classes and activities. These increase your stats in the Physical, Emotional, Mental, and Magical categories. That, in turn, influences your interactions with other characters and the ways you can respond to them. You can also customize your room, interact with a cat, and collect and use items like books, food, and potions to help reach your goals. As there are no minigames and this is a straightforward stat-builder like Princess Maker, you basically select your actions and then find out results.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0mc3yvvNnM&ab_channel=ImpossibleHome

For some, that might feel a bit tedious. The real "excitement" here I feel comes from the interactions with others. There aren't milestone activities really yet in the same way as ones in Princess Maker or Tokimeki Memorial, where you're shooting for certain events, worrying about major tests and milestones, or stressing about time. In fact, the six-year deadline almost felt too effortless for me. It's lacking the sense of drive I felt in other life sims at this point, thought that could be due to it being in early access and more elements on the way that could assist more goal-driven players.

But really, my biggest concern now comes down to what could be either a mixture of bugs or unfinished content. It tried to send me through the tutorial by repeating that prompt a few times in the first year. I had a conversation with Theo repeat three times after I was four years into it. I couldn't tell if ensuing relationship events weren't ready, or it was a bug that kept it triggering. The ending I earned was incredibly short and didn't mention any other characters or details about my "life." Not to mention in general that the script definitely needs some work. I spotted some issues with the sentence structure and awkward dialogue.

But, again, given this is a game that just launched in early access and won't be out for a year, there's hope. These could be normal consequences of growing pains.

I get what Impossible Home is attempting to accomplish with Whimel Academy. Life simulations like Princess Maker or Tokimeki Memorial can get stressful when you start thinking about stats and deadlines. The current build almost makes things feel a little too low-pressure though, especially with bugs getting in the way to hamper the experience and result in endings not being what you might expect after your time passes. Given there's still about a year from its full release, I'm curious to see if there'll be more added to make school life feel a bit more compelling.

Whimel Academy is available in Early Access for PCs via Steam.

Cattle Country open beta lets you try the Wild West farming game for free

As good as its story is, my favorite moments of Red Dead Redemption 2 are the quiet ones. Spending time in camp, wandering the wilds of the Old West, hunting for food, taking care of my horse, or running a moonshine shack in the online mode. Cattle Country, then, is a game that holds a lot of appeal to me. It takes the tried and tested farming sim formula popularized by Stardew Valley and transports it to a world of cowboys and bandits, even sprinkling in a little Terraria-style mining for good measure. Interested? You can try it now for free, thanks to a new open beta on Steam.

Delta Force dev addresses its use of bots, and how they'll impact launch

Delta Force is already doing extremely well. The tactical FPS had the biggest demo at the latest Steam Next Fest, and players are already gearing up for the impending global open beta in December. With modes reminiscent of Battlefield and Escape From Tarkov, and a remake of the Black Hawk Down campaign, it certainly looks like Delta Force will have a bit of everything. Since tests started running earlier this year, though, players have been divided on bots. While the future of the computer-controlled opponents remains uncertain, developer Team Jade says it's been having "intense discussions" on the topic internally.

Lycoris Recoil Manga Captures the Series' Nuances

Lycoris Recoil and its concept concerning teenage girls acting as assassins isn't exactly new in manga and anime, as we've seen the idea brought up in series like Gunslinger Girl and Tista. While perhaps not as immediately, dark, dramatic, or heartbreaking as its contemporaries, it comes across as something special due to the blend of drama, humor, and insight into people's abilities and motives. While we've already had plenty of opportunities to see as much from the anime adaptation, Yen Press picking up the manga allows us a way to appreciate even more of its nuances.

Editor's note: There will be some mild spoilers for the first volume of Lycoris Recoil manga below.

In the case of Lycoris Recoil, we're introduced to some Direct Attack Lycoris agents in the midst of an incredibly dangerous situation. A group of them are in a stand-off with a criminal organization that captured one of the members. We see a lone Lycoris called in to assist and defuse. Before that can happen, communications are cut and Takina Inoue uses her gun to kill all of the enemy agents. Erika is saved, but the group is dead, her fellow agents are mad at her, and she finds herself being assigned to work alongside another lone agent named Chisato Nishikigi at the LycoReco cafe.

The first part of what makes Lycoris Recoil work so well, immediately from the outset, is the contrasting personalities. Both Chisato and Takina, as members of the Lycoris division, are orphans trained as agents and assassins. Their age is designed to hide the fact that they're capable individuals able to handle and defuse the most drastic and dangerous situations. Takina is incredibly serious about her job, but we quickly see that she acted to protect her ally and friend even if it broke rules. Chisato is referred to as a prodigy and someone Takina should learn from, but she seems more like an ordinary, extremely congenial and bubbly young woman. Her outreach involves not only working at the cafe — their cover — but also doing work to assist in the community in addition to the government-ordered missions.

But the biggest contrast is their methods. Chisato believes that all lives matter. Even those of the threats she addresses. So once Takina, and by extension the reader, sees her in action for the first time, her rumored status becomes far more believable. Even in the initial volume, we get opportunities to see how here mind is working and there's more to her. In so doing, we even get an idea that Takina might start to be intrigued by her and her methods.

Because this is a manga adaptation of Lycoris Recoil, we can better appreciate the subtleties of these sorts of moments. When we first see Chisato properly in action in her first mission with Takina, the art captures her incredible dodging methods. We can more clearly see the things they do in the photo that drew the attention of a criminal group. It makes it easier for us to notice and catch what these agents do. In fact, I think it also helped make it clearer to see what sort of person Yoshimatsu was upon his first appearance.

It's just great to see Spider Lily's story told in another format. Retellings of stories give us chances to perhaps focus on and appreciate things we might have missed before. The manga adaptation of Lycoris Recoil seems like it could be an opportunity to better appreciate the characterizations, as well as understanding what these agents pick up on and how talented they are.

The first volume of the Lycoris Recoil manga will be available in English via Yen Press on October 29, 2024, and the second volume will debut on February 18, 2025. The anime is streaming on Crunchyroll. Yen Press will release the Lycoris Recoil: Ordinary Days light novel on January 21, 2025.

Final Fantasy Lost Stranger Manga Deserves More Attention

Back when I read the Final Fantasy XIV Eorzea Academy manga, I was enchanted by its story and direction. I wished there'd been more of it, rather than the sole volume that exists. It was only after reading it that I discovered I'd been missing out on Final Fantasy Lost Stranger all along. Yet another series tied to the Square Enix series in a more general way and released in English by Yen Press, it is interesting in that it calls back to familiar sorts of hallmarks and elements of entries FFXIV, while also offering its own take on isekai manga stories. And, since it has been running since 2017, there are 10 volumes to catch up on.

Editor's Note: There will be some spoilers for early volumes in the Final Fantasy Lost Stranger manga series below.

Like many isekai stories, the Final Fantasy Lost Stranger manga begins with a destined encounter with truck-kun. Shogo Sasaki and his sister Yuko both work at Square Enix. Instead of painting it as some ideal job, it's far more realistic! Hazuki Minase acknowledges that even if you get what seems like a "dream" job, it might not be exactly what you expect. Plus, work is work. So Shogo hoped to work on Final Fantasy, as did Yuko, but things didn't work out as planned. However, after an instance with the aforementioned truck, both siblings wake up in what is basically a fantasy world based on all Final Fantasy games.

Right away, this isekai manga feels like someone might expect from FFXI or FFXIV. Though the series is infused with references to mascot characters, spells, and mechanics from the games, Final Fantasy Lost Stranger kicks off with Shogo and Yuko joining a guild and trying to find jobs. This… gets Yuko killed. Which means that while it is based on Final Fantasy, it isn't exact. Because there's no "Raise" spell or means of reviving his fallen sister.

This kicks off the rest of the adventure, as Shogo is determined to find Raise to restore her. As a result, we get to see how well elements of Final Fantasy translate when implemented in an isekai manga. Shogo and Yuko's first allies are a black mage, white mage, and warrior. After Yuko is killed, they take part in a raid to defeat the dragon that killed her. Raise might not be present, but Toad certainly is. The existence of that spell and status effect ends up being a part of a whole plotline. Familiar locations, like the Gold Saucer, show up as well.

This even extends to familiar characters. Or, as is common in Final Fantasy, variants or folks who happen to share their names. There's a Cid here, and he eventually ends up becoming one of Shogo's allies. The Magus Sisters appear, and we meet a Princess Sara too. So in addition to the familiar archetypes, we're seeing these other recurring staples to make us feel at home and see how they'll behave this time. Especially when compared to the ones we remember.

Sometimes, I feel like the number of isekai manga series out there can get overwhelming, but the influx of Final Fantasy elements made it really easy to absolutely devour Final Fantasy Lost Stranger once I started reading the manga. I really appreciate the story and the way it incorporates elements and themes from multiple installments. Seeing nods to familiar character concepts and gameplay elements really kept me involved. Not to mention that, given Shogo's age and situation, he felt like a very identifiable protagonist. It all comes together very well.

Volumes 1-10 of the Final Fantasy Lost Stranger manga are available now, and Yen Press will release volume 11 on December 10, 2024.

Valve reverses Team Fortress 2's 'biggest' change in 17 years after just one day

Valve has just reversed a Team Fortress 2 tweak that came 17 years after launch. I'm not talking about weapon balancing, map changes, or even team adjustments. No, I'm talking about the Scout's pants. While Deadlock keeps getting major updates and Counter-Strike 2 continues weapon tweaks, the TF2 crowd was given a small, but impactful, update only to have it ripped away within 24 hours.

Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred patch buffs Legion events and fixes frustrations

The next Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred patch notes are here, and they're pretty lengthy. The ARPG's latest update is mostly focused on fixes, with some of the bigger frustrations tackled alongside some welcome changes for recurring irritations such as the constant flood of Gem Fragments. Alongside those come improvements to Legion events and the Kurast Undercity, as Blizzard prepares the table ahead of its midseason patch for Diablo 4 Season 6. There's a lot to dig through, so here are the most important changes.

New Deadlock update stops you matchmaking against its most unbalanced teams

Valve has just rolled out one of the most important Deadlock fixes yet. Since the Half-Life, Portal, and TF2 maker's MOBA went public, games have been anything but balanced. Players of an incredibly high skill level were constantly being paired with people playing for the first time, creating uneven matches for everyone. Because of this, the key complaint I've been reading for months is that games are either far too easy or way too hard. Now though, one simple matchmaking change should isolate Deadlock's bad matchups.

honkai star rail robin earbuds

HoYoVerse posted on its official Weibo channel that it will release a pair of earbuds that draw inspiration from Robin from Honkai: Star Rail. This is a collaboration product with Moondrop, a Chinese company that specializes in producing audio equipment that can double as pieces of art.

The Honkai: Star Rail Robin earbuds from Moondrop are white, blue, and gold. There is a star-like design on the right earbud, and a starry treble clef on the left one. You can charge them via USB-C, and they can last about 9 hours per charge. They'll come with a charging box that has Robin on the lid, as well as a leather carrying case that has her name on the cover. Aside from acting as earbuds, they can double as microphones. The earbuds cost $99.

Robin's Chinese voice actress also recorded some voice lines that'll play depending on what you do with the product. For example, when you power on the earbuds, she'll say, "I'm pleased to meet you. My name is Robin." When you power them off, she'll say, "Until next time. Sweet dreams!" There are multiple voice lines and Moondrop welcomes customers to try and discover them all.

In Honkai: Star Rail, Robin is a 5-star Physical Harmony character who was a major character in the Penacony storyline. She is a popular and famous singer in the galaxy, and is the younger sister of Sunday, who was the head of the Oak Family. As a limited 5-star, you can only pull for her when the "Just Intonation" banner is active in the game.

Honkai: Star Rail is readily available on the PS5, Windows PC, and mobile devices. The earbuds will come out soon, as HoYoVerse will have a giveaway on November 1, 2024 for Chinese citizens in which 10 fans will receive the earbuds for free.

nendoroid good smile company packaging

Good Smile Company announced that it will change the packaging for its Nendoroid and Nendoroid [Basic} products. The new box design will reduce plastic consumption by up to 84%, but you will no longer be able to look at the product before purchasing or display the item while it's still inside the box.

The new box design for Nendoroids is a smaller and rather non-descript. As mentioned earlier, the window at the front and the transparent plastic casing to hold the Nendoroid and all of the pieces in place no longer exist. The box also doesn't have any pictures of the various poses and optional parts that come with the Nendoroid. When you open the box, all of the items will still be inside using cardboard boxes that you can recycle. According to Good Smile Company, this is part of its efforts to reduce the number of plastic waste.

It will slowly phase out its old packaging, which means that some new items may still look like the old box. It also won't answer any questions people may ask in regards to what packaging their Nendoroid will come in. Nendoroids that come out after the Kano Yamanouchi [Basic], Kurisu Makise 2.0, Taiga Aisaka 2.0, and Yoko 2.0 models will use the new packaging from Good Smile Company.

To say fans are livid would be an understatement. Many on X (formerly Twitter) have pointed out that not being able to see the product is a major problem. People won't be able to see if there are any damages to the product, or if they even received a legitimate Nendoroid from Good Smile Company with this type of packaging. Others pointed out that for collectors, the lack of windows would be disastrous. Some collectors showcase their items without ever actually opening the box, so the lack of a plastic window negates the purpose for purchasing. There are a few replies that appreciate Good Smile Company's attempt at reducing waste though.

Good Smile Company will start releasing its Nendoroids inside white boxes without the see-through window. Time will tell if the company listens to customer feedback and keeps the original packaging for its Nendoroids.

final fantasy magic the gathering header

Wizards of the Coast has given a sneak peek at the new Magic: The Gathering cards for 2025, including the Final Fantasy cards that'll be part of the Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond set. The set will come out on June 13, 2025.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0CgU7bOgNU

People who were at MagicCon: Las Vegas got to see the six of the new cards, which will also be available digitally when they come out. According to Wizards of the Coast, this Magic: The Gathering set will be the largest collection of Final Fantasy artwork in a single game. You'll be able to get cards of characters and scenes from all of the Final Fantasy games, from the first one to XVI. This will only be the main games, so spin-offs like Theatrhythm will likely not see any representation.

Zakeel Gordon, the Product Architect at WIzards of the Coast, said: "This collaboration is more than just cards. It's about celebrating decades of iconic characters, legendary stories, and unforgettable moments from one of the most beloved franchises in gaming history. Final Fantasy fans will get to experience these characters in an entirely new way—through the strategic depth and storytelling of Magic: The Gathering."

You can check out six of the Final Fantasy cards here:

Magic: The Gathering is the first trading card game and came out in 1993. As of February 2023, over fifty million people play the game and Wizards of the Coast printed over twenty billion cards between 2008 and 2016. While cards for the game generally adhere to the lore that's within the game, Wizards of the Coast began adding collaboration cards as part of its Universes Beyond initiative. In 2022, the company already announced the Final Fantasy collaboration, along with the Assassin's Creed cards (which came out in July 2024). Other intellectual properties that have appeared in Magic include Hatsune Miku, Jurassic Park, and The Lord of the Rings.

The Final Fantasy set will appear in Magic: The Gathering on June 13, 2025.

wuthering waves jiyan re-run

Jiyan is having his first re-run in Wuthering Waves and his banner will last until November 13, 2024. The 4-stars on rate-up alongside him are Youhu, Sanhua, and Mortefi.

Jiyan was the first 5-star character available in Wuthering Waves after the game launched in late May 2024. He is a 5-star Aero Resonator who wields Broadblades in battle, and would fill the DPS niche in your party. As a character, Jiyan is the general of the Midnight Rangers and was once a medic before he became a soldier for Jinzhou. His weapon, Verdant Summit, is also available for a limited time.

Here is a Midnight Podcast episode for Jiyan, in which you can get a better idea of his personality for those who haven't completed the Jinzhou storyline:

https://twitter.com/Wuthering_Waves/status/1849088388877463720

Youhu is a new character and she's a Glacio Mutant Resonator. She's permanently available in the standard banner as of Version 1.4, and you can also get her in the Afterglow Coral Store for 80 Afterglow Corals. You can only purchase her once and if you already got Youhu from the Jiyan re-run banner in Wuthering Waves, then you'll simply receive Youhu's Waveband. After Version 1.4, she will no longer be in the store, so if you want her but don't want to risk pulling, then you can use Afterglow Corals to guarantee her addition to your roster.

Wuthering Waves is available on PS5, Windows PC, and mobile devices.

star rail acheron apparel mihoyo

The miHoYo flagship store on TMall will release apparel that draw inspiration from Acheron of Honkai: Star Rail. There will also be a set of keycaps available, using her color scheme and image.

The items draw from Acheron's silhouette, such as how the skirt looks short from the front but long in the back. Accessories also have a sharp contrast between silver and red, much like how Acheron looks when she uses her Ultimate in the game. Items available as part of this collection include:

  • Bracelet
  • Choker
  • Half-skirt
  • Handbag
  • Jacket
  • Keycaps
  • Long-sleeved T-shirt
  • Umbrella

All of the items are available for pre-order on October 31, 2024. When they arrive will depend on what you get. For example, the bags should reach your house some time in mid-December 2024. Meanwhile, the bracelet will be there in early December 2024.

Most of the users don't seem too happy with the designs. The top comments on the official Weibo announcement are "I'm going to pass out; these clothes are too ugly" and "I can't believe you had the nerve to upload these designs." Others pointed out the lack of any of Acheron's symbols, such as the red flowers that appear in her splash art and Ultimate, in the outfits. While the flowers do appear on the accessories, they're not on the clothes themselves. The lack of enthusiasm in the designs is similar to when HoYoVerse unveiled the Zhongli-inspired apparel for Genshin Impact.

Some players really like to have romance in their games. So, does Ys X: Nordics feature love interests or any romance?

Ys X: Nordics might initially seem like it could feature a love story. Especially with its focus on two similarly aged, playable characters—Adol and Karja. This setup might lead some to expect a romantic narrative. However, the game takes a different approach, building a bond between Adol and Karja that feels more familial than romantic.

Rather than romantic tension, the story focuses on their deep connection built on shared experiences and mutual respect. It explores their dynamic as they grow closer, highlighting their importance to each other without introducing many romantic overtones.

The story of Ys X is crafted around this relationship, emphasizing how Adol and Karja learn to rely on one another. Their partnership is central to the game's plot and adds depth to their individual journeys. The sincerity of the bond's writing makes it feel genuine. It's a unique narrative focus that differs from many romance-centered pairings seen in many JRPGs.

Screenshot by Siliconera

Does Ys: X Nordics have a romance mechanic?

As players progress, they'll also meet a variety of other characters who lend their support to Adol and Karja's journey. Interacting with these characters can unlock additional details about their backstories, filling out their profiles. However, there is no relationship-building mechanic similar to those found in other games. These interactions remain limited to story and lore rather than gameplay mechanics.

In the end, Ys X: Nordics explores a strong, non-romantic relationship that feels central to the game's narrative. This choice makes the game feel fresh and heartfelt, allowing the connection between Adol and Karja to stand out without relying on a love story. However, those looking for a romantic angle might still be pleasantly surprised by the direction the games takes.

Ys X: Nordics will release on the Switch, Playstation 4 and 5, and PC on October 25, 2024.

The Dragon Age series focuses on three core RPG classes for players to choose from: Mage, Rogue, and Warrior. They all have their own strengths and weaknesses players will likely gravitate towards. Within each of the three core classes across the mainline games thus far, these are the best Dragon Age classes and specializations worth using.

Image via EA

Best Dragon Age Mage Classes and Specializations

The Mage class is all about magic and the different specializations within it focus on different areas of magic. My favorite of the Mage specializations is the horrifying but impressively unique Blood Mage. This forbidden magic is powerful and uses HP instead of mana to power it.

In addition to it, Spirit Healer with its immense healing spells is invaluable in some of the hardest challenges of the series. Finally, coming from Dragon Age: Inquisition, my second-favorite specialization for Mage is Necromancer. It acts exactly as you might expect, allowing the player to raise the dead, terrify enemies, and use incredible DPS and crowd control possibilities.

Image via EA

Best Dragon Age Rogue Classes and Specializations

Assassin is the quintessential Rogue specialization. It is the only one available in every RPG in the series thus far, and for a good reason. It is basically the evolved form of the Rogue, specializing dual daggers and able to deal some of the best damage of the classes. But it is pretty tame unlike its fellow best Rogue specializations.

Bard is a specialization that very much needs to come back. It acts as a support for the party, buffing them and being quite fun to use because of this. Then there is, finally, the Ranger. This very Dungeons & Dragons-feeling class lets the player attack from afar and also command the wildlife to fight for them in a great way.

Best Dragon Age classes and specializations Cullen
Image via EA

Best Dragon Age Warrior Specializations

The Warrior class is the basic close combat and often tank-like archetype. Oddly enough, it feels like this class has experimented the least of the three, as it often features the same old specializations. That said, if you want the most straightforward idea of the Warrior, you'll want the Champion. This is like the tank in a way, able to command the entire battlefield by inspiring allies, defending them, and even terrifying foes.

My personal favorite of the Warrior specializations is the Reaver. This bloodthirsty class uniquely uses fallen enemies to feed their thirst for battle and go into a bloody frenzy. The sheer power of the Reaver is unmatched. Finally, the other best specialization for Warrior is the Templar. Like the Blood Mage, Templar has some of the best lore for a class in Dragon Age. This servant of the Chantry is built to take out Mages and other magical beings, and has some of the best skills for the Warrior class.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard will release for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on October 31, 2024.
