Greedfall 2 dev says changes will be gradual, and it won't rush a release date

After early access success stories such as Baldur's Gate 3, it's increasingly clear that the open development process it offers can be a great way to make some truly special games. While Greedfall 2 aims to follow in those footsteps, however, its initial impressions have left a somewhat sour taste in the mouth. As developer Spiders looks to build on a launch that has been met by a 'mixed' user reception on Steam, it says that it was prepared for some parts of the game to miss the mark at release.

The Forza Horizon 4 delisting is just hours away, so act fast if you want it

If you've been meaning to pick it up ahead of the imminent Forza Horizon 4 delisting, I hope this reaches you in time. Xbox and Playground Games are about to remove it from digital storefronts forever, meaning you'll have to buy secondhand physical copies if you suddenly decide you want to try it out down the line. If you want to take it for a drive, then, you can at least pick up multiple editions of the game at 80% off right now. I wouldn't wait around, though.

After a tough launch for gorgeous fantasy survival game Nightingale, developer Inflexion Games seems to have really righted the ship. As the year nears its close, Infexion CEO Aaryn Flynn and art director Neil Thompson reveal a final update for 2024, and there are a couple of very welcome improvements on the cards.

New Fallout 4 mod makes stealth much better with new takedown animations

What I love most about Bethesda's suite of RPGs is how they help you choose a playstyle that works best. I swing a two-handed greatsword in Skyrim and focus on sniping in Fallout, with perks and items always helping builds reflect these goals. I also love investing points and skills into sneaking, but always felt like something was missing. That's where today's new mod comes in, as it adds some extra animations to Fallout 4 to give those sneaky takedowns the extra punch they need.

Review: Steam Prison: Beyond the Steam Is Different Than the Original Otome

Fan disks for otome games are tricky things. The audience is both more limited and more picky. There are expectations that you'll perhaps learn more things about characters you already love. You hope for opportunities to romance ones who didn't get routes in the original. Basically, it's building on a foundation. Which, in turn, limits who may be interested in the title. Steam Prison: Beyond the Steam is a really well-done follow up in some ways, with a fascinating story, but I also can't help but feel that it isn't good at delivering when building on existing romances or finally romancing Sachsen.

To begin with, Steam Prison: Beyond the Steam isn't like fan disks for otome games like Virche Evermore -EpiC: Lycoris- or Radiant Tale: Fanfare. In both of those examples, you get additional epilogue stories set after the best endings of different character routes. There are also extra love interests, which in Radiant Tale: Fanfare's case involved two pretty meaty stories for supporting cast members. With this Steam Prison follow-up, you basically get two paths, and there aren't really individual, lengthy storylines for any love interest.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUYpeTsous0&ab_channel=MangaGamer

Cainabel Story builds off of the Grand Ending from the first game. If you're coming to Steam Prison: Beyond the Steam without having the original otome game, then good news! There's an option to go through a summary to find out what happened. Which I did, because I never actually went for that ending in the first game. I went for Adage and Eltcreed, then decided I was done. Because of that decision, our heroine Cyrus didn't form the ties you'd expect with the love interests from the original game. (You can change her name, of course.) Since the events of the Grand Ending mean many of the issues present in society previously are absent, there's no divide between people from the Heights like her or ones in the Depths. The new legislature also means people are working together and aren't limited to who they can or can't associate with. But since we didn't get to meet (and romance) people then, we now get new chances to build relationships with characters like Adage, Eltcreed, Fin, Ulrik, Yune, Jevite, and Jereme.

It's a very well written and executed story! We're getting to see people interact in different ways, which I appreciated. There's also a focus on the investigation around Cainabel, the new area discovered after going through the Depths. I still enjoy Cyrus as a heroine, and the bachelors are interesting candidates for love. The art is also still quite fantastic, and I love the design direction for characters and how this really feels like a steampunk type of period piece.

The downside is, Steam Prison: Beyond the Steam doesn't feel as much like an otome game as the original. This isn't completely unexpected. I had an idea this would happen going in, as Steam Prison was more about the story about the divide between the Heights and Depths, dealing with government and authority figures I don't agree with, and getting to see different sides of the world's society depending on who you had Cyrus pursue. In this fan disk, this is basically a single storyline with events for the love interest you like occasionally coming up at certain points. Said moments might not feel completely romantic. So it's an expected sort of progression and approach, but I will admit being a bit disappointed that there wasn't the same weight and variety with separate routes and branching storylines based on who you choose to love.

The other main draw for Steam Prison: Beyond the Steam is the new Sachsen route in A New Theory. I loved Sachsen in the original otome game. I wanted to date him. Unlike the other mode, this one follows the story from the first entry, but adjusts it so Sachsen is an option after Cyrus finds herself living in the depths. In some ways, it is exactly what I wanted! I appreciated the art and the characterization still remains great. However, it is shorter than those routes for love interests in that installment, while also feeling a bit rushed. The pacing is off, which affected my enjoyment of it and made me feel like I wasn't getting to know him as well as I did other characters like Eltcreed.

Oh, there's also Petit Prison. It's a minigame with the characters. You basically look at scenes and need to find what is different. It is fine, but I didn't feel an urge to play it more than once.

The thing about Steam Prison: Beyond the Steam is that going into it, you probably know this otome fan disk is going to be a lot like the original game. That means the romance won't be a major focus, and a narrative getting into world building and perhaps making a difference in some ways will. The characterizations are on point, and it is fun to see familiar faces again. I just wish there had been more romance to it, with more fleshed out routes for characters, especially Sachsen since this is his moment.

FF14 dev asks Riot to help bring League of Legends to the MMO

What's your dream Final Fantasy 14 crossover? I'm hopeful that some sort of FF7 event is on the way, but there are myriad IPs for Square Enix to collaborate with outside of its own series as well. The MMO has been around for over a decade at this point, and I firmly believe that big crossover events can only be good for the game's longevity over the next ten years. Whatever your picks, though, there's one lead developer at Square Enix who wants nothing more than for FF14 to crossover with League of Legends. So if that's something you want too, now's the time to make your voice heard.

Diablo 2's holiday event is underway, and it's off to a very generous start

With Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred, Path of Exile 2 early access, and Last Epoch 1.0 all making big splashes this year, there really hasn't been much cause to go back to the game that truly set the standard for ARPGs. Diablo 2 Resurrected is the definitive way to play the 2000 Blizzard RPG that, to this day, remains the biggest inspiration for the entire genre. There's a new season on the go, but very little in the way of reasons to check-in. If you've been craving some old-school blasting, however, it's well worth coming back for the 22 Nights of Terror, which are now underway and already off to a rather generous start.

You can grab the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth PC port at a big discount before launch

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth took me entirely by surprise earlier this year. I enjoyed the first entry in Square Enix's FF7 trilogy, Remake, a fair bit when it came out, but I wasn't exactly foaming at the mouth to play what came next. Then Rebirth was released, and I've not been able to stop thinking about the world or characters since. That's why I've been eagerly waiting for Square Enix to finally port Rebirth to PC, and on top of not having to wait for much longer, we can also get it at a steep discount ahead of time.

What is the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth PC release date? We all knew it was going to be a difficult task for Square Enix to remake Final Fantasy 7, and now we're just over halfway there, as Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth marks the second entry in the trilogy.

While the series is known for its PlayStation roots, the first entry in the RPG trilogy did make its way onto PC shortly after launch. If you haven't played Final Fantasy 7, the devs have made some key changes to the story to make things exciting for returning players. Here's what you need to know about the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth release date, story, gameplay, and more.

     Hardcore FPS Ready or Not's

Plenty of huge co-op games have come and gone these past couple of years, and while the likes of Helldivers 2 have dominated the headlines, Ready or Not is up there as one of the most successful newcomers. It's now celebrating the first anniversary of its 1.0 launch on December 17, and it's established a healthy player base and a community keen to unravel the secrets of Los Sueños' criminal underworld. However, the realistic SWAT shooter has also faced criticism for its depiction of horrifying combat and hostage scenarios and previous inclusion of now-removed alt-right references. I spoke to lead designer Sean Gorman and art director Mark Ranson about the highs and lows of Ready or Not and what the future may hold for the hardcore FPS.

The Small-Animallike Lady Is Adored by the Ice Prince Is a Funny Manga

There are so many shojo manga series where the premise is "this woman is forced to marry this man." It gets to be a lot, especially in cases where it is played straight and super dramatic. It almost feels like Mugi Sawai and Hisui are aware of this with The Small-Animallike Lady is Adored by the Ice Prince, as its a manga that takes that approach, but also decides to be as funny and cute as possible about the whole situation.

Editor's Note: There will be spoilers for the first volume of The Small-Animallike Lady is Adored by the Ice Prince shojo manga in the article below.

The Small-Animallike Lady is Adored by the Ice Prince begins with Liliana, daughter of the earl Oliver Villiers, being selected by the titular Prince William as his fiance at a party. It then flashes back to before the event. Liliana's parents state she needs to attend, because the royal family demanded all suitable, young women of a certain age show up to a ball for the prince to pick a wife.

This leads to a number of immediate twists on this genre of shojo manga. Liliana's not crazy about the idea! She wants a relationship like her parents have! But it turns out, they don't like the idea either! Her father doesn't want to lose his little girl. So they agree they'll dress her in a drab and unfashionable way so she'll be overlooked. Her brothers Aidan and Ian adore and dote on her, to the point that Ian purposely makes himself look terrifying and intimidating to scare possible suitors away from her. So they're against it too. It's all very good as we see the family fawn over this charming, adorable, headstrong girl.

The setup in the manga continues to remain good and funny, because Liliana isn't just perfect. She's an endearing heroine, for sure. However, she also has faults. She's headstrong. Her stomach is a bottomless pit for good food. To the point that when she heads to the party, her concern is to fill up on as much of the assuredly exceptional, royal cuisine. She's unobservant, because she sat next to vase that highlighted her when she was pigging out on the palace food. Her reactions can be a bit exaggerated, which makes her a delight to watch.

But this shojo manga gets even more funny once we get to the point at which Liliana can interact with William and his family in The Small-Animallike Lady is Adored by the Ice Prince. The king and queen are genuinely nice people! Or they seem to be. The serious, stubborn, and quiet William is actually kind-hearted and caring, and seeing his means of interacting alongside the more expressive Liliana in their first proper meeting is so cute and silly. It's just such a good read, and the events throughout the course of the volume suggest it will continue to be that way.

The result is that The Small-Animallike Lady is Adored by the Ice Prince comes across as a manga that could be about a healthy, happy, relationship between a young woman and her royal fiance. Like maybe Liliana will get a wish and have a marriage like her parents! It's encouraging and makes the prospect of continuing to read this shojo manga more appealing.

Volume 1 of The Small-Animallike Lady is Adored by the Ice Prince is available now, and Yen Press will release volume 2 of the manga on March 25, 2024.
