Cramped around a table in a darkened room, unsure if that one friend in your group has mastered the roleplaying side of TTRPGs, or if their house is always this creepy. I've had a bit of a love-hate relationship with Teamfight Tactics in recent sets. As time's gone on, it feels like the game has progressively pandered to the casual, eschewing flexibility in favor of more rigid compositions. I don't have too much of an issue with this, provided the game experience remains fun and engaging. But Set 14, Cyber City, fell well short of the bar, leaving me burnt out and fed up. Fortunately, Set 15, K.O. Coliseum, is already soothing my mental wounds and reminding me just how good TFT can be.

I Hope The Girl Who Wants to Be a Hero and the Girl Who Ought to Be a Hero Becomes an Anime

While typically it is manga series that end up turned into anime series, light novels can spawn those types of adaptations too, and I hope Inori's The Girl Who Wants to Be a Hero and the Girl Who Ought to Be a Hero. This yuri romance and fantasy story from Yen Press is not only incredibly cute, but highlights the different perspectives between two prospective heroes. As a result, we get to see how well they balance each other out both as love interests and actual partners in the field. Plus, it's also really fun to see a young demon girl make a name for herself and show how great she'd be at being a hero.

Editor's Note: There will be some light spoilers for The Girl Who Wants to Be a Hero and the Girl Who Ought to Be a Hero below.

The Girl Who Wants to Be a Hero and the Girl Who Ought to Be a Hero is the tale of two students at The Hero Institute. Leonie Baez is a young human woman who is the daughter of the legendary Almighty Hero. Her mother beat the Demon Lord, ending the Great Human-Demon War in the process and bringing peace to the two species. Ruchika is a young demon woman. She's heard about humans, the Almighty Hero, and the school. She decided that she wanted to become a savior too, and raced to attend. However when the two meet, it is love at first sight and Ruchika proposes to Leonie. However, Leonie is really quite unfamiliar with any kinds of relationships, romantic or platonic, aside from her friend Nor due to her upbringing and notoriety.

Okay, so the first reason I think The Girl Who Wants to Be a Hero and the Girl Who Ought to Be a Hero would make a great anime is because there's a fantastic structure in place for the light novel that would be interesting to see showcased in an animated adaptation. Inori goes back and forth between Ruchika and Leonie's perspective for things. I'd love to see that represented in a show. Perhaps have Ruchika's perspective be the main focal point, but some episodes from Leonie's perspective.

Another reason it might work well is due to the story and its execution. It's an underdog tale at its heart, but for two reasons. "The girl who wants to be a hero" referenced in the title is Ruchika. Even though she is a demon, a race a lot of people are still prejudiced against as the story begins despite it being years after the Great Human-Demon War and the two species being a peace, she's basically an ideal hero. She's got strong moral beliefs. She's strong. She's intelligent. She's also fiercely loyal. But because of her background, she isn't being recognized both by her classmates and teachers. At the same time, "the girl who ought to be a hero" Leonie is an underdog in her own way. We see how people just seem to use her for background and possible potential, and don't care about her for who she is. (Only Ruchika and Nor value the real Leonie!) But also because of that background, she's only "perfect" in-classroom. In practice, she has issues. We end up rooting for both characters in different ways.

The dynamic between Ruchika and Leonie would also make for a fun anime adaptation of The Girl Who Wants to Be a Hero and the Girl Who Ought to Be a Hero. Ruchika isn't shy. She knows what (and who) she wants. There's a fantastic energy around her. Leonie is more subdued and uncertain, but does possess her own strengths. Her stability and practicality are two of them. They balance each other out well, even though the "assignments" suggest they might not be a perfect pair. Even though Ruchika is sure about their relationship, Leonie isn't, and seeing the bond really build up throughout the story and leading into the end and epilogue is great. I think it'd be fantastic to watch their love story and relationship on screen, given the situations and final test that come up.

The story The Girl Who Wants to Be a Hero and the Girl Who Ought to Be a Hero tells is so fun, relatable, and heartwarming that it should be an anime so more people could enjoy it. Both of the lead characters are compelling in their own way. Their dynamic is also fantastic. Plus, the way Inori tells the light novel and showcases perspectives is interesting, and I feel like it'd be great to see that in-action on-screen.

A bookshelf displaying The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle

It is often said that we stand on the shoulders of giants, but there's a point where we reach treacherous heights where oxygen is sparse. So, what does it take these days for a new writer to break through the noise in genre fiction? Just how big do you have to go with your concept?

Well, how about The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, a self-described "Agatha Christie meets Groundhog Day" sci-fi/crime/body-swapping romp by travel writer Stuart Turton, a man filled with so many ideas he's clearly bursting at the seams? It seems about the right height—and it certainly kickstarted his literary career in 2018.

In some ways, I already said too much about the many mysteries that slowly unfold in this tale, including these desperate attempts at genre designations. Let's just say that your typical interwar castle party setting from typical Golden Age detective fiction is spiced up by the notion that our protagonist wakes up in someone else's body each day, with an intricate sci-fi framing to explain what (and why) is going on.

Amusingly enough, the US edition of the book tacked on another half homicide, titling it The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, supposedly because of similarities to The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Who's counting at this point, really?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9-hCXXJ2X0

Beyond the sheer volume of ideas, the fun and tactility of the prose also make this an extremely enjoyable read. Just a couple of examples: "There's a wariness to him now, the sense of a man unpacking a trunk filled with sharp objects," or someone "offering me a level glance best described as a belligerent apology," and, the thoughts of an old noble being dragged out of his bath by his valet, "I pay for his assistance in shame."

As we jump across hosts old and new, each with different levels of belligerence towards our invading protagonist, expressing the different ways they understand and topologize the world around them makes for a great time throughout, and it invoked the feeling of manipulating NPCs in a particularly tough puzzle game.

I suppose it's true for every profession that understanding how the sausage is made takes a lot out of the childlike joy that got you into the thing in the first place. As a fellow author of sorts, it's all too often the machinery of the narrative structure that grabs my attention these days when I read something. So it's the highest praise I can give to The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle that I eventually just leaned back and said, "I have no idea what is going on, but I feel like I'm in good hands," letting the rest of the story roll over me with its thunderous momentum.

And while I loved the journey to the resolution and the way our understanding blossomed of this intricate little diorama along the way, I felt somewhat indifferent to the actual solution to the actual crime. It felt a bit too incidental, a bit too much like those Golden Age crime stories where the things that truly mattered happened a long time ago and far away, with most of the present action serving as little more than a horde of red herrings.

But not even this could take away from my enjoyment of the book, because the resolution of the character dynamics that kicked off the sci-fi framing of the story was wonderful, and I found that a much more meaningful way to conclude the novel in the end.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsmdorkoISo

A criticism I came across—and one I must say I never considered—is that Aiden Bishop, our protagonist, only inhabits male hosts during his time in Blackheath House. With the deeply personalized inner monologues and the incredible tactility of the prose, I certainly didn't feel as if we were consigned to a narrow perspective. But if this is a dealbreaker to you, might I point you to Turton's follow-up books, The Devil and the Dark Water and The Last Murder at the End of the World, if you absolutely need your strong female characters to be in a point-of-view perspective?

Turton has made it clear that he isn't interested in direct sequels and would rather explore new ideas with each new project. I'm happy to report that those two books also offer the same incredible prose and the sheer overload of ideas—though I must say I found his second outing much stronger than the third, even if some of its key points were a little more predictable. All his books are breakneck joyrides with hundreds of little lightbulb moments along the way, and I can't wait for the fourth roller coaster ride.

The post This sci-fi book is one of the smartest and most fun I've ever read, and we need more people talking about it appeared first on Destructoid.

Wuchang facing a monster emerging from the dark.

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers has been running into a bit of a disgruntled audience in the West and East alike. Bosses were made unkillable in Patch 1.5, with numerous areas fundamentally changed to reportedly appease the Chinese audience, leading Western players to review bomb the game.

Patch 1.5 made numerous bosses unkillable, rather than leaving them "exhausted," and fundamentally reshaped how they are portrayed in the game. Specifically, this is tied to historical characters, such as generals and figures from Chinese history, which the game's domestic audience seemingly wanted to be portrayed with more respect (thanks, RPS).

Additionally, Ming dynasty characters from one part of the game, who were previously hostile and crucial to the area's gameplay dynamics, are now entirely friendly, also to seemingly appease Chinese players.

This structurally changed a lot of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, its bosses and levels, leading players in the West to get up in arms against what they labeled "censorship." Thus, a mod (via Nexus Mods) came into being, which rolls back all the changes of Patch 1.5, reverting them to what they were before the devs were reportedly pressured into making these controversial decisions.

Wuchang Fallen Feathers screenshot
Wuchang was otherwise a nice little Soulslike. Image via 505 Games

The mod's creator claims Patch 1.5 "massively downgrades the game experience," and that it has "ruined the game's story and immersion." Whether or not these changes affect the game to this extent is a matter of personal taste, but censoring your title to appease some part of the audience is never a good idea, since it fundamentally reshapes one's artistic vision.

Art is a free form of expression where anyone, including developers, can do whatever they will, including transforming historical cultures, dynasties, characters, and populations into any form, so long as it is good and, as art should be—beautiful.

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers sits at only 50 percent positive reviews on Steam, giving it the "Mixed" rating, though it has been in the user review pits since launch, most notably due to performance woes.

EA FC 25 Legends of the Game Cup guide

A player dribbling past a tackler in Madden 26

A lob pass, and particularly a well-executed one, can crack open the best of defenses in Madden 26, allowing you to secure an easy touchdown.

As a player, you have different pass options when trying to shift the ball to your teammates. Lob passes, like their names suggest, are usually thrown high into the air with the objective of making the ball travel to your receiver. However, you'll want to learn and master the basics to ensure that your pass doesn't convert into a turnover.

How to perform a lob pass in Madden 26

The lob pass is distinctively different from the bullet pass, which is used more frequently. Unlike the bullet pass, the lob pass has a lot more air behind it when executed with the required amount of force. The controls are the same irrespective of your preferred passing style in the game.

  • Snap the ball to your QB.
  • Tap the icon of the player you want to pass. Just tap, and make sure not to keep the icon pressed to open the power button.

If you keep the button pressed, you'll either make a touch pass or a bullet pass. What you need to master is the aspect of timing: when you should hit the lob pass.

When should you throw a lob pass in Madden 26?

The lob pass is supposed to be used in specific situations. You should only go for this type of pass if your runner is well ahead of the man marking him. If the defender is close, a slow pass is only going to be easier to intercept. As such, the chances of a turnover will rise.

This pass is perfect when you want your receiver to receive the ball in an advanced position from where he is at the time of the throw. But always be aware of the defense, and use this pass when you're trying to move up and gain yards actively. Also, you could opt for this pass if you've receivers with excellent vertical jump stats, as they will have better chances of success while gathering the ball.

Ultimately, the lob pass, if overused, becomes a problem. Its best chance of success is to use it at the moment when your runner is almost guaranteed to beat his marker in terms of pace.

View of Neo-Paris from high above in Remember Me.

Before I set the stage, let me first introduce you to our new dramatis persona: Save File Sundays, a series focused on good old games from the previous decades that either went unnoticed or we're just incredibly nostalgic for. Anything goes here, so long as it's relatively aged.

And for the inaugural edition of this new weekly series, we're looking at Remember Me, a Don't Nod Entertainment title released in 2013. It spawned concepts and ideas that would later find their way into the studio's breakthrough episodic hit, Life is Strange, but never became as popular, though it very much deserves the attention.

Cyberpunk corporations condemning the globe

Remember Me is set in a futuristic, cyberpunk Europe. Neo-Paris in 2084, to be exact. The world has been shaped by corporate greed and overreach, and one entity in particular, a megacorp called Memorize, wants to commoditize people's memories, erasing and bending them as it sees fit.

If you've ever wondered what the world of Cyberpunk 2077 looks like across the pond, Don't Nod's 2013 title gives you a very evocative sneak peek as the streets of Paris are equally baroque as they are sci-fi, providing for one of the more unique settings I've ever encountered.

You take control of Nilin, a Memory Hunter in her "past life," whose own memories were stolen and wiped by Memorize after she was interred at La Bastille. The latter is a dystopian megaprison where each and every inmate's memories are seized at the entrance, only to be returned (in whatever capacity the corporation wants) after they have served their sentences.

While waiting for her slate to be wiped clean, Nilin is contacted by a revolutionary called Edge, who helps her break out of La Bastille with the little identity she has left, setting her and you, the player, down a path to recover Nilin's memory and stop Memorize's evil plans.

It's a simple and effective plot which flows down a linear narrative stream, with not much in the way of exploration or open levels. What it isn't is by no means a badly-written game, with dialogues straight out of some high-class literary fiction novel, especially when Nilin, voiced by Kezia Burrows, has her monologues during inter-episodic cutscenes.

With deep philosophy, world-class writing, and heavy-hitting themes, Remember Me truly set Don't Nod's narrative mastery into motion.

Nilin is such an amazing protagonist, despite the game's somewhat quick and brief story. Screenshot by Destructoid

The game unfolds episodically, which Don't Nod would greatly expand upon for Life is Strange. The key difference here is that all the episodes are contained within one big package and not separate releases like Life is Strange has. Still, it's a game with levels that you clear, followed by a cutscene that segues you into the next.

For a 2013 game, it's nothing out of the ordinary. Many titles of the time and before had similar story structures, and to be honest, I'm all here for it. Games today are so obsessed with open-ended gameplay and design that they forget what is actually fun, very often giving players a massive world with nothing to do in it.

Speaking of gameplay, Remember Me is a combination of platforming, linear adventure, and action, with combat taken straight out of the Batman Arkham games.

You can craft your own combos with various different effects, use a bunch of "super" abilities, and generally spam clicks and dodge like in Batman.

For anyone who played Arkham games, the combat should feel right at home. Video by Destructoid

The platforming bit is more Uncharted than Assassin's Creed. It doesn't have a lot of depth and is usually reserved for a heightened level of awe achieved through its cinematic camera. There are secret areas and items to find, including worldbuilding snippets, which usually require platforming, so it has another function as well.

All in all, Remember Me is a simple game, but one that introduced a ton of novel concepts and ideas, some of which would end up in massive AAA releases like Cyberpunk 2077.

Braindances before they were cool

Perhaps the most interesting and unique part of Remember Me is its Memory Remix mechanic, allowing Nilin to utilize her Memory Hunting skills to bend the minds of whomever she wants.

This works by Nilin taking existing memories of a person and changing some of their details, which, via a butterfly effect, makes them remember whatever she wishes them to. For example, when attacked by a bounty hunter, Nilin grabs her and starts remixing her memory, which the player does on their own.

A cutscene first plays, showing you the intact original memory, with the game then prompting you to rewind by moving your mouse in a circle. You then search for various "glitches" in the memory that you can manipulate, trying to push the memory down a new lane that benefits Nilin.

I won't show more to avoid spoiling the fun for you, but if you told me this was a 2077 Braindance, I'd believe you. Video by Destructoid

In this particular instance, you're trying to make the doctor in the bounty hunter's memory kill her husband, for whom she is trying to raise money by collecting the bounty on Nilin's head. You switch up bits and pieces in the cutscene, causing her husband to get consumed by some sort of rage virus, prompting the doctor to kill him instead of asking the bounty hunter to pay up for additional healthcare.

This sort of timeline manipulation and memory alteration is something that'd later be incorporated in Cyberpunk 2077 via its Braindance mechanic, which sort of does the same thing. Instead of manipulating memories and implanting them, however, the player in 2077 just searches for additional information.

Butterfly effects, rewinding, and related ideas also ended up in Life is Strange, Don't Nod's next game after Remember Me, making this little tile a foundational game whose concepts eventually reached a much wider audience, even though not many remember it today.

For this series, I'll be giving a small re-review for each game, focusing on its nostalgia factor and overall quality (impacted by how well it stands today).

So, in the case of Remember Me, here's what I've got:

Nostalgia Factor: 6/10 — Not much is memorable about Remember Me, but its concepts live on in bigger franchises and games, cementing its impact in gaming as a whole.

Recompiled Review Score: 8/10 – 12 years ago, we gave it a 6/10, but so many years down the line, it deserves a bit more.

Closer: Remember Me is a great game that could've done a lot more with its incredibly unique concepts and ideas, but one that does not fail to encapsulate the player with its awe-inspiring world, fantastic characters, impeccable writing quality, and satisfying, if simple, combat.

Let me know what you thought of Remember Me if you've ever played it, or if you're going to play it now that I've spent so much time convincing you to do so.

BitLife Soccer Striker scavenger hunt promo image

Another BitLife scavenger hunt has officially arrived. From August 15 to September 4, you can let your inner sports fan out by participating in the Soccer Striker scavenger hunt. You'll even obtain a special cosmetic item for completing all 11 of its objectives.

BitLife Soccer Strike scavenger hunt guide

BitLife's Soccer Striker scavenger hunt features 11 themed badges you can obtain by completing tasks of varying difficulties. Below is a list of every badge and its required objective:

Badge Answer
Messi Badge Be born in Argentina
Barcelona Badge Emigrate to Spain
Pumping Iron Badge Go to the gym
Charity Badge Donate blood
Posh Badge Marry a celebrity
Centerfold Badge Pose for a magazine
Football Influencer Badge Promote a product on social media
Poker Badge Adopt a Golden Retriever named Poker
High Ball Badge Own a Gulfstream jet
Football Captain Badge Become captain of your school's soccer team
Ronaldo Badge Have a son named Cristiano

The easiest way to finish this scavenger hunt is to have a character born in Argentina who emigrates to Spain. That way, you'll knock out two badges right away, with more available as your character ages.

Let's dive deeper into how to obtain every Soccer Striker scavenger hunt badge.

Messi Badge

The first task you'll encounter during BitLife's Soccer Striker scavenger hunt, the Messi Badge, is obtainable by being born in Argentina. You'll quickly complete it by creating a character whose starting country is Argentina. Your gender, city, and stats won't influence it beyond this, but being born into a wealthy family can help you with future tasks.

Barcelona Badge

Up next is the Barcelona badge, which you'll complete by emigrating to Spain. You can do this with any character, including the new playthrough you started during the previous objective. You can emigrate by heading to Activities, Emigrate, and choosing Spain. If it doesn't appear right away, close and reopen the menu until you find it.

Pumping Iron Badge

The Pumping Iron Badge is next on our list. To earn it, you'll need to hit the gym at some point in your character's life. You can do this by heading into Activities, Mind and Body, and Gym. You'll unlock the gym early on in your playthrough, allowing both teenage and adult characters to go.

Charity Badge

The Charity badge is another easy one on this list, requiring you to donate blood. You'll find this option in the Activities menu again, this time going down to Doctor and Donate Blood. It's best to complete this with a character who has no medical conditions, but you can also hide the truth if you want to cause some trouble. You'll earn the badge regardless of your choice.

Posh Badge

Our first difficult badge in this list is the Posh Badge. For it, you'll need to marry a celebrity. The easiest way to accomplish this is to use BitLife's Celebrity Dating App to pay a $100,000 in-game fee to meet a celebrity. If you're lucky, they'll date and eventually marry you, letting you obtain the badge without much trouble.

However, there are some obstacles you might face. Since each attempt costs $100,000, you'll need a lot of cash to get the ball rolling here. The celebrity can ghost or break up with your character, forcing you to try again with someone else. Your odds of success are higher if your character is also a celebrity, but it's still possible to complete as a non-famous person.

Centerfold Badge

While the previous badge was possible to obtain without being famous, the same can't be said for the Centerfold Badge. For it, you'll need to pose for a magazine, which requires being famous. Here are some careers that can lead to you becoming famous:

  • Socialite (marrying a celebrity)
  • Writer
  • Chef
  • Social media influencer
  • DJ
  • Magician
  • Musician (special career)
  • Athlete (special career)
  • Model (special career)
  • Actor (special career)
  • Astronaut (special career)

Once you become famous, head into Activities, Fame, and Photo Shoot to obtain the badge.

Football Influencer Badge

Being famous in BitLife has multiple perks, including making it much easier to complete the Football Influencer Badge. For this one, you'll need to promote a product on one of your in-game social media profiles. To do this, head into Assets, Social Media, and pick your most popular platform. You'll find a "Promote" option, letting you gain a small amount of money in exchange for a sponsorship deal.

However, not just anyone can do this. You'll need to cultivate a following by working hard to gain subscribers or being famous and obtaining them passively. A safe bet is around 10,000 followers or subscribers, depending on the platform.

Poker Badge

We're now into the most adorable badge on this list, the Poker Badge. Earning this badge requires adopting a golden retriever dog named Poker. You can do this by heading into Activities, Pets, and any of the animal shops available. Visiting the Dog Breeder is by far the easiest option, but you can also go to the animal shelter or pet store if you want to save some money. Adopt a golden retriever dog and change its name to Poker to obtain the badge.

High Ball Badge

The most difficult task of BitLife's Soccer Striker scavenger hunt is to own a Gulfstream jet. Using a wealthy character, head into Shopping and choose either aircraft shop before checking their products. If a Gulfstream doesn't appear, age up or close and reopen BitLife before rechecking the list.

This jet is very expensive. The first one I encountered cost over $20 million, making this a reasonably safe guess for their average in-game price. Like before, being famous and earning money through photo shoots is your best bet for making enough for this, but you can also use your famous spouse's money to expedite the process.

Football Captain Badge

It's time to dial things back with the Football Captain Badge. For this objective, you'll need to join your school's soccer team and become its captain. You can do this as early as middle school, with high school and university also having this option. You can join a school team by selecting School, your school, and the Activities menu.

Here, you have a chance to find soccer among its randomized list. If you don't, graduate from the school your character is currently attending before trying again in high school or university. Much like the science club, you may have to enroll in university multiple times or create a new character if you get unlucky with your options.

Ronaldo Badge

The last task of the Soccer Striker scavenger hunt is to have a child named Cristiano. To do this, find a romantic partner before making love to them through the Relationships menu. You can guarantee you'll have a child by using the Golden Pacifier, but you can also do it naturally by being unprotected and having two young adults perform the deed.

Once you have the child, name it Cristiano to complete the final task of BitLife's Soccer Striker scavenger hunt, rewarding you with the Premier Lion Cap to use on future characters.
