Woof, says one invincible banana dog, I barely see my owner because they wanted me to be a banana dog who regularly changes colour. Alas, this cannot be, so they've had to spend their V-Bucks on a small army of invincible banana dogs in a variety of hues. You try to cheer up this Sidekick by telling them that their owner can at least change their name and hat at any time. It provides little comfort. |
| Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, October 31, 2025 7:31 AM A question I often ask game developers when I've run out of real questions is: what was the hardest part of making your game? Which is a terrible line of inquiry, because it's like asking somebody with their foot in a hornet's nest which individual hornet they dislike the most. As Arc Raiders executive producer Aleksander Grøndal told me in a chat last week, "I can probably sit here and talk to you about all the problems we've had for hours on end, but yeah, game development is always tricky. That's what I can say. There's nothing that comes for free - everything is a constant struggle." Still, the question often gets an interesting response, because as readers of Alex Wiltshire's old The Mechanic series will know, big problems may necessitate inventive solutions. So, what has been the hardest part of making Arc Raiders? Perfecting the slides? Avoiding mandatory player progression resets from season to season? Dealing with reports about the game's generative AI usage? According to Grøndal, it was trying to create an economy of loot and crafting materials - ranging from all-purpose Mechanical Components to rare or uncommon ingredients for specific guns, sometimes found in special field depots - that isn't too "punishing" and which doesn't just feel like accumulating "cash value". |

Scrappy the Rooster is your loyal companion in ARC Raiders, and you can upgrade him to improve his resource-gathering capacities.

You can start upgrading Scrappy pretty soon after beginning your journey in ARC Raiders. There are four levels of upgrades available for your rooster, and this guide will provide you with all the necessary information.

All Scrappy upgrade tiers in ARC Raiders

Here are all four upgrade tiers for Scrappy, along with all the specific requirements.

How to find all Scrappy upgrade items in ARC Raiders

Let's begin with Level 2, which is going to be the first Scrappy upgrade.

 Level 2

Level 2 requires you to find the Dog Collar, and we already have our dedicated guide on the topic. In short, you'll need to look into the Buried City map's residential areas. They can be found either on top of furniture pieces or in bins. Do note that they're also located in other locations, but I found it in Buried City.

 Level 3

The second upgrade requires you to use Lemons and Apricots. Both these items can be found in the swamp area of the Dam Battlegrounds map. We have a dedicated guide to erase all your confusion.

 Level 4

The third upgrade requires the use of Prickly Pears, Olives, and the Cat Bed. The Cat Bed can be found in commercial areas like Testing Annex. However, I found it at Ruby Residence (can also be found at Pale Apartments). Both Ruby Residence and Pale Apartments can be found on the Dam Battlegrounds location.

Olives can be found in the forest area near the Dome Complex (Dam Battlegrounds), while Prickly Pears are found near cactuses. Look out carefully for both these items as they're pretty easy to miss.

 Level 5

The final upgrade level requires Apricots, Mushrooms, and Pillows. We already know where to find Apricots from, as it's also required for the second Scrappy upgrade. For Mushrooms, the best spot is near the Dome Complex, as the foliage tends to have Mushrooms.

I managed to find Pillows from Ruby Residence, but they appear to be available from residential and commercial areas at every location. Be careful not to sell them (as you'll also need them in different crafting recipes).

ARC Raiders is now available worldwide on PC and consoles, and the game's official Discord will be immensely helpful for various reasons.

Whether you're looking for guides or someone to play with, the official Discord is the perfect place. If you're yet to join the community, read on.

How to join the official ARC Raiders Discord community

Joining the Discord is free, and all you require is the invite link. You can complete the task from either the mobile app or the PC client/browser version. You also need to create a Discord account or log in to your existing one.

The official server is broken down into different channels to meet the various needs. The LFG section is my favorite since I don't have a friend to play with. While you can play ARC Raiders solo, it's much better to go in with your buddies. The LFG section, divided into different categories, allows you to meet other like-minded players and matchmake together. You can choose a region of your liking and set up a lobby.

Newbie Corner is where you can hope to get your queries solved. Alternatively, it's a great place to get beginner tips and tricks that will increase your chances of survival. The Raider Chat channel allows you to discuss anything related to the game with other members.

Always keep an eye out for the Game Announcements channel, as it could be the best place to know about new events and time-limited contests. Finally, you can use the Bug Reports channel to report anything out of the ordinary. While I haven't encountered any bug on my ARC Raiders journey so far, you might have. Reporting the bug will allow Embark to quash it for good.

That's pretty much all you need to know about the official Discord that Embark operates. It's the best place to get in touch with the developers directly for any complaints or issues that might arise on your end.

ARC Raiders' introduction of Scrappy will certainly help players to find scrap and items at all times, and finding the Dog Collar will be essential to upgrade and train your companion.

I am unsure as to why Embark chose to name the item "Dog Collar", but it is what it is. You'll have to clear a bit of the early game content to get your hands on the item, and this guide will help you find it in the first place.

How to find the Dog Collar in ARC Raiders

The location of the Dog Collar appears to be best found in residential areas. Keep completing the main questline until you gain access to the Buried City map in ARC Raiders. You can also find a Dog Collar on the Spaceport map.

I have marked the locations on the screenshot above to make it convenient for you to find the Dog Collar. Once you're at the marked locations, look on top of random items like furniture as you can find them at random. I, incidentally, found one inside a bin, so that's another place to look at. Here are the locations to specifically look for in Buried City.

How to use the Dog Collar in ARC Raiders

The Dog Collar is required for obtaining your first Scrappy upgrade, and using it is pretty simple. You'll first need to find the item and then extract it successfully into your inventory. You can toggle the 'Train Scrappy' option to make things easier, which will automatically mark the item in your inventory. To reduce the risk, make sure to place it in your free inventory to avoid losing it in case of death.

You can then use the Dog Collar to train Scrappy and upgrade him to the next level. In the playtest, we also required a Torn Blanket along with the Dog Collar, which is no longer the case in ARC Raiders.
