Welcome to the Week in Review
Welcome
Nintendo likes to do things its own way. No pre-planned event with advance warning for media and fans, no glitzy presentation with excitable execs onstage and artfully shot promo films starring celebrities. No, the official reveal of the boringly named Nintendo Switch 2 was instead conducted via a teaser trailer on YouTube.

In two minutes and 21 seconds it answered a few questions, confirmed a few rumors, and left us with plenty still to learn about the follow-up to one of the best-selling consoles of all time. And you know what? That’s fine. Anticipation has its own virtues, and I’ll be eagerly awaiting more nuggets of information about the Switch 2 over the coming days and weeks.

You can expect a rather different experience at Samsung Unpacked next week. Not only is there not much left to learn about the Galaxy S25 series – which we can be fairly confident will be revealed on Wednesday – but you can also be sure that the launch will be everything the Switch unveiling was not.

TikTok users will also have been anticipating news this week – albeit with trepidation rather than excitement – from the US Supreme Court. It’s still unclear whether the social media app will indeed be banned this weekend, but at the time of writing it looks likely – follow our live blog linked below for the very latest.

Still, if it is banned you can console yourself by spending some extra time with that older form of entertainment, TV. I’ll be devouring the first episode of Severance season 2 on Apple TV Plus tonight, then rewatching Twin Peaks for the 11th time in honor of the late, great David Lynch. That’s a better way to spend your time than on TikTok anyway, trust me.

Far Cry 3 Steam achievements are finally here as Ubisoft rollout continues

Far Cry 3 feels like a tipping point in Ubisoft's catalog. It was a dramatic shift in tone from its predecessor, embracing full-tilt chaos and leaning into the open-world formula that the Assassin's Creed games had so dramatically popularized over the few years prior. It was also an absolute blast, and if you've ever been tempted to revisit the misadventures of its peril-plagued, party-going protagonist Jason Brody, there's now one more reason, as Ubisoft finally pushes the much-requested Steam achievements feature live.

Monster Hunter Wilds Sword and Shield overview - moveset and how to use

How do you use the Monster Hunter Wilds Sword and Shield? Often abbreviated to the SnS, this classic medieval setup is the perfect way to ease into Wilds. One of the lighter Monster Hunter weapons, the Sword and Shield lets you dance around monsters to cut and slash through the toughest hides.

The Sword and Shield is an agile Monster Hunter Wilds weapon that balances offense and defense, allowing for a far more flexible playstyle than one-note weapons such as the MHW Great Sword. This makes it a great pick for Monster Hunter Wilds beginners who prefer to stay light on their feet in the RPG game. Boasting high damage-per-second, fast recovery times, and highly adaptable combos, the SnS has a deceptively high skill ceiling, so here's how to master it.

Monster Hunter Wilds Hammer overview - moveset and how to use

How do you use the Monster Hunter Wilds Hammer? The Hammer is a heavy weapon with striking mobility and a moveset packed with combo attacks. It also has a high chance to stun any monster unfortunate enough to be on the receiving end of its trademark golf swing, leaving wounds and weak spots wide open.

The Hammer can be considered a blunt alternative to the MHW Great Sword. Both offer the satisfaction of wielding a massive Monster Hunter Wilds weapon, but the Hammer has the edge in both speed and agility. It's an ideal weapon for players who prefer to attack and ask questions later in Monster Hunter Wilds, but its inability to guard demands careful timing. Here's how to master the Hammer and land those powerful swings when it counts.

I played Indiana Jones on an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090, and it hits 213fps at 5K

If you thought your 4K gaming setup was pretty hardcore, then be prepared to eat humble pie, as Nvidia has demonstrated that 5K (5,120 x 2,880) gaming is not only possible on the new Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090, but you can even manage it in demanding titles such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. I had a chance to play the game with DLSS 4 at CES, and was surprised by not only the sharpness of the image, but also the smoothness of the frame rate.

The Indiana Jones and the Great Circle system requirements are about as demanding as you can get, with ray tracing enabled on all settings, and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 required to run the game maxed out with full path tracing enabled. However, thanks to some magic from DLSS 4 Multi Frame Gen, you can play the game at over 200fps on a 5K monitor, using the new RTX 5090.

Arknights Endfield banners - beta and beginner banners

What are the Arknight Endfield banners? Having finally entered closed beta, we've been able to get a proper look at what Hypergryph is offering Endfield players as far as premium characters are concerned. From what we've seen so far, they don't disappoint.

Of course, to pull for new Arknights Endfield characters you're going to need to try your luck on one of the Arknights Endfield banners. As of the beta, there are two different banners to pull from in the gacha game: one beginner banner and one limited banner. If you've managed to get access to the open-world game early, we recommend splashing your Oroberyl on the former - it's a heck of a deal - before moving on to the latter. To find out what they include, read on.

Monster Hunter Wilds Hunting Horn overview - moveset and how to use

How do you use the Monster Hunter Wilds Hunting Horn? This unconventional blunt weapon is what happens when you put a Hammer in the hands of a Rock Band enthusiast. The result is a comically large melee weapon you can swing at your enemies while chaining musical notes to boost your stats.

In short, the Hunting Horn is the closest that Monster Hunter Wilds comes to a bard, which makes it perfect for players who prefer to take a support role in multiplayer. However, if you're looking for brute strength, don't let that dissuade you. The Hunting Horn remains a solid Monster Hunter Wilds weapon when playing solo in the RPG game thanks to its wide range of powerful buffs and stun attacks. Here's how to put on a show with the Hunting Horn and slay monsters with your stellar performance.

We could make a Ryzen 9 9950X3D with 3D V-cache on all 16 cores, AMD tells us

AMD has confirmed that it could make a limited-edition 16-core Ryzen X3D CPU with 3D V-cache on all 16 cores, and that it's going to analyze whether it's worth it, but that it thinks it will be a very niche product. I had the chance to catch up with AMD's senior technical marketing manager of consumer processors, Donny Woligroski, at CES, where we discussed the potential pros and cons of a limited edition AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D with 3D V-cache on both CCDs.

AMD announced the new Ryzen 9 9950X3D at the tradeshow, coming a couple of months after we wrote our Ryzen 7 9800X3D review, promising not only massive multi-threaded performance, but also fast gaming performance thanks to its 3D V-cache. However, the new chip still only has 3D V-cache for eight of the cores, while the other eight cores have no 3D V-cache underneath them, but they do have a higher clock speed to make the most of multi-threaded workloads, such as video encoding and 3D rendering. That's arguably the best mix if you want a CPU that can do everything, but could there also be potential for an AMD 16-core X3D CPU where every core has immediate access to 3D V-cache?

AMD Radeon RX 9070 release date, price, and specs

The AMD Radeon RX 9070 is official, following AMD's unveiling of its latest gaming GPUs at CES 2025. Details of the new card are still thin on the ground, but we know it will be coming out very soon and will be fighting it out with the Nvidia RTX 5070 for mid-range graphics card supremacy.

Unveiled alongside AMD's top-tier card, the RX 9070 XT, the RX 9070 is the second-tier option out of the company's new RDNA 4 gaming GPU lineup. It's not set to be the very fastest card to grace our best graphics cards guide but could make for a great value option for those seeking a reasonably affordable option.

Historical 4X game Old World makes ambition victories easier in new update

With Civilization 7 just around the corner, you'd be forgiven for having a real itch for a great 4X game, and the latest Old World update might just be the solution. Built by Mohawk Games and published by Hooded Horse, it blends all the exploring, expanding, exploiting, and exterminating that you love with more personality-driven events and drama in the vein of grand strategy games such as Crusader Kings 3. Whether you're already a fan or have yet to try it, the fresh Old World update makes its ambition victory easier to achieve, reworks Grand Viziers from its most recent DLC, and clears up some confusion around difficulty settings.

This AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT specs leak appears to reveal gaming GPU's key details

AMD has been curiously tight-lipped about the details of its recently-announced new GPUs, but this AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT specs leak appears to reveal what the company has waiting in the wings. Not only that, but the Radeon RX 9070 specs have also appeared in the same leak, with both GPUs looking like solid mid-range contenders, if AMD can get the pricing right.

There's no word on the official Radeon RX 9070 XT release date yet, but Nvidia has already confirmed the RTX 5070 release date is February 2025, so AMD is going to need to get its new GPUs out sooner rather than later. The graphics cards also clearly already exist, as we spotted many Radeon RX 9070 XT cards while we were at CES earlier this month, including the PowerColor card pictured above. But what's potentially coming with these new GPUs? Let's dig into this latest specs leak.

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is mere weeks away from its full launch.      Arknights Endfield codes January 2025

Are there any active Arknights Endfield codes? Hypergryph's upcoming sci-fi RPG has finally entered closed beta, and it's already clear we're going to need a little help expanding the human footprint on the moon Talos-II, defeating the powerful Aggeloi threat as we go. If the original Arknights is anything to go by, Endfield players will also be treated to redeemable freebies here and there.

Shifting away from the mobile-only tower defense approach it took with Arknights, Hypergryph has built Arknights Endfield into a stunning open-world game with robust base-building elements. Alongside extra resources to help you create the ultimate industrial complex, we expect a wedge of Oroberyl, the game's premium currency, to arrive with many of the codes - Endfield is a gacha game, after all.

Death Howl is a beautiful new dark fantasy deckbuilder, and a demo is imminent

It's always pleasing when something comes across my desk that immediately catches the eye, and Death Howl is a perfect example. This new game from three-person developer The Outer Zone, published by Frostpunk's 11 Bit Studios, brings together Nordic mythology, the deckbuilding of Slay the Spire, the positional tactics of Into the Breach, and the stunning world and monster design of soulslikes such as Elden Ring. The result is a gorgeous, highly stylized tale of grief where you face off against fearsome foes in strategic, grid-based battles, and you can try it very soon.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 only 30% faster than RTX 4090 without DLSS 4

Nvidia has revealed that its new flagship gaming GPU, the RTX 5090, is only 30% faster than the RTX 4090 in ray-traced game performance if you don't engage its multi-frame generation DLSS 4 tech. That corresponds roughly with the 33% increase in CUDA cores on the new card, but points to its architecture not offering any extra hidden performance gains.

With the Nvidia RTX 5090 all but a nailed-on certainty to be the fastest and ultimately best graphics card you'll be able to buy this year, it will still be a hugely tempting option for anyone seeking the latest and greatest. However, those hoping a 33% CUDA core count increase and corresponding price increase would result in an even larger performance improvement might be a bit disappointed.

There's a lot you can do with a third dimension. Texture. Nativity dioramas. Spheres. Hyper Light Breaker, in expanding from the 2D action of Hyper Light Drifter, chooses to almost entirely remake itself as a free-roaming roguelike, trading post-apocalyptic pixel art for big proc-gen vistas and even more acrobatic swordplay.

Its technical ambition, sadly, ends up undermined by the emptiness of its world, the lack of exploratory pleasure that Drifter nurtured so well, and combat that's more faithful to the original yet doesn't quite adapt well enough to 3D. Not to mention it has more than its fair share of early access bugs and, especially in the early stages, balancing missteps.

Three-person Danish team The Outer Zone and Frostpunk creators 11-bit studios have announced Death Howl, a very gloomy soulslike deck-builder set in a "stone-age Nordic-inspired" open world that consists of biomes with names like "the Forest of Howling Shadows". Lots of howling round these parts.

You play a mother, Ro, whose son has been claimed by the Grim Reaper, or whatever they had instead of the Grim Reaper back then - this was, I think, prior to the invention of scythes? And cards? Anyway, while searching for Ro's son, you'll take part in grid- and turn-based battles against a regular cauldron of unspeakables, including disembodied raven heads and what appears to be a huge pair of subterranean lungs. Here's a trailer.

HoYoVerse shared all the materials you can already start gathering for Genshin Impact character Lan Yan, as well as showed off her skills.

We're about a week away from Lan Yan making her Genshin Impact debut, but it turns out we can already gather all her materials now. HoYoVerse revealed everything the new four-star unit will need. It also shared a Collected Miscellany video going over the skills Lan Yan can use in Genshin Impact.

As usual, the materials for Lan Yan in Genshin Impact are split into Ascension materials for leveling her up and Talent materials. Both of them require Whopperflower Nectar, Shimmering Nectar, and Energy Nectar, which are dropped by Cryo, Electro, and Pyro Whooperflower enemies. To level her up, you also need the Gold-Inscribed Secret Source Core dropped by the Secret Source Automaton: Configuration Device Normal Boss in Natlan. Items in the Vayuda Turquoise are used to level her up too, as are the new Clearwater Jades found in the Chenyu Vale area of Liyue. Her Talents also require the Teachings of Diligence books from Liyue's Taishan Mansion and the Eroded Sunfire drop from the Lord of Eroded Primal Fire Weekly Boss in Natlan.

Here's the full "Lan Yan: Ink-Feather Formation" Genshin Impact Collected Miscellany video. After a brief look at her in-game, we get to see her Swallow-Wisp Pinion Dance Elemental Skill. That causes her to gain a shield that has an Elemental Absorption ability if you dash into an enemy with an element, due to her Four Sealing Divination Charms passive. Toward the end, we get to see how her Lustrous Moonrise Elemental Burst ultimate attack works against foes. That is an Anemo area of effect attack.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6syttY8u6uc&ab_channel=GenshinImpact

As a reminder, Lan Yan is a permanent addition to the Genshin Impact roster. She'll be available on all banners after her January 21, 2025 debut. She is also one of the four possible Liyue four-star units you can earn and get for free during the 2025 Lantern Rite event.

Genshin Impact is available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, PC and mobile devices, and Lan Yan will debut on the January 21, 2025 banner.

Fields of Mistria March Update Adds Caldarus Romance

NPC Studio issued an update on Fields of Mistria, saying there will be a big patch in March 2025 that adds the Caldarus romance, Deep Woods area, and pets. There will also be more to do in the mines, more repairs around town, and the ability to set up a Sprinkler.

The Caldarus romance is the first new element in the list of Fields of Mistria additions. The notes don't mention if when he launches, he'll also have all of his heart events up to 6 to bring him up to par with the other love interests as of the November 2024 update. While the dragon is currently present in-game via a statue that appears on your farm, he doesn't show up as an NPC. The message also noted that Elsie will be able to give hints about gifts to give to everyone in town, and there will be more dialogue for people.

When it comes to the Deep Woods, that will be among the new additions that comes up when you improve Mistria. Right now, that region is blocked off by thorns and inaccessible. The town will also hold a new type of festival, there will be a new quest to repair it, and there will be more Museum and Request Board tasks.

The Mine area basically adds more floors. The Fire Seal can be fulfilled, and there will be a new Biome to reach. If you've been keeping up with tiers and unlocks, that also means new furniture to find in chests and critter and relic item sets for the museum.

Finally, some of the additions like pets and sprinklers come up in the more miscellaneous additions and quality of life adjustments in the Fields of Mistria March 2025 update. Sprinklers will offer a new way to water. Pets will involve a new type of animal on the farm. There will also be an option to adjust the flow of time.

Here's the official announcement showing the new Fields of Mistria roadmap for March 2025 and beyond.

Fields of Mistria is available on PCs in early access, and the March 2025 update is on the way.

Guilty Gear Strive Venom DLC Delayed

We won't see Venom return to the Guilty Gear series exactly when Arc System Works planned, as the developer announced the Guilty Gear Strive DLC that brings him to the game ended up delayed. He was initially supposed to appear at the beginning of 2025. His new launch window is the end of March 2025.

The general reason for Venom being delayed is "quality control." Arc System Works said the goal is to ensure the fighter is at his best when he debuts. As such, he'll launch after ARC WORLD TOUR Finals 2024. That runs between March 21-23, 2025, which means we'll likely see more about him at the event. Then, he will probably launch sometime between March 24-31, 2025.

Venom has been a series staple since 2000, when he debuted in Guilty Gear X. While he wasn't in Guilty Gear Strive at launch, he did appear in the two preceding games Guilty Gear Xrd: Sign and Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator

The first character in Guilty Gear Strive Season Pass 4 was Queen Dizzy. She was the first add-on fighter to appear. While she shows up at an additional cost on some platforms, she's free on the Switch. We also saw the Team of 3 mode appear in the November 20, 2024 patch.

After the Venom DLC arrives for Guilty Gear Strive, there are two more people on the way. One is Unika from the Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers anime, and the other is crossover character Lucy from the anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

Guilty Gear Strive is available on the Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and PC, and the Venom DLC will debut in March 2025.

Macross 7 Transformers Synergenex crossover is Basara Prime

Takara Tomy has revealed a new Synergenex action figure based on a crossover between Macross 7 and Transformers at T-Spark Zone 2025. The new unit will be named Basara Prime—a combination of the protagonist names Basara Nekki and Optimus Prime. [Thanks, Hobby Watch!]

The company is also showcasing an unpainted prototype of the crossover toy at the event. It shows how the upcoming toy will feature a fusion between Optimus Prime and Basara's VF-19 Excalibur Custom "Fire Valkyrie." The unit will also have a properly scaled guitar with a shoulder strap.

This crossover action figure will appear to celebrate the anniversaries of both Macross 7 and Transformers. When Takara Tomy revealed the Synergenex brand in 2024, Transformers had its 40th anniversary from the first toy line released in 1984. Macross 7 also had its 30th anniversary since the first TV episode aired in 1994.

Basara Prime is not the only crossover unit Takara Tomy revealed at the event. The company also announced a new version of the Transformers - Monster Hunter crossover unit Rathalos Prime. Takara Tomy and Capcom previously revealed at TGS 2024 that they would release the original Rathalos Prime action figure worldwide in late July 2025.

The Basara Prime Synergenex crossover action figure will be available in the 2025-2026 Winter season. An unpainted prototype is on display at T-Spark Zone 2025, which is held on the fourth floor of Akiba Cultures Zone until January 19, 2025.

Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket Trades Need Items

The Pokemon Company International issued an update on Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket, and it covered the upcoming trade feature and teased new booster packs. Both are on the way, though there will be items and limitations when we choose to swap cards.

In the case of trading in Pokemon TCG Pocket, we can't just do any types of trades with anyone and any cards, and a consumable item will be needed. So if you don't have the as-yet-unnamed item or friends, you can't participate in a swap. You also can only trade cards of equivalent value, so you can't give a "gift" to your friend of a one star card for a one or two diamond one.

The other limitations are tied to the types of cards that you can trade. Ones with a rarity of one through four diamonds can be swapped for equivalent ones. One star cards can also be traded for other single star ones. The only booster packs at the launch of the feature that can be traded are Genetic Apex and Mythical Island, which are the only two types available at the moment.

As for future Pokemon TCG Pocket cards, there will be new booster packs headed to the game. However, we don't know what these additions will look like. The Pokemon Company International only noted that an update is planned for January 2025.

Here's the full update from social media:

The new Pachinko game will have a regular jackpot rate of 1/399, but there will be a special Zetsu-Hiden Rush Mode that increases the rate to 1/63.5. The Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero Hero of Justice DLC adds more Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero Gohan and Piccolo forms.

Bandai Namco announced the first Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero DLC is the Hero of Justice, and it adds 11 characters from the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie. People with the Season Pass get early access to it on January 20, 2025. Everyone else can play it on January 23, 2025.

We already knew Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 would be in this collection. But the new trailer confirmed the other additions and alts that will appear. However, while there are 11 characters in the Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero Hero of Justice DLC, most of them are alternate forms of Gohan and Piccolo. There are four different Gohans and four Piccolos.

Here's the full list of characters we see. As some of them don't have their proper names appear in it, such as the SSJ form of Gohan, in some cases they are placeholders based on what we know about the movie.

  • Cell Max
  • Gamma 1
  • Gamma 2
  • Gohan Beast
  • Gohan (SH)
  • Orange Piccolo
  • Orange Piccolo (Awakened)
  • Piccolo (SH)
  • Piccolo (SH Awakened)
  • SSJ Gohan
  • Ultimate Gohan

Here's the trailer introducing the newest add-on. At the end, it confirmed three custom battles, like one against Cell Max, are a part of the DLC. It also showed a new costume.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxtCkDbZHZA&ab_channel=BandaiNamcoEntertainmentAmerica

We do have an idea of what's coming after this add-on. The second pack will be tied to Dragon Ball Daima. So far, Glorio and Vegeta (Mini) are confirmed characters for it. The third DLC set will also feature Dragon Ball Daima

Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero is available on the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC, and the Hero of Justice DLC debuts on January 20, 2025 for Season Pass holders and everyone else on January 23, 2025.

Gundam GQuuuuuuX has an insert song by Hoshimachi Suisei

Sunrise and Khara have revealed that Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuux -Beginning- has an insert song performed by the Hololive Vtuber Hoshimachi Suisei. The song is titled "Mou dou nattemo iiya," which could be roughly translated to "I don't care anymore whatever happens."

We have previously learned that Kenshi Yonezu's song "Plazma" would appear as the opening theme song that plays at the beginning of the Gundam GQuuuuuux theatrical edit. Hoshimachi Suisei's song is designated as an insert song, which means it will play in the middle of the show.

Hoshimachi Suisei is not the only one to provide an insert song in Gundam GQuuuuuux -Beginning-. Sunrise and Khara also simultaneously revealed that the Japanese music unit Nomelon Nolemon performed another insert song titled "Midnight Reflection."

The official Japanese X account for Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuux has a new tweet containing comments from both Hoshimachi Suisei and Nomelon Nolemon:

Is there Chaos Difficulty Level in Dynasty Warriors Origins

Most games in Koei Tecmo and Omega Force's Dynasty Warriors series have a difficulty level higher than Hard, which usually also has exclusive challenges that reward the strongest weapons. The difficulty level is usually known in English as "Chaos," and long-time players of the series will wonder whether Dynasty Warriors Origins also has one.

The short answer to this question is: Yes. However, the difficulty level has a different name from prior entries. In addition, be advised that the more detailed answer will include some post-game content spoilers.

When you are just starting Dynasty Warriors Origins, you can only choose from the Historian, Wayfarer, and Hero difficulty levels, which were originally known as Easy, Normal, and Hard. There will be no further difficulty level available... until you have reached an ending in your first story playthrough. One of the post-game content unlocks in Dynasty Warriors Origins will be the past series' equivalent of the Chaos difficulty level, which is now known as "Ultimate Warrior."

The Ultimate Warrior difficulty will be even more relentless than the initially available Hero difficulty. In addition to increasingly aggressive soldiers, the time frame to register parries and perfect evasions will also become even shorter. However, players will also be able to enjoy drops of weapons with far better traits as a reward.

Screenshot by Siliconera

When you check the stage descriptions in the post-game playthrough, you can also notice new Challenge missions listed at the bottom right corner. Completing these challenges will let you unlock exclusive content that will also count toward the whole game's collection percentages. However, be advised that these Challenges must be done on the Ultimate Warrior difficulty for the rewards to be given.

The Challenge rewards also have another difference from prior series entries. Earlier Dynasty Warriors games would only have challenges on the Chaos difficulty level to let players obtain the strongest weapons. In Dynasty Warriors Origins, these rewards are not limited to just weapons.

Some of the Challenges will reward unique horses like the legendary Red Hare and Liu Bei's Hex Mark. Some others will come with exclusive Accessories and Battle Arts that the protagonist can equip. The reward list will also include additional troops to further enlarge the protagonist's bodyguard unit and Old Coins that must be collected to unlock the remaining rewards at the Shui Jing Retreat.

Dynasty Warriors Origins is readily available worldwide on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Dynasty Warriors Origins semi-unique officers - Gongsun Zan

While Koei Tecmo's history-based Musou / Warriors games are known to have numerous unique characters officially known as Musou Officers, they also have many other warriors and tacticians portrayed with generic designs. However, in some of the entries, there are several characters whose designs have more distinctions than generic officers but not as much as the well-established unique characters. These semi-unique officers were most prominently seen in the Samurai Warriors 4 sub-series, but we have also spotted Koei Tecmo employing a similar approach in Dynasty Warriors Origins.

One can distinguish the semi-unique characters from generic officers in Dynasty Warriors Origins by noticing that they have proper face profiles in the list of officers and in-battle conversations, as opposed to the darkened eyes for generic general portraits. However, despite having unique faces, they still share the same outfit and headgear with other generic officers, albeit occasionally with different colors. We have identified ten figures who fit the bill in this title.

The first of the ten semi-unique characters we spotted in Dynasty Warriors Origins is Gongsun Zan. He developed a close friendship with Liu Bei as they studied under the same teacher, and Gongsun Zan would later become the governor of Beiping. He also frequently clashed with Yuan Shao, with the latter eventually coming out as the overall victor.

Dynasty Warriors Origins semi-unique officers - Zhu Jun and Huangfu Song
Screenshot by Siliconera

Zhu Jun and Huangfu Song are best known for their tenure as commanders in the Han imperial army during the Yellow Turban Rebellion. Although the Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel omitted both characters during the Dong Zhuo arc, they actually still had some roles mentioned during the period in historical records.

Zhu Jun joined the Anti-Dong Zhuo coalition with most other warlords. As for Huangfu Song, despite initially having a growing feud with Dong Zhuo, the two eventually came to good terms after Huangfu Song's son, who was close to Dong Zhuo, pleaded with the latter not to execute his father.

Dynasty Warriors Origins semi-unique officers - Wang Yun
Screenshot by Siliconera

Wang Yun is a Han official who is best known for his plot to have Lu Bu betray and kill Dong Zhuo. In the Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel, he did it by having Diaochan—a fictional character depicted as his adopted daughter—seduce both Dong Zhuo and Lu Bu so that the two would fight over her.

Dynasty Warriors Origins semi-unique officers - Kong Rong
Screenshot by Siliconera

Kong Rong is one of the descendants of Confucius. During his tenure as the Chancellor of Beihai, his territory was raided by Yellow Turban remnants. However, he was rescued by Taishi Ci, who wanted to thank him for treating his mother well. Kong Rong eventually went to serve the Han imperial court under Cao Cao's control after Yuan Shao's army conquered his lands.

Dynasty Warriors Origins semi-unique officers - Tao Qian
Screenshot by Siliconera

Tao Qian is the governor of Xu Province who was put in the spotlight when his subordinate Zhang Kai, whom he tasked to escort Cao Cao's father Cao Song, killed the latter instead to loot his riches for Zhang Kai's own benefit. Cao Cao directed his anger towards Tao Qian nevertheless, which then sparked the former's relentless invasion of Xu Province.

Dynasty Warriors Origins semi-unique officers - Ji Ling
Screenshot by Siliconera

Ji Ling is a general who serves the eventual self-proclaimed emperor Yuan Shu. He was also tasked to lead an invasion of Liu Bei's fief in Xiaopei, although it was cut short when Lu Bu appeared and brokered a ceasefire. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel described his weapon as a trident that looks exactly like Yu Jin's weapon of choice in the more recent Dynasty Warriors entries.

Dynasty Warriors Origins semi-unique officers - Liu Biao
Screenshot by Siliconera

Liu Biao is a Han official best known for his tenure as the governor of Jing Province in the early years of the period covered in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel. As he had also entered an alliance with Yuan Shao, the latter's relative and rival Yuan Shu ordered the Sun clan to invade his fief. Liu Biao would later shelter fellow relative Liu Bei when the latter was fleeing away from Cao Cao.

Dynasty Warriors Origins semi-unique officers - Huang Zu
Screenshot by Siliconera

Huang Zu is a subordinate of Liu Biao who also has his own fief in the Jing Province. He gained enmity from the Sun clan for leading a plot that successfully killed the latter's leader Sun Jian during the Battle of Xiangyang.

Dynasty Warriors Origins semi-unique officers - Ling Cao
Screenshot by Siliconera

And last but not least, we also have Ling Cao, Ling Tong's father who joined Sun Ce when the latter launched a campaign to conquer the Wu territories. He was ultimately killed by Gan Ning when Sun Quan tried to launch his first attack on the latter's liege Huang Zu.

As a side note, the semi-unique designs do not represent the characters' final designs until Koei Tecmo promotes them to full-fledged unique Musou Officers. Half of the characters in this list—Wang Yun, Ji Ling, Ling Cao, Liu Biao, and Huang Zu—had also received unique-like designs in the now-defunct mobile game Dynasty Warriors Blast. However, none of those are reflected in their semi-unique officer designs in Dynasty Warriors Origins.

These semi-unique characters appear in Dynasty Warriors Origins, available worldwide on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Dynasty Warriors Origins Free Mode - Sun Shangxiang with Liu Bei

One of the most asked questions from long-time Dynasty Warriors players whenever a new game comes out—including the most recent Dynasty Warriors Origins—is about the existence of a Free Mode. This mode lets the player access battles unlocked from the main Story Mode with any playable character—including those from unrelated factions and lifespans.

The short answer to this question is: Yes, Dynasty Warriors Origins does have some sort of a Free Mode. However, you will need to take quite a long time to make it available. Be advised that the more detailed answer below will contain some post-game content spoilers.

Somewhere at the middle point of the game's overall storyline, you will notice a new "Story" entry added to the Inn or Lodgings menu in any city. This sub-menu will list all of the main storyline's cutscenes and battles that you have seen. But while you can replay the available cutscenes right away, pressing the confirmation button on a battle entry will still do nothing yet when you just unlock the menu.

It turns out that you must first reach the ending in your story playthrough. The game will then have the so-called Free Mode unlocked as part of the post-game content. Only after that, you can finally access any battles that have been unlocked in the Story menu.

Dynasty Warriors Origins - Free mode battles
Screenshot by Siliconera

But as Dynasty Warriors Origins is more focused on making the original protagonist "Ziluan" the main playable character, the game's Free Mode will let you bring a companion character outside of the original faction. If you have unlocked a certain strongest warrior as an extra companion as part of the post-game content, you can also bring him to the battles. However, there are a couple of caveats to this feature.

The first caveat is that you cannot bring companion characters who already appear on the stage as enemies. For example, if you're playing a stage where you're fighting against Liu Bei's faction and both Guan Yu and Zhang Fei appear as enemies, you cannot bring them as your companions.

In addition, companions are only available when the stage does allow bringing one to begin with. That also means since Chapter 1 did not introduce you to the feature yet, none of the stages in the chapter have any companion access.

There are also some stages with other exceptions for the feature, such as the Battle of Changban on Liu Bei's side. This stage has different starting events and missions determined by your companion choice between Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun, so the Free Mode version still restricts the choices to only those two.

Dynasty Warriors Origins is available worldwide on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Pursue Lu Bu in first encounter stage in Dynasty Warriors Origins

Pursuing Lu Bu, the strongest warrior of the Chinese Three Kingdoms era, has been a widely discussed topic in the Dynasty Warriors user base. It originated from Yuan Shao's "Do not pursue Lu Bu!" quote in Dynasty Warriors 3, and many players have since tried to "defy" the order whenever they encounter the character in subsequent series entries. With the new game Dynasty Warriors Origins coming out, some players may wonder whether they can also pursue Lu Bu there.

The short answer to this question is: Yes. However, it is not really recommended to attempt the feat on your first playthrough. Even if you have the playing skills to beat Lu Bu, your character's low level and stats will make the feat take a long time to accomplish and it may even end up compromising the stage's main objectives.

For example, the very first stage you encounter Lu Bu will be "Assassination of Dong Zhuo," where you are primarily tasked to escort Cao Cao's escape. If you can whittle enough of Lu Bu's HP, he will leave the stage. But if you try to fight him right from the beginning of the stage, Cao Cao will try to escape on his own and end up getting overwhelmed by other enemy officers due to morale disadvantage, thus causing you to lose the stage.

If you want to successfully pursue Lu Bu without compromising the stage's primary objective in Dynasty Warriors Origins, you will have to determine the right time and conditions to make the pursuit.

Pursue Lu Bu at Hulao Gate in Dynasty Warriors Origins
Screenshot by Siliconera

You will encounter Lu Bu once again in Chapter 2 at the "Battle of Hulao Gate" stage. Your chance to pursue Lu Bu will appear when Liu Bei and his sworn brothers are holding him off. However, other allied officers will usually struggle to capture the remaining bases at the same time. If you want to mitigate ally losses as much as possible, I would suggest first to finish conquering the bases so you can focus on fighting Lu Bu afterward.

Actually defeating Lu Bu at the Battle of Hulao Gate will also be a key task for game content completion later on. Once you have unlocked a new harder difficulty level, its exclusive mission for the stage will challenge you to do the exact feat with a new powerful weapon as a reward.

Lu Bu is one of the characters appearing in Dynasty Warriors Origins, available worldwide on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Dynasty Warriors Origins Chapter 3 Branch

As announced at Tokyo Game Show 2024, Dynasty Warriors Origins has a story branch where the game's original protagonist will make an important decision to swear allegiance with one of the three factions that would eventually form the Three Kingdoms in Chinese history. After collaborating in united fronts against the Yellow Turbans in Chapter 1 and Dong Zhuo in Chapter 2, the story branch will finally appear in Chapter 3. Here's how the game will eventually lead the player to the branch.

When you start Chapter 3 in Dynasty Warriors Origins, you will notice faction markers appearing at the top left corner of the world map screen. These markers indicate the number of battles for each side you can participate in before the game starts locking the routes. You can therefore travel all over the country and aid each faction in the allotted number of battles without any consequences.

After progressing through a universal key episode revolving around the protagonist's memories, there will be the first point of no return appearing as a checkpoint. It will lock out the player from factions with which they have not completed all of the pre-allocated stages. If you have completed the battles for the faction(s) you want to support, you may proceed ahead.

The real story branch in Dynasty Warriors Origins will appear right after the above checkpoint. If you still retain access to both Liu Bei and Cao Cao's factions, a new stage will be set up for the Battle of Xu Province, which will pit both factions on the opposing sides. This is where you will have to make the ultimate decision. The faction you don't choose in this battle will be finally locked out for the rest of the story playthrough.

As a side note, joining Liu Bei's faction will require you to go into conflict against not only Cao Cao but also the Sun clan, so there will only be a single path remaining to tread. On the other hand, if you choose to side with Cao Cao at the Battle of Xu Province, you can also continue progressing through the Sun clan's route at the same time. If you're like me and finish both routes in the same playthrough, there will be a slight time-saving benefit later on.

Dynasty Warriors Origins is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
