Last week's gut-wrenching flurry of game cancellations and layoffs due to Microsoft's Xbox Game Studios cuts didn't just affect the company's owned, first-party studios. Third-party developers, like Romero Games, were impacted too. The studio formed by Doom co-creator John Romero announced that funding for its upcoming, triple-A FPS game had been pulled, and dozens of devs announced they were being let go, with some claiming the whole studio was shutting down. However, there's a glimmer of hope for Romero Games and its new project, as the studio has just released a new statement clarifying that the studio hasn't fully closed and that other publishers have reached out that are "interested in helping us bring the game across the finish line."

What makes an FPS game feel original? In the original Half-Life, it's the combination of combat and puzzles and the subtle attention paid to story, both newisms in 1998. Zenless Zone Zero Ellen Joe Figure Pre-orders Open Soon

Apex-Toys announced on social media that it is about to open pre-orders for its Zenless Zone Zero figure of Ellen Joe. Its official site teased pre-orders would open on Tmall on July 8, 2025. There are no other retailers taking orders yet, but in the past Amazon and AmiAmi offered worldwide shipping for other Apex-Toys figures of HoYoVerse figures including a daily life figure of the character in her school uniform.

Ellen Joe is wearing her maid uniform that is a trademark of Victoria Housekeeping faction members in Zenless Zone Zero for this figure. (It's known as Ellen Scissorhands in-game.) The shark girl Thiren's tail is curled around her body. While she has her weapon equipped, she's in a more relaxed pose and doesn't look like she's about to attack.

Here's how the first four photos Apex-Toys shared with us look:

This follows the release of other Victoria Housekeeping Zenless Zone Zero figures. Apex-Toys already announced ones of Corin Wickes, Rina Sebastiane, and Von Lycaon. They are currently at various stages of development.

The Zenless Zone Zero Ellen Joe figure is in development, and there's no release window for it yet. The game is on the PS5, Xbox Series X, PC, and mobile devices.

The Gust JRPG's cosmetics will be in Tekken 8 starting on July 8, 2025. The fighting game outfit and quest will be in the JRPG once July 23, 2025 arrives.

The Atelier Yumia crossover with Tekken 8 seems a bit more involved. The portion of the Tekken Summer Updatesshows the start of a side quest that has Viktor sending Yumia to a certain place for a challenge. He also mentioned she should wear the outfit provided. The outfit is the Tekken Collab Costume that makes Yumia look like Reina. That mission involves facing a Heihachi Puni.

Honkai: Star Rail Video Teases Fate Collab Details

HoYoVerse shared a live-action video for the Honkai: Star Rail collab with the Fate series, and it helps explain the concept of the Holy Grail War while also joking about how the company prepared and presented "ideas" for it. A part of that involved mentioning members of Type-Moon, such as Kinoko Nasu and Takashi Takeuchi, took part in the Fate/stay Night [Unlimited Blade Works] creation. This is interspersed with teases of event scenes showing Archer, Lancer, and Saber.

The more serious elements of the video started at about the 5:20 minute mark. That's when we saw an event scene of Saber attacking Lancer, then Saber and Archer fighting. Images of the Archer and Saber Light Cones came up too. Around the 5:40 mark, Takashi Takeuchi's contributions came up. He was called upon for the key art for the Honkai: Star Rail Fate collab, as well as to create the art for Archer and Saber for "the most faithful, most iconic character designs." HoYoVerse also noted, "And to top it all off, we consulted [Kinoko Nasu] himself for his personal feedback."

Here's the full "Honkai: Star Rail Kicks Off a Holy Grail War" video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lu3iYJAarUc

As a reminder, we will need to pay for Saber in Honkai: Star Rail. Archer will also be available on a paid banner, but we all also get him for free when the event starts. Both will be five-star units.

Honkai: Star Rail is available for the PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and the Fate collab starts on July 11, 2025, then ends just before the launch of 3.7.

a criminal in BitLife

BitLife challenges are full of strange situations where you'll meet new people, try out different jobs, or become famous. Sometimes, you'll even commit crimes within the game, with police right there to arrest your character.

Fortunately for our characters, it's possible to escape from the police when this happens, allowing them to get away with the crime, move on with their lives, and even progress through a few challenges. Here are some tips for running away from the cops in BitLife.

How to run from the police in BitLife

For the most part, running away from the cops in BitLife is a matter of luck. However, you can influence this by having high karma and athleticism. Starting your playthrough with the Crime special talent can also help your chances.

Karma is a hidden trait in BitLife that changes depending on your character's actions. If they're a good person that avoids trouble, their karma will be high. Similarly, troublemakers who frequently commit crimes will have low karma. You can also artificially influence it if you have God Mode.

BitLife karma stat
Screenshot by Destructoid

You can also assign your character the Crime special talent if you own the Mafia pack. That way, they'll have an advantage in any crime-related activities, including the acts themselves and running away if things go south.

Lastly, increasing your health and athleticism will help you run away. You can raise both by heading to the gym, going for walks, and curing any illnesses you develop over time. As long as your health is high, you'll have a slight bump to your odds.

No matter what, you're not guaranteed to succeed, but these tips will improve your chances slightly.

Once you're ready to run from the cops, have your character commit any crime. If you're specifically trying to get caught, go for options like Bank Robbery or Grand Theft Auto. If you "fail," the police will find your character and arrest you.

encounter the police in BitLife
Screenshot by Destructoid

Upon encountering the police, you'll find options to brine, cooperate, or run away from them. Choose to run away to attempt the escape. If you succeed, you'll get away without facing any immediate consequences. Otherwise, they'll catch and send your character to jail.

Running away from cops in BitLife

Although you won't face any consequences immediately, there's a good chance the police will find your character a few years later. You can either deal with the second arrest when it appears, try to run away again, or emigrate to another country. Emigrating will usually guarantee that you get away with it for the rest of your character's life.

The starting of a game in College Football 26

College Football 26 has over 100 schools, and some of them have pretty poorly-rated squads in this year's release.

Schools in the game are rated based on their squad strengths. To make matters simpler, the game uses a star-based rating system that factors in their offence and defence. This guide will give you a highlight of the lowest-rated schools in the current database.

Lowest-rated schools in College Football 26

There are different reasons why a school's rating is poor. It's primarily due to a combination of poor offense and defense. Rarely, some teams strong in one area and very weak in the other. In the table below, I have included all the teams that are rated between zero and one-star squads.

Team name Star Rating OVR OFF DEF
Akron Zips 0.5 61 61 61
Golden Flashes 0.5 64 64 64
Arkansas State Red Wolves 1 69 69 69
Ball State Cardinals 1 62 64 61
Buffalo Bulls 1 69 69 71
Delaware Blue Hens 1 67 69 66
Fiu Panthers 1 69 69 69
Georgia State Panthers 1 65 66 64
Jax State Gamecocks 1 67 69 66
Kennesaw St. Owls 1 66 66 66
Missouri State Bears 1 65 66 64
Mew Mexico Lobos 1 67 69 66
Old Dominion Monarchs 1 64 64 64

Akron Zips is this year's worst-rated team, and with some distinction. Its OVR, OFF, and DEF ratings are all limited to 61, which is the lowest. Its squad is rated at a mere half star, along with Golden Flashes. Both teams are among the weakest of all in terms of pure ratings.

Akron Zips in College Football 26
Screenshot by Destructoid

If you're someone who loves a true challenge in College Football 26's Dynasty Mode, you can pick any team mentioned on the table above. These schools have among the weakest programs, and you'll have to work extra hard. However, it will be nothing short of a miracle if you can transform them into a Championship-winning side.

Speed is one of the most important attributes for the QBs. While having a good throwing arm and awareness is key, being fast and agile is also extremely important. That additional speed can often become the difference between a successful pass and being tackled down.

This guide will highlight the ten fastest QBs you can access inside the game.

10 quickest QBs in College Football 26

To differentiate between the athletes in College Football 26, I have opted for the Speed attribute (referred to in-game by SPD). This is the main attribute that determines the speed of a star, irrespective of their position on the field.

I have also included the Agility stat since that's also pretty valuable for a QB.

Name OVR SPD AGI
Austin Carlisle 73 91 89
Haynes King 86 91 89
Hauss Hejny 73 91 86
Taylen Green 86 91 88
Ju'Juan Johnson 74 91 88
Nate Johnson 73 91 90
Chris Denson 76 90 91
Mike Wright 78 90 88
Kaidon Salter 88 90 91
Marcel Read 85 90 90

Honorable Mentions: Tommy Castellanos (90 SPD, 83 OVR), Michael Hawkins Jr. (90 SPD, 80 OVR), Luke Moga (90 SPD, 71 OVR)

This year's list is definitely more varied with rookie talents as far as pure speed is concerned. While there are six 91-SPD rated stars, Taylen Green and Haynes King have the best set of attributes. Not only are they fast, but they have well-rounded stats, allowing them to shine better on the field.

In terms of overall, Kaidon Salter has the highest rating. He was among the fastest QBs in College Football 25, and it's no different in College Football 26 as well. His Agility rating, at 91, is slightly higher than his speed, allowing him to twist and turn quite flawlessly.

There's another name in the 80-ratings club: Marcel Read. Read has SPD and AGI ratings of 90 apiece, making him quite potent as a QB.

Peak Cure-all bottle

If you've played at least a few PEAK runs, you'll know the feeling of accidentally running out of stamina and breaking your character's legs, trying new food and being burned alive from it, or getting stuck in the middle of a blizzard and slowly freezing to death.

While PEAK offers multiple ways to deal with these ailments, Cure-All is a fantastic last resort if you or one of your teammates is close to death and needs some extra health. Let's break down how to find Cure-All and its uses in PEAK.

How to find Cure-All in PEAK

Cure-All is a Mystical item that has a very low chance of appearing in luggage bags. You can also get them from Ancient Statues at the end of levels. However, claiming it as a statue reward requires surviving as a solo player or having all of your teammates survive if you're in a group.

Peak Cure-all in Ancient Statue
Screenshot by Destructoid

Your first option is to check any Explorer or Ancient Luggage bags you encounter. The Explorer's luggage bag is a rare, bright orange version that has a chance to spawn a Mystical item alongside regular resources. Ancient Luggage is the rarest of the four types and inflicts damage upon opening it, but guarantees you'll find a Mystical Item. If you're lucky, this'll be a Cure-All potion.

Alternatively, if you and your teammates all survive your trek to the top of a level's mountain, you'll encounter an Ancient Statue to break. Normally, this revives fallen teammates. If everyone's alive, you'll instead find a random Mystical item, with Cure-All being one of the potential options.

Below is every Mystical item that can spawn in Ancient luggage or at the Ancient Statue:

  • Cure-All
  • Anti-Rope
  • Anti-Rope Cannon
  • Bugle of Friendship
  • Cursed Skull
  • Faerie Lantern
  • Pandora's Lunchbox
  • Pirate's Compass
  • Scoutmaster Bugle
  • Scout Effigy

In short, even if you're lucky enough to make it to the top, you'll also need some extra luck to find the Cure-All.

What does Cure-All do in PEAK?

Cure-All is an all-in-one healing potion that removes negative status effects. It has three charges, giving you several opportunities to cure any injuries, poison, hunger, and other adverse effects on your character. You can also use it on teammates if they're close to dying and need some help.

However, it won't bring you to 100 percent if you're, say, starving or heavily afflicted with one specific effect. Instead, it's best when you have multiple factors affecting you at once, such as hunger combined with freezing, fatigue, and poison. Otherwise, you may be able to clear half of an effect but still have some leftover that you'll need to tackle with items like bandages, antidotes, or first-aid kits. Nonetheless, Cure-All is still a fantastic item to have during emergencies, especially with it having up to three uses before depleting.

Fantastic Four First Steps Marvel Snap season

Marvel Snap's July 2025 season debuts tomorrow, and it will feature none other than the Fantastic Four. Wait, what?

All four of the heroes from Marvel's First Family are already in the game, but this season's tie-in to the upcoming movie The Fantastic Four: First Steps will introduce variants of the same heroes, inspired by their movie designs, and will all have new abilities, too.

https://twitter.com/MARVELSNAP/status/1942283501925196123

This season's battle pass card is "Mister Fantastic: Fantastic 4 First Steps," and he sports the likeness of actor Pedro Pascal who will play the hero in the movie that comes out on July 25, making this season unique in that it introduces new versions of existing heroes in the game, but is also directly inspired by the movie. This has happened before in Marvel Snap with seasons being themed around a current MCU offering, but never to this extent.

The new card's ability, "End of Turn: Give a card in your hand -1 Cost or +2 Power," is different from the original Mister Fantastic in the game, as are his power and cost levels. Most of the new cards this season all have the "End of Turn" text, marking a new archetype that the game has been building on of late, similar to others like On Reveal, Ongoing, or Activate cards.

The other cards this season, all themed around the movie, include:

  • H.E.R.B.I.E.

    • Two cost, three power.
    • "Each turn this is in play, swap to a new Activate ability until one is used."

  • Human Torch: Fantastic 4 First Steps

    • Three cost, two power.
    • "End of Turn: +1 Power. Once per game, if your side here is full, double this card's Power instead."

  • The Thing: Fantastic 4 First Steps

    • Five cost, six power.
    • "End of Turn: +2 Power. Once per game, if your side here is full, destroy an enemy card here with less Power."

  • Invisible Woman: Fantastic 4 First Steps

    • Three cost, five power.
    • "Activate: This turn, your End of Turn abilities happen twice."

Additional cards include Fantasticar, Mole Man, and Mad Thinker, but the season also introduces a new limited-time mode called Grand Arena, which sounds quite similar to Hearthstone. In it, you choose a "Champion" (like a Hearthstone hero) and a distinct card ability to go along with it.

The hopes are that Grand Arena will be a bit more fair to the consumer than last month's Sanctum Showdown, which players blasted and began review bombing the game on Steam for.

The new season begins tomorrow, July 8, and the movie launches in theaters on July 25.

Daiwa Scarlet, Vodka, and Ines Fujin perform in Umamusume: Pretty Derby.

Now a worldwide phenomenon, the global version of Umamusume Pretty Derby hit the ground running by allowing players to join their favorite racers as they fight to fulfill their dreams.

But although easy to dive into, the game's unusual pity system might make you waste precious resources if you're not careful. To help you avoid that and make sure you will have enough for either your favorite or an upcoming meta pick, here's everything you need to know about the Umamusume Pretty Derby Pity System.

Umamusume Pretty Derby Pity System, Explained

Unlike most mainstream gacha games, like Genshin Impact and Wuthering Waves, Umamusume Pretty Derby does not have a rate-based pity system, which means that you won't find 50/50s or guaranteed pulls here. Instead, each pull on a designated Spotlight banner will reward you with 1x Exchange Point. Upon reaching 200, you can then exchange them for the banner's Spotlight Featured Umamusume or SSR Card, both of which also have a 0.75% chance of being acquired per pull.

The Spotlight Scout Banner in Umamusume Pretty Derby.

Be careful, though, as pulls are not shared between banners, and all Exchange Points acquired during a run are converted to Clovers at the end, which can be exchanged for items such as Umamusume and Card Scout Tickets at the Clover Shop. Speaking of banners, they also seem to be extremely short, with lifespans of around seven days. So make sure to save your Carats, as you will need to expend a total of 30K to get the points needed to claim a featured 3-Star or SSR Card.

All banner rates in Umamusume Pretty Derby

Except for the 10-pull only Head Start Scout banners—which reward you with a guaranteed 3-star Umamusume and a SSR Support Card, respectively—all of the Spotlight banners in Umamusume Pretty Derby share similar individual rates. In both of them, each 10-pull will also reward you with a guaranteed 2-star/SR or above find. Here are the individual rates for all Spotlight banners:

  • Spotlight Pretty Derby Scout (Featured Umamusume Banner)

    • Featured 3-star: 0.75% per pull
    • Any 3-star (including previously released limited ones): 3% per pull
    • Any 2-star: 18% (97% per tenth pull)
    • Any 1-star: 79%

  • Spotlight Support Card Scout (Featured Support Card Banner)

    • Featured SSR: 0.75% per pull
    • Featured SR: 2.5% (12% per tenth pull)
    • Featured R: 2.5%
    • Any SSR: 3%
    • Any SR: 18% (97% per tenth pull)
    • Any R: 79%

Now that you know how to get your oshi, we also highly recommend that you check out the latest Umamusume codes for a chance of getting some free Carats.

Three characters walking through red water with a massive dinosaur looming over them in jurassic world rebirth next to a boy riding a black dragon in how to train your dragon

Hey there, Destructoid, and welcome to the first edition of our new Weekly Watchlist column, a series where we'll discuss what we watched this week and hear about what you've been enjoying, too.

This week, we're delving into two different worlds of fantastical beings and taking a look at Jurassic World Rebirth and the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon. The former fell pretty flat for me, while the latter was a happy surprise.

A man wearing glasses with brown hair next to a blonde woman standing in tall grass in jurassic world rebirth

Jurassic World Rebirth was a decently fun time, but also kind of disappointing. I think I keep hoping these films will capture the magic of the old Jurassic Park movies again, but they never do. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't as good as I had hoped. It was also entirely carried by its three central stars, Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey.

My biggest issue was that it felt like the film was trying way too hard to be big and different rather than just embracing what makes this franchise special. Instead of leaning into the simple dinosaur concept, Jurassic World Rebirth focuses on transgenetic mutated dinosaurs, which look and feel more like monsters and aliens, especially the big bad one the end fight centers around.

It's also just become way too predictable. I knew from the first moment I was introduced to each character who would live and die, when things would go wrong, and what the ultimate outcome would be. The stakes just don't feel as high because of this. There are still some cool action scenes, especially around dinosaurs in water, but it was hard to feel truly immersed when the outcome always seemed obvious.

A bunch of long necked dinosaurs walking through grass in jurassic world rebirth
Image via Universal Pictures

The catalyst for a lot of the film is also absurdly stupid, and that might sound harsh until you realize a Snickers candy bar wrapper is responsible for the death of countless individuals. If your dinosaur containment and security system can be ruined by one candy wrapper getting stuck in a door frame, maybe you need to rethink the whole system. There are just a few too many really dumb decisions in this one, and although I'm not usually one to get caught up in the details, it was hard to ignore them here.

Overall, I enjoyed it, but I don't think it was some amazing cinematic masterpiece I'll be returning to watch frequently. If you go into it expecting a solid but not super groundbreaking time, I think you'll like it too. It was good but forgettable, which has been my experience with almost all of the Jurassic World films. They're good fun, but they've got nothing on the original Jurassic Park series, and I do wonder how many more times they can get away with trying to build upon the exact same premise.

The best thing I watched this week was the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon. The original animated version is one of my favorite movies of all time, so I wasn't initially stoked about it getting a live-action remake. It's a perfect film in my eyes, and I just didn't see how they could improve upon it.

The 2025 version really surprised me, though. It might be the most faithful adaptation I've ever seen, with many scenes looking identical to the original, but it also has a few new additions I genuinely enjoyed.

Getting to see more of the Vikings searching around for the dragons was the most obvious change, and it made the stakes feel a lot higher and also made Gerard Butler's Stoick easier to sympathize with. The other big change I picked up on was the added dynamic between Snotlout and his father, which made his actions and generally bad behavior a lot more understandable. All of the changes were small, but they added positive elements to the film.

As much as I did love the live-action remake, I'll always be a believer that it didn't need to exist. Animation is a perfectly valid art form anyone of any age can and should enjoy, and instances like this one feel a bit diminishing to the original content. I love that the remake is almost a one-to-one copy, but then my question is, why did it need to exist in the first place?

Later this week, I'm really looking forward to finally seeing Superman. It's one of my most anticipated films of the whole year, and I've already got my tickets for Thursday night ready to go. I'm sure I'll have a lot to say about that next week, so stay tuned for more.

So, what have you been watching lately, Destructoid? Got any good recommendations? And have you had a chance to check out either of these films yet, or do you plan to? Let us know down in the comments.

CFB 26 cover art

If your uniform is trash, your wins in EA Sports College Football 26 don't mean much.

You have to look good before you can play well on the field. And that means picking the best uniform for your squad to suit up with when it comes to taking the gridiron on Saturdays in the fall and winter each year.

In CFB 26, of the dozens of playable schools to choose from, some play it safe with their jerseys and pants, while others really get wild. We've compiled a list of the 10 best unis in the game to pick from, including some classics and some dope redesigns.

10 best uniforms in College Football 26

Notre Dame Fighting Irish - Shamrock Alternate

When the Golden Domers put the emphasis on Golden, they never look better. This blue on blue with gold helmet and foil gold numbers and lettering is just breathtaking.

University of North Carolina Tar Heels - Away Throwback

There may not be a better color combo in the world than UNC's baby blue and white, but it being accented with a darker blue on the shoulders and lining the pants and numbers really makes this whole thing pop.

Northern Illinois University Huskies - Alternate

NIU Huskies uniform CFB 26

Black and red may be the meanest colorway there is, and there are plenty of uniforms in CFB 26 that sport it. But I think this one is my favorite due to its simplicity.

Georgia State Panthers - Alternate

Okay, maybe I lied. Black and blue goes really hard, too. And the George State Panthers swapping out their university name for "ATLANTA" in bold lettering on the front of the jersey really brings it all together.

Oregon Ducks - Home Fly Era

Option two of Oregon's Home Fly Era is just gorgeous. Green and black with gray lettering and accents? It's too clean.

Syracuse Orange - Home

Blue and orange is very hit or miss when it comes to sports uniforms. I think this may be the biggest hit I've seen. Orange helmet, blue jersey, orange pants with accents throughout makes this the full package.

Penn State Nittany Lions - Home

You could never make me hate this classic midnight blue and white combination. It is simple and plain as it is iconic, and nothing will ever change its greatness.

San Diego State Aztecs - Home

Back on the black and red train, but this time, it's all about the helmet. The details on SD State's helmet are gorgeous, full of all sorts of Aztec designs and writing.

University of Alabama at Birmingham Blazers - Alternate

UAB's alternate jersey brings out the highlighter green numbers and lettering for a really unique spin on the school's normal colorway.

West Point's football team swaps in some digital camo for one of the cooler alternate designs in the entire game.

The starting of a game in College Football 26

The Team Builder website is live and running in College Football 26, and it can help you build and use fantasy creations.

If you're unsatisfied with the official teams, you can shift to interesting creations from the community and use them across different game modes. Alternatively, you can create a team of your own using the website. This guide will highlight all the required steps, making it easy for you to complete your creation.

How to create your school with College Football 26 Team Builder

Just like last year, custom College Football 26 custom teams can only be built on an external website. You can do so with the help of this link, which will introduce you to the world of community creations. Here's how you can complete the creation of your school.

Team Builder Website for College Football 26
Screenshot by Destructoid via EA Sports

  • Click on Create on the main page.
  • The first task includes choosing your preferred apparel brand. This includes creating your primary, secondary, and tertiary logos. You can choose between three options - Adidas, Nike, and Under Armour.
  • Once done, you can create your jerseys. Your custom creation has limited presets, divided into helmets, jerseys, pants, and socks.
  • You can even customize the minute details of your kit, adding colors, patterns, and custom logos. Your helmet, for example, can display up to seven custom logos.
  • Every brand has some patented patterns that will reflect on the jerseys of your school.
  • Creating your secondary kits (or more) is pretty easy if you want to maintain the same design. You can use the duplicate function to transfer the same design across home and away kits while changing only the color patterns.
  • Now, you get to build your stadium. There are eight different components of your home field that you can customize.
  • You have to pick one of the original stadiums already in the game and then customize the components to suit your tastes. Alternatively, there are three generic options you can customize to design your home field.
  • Once your stadium is set, you can add the athletes who will play in your squad. In addition to the players, you can choose from generic roster types and customize your playbooks.
  • After you complete all the steps mentioned above, press the submit button. A preview screen will appear where you can review all your creations before confirming your team creation.

You'll now need to start College Football 26 and go to the Download Center from the main menu. You'll find the complete list of fantasy creations made by you and other members in the community. Select a squad and download it, which will then allow you to import the custom squad to various game modes.

Team getting ready for the start of a game in College Football 26

College Football 26 has plenty of different ways to celebrate after securing a touchdown, with a host of available choices inspired by real life.

You can recreate plenty of signature celebrations on the virtual field with the help of a few basic controls. Most of the celebrations, like last year, require either the press of a single button or a combination of two. This guide will provide you with all the info you need to recreate the celebrations.

Complete list of College Football 25 celebrations

The full list of celebrations available in College Football 26 can be broken down into three main groups:

  • 20 Touchdown celebrations
  • 4 First Down celebrations
  • 4 Interception celebrations

While some of the favorites from College Football 25 have retained their places, there are plenty of new touchdown celebrations as well.

Hat ceremony in College Football 26

College Football 26 is now out on advanced access for EA Play trial members and Digital Deluxe owners, and our first task is to understand the difficulty modes available to us.

To have fun, you'll want to play at a difficulty level that matches your expectations and skill levels. If you choose a level that's too difficult, you're going to lose plenty of games. Similarly, selecting an easy level will make the game feel bland, and you'll be missing out on potential rewards. To get your selection right, this guide will help you understand what each difficulty type means.

How many College Football 26 difficulty settings are there?

Just like last year, we have four difficulty settings available for you to choose from.

  • Freshman
  • Varsity
  • All-American
  • Heisman

With Freshman being the easiest and Heisman being the hardest challenge, let's take a look at what each difficulty offers.

Freshman

This is the perfect setting for you if you have never dipped your foot into either College Football 25 or the Madden series. At this difficulty, the AI will barely offer any challenge, allowing you to make mistakes and learn from them. This mode should only be picked by beginners, as veterans will be bored with how basic the AI is at this difficulty.

Varsity

While the AI is no longer a sitting duck, the gameplay is still pretty easy to manage on most occasions. If you're a beginner with some basic knowledge about football, Varsity is a great starting point. You will feel that bit of challenge while the general gameplay is still pretty relaxing and allows you to learn and master the basics.

All-American

This is an excellent level for those who played College Football 25 pretty religiously, but don't want to work too hard every game. The AI is pretty challenging to defeat unless you're a Madden veteran. You'll typically get great rewards from most modes at this difficulty level, and improve yourself to take on the ultimate challenge in the Heisman tier.

Heisman

This is 'the' difficulty level if you want a real test. The AI in the Heisman difficulty feels almost unbeatable (there were claims last year that the AI might be cheating), and you will see some exceptional plays across the games. This difficulty mode is purely meant for those who never shy away from a challenge, and have outstanding football skills.

How to change difficulty in Football 26?

It's pretty easy to change the difficulty if you feel that things aren't up to your expectations.

  • From the main menu, go to "Settings."
  • Choose "Game Options"
  • Scroll down, and you'll find "Skill Level."
  • Make your choice, and you're done.

Death Stranding 2 Sam running

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach's "walking simulator" accusations are highly exaggerated, but there are some long trips that you have to make as a delivery guy in the game.

A feature like fast travel would easily mitigate this sort of problem, but the game certainly wishes for you to make these trips on foot or in one of your vehicles as part of its core gameplay loop. Sometimes, though, you're running out of time in real life and need to make some deliveries quicker than normal.

Here's everything there is to know about fast travel in Death Stranding 2.

Can you fast travel in Death Stranding 2?

Sam looking at the DHV Magellan in Death Stranding 2
Screenshot by Destructoid

Yes, you can fast travel in Death Stranding 2 using the DHV Magellan, but only after a certain point in the story. There are also points in the story where the DHV Magellan will not be able to travel until you have completed certain tasks.

How to unlock fast travel in Death Stranding 2

You can begin to use fast travel in Death Stranding 2 after you've completed the story mission Main Order 12: Investigate the Unusual Tar Currents near F1. This order consists of a boss fight with a giant mech.

How to fast travel in Death Stranding 2

Screenshot by Destructoid

To use the DHV Magellan's fast travel, open up the Ring Terminal menu by pressing the Options button on the PS5 controller, then hold down the X button. This will bring you to the Chart Course menu, where you can select from multiple areas you have already been to and fast travel to those destinations.

This is incredibly handy for completing certain deliveries quickly, although you will receive fewer likes if you deliver cargo using the DHV Magellan as opposed to walking or driving there.

Make sure you are onboard the DHV Magellan before using the Chart Course menu, otherwise the ship will travel without you. Load up your cargo onto the ship or onto a vehicle on the ship, and then use the fast travel function to move quickly around the map.

DS2 Chart Course menu screen
Screenshot by Destructoid

Another method of fast travel in DS2 is using a buildable structure called a Transponder, which also unlocks as part of the story. A Transponder can be found at many of the named locations in the game, but you can also build one yourself, and it allows you to teleport to other ones on the map.

The main issue here, though, is that you cannot bring any cargo with you (other than what's in your pouches and tool rack) when using a Transponder, making it relatively useless for making deliveries. It is indeed another way to "fast travel," though, so use it should the need arise.

Sam on the beach in Death Stranding 2

It took me around 35 hours to finish Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, but its most memorable moments come towards the end of Hideo Kojima's "strand" epic. I need to talk about it.

Spoilers will follow, obviously, so if you haven't finished Death Stranding 2 yet or don't want to know what happens, then steer clear and come back once you're ready. I promise you, it's something you want to experience for yourself if you can manage it.

Death Stranding 2 Sam Tar wall
Screenshot by Destructoid

Like the original game, after the dozens of hours of "walking simulator" gameplay, everything gets paid off in a big way towards the end. Once Sam (the player) has successfully connected all of Australia into the Chiral Network, the game's climax is triggered by Higgs kidnapping Tomorrow and explaining that she is none other than Sam's daughter somehow.

Tomorrow actually being "Lou" was telegraphed pretty hard in this game, even more so than the revelation that Cliff was actually Sam's dad and Sam was his "BB" all along. But that didn't make the twist any less cool, in my eyes.

The real fun then begins as Sam and the DHV Magellan crew track Higgs to his Beach where, in true Kojima fashion, everything escalates into an epic action scene, of which the game has a very memorable handful. Sam leaves the ship to track down Higgs, while in the background, we bear witness to an utterly spectacular battle featuring kaiju-like giant B.T.'s, one of which is hijacked by the DHV Magellan as the vessel replaces one of its heads. It's just ridiculous, but so damn cool.

Sam makes his way down the beach, fighting B.T.'s and ghost mechs along the way, and is again saved by a mysterious red samurai from earlier in the game. This is no "the Cyborg Ninja is Gray Fox" moment, but it definitely evokes similar memories, as it's revealed that the badass is none other than the deceased Deadman, controlling the ghost mech from beyond. Outrageous and amazing.

Eventually, Sam finds Higgs on the beach, and this is where Troy Baker delivers one of his best performances, and that's saying quite a lot for an actor with his repertoire. Here, Higgs reveals that he has been stuck on the beach for "tens of thousands of years," hence his unquenchable thirst for revenge on Sam and Fragile.

It's a gorgeous performance, delivered wonderfully by Baker as Higgs pours his heart out to Sam before the two kick off a multi-phase boss battle featuring classic Kojima health bars and...guitars. Yeah, the musical instrument that doubles as both an axe and a gun of sorts becomes the focal point of the duel.

Sam and Higgs shoot at each other, hack away at each other with the axe-like weapon, and then lose their shirts and absolutely shred the instrument like they're on stage at Coachella, or in a Scott Pilgrim movie. It's just plain silly, but it is pure Kojima through and through. And there's no real explanation for any of it, because there just doesn't have to be.

As the two fight, we see Tomorrow in the background, revealed as another Extinction Entity that Higgs utilizes to bring about the Last Stranding and put an end to humanity for good. It seems like everything is about to come to an end, until the sky gives birth to a giant version of Lou, the baby. Of course.

The giant baby coos as Higgs plays a cover of "BB's Theme," the heartbreaking song from the original game, and a lullaby that Cliff used to sing to Sam as a baby. It's a recurring song throughout the series, and one that I have trouble listening to without crying myself, for my own personal reasons.

And then the skyscraper-sized baby plucks Higgs from the beach, sticks him in her mouth like a Cryptobiote, crunches him like a snack, and then spits out the villain's gold mask to signify his final end. It's hilarious, twisted, weird, and poetic all at the same time.

We're then seemingly transported to the very beginning of the game, where Sam and Lou are returning from a delivery, and "BB's Theme" plays yet again. Once Sam returns home, he's brought back to the current moment where he finds Tomorrow's body, whom he brings back to the DHV Magellan. And then comes the typical Kojima grand exposition.

It's about 40 minutes of uninterrupted cutscenes to close out the main storyline of the game. This is a lot for many. But for me, and many Kojima fans like me, it's something we've become accustomed to. It's the cherry on top of a game journey, a reward for everything we went through in the game. Is it perfect? No. Is it nonsensical? Absolutely, but the performances given by the actors in these final scenes are wonderful.

During the ending, Sam finds out that Fragile has been "dead" for quite some time, as she did not survive earlier events in the game, but her living body endured. We then get the full reveal that Neil Vana, an antagonist in the game's events, was actually a hero who saved and protected Lou (Tomorrow) after she got stuck in the in-between world of the dead, where she grew up before being rescued by Sam earlier in the game.

There's more to it than I could properly describe here, including the full explanation of how Tomorrow is Lou, but I found the ending incredibly satisfying. It all feels like Kojima at his best: ridiculous, hilarious, and silly, yet poignant, beautiful, heartfelt, and soulful all at the same time. I'm thankful that we still get to experience Kojima's unique mind through games like this, and I continue to look forward to what's next.

If you want to relive the ending, check it out on YouTube in 4K thanks to YouTuber Shirrako. I've watched it a couple times since finishing the game four days ago, and I can't get enough.
