Apex Legends is back. Steam's fifth most-played game never really went away, but the hit battle royale just teased Season 26, Showdown. It's around this time of year when hype starts building, player counts start rising, and ranked matches get an influx of rusty casuals to boost you to your season best placement. It's me, I'm the rusty casuals. While it seems unlikely that we'll get another new Legend in Season 26 so soon after Sparrow's Legolas-esque release last season, developer Respawn has still left us plenty of tantalising teasers to terrify our trigger-fingers in preparation for what will go down next month.

The latest Wuchang Fallen Feathers patch 1.4 appears to be secretly lowering the game's render resolution to boost frame rate, instead of fixing the root cause of its post-launch performance issues. Resolution upscaling is a well-established technique for boosting frame rates but this is the first time we've encountered a developer seemingly hiding that it's using the technique, and relying on it to provide a post-launch performance increase.

As our Wuchang Fallen Feathers system requirements guide shows, we were already concerned by the game's somewhat vague use of upscaling. The fact Wuchang Fallen Feathers isn't optimized come its release date isn't a surprise in 2025 – plenty of games get post-launch patches to make them run better. However, misleading gamers about how the game runs is a whole different matter. Even if you've got a PC with one of our best graphics card recommendations installed, this won't be enough to get around this issue, either.

Fallout New Vegas is the definitive Fallout experience. The Mojave Wasteland's gritty yeehaw vibe is unmatched, while an Obsidian at the height of its powers has yet to be bested in terms of writing wizardry within the series. When is the Skate 4 release date? While we've seen plenty of early footage of Skate 4 already, EA's upcoming Skate revival is a rare case of a triple-A studio showing off very early in-development footage of a game. Though we've seen plenty of Skate 4, we can also clearly see it's not ready yet. It's already been over a decade since the last Skate game, so we can hold on a little longer.

The first Skate was among the most innovative skateboard games, from its analog control scheme and semi-open-world game structure to its more realistic, less edgy representation of the skating scene. The development team behind Skate 3 was disbanded after a bombardment on EA message boards with questions about the series and its potential return ever since. Now, the team is very open about the development process for Skate 4, so here's what we know so far.

Cool to see, though one vocal group of players are keen to see the developers delve back in and make some changes to matchmaking, having penned an open letter to the Steamy company outlining hopes for the revised system that melds the very old old one with the slightly less old one the game's had since 2016's Meet Your Match update.

Infinity Nikki 2.0 Will Add Elderwood Forest and Spira City

Infold Games announced some details about the 2.0 update for Infinity Nikki, confirming the two new regions added in it will be Elderwood Forest and Spira City. However, there will be quite a wait until it arrives. The 1.8 patch will launch on July 29, 2025, and patches 1.9, 1.10, and 1.11 will follow it. This means we might not see 2.0 until December 2025, which would mark the one-year anniversary of the 1.0 launch.

The Elderwood Forest and Spira City locations are two of the only definite gameplay elements and additions confirmed for Infinity Nikki 2.0. We also know there will be the ability to ride both a raft or a snail. Additional Ability Outfits will be introduced, but we don't know what their traits or skills will be. It is unknown if the main story quests will return then or sometime before it.

The rest of the update concerned things we can expect to see in each of the updates leading up to Infinity Nikki 2.0. Here's a list of some of the additions:

  • 1.8: Danqing Season will be available until September 2, 2025, and it will add Danqing Island and its Ink-Woven Tales event, a Danqing Craft Ability Outfit, and the five-star Clouded Loong and Forever Bond sets. A free four-star Lifetime Yin Yuan outfit will appear.
  • 1.9: Bibcoon's Chuckle Club quests will appear and we'll be able to set up our own Home spaces.
  • 1.10: No teasers appeared.
  • 1.11: Individual clothing piece dying will appear.

The Miraland Round Table did bring up some other coming additions. More "mix-and-match" pieces of clothing are in development. Alternate detail options will be added to past five-star outfits. Outfit grouping in the wardrobe will appear. Finally, cooking will be added after the Home feature launches. General bug fixes will also come up.

Infinity Nikki is available for the PS5, PC, and mobile devices.

New Umamusume Trainee Curren Chan and SSR Yukino Bijin Debut

Cygames released two new banners in Umamusume: Pretty Derby that permanently add the Trainee Curren Chan and Support Card SSR Yukino Bijin to the game. Each of these focus banners last until August 7, 2025. After they end, both the character and card join the general pool of possible picks.

Curren Chan is notable in Umamusume: Pretty Derby as she is the first new Sprint unit in the game. She also starts with her Dirt affinity at F, which might be a bit easier to boost. Her growth stats affect Power (20%) and Speed (10%), which means as a Pace Chaser it should be easier to build those two most-desired stats for her role. While her unique skill isn't terribly special, her Dazzling Disorientation and Adored by All special skills can make her a debuffer.

We saw her Tracen Academy trailer debut this weekend:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bTlUS_EbOw

She'll also be in a Legend Race in August 2025.

As for SSR Hometown Cheers: Yukino Bijin, this Umamusume: Pretty Derby Support Card isn't terribly helpful. It's a Wit card, which is fine, but isn't a role as in-demand as something like the Speed SSR Kitasan Black or Stamina SSR Super Creek. Its Career Event special skill No Stopping Me also isn't as helpful as some others.

Here are the infographics for both that Cygames shared:

While Cygames didn't share the August 2025 schedule for the game yet, we do know who is coming up. Narita Taishin will be the next Trainee, and the SSR Yaeno Muteki Power Support Card will show up.

Umamusume: Pretty Derby will is on the PC and mobile devices.

Sephiroth Dressed as Psaro for FFVII Ever Crisis Dragon Quest Event

A Dragon Quest Tact crossover event will come to FFVII Ever Crisis on July 30, 2025, and the two special character costume changes involve Sephiroth as Psaro and Red XIII as a Great Sabrecat. Aerith and Cloud will also get equipment and gear based on classic Dragon Quest characters via the gacha. The countdown login event has already been live in-game since July 23, 2025, and that offered a chance to get medals that can be redeemed for Special Draw Tickets for the upcoming gacha banners.

In the case of Sephiroth, he will cosplay as Psaro from Dragon Quest IV to star as the Banesword Sephiroth boss in the FFVII Ever Crisis Dragon Quest Tact event storyline. The idea is that the team visits the Gold Saucer, and this new storyline is part of a new event there Dio started. This means we probably won't actually be able to earn that costume for him anytime soon. However, the Great Sabrecat gear for Red XIII will be something we can earn by completing events tied to it.

As for the Cloud and Aerith outfits, they are more tied to general Dragon Quest vocations and roles. Cloud will get the recurring, legendary Erdrick's Armor gear and Erdrick's Sword weapon. Aerith will get an outfit based on the Dragon Quest III Sage via the Supreme Sage Garb gear and Supreme Sage's Staff weapon.

Here's how all of those look:

There's also a trailer showing all the Dragon Quest Tact crossover event items in FFVII Ever Crisis.

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is available for the PC and mobile devices. Dragon Quest Tact is no longer running outside Japan, but it is on mobile devices in Japan still.

Persona 5 Hatsune Miku Crossover Comes to Project Sekai

The 22nd Project Sekai Colorful Stage feat Hatsune Miku stream announced a Persona 5 Royal crossover event for the Japanese version of the game. Sega said that will begin on August 4, 2025. It will only last just over a week, as it will end on August 13, 2025. There is no release window yet for its appearance in Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage, the worldwide version of the mobile game.

Some of the event elements already came up in the showcase. Costumes will be available via the gacha. The men's costume will let people dress as Joker, while the ladies option is Violet's outfit. You can get the key art for the event, which features Miku dressed as Violet and Kaito dressed as Joker in front of a building with a screen showing the those two Phantom Thieves on it.

There will be some free elements too. During the login campaign, people can get a Morgana costume for their avatar to wear. It is also possible to earn a Leblanc Curry item. Getting stamps by completing certain quests can get you a decorative statue of Morgana and additional Leblanc Curry. The song "Life will Change" will appear in-game too, and it will be possible to hear Hatsune Miku, Kagamine Len, and Kagamine Rin sing it.

There's a full gallery of announcement images from Sega, which appeared on the Japanese social media account, and those highlights the costumes and decorations.

Here is the full 22nd Project Sekai showcase. The part that mentioned how Persona 5 Royal will appear in Project Sekai Colorful Stage feat Hatsune Miku came up at the 55 minute mark.

https://www.youtube.com/live/c8LwCpajE-U

Crossovers aren't uncommon in that Hatsune Miku rhythm game. Sanrio characters showed up in it. A Tamagotchi event will arrive in September 2025 too.

Project Sekai Colorful Stage feat Hatsune Miku is available on mobile devices, though outside Japan it is called Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage, and the Japanese Persona 5 Reload crossover event runs August 4-13, 2025.

Shonen Jump Pokemon crossover stars One Piece Monkey D Luffy and Pikachu

Shueisha and The Pokemon Company have revealed that they will hold a crossover between Pokemon and Shonen Jump manga titles like One Piece and Blue Box. This collaboration will result in a massive illustration set to appear in the Weekly Jump issue set to appear in Japan in early August 2025.

The mangaka artists behind the magazine's series are going to draw their titles' respective main characters paired with a Pokemon each. The companies have also revealed the first three titles involved ahead of the actual manga magazine's publication.

The first title to headline this major Pokemon crossover will be One Piece. Eiichiro Oda has drawn the title's protagonist Monkey D. Luffy together with a Pikachu.

https://twitter.com/Pokemon_cojp/status/1949484942750110111

The other two titles revealed simultaneously are Blue Box and Me & Roboco. Kouji Miura drew the Blue Box heroine Chinatsu Kano with a Totodile, while Shuhei Miyazaki has paired Roboco with a Mega Blaziken.

https://twitter.com/poke_times/status/1949484949389660529

The Shonen Jump editorial department has also published a full preview of the crossover on its social media account:

The Pokemon Company has been proactively holding crossovers between its franchise and many other major brands. Earlier in July 2025, the company had also revealed Pokemon collaborations with food outlet chains like McDonald's and Baskin-Robbins.

The full Shonen Jump - Pokemon crossover illustration will appear in the 36th-37th joint major issue of Weekly Shonen Jump, which Shueisha will publish in Japan on Monday, August 4, 2025.

Preview: Princess Maker: Children of Revelation Starts With a Solid Foundation

You have no idea how desperately I wanted a new Princess Maker game. I have loved the series since I played the second one ages ago. I got so excited when titles finally getting localized, even appearing on consoles like the Switch. The downside is, we sometimes get ports and localizations that aren't great. (I still wish the PC version of Princess Maker 5 on Steam was better.) D-Zard launched Princess Maker: Children of Revelation on Steam Early Access and, while there are some initial issues, it seems like it could be at least starting in a strong place.

Princess Maker: Children of Revelation takes some cues from past entries in the series, such as allowing someone to select their parental avatar's gender, bringing in Cube as the assistant and butler, and introducing RPG elements like seen in Princess Maker 2. We've been selected to raise a child and help her find her way in the world, and the major decisions begin once she turns 10. While the full game will involve raising her from 10 to 18, as in past installments, the current build only lets you get to about 14. The art direction is incredibly similar and based on past games, which also lends a sense of immediate familiarity.

The gameplay loop is very similar, and the elements feel like they capture what's important about the series. You determine her schedule each month, with this installment letting you pick what she does from the 1-10, 11-20, and 21-31, generally. Lessons include Alchemy, Art, Dance, Etiquette, History, Literature, Magic Studies, Martial Arts, Music, and Swordsmanship to start. She can also work part-time jobs to earn money for survival and schooling, with Botanical Garden, Housework, Infirmary, Ranch, Restaurant, and Woodworking Woodshop available at the outset. She can also recuperate if her stress is too high, taking one of those blocks of time in a month to relax at home, go outside with some spending money, or go on a paid vacation.

It's very similar to past games, right down to the progression once you set a schedule. When she's at a class or job, you see how well she performed. That affects stat gains and money earned. Once a phase is done, before plotting what's next, you can visit spots in town or send her to the royal family to try and get to know people in power. (This time, it involves going to see the Demon King's estate and retinue.) You can still talk to her and socialize, and customization elements are available in the form of clothes that can have an affect on characters.

What I did appreciate about the initial early access build of Princess Maker: Children of Revelation is how it prioritizes the daughter's relationships at a faster pace. By the start, I'd already started to see her meet characters who could turn into rivals, friends, or love interests. It made me feel like even though this is still early in development, there's an indication of world-building we sometimes didn't see in similar titles or other installments.

The downside is, Princess Maker: Children of Revelation is still early on. You can't go through a full run as a character, which is a letdown. Considering it is $34.99, that might be a big ask for someone. The game is expected to be released in the first half of 2026, and D-Zard noted it will release between two and three updates before then. Since there's no demo though, it's understandable if someone might get leery and want to wait until the next update launches or a sale appears.

However, after what I've played, I'm pretty hopeful about Princess Maker: Children of Revelation. The first few in-game years are fun. The gameplay loop is sound. I like the ambiance, and it feels like D-Zard understand what people who play the series love about it. It's just a matter of hoping it does stay on schedule and remain as solid as it seems so far.

Princess Maker: Children of Revelation is in early access for the PC via Steam and is expected to launch in 2026.

Supervive promo art featuring heroes from the game.

Supervive's relaunch has changed a few things from the older days, but the core gameplay revolves around using different Hunters to defeat your opponents.

Hunters have different roles, and it's crucial to pick one that suits your playstyle. However, certain Hunters, irrespective of their class, are better. They're either powerful in the current meta due to their kit or work well with most other roles.

Let's take a look at how the available Hunters rank in the current meta.

Complete Supervive tier list

Before diving deep into the tier list, let's first go through the different classes.

  • Frontliners: These are the tanks that have a bigger health pool and strong defensive abilities. Their job is to take hits and save their teammates.
  • Fighters: This role excels in direct combat and has the highest number of choices in the current build.
  • Initiators: This is a unique role that begins weak, but gradually scales up in the late and endgame.
  • Controllers: This role tries to force the enemy to come out of their favorite zones and shift their locations on the map.
  • Protectors: This role is the classic support that tries to buff and heal their allies.

To separate the characters, I have used four different tiers.

  • S-tier: These are the best characters in the current meta, in their respective roles. Some of them have complicated kits, but learning them will be worth your time.
  • A-tier: Decent characters who can jump to S-tier once you master their kits.
  • B-tier: Good characters, but they're limited in strength due to their kit.
  • C-tier: Characters that simply aren't good enough in the current meta.

P.S. Wukong and Hudson are yet to be assessed, and they will be placed soon on one of the below-mentioned tiers.

Oath in Supervive
Screenshot by Destructoid

S-tier

  • Oath: If you like playing tanks, Oath is the best choice. He can absorb an ungodly amount of damage without being killed, and his kit does, surprisingly, decent damage. He is also a perfect pick for solo queue, as his kit relies very little on team composition.
  • Ghost: Ghost is in S-tier purely due to his versatile nature. There are better damage dealers, but Ghost has plenty of different options available in his kit. He can dish out good numbers at range, but his close combat abilities are equally lethal.
  • Kingpin: If you're playing solo queue, there can't be many better choices than Kingpin. His burst damage makes him a solo nuker, and you won't have to rely on your allies to come in with the support.
  • Shiv: A new meta has still been unable to remove Shiv from the top, as her passive healing abilities make her a nightmare in sustained fights. Unless your opponent can dish out a huge combo, you're more than likely to jump in, win the fight, and escape with almost full health as Shiv.
  • Carbine: A more recent addition, this character is extremely powerful. She's a great counter to any character that likes to engage, and her all-around kit is perfect in the current meta.

A-tier

  • Myth: Decent character that can be S-tier in the right hands. She can do well if the opposite team lacks coordination (which happens quite frequently). You can be slightly passive or incredibly aggressive with her, and she does well either way.
  • Felix: While Felix is still more than decent in capable hands, he feels underpowered with the rise of Carbine in the meta.
  • Celeste: A Good character who relies heavily on her passive to control zones on the map.
  • Bishop: One of the best initiators in the meta, Bishop is pretty mobile while doing decent damage. She's also a really easy character to master, making her a good choice for beginners.
  • Brall: While he is incredibly hard to master, Brall is worth your time. He can be quite malleable in terms of in-game situations, which is a bonus. His kit is pretty potent, but it requires you to be mechanically accurate.
  • Zeph: A pretty good healer who can be an asset in a well-coordinated team. His kit allows him to dish out sustained heals at a consistent level.

B-tier

  • Joule: While his ultimate is pretty strong, other abilities aren't really potent in the current meta.
  • Void: Thanks to a few buffs, Void doesn't feel as powerless in the current meta. Unfortunately, he is one of the most complex characters to manage. He can be A-tier if you're really good at him, though.
  • Beebo: One of the easiest characters to learn the game with, as he doesn't get affected by terrain. Unfortunately, there's not much more to talk about.
  • Crysta: Has decent damage potential and mobility in her kit, but lacks overall effectiveness.
  • Saros: Another character with decent kit but abilities that are hard to master.
  • Shrike: While her kit is average, she's a good starting point for beginners.

C-tier

There's not much to say about these characters, as all of them have better replacements in their respective roles.

  • Jin
  • Elluna
  • Eva

BitLife plastic surgeon and psychic

During BitLife's Summer 2025 update, Candywriter introduced five new careers, including a plastic surgeon role for huge money-making potential. However, getting there isn't easy, especially if you're pursuing this job while completing a weekly challenge or achievements.

How to become a Plastic Surgeon in BitLife

Becoming a plastic surgeon in BitLife requires having a medical degree. After completing a science-related university degree and medical school, you have a chance to find a plastic surgeon role near the top of your full-time job list. It'll appear with a scissor emoji next to its name and a "Hospital" location tag.

BitLife plastic surgeon job
Screenshot by Destructoid

The first step to becoming a plastic surgeon is completing Medical School. As you age up your character, avoid committing crimes or dropping out of school. After graduating from secondary school, apply for university with a degree in biology or chemistry. If these options don't appear immediately, close and reopen BitLife, or age up and recheck the program list.

If your character's smarts stats aren't high enough to enter university, you can use the following strategies to increase them:

  • Watch documentaries by heading into Activities, Movie Theater, and Documentary.
  • Read books, particularly novels, autobiographies, and non-fiction text.
  • Complete the Memory Test through the Mind & Body menu.

Once your stats are high enough to enter university, finish the degree before applying to medical school. It's an expensive and lengthy venture, so apply for a scholarship or work a part-time job to pay for it. Otherwise, you'll be eligible to become a plastic surgeon once you complete this postgraduate degree.

Now that you have a medical degree, search your full-time job list for a plastic surgeon role. If you don't spot it right away, age up and recheck the job list or close and reopen BitLife. It may take a few tries depending on your luck, but most of your results should now be related to the medical field. Once you find the position, apply for it and pass the interview to become a plastic surgeon.

Although BitLife's version of the plastic surgeon job doesn't have any fame options, you can work hard to receive occasional raises. That way, an already high-paying job can net even more over time, making it easier to pay off your medical school loans if you have any. It'll also be much easier to swap over to another role if you want to become a brain surgeon, family physician, or another role within the medical field.

A hobbit with curly orange hair wearing a green skirt, beige top, and brown cloak standing in the woods in tales of the shire

I love a good cozy game, and throwing fantasy into the mix feels like the perfect recipe for success. Tales of the Shire, a hobbit-inspired adventure, has all the ingredients needed for greatness, but it doesn't quite make for a satisfying meal.

Tales of the Shire invites players into a cozy corner of Middle-earth that's far removed from the usual high-stakes present throughout The Lord of the Rings franchise. Instead of epic battles and deadly dark forces, your focus is cooking, gardening, community, and the quiet charm of hobbit life. Unfortunately, it only somewhat delivers on this promise as it ultimately struggles to balance charm with substance.

Chasing birds and butterflies through an enchanting, immersive environment

A hobbit with curly orange hair and a yellow skirt standing on a wooden bridge looking out at a forest scenery in tales of the shire
Screenshot by Destructoid

The world is easily the best part of this game. It's a vibrant, verdant, open world, with plenty to explore and uncover. There's a lot to love, but my favorite part is how immersive the exploration mechanics are.

Birds, butterflies, and skipping are the best examples of this. Birds act as your guide, flying whichever direction you need to go once you track a quest or mark a location on the map. Instead of distracting arrows or symbols, you get to follow cute little bluebirds that blend in with your surroundings, keeping you engaged with the picturesque natural landscape.

Similarly, butterflies pop up around the land to guide you to any nearby resources you may want to pick up. They're even color-coded to match what type of item you'll find if you follow them. And who needs running or jumping when you can skip your way to your destination? All these mechanics work together to make this cozy Shire world truly feel like home.

Mostly familiar mechanics with a few hobbit twists

Placing plants while gardening in tales of the shire
Screenshot by Destructoid

There are all the expected cozy gameplay features here, including gardening, foraging, fishing, decorating, and cooking. They're mostly par for the course, except for cooking and gardening, which have a delightful amount of depth to them.

Instead of just tossing ingredients together and moving on, you're encouraged to chop and simmer your dishes to add various textures and flavors. It's a bit challenging to master, but it's easily one of the best parts of the game and probably the best cooking system I've encountered in any cozy game.

In gardening, planting certain crops close together can result in better harvests, while others wither when placed close together. You have to be a bit strategic with your plant placements because of this, and it's a slightly tough but fun system to navigate. I wish other gameplay systems had the same amount of depth as these two, since they really shine.

Villagers who charm, but lack any real depth

A bunch of townsfolk gathered together in a group standing outside in tales of the shire
Screenshot by Destructoid

The townsfolk you meet around the Shire are integral to everything you do and form the focal points of the central storyline. But although they're delightful, they're also incredibly shallow. This is my biggest issue, as the one-dimensional characters take away from the incredible immersion elsewhere.

Outside of quests, occasional pop-up events, and meals, there's no way to chat with the villagers regularly. When you walk up to them, they'll ask if you need anything, and your only option is to say goodbye if you're not working on a quest that involves them. The only exception to this is characters who can trade or have items for sale, but there's no special dialogue or depth in these interactions, either.

The Shire revolves around relationships, so why does it feel like I know almost nothing about the 15 villagers who live there, and that most of the characters are the same? Outside of the townsfolk, there are lots of other NPCs wandering around, but you can't interact with them in any way, either.

A group of characters sitting around a table eating in tales of the shire
Screenshot by Destructoid

I can't get to know the characters better, give them gifts, hang out regularly, or otherwise build relationships with them, and this feels like such a massive oversight. Even sharing meals with villagers, which is the only way you really get to spend time with them, doesn't teach us anything new besides what types of food they like.

The missions townsfolk give you are tedious, as most of them are fetch quests that send you all around the map back and forth between the same characters with barely any intriguing dialogue to accompany them. These tasks are especially frustrating since there's no way to fast travel.

There's the foundation for greatness here, with an incredibly cute art style, gorgeous world, and compelling characters I genuinely want to know more about, but Tales of the Shire just doesn't deliver. If you're looking for a super relaxing and cozy experience, you'll have a fine time with this one, but don't expect a game that's going to stick with you.

A screenshot of Hollow Knight: Silksong in the green/lush biome.

Ahead of the Gamescom 2025 event, Xbox has announced that Hollow Knight: Silksong will be playable for the first time. A demo version of the game will be available to test out at the Xbox booth featured at this event.

Gamescom will run from Aug. 20 to 24 in Germany, with plenty of exciting announcements expected as the event unfolds. The first real look at Hollow Knight: Silksong, one of the most anticipated games left for release in 2025, is certainly a big one.

A screenshot of Hollow Knight: Silksong featuring a boss fight
Image via Team Cherry

The news that Hollow Knight: Silksong will be playable at Gamescom was unveiled in an official Xbox Wire news post. It's one of many games they're showing off this year, and it's easily one of the most exciting since we haven't seen much about it thus far, even though it was first announced over six years ago.

This announcement states, "This year, the Xbox booth will be full of fantastic upcoming games from Xbox and our incredible third-party partners coming to Xbox, PC, and Game Pass this Holiday and beyond – and yes, that includes Hollow Knight: Silksong."

The opportunity to go hands-on with this game is only available at the Xbox booth for attendees who visit it throughout the Gamescom event. You can experience this exciting new demo on two different platforms, including PC and ROG Xbox Ally X.

Since some lucky players will get to try Hollow Knight: Silksong at this event, it seems like there's a decent chance we might finally get a new trailer, too. The last trailer was released on June 12, 2022, so it's been over three years.

A screenshot of Hollow Knight: Silksong featuring the main characte riding a cart
Image via Team Cherry

Even if you can't be there to experience the game in person, it's possible you'll be able to catch a glimpse of it through the Xbox Gamescom Broadcast. It'll be live from the booth on Wednesday, Aug. 20, and Thursday, Aug. 21, to provide "first-look gameplay, developer interviews, new trailers, updates, and more."

An official release date for Hollow Knight: Silksong hasn't been set yet, but it's currently confirmed to release sometime before the end of 2025. I'm hopeful we might finally get a release date at Gamescom, perhaps alongside that new trailer I suspect might be released too, but it's not confirmed that we'll get either. Still, a fresh look at the game is a step in the right direction and certainly worth getting excited about.

Other demos confirmed by Xbox for Gamescom with this announcement include Borderlands 4, Onimusha: Way of The Sword, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, EA Sports FC 26, Aniimo, There Are No Ghosts at the Grand, PowerWash Simulator 2, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, Final Fantasy XVI, Invincible VS, Super Meat Boy 3D, Cronos: The New Dawn, and Mistfall Hunter. Xbox is also revealing Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and celebrating the World of Warcraft community with the new Midnight expansion during this event, so there's plenty to look forward to in addition to Hollow Knight: Silksong.

I didn't know what to expect from Cronos: The New Dawn when invited to a hands-on event by Bloober Team to try it out for the first time behind closed doors, but it became glaringly apparent as I sat down and played it for the first time that I was in for something special.

It's a survival horror game, and from the two hours of gameplay I got to experience, it felt like Bloober at its best. Telling an interesting story with expressive visuals, while offering those moments of terror and helplessness that very few games can replicate.

Initially, when playing the game for the first time, I was instantly hit with Resident Evil 2 remake vibes. From the way that character moves and shoots the gun, to the safe rooms you can find, to how you upgrade weapons and items by scavenging for parts. It gave off vibes of Capcom's remake outing, but it's more than that.

The game's biggest strengths lie in its environment, not only in its visual appearance, but also in how the game utilizes the environment to tell a story about what happened and craft puzzles for players to discover. You are rewarded with lore, items, and secrets by discovering every nook and cranny, and it's not only key to discovering what went on in this world, but to surviving it, too.

Like classic horror games of old, Cronos cements itself as survival horror, as resources are limited and you'll be finding yourself scouring every nook and cranny of the map in the hope of finding a single bullet that could be the difference between life and death. And while you can resort to melee attacks if you expand all your resources, it's useless, as melee does nothing and makes you more vulnerable. If you run out of ammo, you are deep. Simple as.

This creates a fear of inventory management where every bullet you use counts, and everyone you waste is even more heartbreaking. Sometimes you need to ask yourself if using the bullet is worth it, if there are things like gas canisters hidden in the environment you can use instead. It forces you to prepare ahead of time and rewards the paranoid who may have found that extra item that the speedrunner might have missed out on.

Don't get complacent either. At one point, I had around 30 pieces of ammo and plenty of health and was feeling great. That cockiness made me move through areas without checking everything, and I soon found myself scavenging for items after coming across an unexpected hoard.

What differentiates this game, though, from other games is two unique features—merging and adapting.

Enemies can merge with the bodies of their fallen comrades to gain new powers and become harder to kill. To counter this, you can burn the bodies of enemies or shoot them to stop them from merging before they become too painful to deal with, on top of your limited resources.

In one part of the game, we dropped into an area that was littered with dead bodies next to an exit. It was here that I understood the adapting part. Where a player might normally ruin to the exist, my instincts told me the moment i did that enemies were going to spawn behind me and merge with the bodies on the ground, so i painstankingly went through and burned every individual one and—loe and behond— when i did go to the door enemies did spawn, which made the painstaking work important to taking down easier to manage enemies then those that rush forward without thinking.

If I had any real critique of the game, it's that I wanted to try out more. After overcoming the boss, there was a teaser of a mechanic involving time travel that was quickly cut off. It feels like there are a lot more secrets hiding beneath the surface, and I can't wait to explore more when the game launches in Fall 2025.

The Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts teams from Marvel

Hey there, Destructoid, and welcome to another week. This time, we're taking a look at Marvel's two most recent movies, which are The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Thunderbolts*.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is quite new and was just released on July 25, while Thunderbolts* has been out for a bit after launching back on May 2. Both projects share a similar focus on teamwork and family, exhibiting plenty of heart and a promising future for the MCU.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps was one of my most anticipated films of the year, alongside Superman, and it far surpassed my extremely high expectations. This team has long been one of my favorites, and it's about time an adaptation finally did them justice.

I'm in absolute awe at how good the cast of this movie is. All four members of the team are beyond perfect and have already solidified themselves as some of my favorite MCU characters. Each character has plenty of standout moments, but it's easily Vanessa Kirby's Sue who steals the spotlight most for me.

The scene where she (spoiler warning) takes down Galactus by herself, fueled by primal rage and the need to save her son, is one I'll never forget and haven't been able to stop thinking about since I left the theater. She's truly a powerhouse, and not just because of her powers, but also the incredible care and heart she exhibits throughout the movie.

I'm also obsessed with the chase scene that happens early on when the Fantastic Four are fleeing from Galactus while Sue gives birth aboard the spaceship and the Silver Surfer chases them down. Obviously, there was no way any of them would die at this point, but the tension was so good that I was literally on the edge of my seat the entire time. This sequence, leading up to the black hole, is easily a top comic book movie moment for me.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps lives up to its name and is truly fantastic. I need these characters to be back for more as soon as possible, and I already want to see it again, even though I've already ventured to the cinema twice to see it. It's just that good.

Upon finishing The Fantastic Four: First Steps, I started thinking about Thunderbolts*, as both projects hit something I feel like the MCU has been missing—truly compelling team dynamics. The original Avengers just don't come anywhere close to how good these two teams are to me.

The Fantastic Four are literally a family, while the Thunderbolts are fully a found family. Both of these movies really leaned into the unique bonds and dynamics between the characters, keeping the story grounded by these relationships in a world that's otherwise plagued by chaos. I felt the same way about Superman, too, so superhero films in general have been doing a phenomenal job at this recently.

Thunderbolts* especially surprised me with its deeply compelling tackling of grief. All of the characters in this ragtag group have previously been considered villains and have a lot of trauma and issues to deal with because of it. In the end, they manage to work through it by supporting each other and reminding everyone that they're not alone. They literally save the world from Sentry/The Void/Bob by simply supporting him through his grief, and it's a really powerful and emotional moment that had me sobbing in the theater.

I care so much more about the members of the Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts than I ever did the original Avengers. I just feel like so many of those characters and the bonds between them didn't really get a chance to shine until it was too late, whereas all the members of these new teams already feel quite complex and fleshed out, even though they're just getting started.

So, Destructoid, what have you been watching this week? Have you had a chance to check out either of these family-centric Marvel movies yet, or do you plan to? Got any other watchlist suggestions for us? Let us know down in the comments so we can discuss.

A scene of development in The King is Watching

One of the key tips to win in The King is Watching is to manage your resources effectively, and there are a whole bunch you'll need to keep an eye on.

Of course, The King is Watching might not seem like an active resource-management title, but it's crucial to have a fair idea about which buildings are active and at what point in time. Having the correct resources will make things easier, and more so during hard events in the latter stages of the game.

How to get all resources in The King is Watching?

The King is Watching has 14 resources. Typically, these resources can be separated into two different groups: basic and advanced. Basic resources are those acquired from a building directly and don't have an input cost. These resources are produced automatically as long as you have constructed the designated building and keep it active.

Resource Uses Sources
Clay Used to recruit units and repair castles Clay Mine
Crystal Used to research spells and also recruit Arcane units Crystal Mine
Gold Construct different builds, unit recruitment, and upgrade the Gaze area Gold Mine, Market
Grapes Used to make wine and for the recruitment of Veteran-tier units Vineyard, Grape Bush
Ore Used for unit recruitments Iron Mine
Water Used for making buildings that provide other resources in turn All types of wells
Wheat Recruit units, upgrade the Gaze area, and make Flour All types of wheat fields
Wood Make advanced resources, upgrade units, and general construction Tree, Sawmill

Unlike basic resources, advanced ones aren't produced directly by your buildings. Instead, you'll have to procure them from the basic resources via refinement using Advanced Production buildings. As an alternative, you can gain them from traders or events, but those methods are largely luck-based.

Resource Uses Source of Production Recipe
Flour Sellable item at the market. Can be used at Enchanted Stump and Dragon Hatchery Mill 1 wheat
Furniture Can be sold for coins or Denarii Carpentry 3 Wood
1 Metal
Meat Used at Lion's Circus and Giant's Bedding Animal Farm
Fisherman's Hut
5 Water
Or
1 Water
1 Wheat
Metal Used in the construction of Elite and Veteran-tier Barracks. Can also be sold at the Market Forge 1 Ore
Oil Used to make Advanced Infrastructure buildings Fuel Pump 1 Water
1 Wood
Wine Boosts morale during combat Winery 2 Grapes

Typically, you'll want to focus more on the basic resources compared to the advanced ones. The basic resources are required far more on every run, while the advanced types are necessary in niche situations. Their needs will vary across different saves. Additionally, all playable King has certain powers, and there are resource costs.

Pokemon TCG Pocket Wisdom of Sea and Sky promo art

Wisdom of Sea and Sky, the next major expansion in Pokémon TCG Pocket, is all set to go live in the last week of July, and we don't have long to wait.

We already have a fair idea about the cards in the upcoming expansion, all thanks to the official trailer. It will be the first time since April this year that we have an expansion with two promo packs. Lugia and Ho-oh are the two creatures in focus, with their respective EX cards. But first things first - let's look at when the new packs will officially arrive.

Pokémon TCG Pocket Wisdom of Sea and Sky release countdown

The Pokémon TCG Pocket Wisdom of Sea and Sky expansion will be released worldwide on July 30, and the exact time of launch depends on your time zone. The developers are expected to follow the same schedule, and the following countdown is based on it. While the expansion goes live on July 30, certain players in the US will get it a day early on July 29.

[hurrytimer id="1096608"]

  • 10pm PT(July 29)
  • 12am CT
  • 1am ET
  • 6am GMT
  • 4pm AEST

Once the countdown above strikes zero, the expansion should go live. Don't forget to update your in-game client to access all the new items.

Speaking of new cards, we already have an idea about what we'll see in packs as part of the expansions. We have seen four EX items as of writing, but the total list should be above 100 cards. You'll also have to decide which packs to open, since they will vary as usual.

The trailer also gave glimpses of new trainer and item cards in the form of Lyra, Silver, Rescue Scarf, and Elemental Switch. I am confident that there will be more to collect once the packs go live.

If you're someone who loves to collect full art items, Pichu and Togepi are already confirmed. We will have the full list of all available cards once they're live in the game on July 30.

Following the success of Silent Hill 2 (2024), I've been excited to see where Bloober Team goes next with its horror games. Which is why I've been interested in seeing more of Cronos: The New Dawn, the developer's next original survival horror. I got to head to Oakland, California, to play through the opening couple […]
