Review: Wander Stars Is Charming, but Slow

Wander Stars strikes me as the sort of game that is something of a passion project. You can see Paper Castle Games' inspirations. The developer's heart is on their sleeves. It's a love letter to so many shonen series in so many ways. While it is charming, it unfortunately falters in some ways that keep it from flowing as well as the anime series the team obviously admires.

Ringo wants to be a Kiai Master. Think of it like getting to be the strongest martial artist in the universe. She's determined to train and become the best, as well as find out what happened to her missing brother Nashi. When running an errand for her grandma Anzu, she gets that chance. A mysterious individual named Wolfe came in search of pieces of the Wanderstar map, and it turns out part of it is in the charm Anzu gave Ringo. After learning multiple people are in search of all the parts, Ringo joins Wolfe on a quest to find the missing pieces, her brother, and her place in tournaments to show her strength as a master.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=renR57H1ZwA

Simply put, Wander Stars is very Dragon Ball-coded. Characters named after kinds of food. Searching for relics. Martial arts. Energy. A major focus on calling out attacks. A little bit of space travel. Even the Akira Toriyama influence in the main character designs and 90s anime direction come through. The aesthetic is used quite well, though I did find some of the more general enemies looked boring compared to major allies and enemies.

While Wander Stars is an anime-style, turn-based RPG with RPG mechanics at its core, it plays more like a visual novel in some ways. The story is set up in an episodic format, with each of the ten featuring Ringo going around to circles on maps in each location to advance the story. Icons let you know if there will be things like interactions with NPCs, opportunities to get items, and battles along the way, and there tends to be at least two "final" option spots in most locations to determine which one of two possible "rewards" you get for completing the map. Getting to different spots might mean items, new words for battles, or Pep Up perks.

Said battles work differently than you might expect as you aren't selecting set attack or skill options. As a Kiai Master, Ringo attacks with words, and the phrases you cobble together determine attacks. So to add an element, you would need to include the mention of it like "Electric," "Fire," or "Light." Action words can involve attacking ("Kick," "Punch," or "Smash") or more supportive assertions ("Block" or "Item"). Adjectives ("Excellent," "Fast," or "Special") can enhance and modify actions to change their effects. Naturally, you also are limited in how many words you can equip at one time. If you don't completely knock someone out and instead make them submit, you can also get bonus rewards like the Pep Ups as a passive boost. It's inventive and calls to mind all those shonen anime series with characters constantly naming and screaming out their attacks.

I do think the fights can get a little tedious. After getting certain words around the halfway point, it can feel like there are some gamebreaking combinations. But before you get to that, the pace can be slow. Selecting words, picking out ones that can be used and aren't on cooldown, and working out combos, is a lot. When you get words selected, you need to press a button to execute that attack, then press an additional one to end the turn. Sometimes in episodes after the first one, I had issues with equipping and removing words for an attack when rearranging my moves, which could bog things down too.

The execution of the save system sometimes got in the way of my sessions as well. It only saves once you enter a new map. You can't take a pause in the midst of an area. Considering these locations can involve multiple long battles, not to mention a lot of time can be needed to get through if you want to visit every point on the road.

What's even worse than the awkward pacing in battles and save system are the bugs. I actually waited to write this review to see if a few patches would help. There was still an instance in which it softlocked when I was in the pause menu, but I can't seem to trigger that anymore. However, it does seem like an issue I experienced with a first episode boss softlocking the game is gone for good. And since it does only save when you first enter a map, you might need to replay quite a bit to catch up. You also can't skip story scenes, so if a softlock issue does come up, you need to see everything again.

Wander Stars is interesting and tells a Dragon Ball type of tale, especially considering its novel combat system that uses words to construct every action. The aesthetics are fantastic. It's clearly a labor of love and tribute to shonen series. The issue is there are some bugs that can hamper the experience, especially if it softlocks and you find yourself losing progress due to it only automatically saving at the outset of every map. A few patches should help things along and I think it is neat, but I do think the execution and bugs might keep it from being for everyone. I recommend checking out the demo first.

Wander Stars is available for the Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Battlefield 6 aiming RPG at a helicopter

Battlefield 6 offers you plenty of freedom to construct your loadout, but you should always opt for the most meta choices.

Going for the meta has some obvious advantages, since you'll have a competitive edge over your opponents. Your choice of class is essential, and so is the setup that you run in the battle. This guide will help you understand a perfect build for every class in Battlefield 6.

Best loadouts to use in Battlefield 6

Assault

Category Choice
Primary NVO-228E Assault Rifle
Siidearm M45A1
Gadget One M87A1
Gadget Two High Explosive Launcher
Throweable Frag Grenade
Field Spec Adrenaline Injector

Frontliner class in Battlefield 6
Screenshot by Destructoid

The Assault class offers you the highest scope for experimentation due to how the abilities work.

However, NVO-228E is the best assault rifle in Battlefield 6. It takes a fair time to unlock but offers great damage, reload speed, and more. The only limitation is the range, but that can be managed quite easily.
With Assault, you can carry another primary as a gadget, and my choice is the M87A1. This shotgun is unlocked by default. I see no reason to change it. For the Training Path, you should go with Frontliner. The Frontliner spec can heal faster and better, and works well with the Support class.

Don't forget to equip the High Explosive Launcher, which allows you to sweep objective areas and open up new paths to destruction. Very little can go wrong with the Assault class if you opt for the build above.

Support

Category Choice
Primary weapon KTS100 Mk8
Secondary weapon P18
Gadget 1 Defibrilator
Gadget 2 Grenade Intercept System
Throwable Smoke Grenade
Field Specialization Combat Medic

Combat Medic spec in Battlefield 6
Screenshot by Destructoid

The Combat Medic spec in Battlefield 6 is one of the best options for every game mode, and you can master it quite easily. Unlike other specs, your objective is clear: stay alive and close to your allies to save them. Use the Defib gadget to revive your allies when they're down instantly.

The KTS100 Mk8 is the best LMG in the current meta, and it offers low recoil with high ammo capacity. You can use it to suppress enemies from a distance and lay down cover fire for your allies. Use the Smoke Grenade to hide your teammates on the map, while the Grenade Intercept System makes it easier for your squad to survive.

While your primary task is to heal, always use the Defib since it can insta-revive. If a downed ally is in the open, drag them to a hidden spot.

Recon

Category Choice
Primary M2010 ESR
Sidearm M45A1
Gadget One C4 Explosives
Gadget Two AP Mine
Throwable Frag Grenade or Proximity Detector
Training Path Sniper

The Recon is the only class in Battlefield 6 that comes with the best weapon from the get-go. The M210 ESR is accurate, can one-shot enemies with a headshot, has great range, and you can customize it further as you unlock different attachments. It's the most stable rifle, and you can get the most out of it with the Sniper spec.

For gadgets, you'll want to have C4. Plant it strategically, and it can take out enemy vehicles without the need for an Engineer class. You can also use it as a defense to protect yourself from enemies who might close in on your position. You can do the same with an AP mine, and the Proximity Detector will further help you by marking enemies who are close to you.

Engineer

Category Choice
Primary PW5A3 (MP5)
Sidearm M45A1
Gadget One MAS 148 or RPG-7V2
Gadget Two AV Mine
Throwable Frag Grenade
Training Path Anti-Armor

A tank in Battlefield 6
Screenshot via EA

The Engineer becomes a must-pick if you're not playing CQB, and the Anti-Armor choice is clear. It provides you with multiple abilities to take down opposition vehicles. You have more effective damage against them, along with additional ammo.

For your primary, the PW5A3 is your best bet. There are other good choices, but you'll always be close to the enemy. The PW5A3 suffers from poor recoil, so that's one area you'll have to improve. For your secondary, opt for the RPG-7V2 if there are plenty of tanks to take down. Otherwise, the MAS 148 is a better choice in larger maps where there are choppers.

Make sure to use AV Mine and replace AV Grenades with Frag options. This provides better synergy with the other items in your loadout, as far as taking down enemy vehicles is concerned. The Anti-Armor path provides you with buffs that accelerate your potential to take down the vehicles anyway, and all you have to do is use the above build to aid your efforts.

Which card you should pick

The first deciding factor should be your squad-based requirements.

  • If you need an LB, go for Bompastor
  • If you need an ST, go for Papin
  • If you need a CM, go for Guti

If you care solely about the meta, you should go for Bompastor. Her playstyles and stats fit well for the LM and LB positions, especially if you have a taller striker in your team. My second favorite choice is Guti. His card has great stats and playstyles, and he can also fit well into the CAM position. Incisive Pass+ is a fantastic choice when it comes to meta playstyles.

I won't bother taking Papin from this SBC, as there are better strikers to pick from the market if you choose to complete using coins.

The 31st Consort Manga Relationship Is Surprisingly Healthy

I was worried about The 31st Consort when Yen Press first picked it up! It's a "get this character" hitched manga! It's setting up the idea of multiple rivals, since the heroine Felia is the 31st of 31 possible queens for King Macron! There were already hints of bullying from both palace officials and other love interests in the first few chapters! However, I'm delighted to report that the more heartwarming elements of the first volume weren't a fluke and the second volume also seems to suggest the actual relationship between Felia and Macron is not only somewhat normal, but even loving and healthy.

Editor's Note: There will be some minor spoilers for volume 2 of The 31st Consort below.

As a quick catch up, King Macron is single and, in order to find a bride and queen, the government and such basically dictated he needs to pick from a selection of consorts he'll meet on a regular basis. These are women from the country's noble families. 31 were chosen, and he'll visit each one for one day each month. Sometimes there are special events at which they all gather, the first of which comes up in this second volume. Felia is from a smaller and more rural province, and as such ended up being made the 31st consort.

Naturally, she's the one who he ended up actually liking, due to how genuine, hardworking, kind, and down-to-earth she is. She's also become a favorite of many in the palace, in particular his guards, due to her making food, gardening, and other resourcefulness.

In the first volume, we see the two developing an interest in each other! It's not love at first sight. Rather, he's genuinely curious about her and comes to appreciate her personality and the way she interacts with folks. Through his visits, she also sees he's not a typical noble or king and is as, well, normal as she is. There's a real appreciation and fondness, and that leaves off with him deciding she might be the one who is right for him and her actually wanting to be there and be picked instead of waiting out the process until she can go home.

With the second volume, we're seeing how that plays out further. As I mentioned, it marks the first instance in which a number of consorts will all appear at once together for an event. Macron knows he wants to take this as a chance to see Felia and spend time with her, especially since her being 31st means he might not even see her some months, so he gears it as a more casual affair involving tea. (Knowing she grows her own tea from herbs and brews it herself.) Seeing that consideration, to choose an event she'd be comfortable with and good at, is really heartwarming. So is his making a motion before it even starts to let authorities know she has his support and he has her back.

This comes up again fairly early in this book. A royal housekeeper has had it in for Felia since the process began due to her being more practical and personable. She's attempted to make her life more difficult as a result. He steps in and shuts that housekeeper down for Felia making friends and helping his guardsmen, again showing his support, while also giving the two a chance to meet and flirt a bit. Likewise, in both this instance and the one with the consort-wide tea party, he gives her a chance to shine and she gets a chance to make him feel more comfortable.

However, while the actual relationship between Felia and Macron is good and we do see her winning over almost everyone she meets (even some former enemies), that doesn't mean it's a 100% wholesome and kind story. The concerns I had before about the array of rivals and bullying do return again in this installment. It also leads to a potentially dangerous situation that's more threatening than ones in the first volume. I do appreciate King Macron's response to it, as well as how others handle it, but it does show the series will continue using that for drama and plot points.

Still, I do appreciate that The 31st Consort is more heartwarming and healthy than dark or dramatic, with both King Macron and Felia seeing like a potentially ideal couple. We do see feelings gradually develop between them in a healthy way. There are no sudden fixations or decisions to jump into a marriage. There's proper respect shown on each of their parts, not to mention admiration. It leaves the impression that, while there will be challenges, this is absolutely a power couple that will succeed and end up together.

Volume 2 of The 31st Consort is available now, and Yen Press will release volume 3 of the shojo manga on December 16, 2025.

Ranking up your weapons will unlock different attachments that are specific to them. You can also unlock pre-built weapon packages that have pre-defined setups and cosmetics. Similarly, you'll get more customizable options for your vehicles that you can then equip from Loadout.

Battlefield 6 has four different classes on offer, and you can customize them further with specs once you level up your account.

All four classes can be top choices if you spend the time to master their strengths and weaknesses. However, there's a competitive meta inside the game, and some classes will perform better, especially when you divide them based on their specs.

This guide will help you understand which classes are well-suited in the current meta of Battlefield 6.

Complete Battlefield 6 class tier list

The effectiveness of any class in Battlefield 6 depends heavily on your playstyle. You can pick an unpopular class and rock with them if you understand the basics well. I have used three tiers to separate the classes and their specs.

  • S-tier specs work well in every game mode and are also relatively beginner-friendly.
  • A-tier specs are very close to S-tier options, but they have slight weaknesses.
  • B-tier specs are average options unless you spend time to learn and overcoming their weaknesses.

S-tier class

  • Frontliner (Assault): The Assault class is in a powerful position with the introduction of CBQ, and Frontliner is significantly better than Breacher. Its active ability, Rally Squad, injects all nearby squad members with a temporary Adrenaline that's amazing in close-quarters battles. Quick Recovery allows you to heal faster and better, while Adrenaline Rush will enable you to spread the effects of your Adrenaline Injector to your teammates. Pair with a good Support, and a good Frontliner can get you a high number of kills consistently.
  • Anti-Armor (Engineer): If you're playing any mode outside of CBQ, having Anti-Armor on your team is essential. Any damage you do to vehicles (of every kind) will reduce their repair effectiveness by 50% for 10 seconds. You get to enjoy 15% faster reload speeds on the launcher and get extra rockets. Without Anti-Armor, it's impossible to take down enemy vehicles and tanks, which can be a one-way ticket to defeat.
  • Combat Medic (Support): Playing a well-coordinated team with your friends requires a Combat Medic in every mode. You can use your Defib gadget to instant-revive allies when they're down. Doing so automatically heals you, which is a bonus. Your normal heals also happen significantly faster, and the class also makes it quicker for you to drag downed allies. The Combat Medic might not be a flashy spec, but it's necessary for every map and for every team. Otherwise, you'll be losing a lot of time dying and respawning on the map.

A-tier class

  • Sniper (Recon): The only reason for Sniper to be in A-tier is due to the difficulty in learning the advanced concepts of the class. Once you learn them, the Sniper is easily S-tier. If you headshot an enemy, they can't be revived. When you hit an enemy, it marks their position on the map, while the spec also offers Auto-Spotting over a longer distance. You can hit your enemies harder, better, and announce their position to your team. However, you'll have to ace the art of shooting, as a misfire could prove to be costly.
  • Combat Engineer (Engineer): Almost the antithesis of Anti-Armor, Combat Engineers allow you to preserve your vehicles better. Vehicle Regeneration is a fun ability that allows you to repair a vehicle by just sitting in it. Overheat Control allows your tanks and vehicles to fire longer, while repairing friendly gadgets makes them last longer with higher HP. A note: While Anti-Armor feels more powerful, Combat Engineer is a safer and more stable choice.
  • Fire Support (Support): It took me a couple of rounds to understand how underrated the Fire Support specialization feels. On paper, the class might look useless. However, the reality is quite different, as you can strap an LMG, mount yourself, and keep firing at the enemy to suppress the opposition frontline. You also get quicker ammo resupplies (applies to your teammates) and less incoming damage from explosions. If you want to play it safe and be a good team player, Fire Support is a fun choice.

B-tier class

  • Breacher (Assault): The Breacher isn't bad, especially on maps where the strategic entry points are few and far between. However, the abilities compared to Frontliner's are inferior. Agile Shooter works well in run-and-gun situations, but you might not always rely on that. Extra Grenades is a pretty insignificant modifier, while Unrelenting Reload's 15% faster reload for Incendiary-based Shotguns and projectile launchers is situational in use.
  • Spec Ops (Recon): Like Breacher, Spec Ops falls flat due to its abilities. Low Profile only works if you're proning all the time (which isn't possible in every situation). Spotting enemy gadgets near you can be helpful and allow you to prevent stepping on a mine, but the use-case scenario is niche. I didn't find too much use of Stealth Tactics either, so the Spec Ops specialization could do with a buff or two.
