There's an unpredictable "Necropolis" event in Darkhaven that will slowly turn the entire world undead. It generates a Lich sarcophagus that spills a sickly wave of gloom, rolling across the procedural map to clog player waypoints and fill the alcoves with bony minions. Let the gloom thicken for long enough, and in theory, there will be nowhere safe for your character to spawn. A true apocalypse. You can transfer your character to a freshly generated world, but you might encounter something even hard to dispel: a volcanic eruption, rising floodwaters that breed Lovecraftian fish creatures, a sweeping ice age. Worse, you might encounter several apocalypses at once.

Interview: Bringing Back Fatal Frame II for the Remake

When it comes to the Fatal Frame series, Fatal Frame II might be one of the most recognizable entries due to it appearing on the PS2, Xbox, and Wii ahead of the Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC remake. Ahead of the return of Mio and Mayu, Siliconera spoke with Fatal Frame Series Producer Makoto Shibata about the project and what we can expect from this latest version of the game.

Jenni Lada: Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is the second remake of this game in the series. How did the team decide this would be the correct entry to bring back again?

Makoto Shibata: When we released the recent remasters, we received a strong response from fans asking specifically for Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly. Responding to those voices was the primary motivation behind this project. As it's one of the most popular titles in the series, we felt that a full remake—rather than a simple remaster—would allow it to be embraced by players who enjoy a wide variety of modern horror games today.

How influential were additions to the Xbox version of the original Fatal Frame II and Wii release to this version of the game, and can we expect to see some of those additions remain?

Makoto Shibata: There are no elements carried over from the Xbox version or the additional features of the Wii version. While screenshots from the Wii version may give a similar impression due to the over-the-shoulder camera angle, the controls and camera in this remake were completely rethought based on modern, standard TPS design. Once players actually try it, we believe they will clearly feel how different the experience is.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxsjGl2-a6o

The recent Fatal Frame remasters included photo modes. Can we expect to see that in this Fatal Frame II remake?

Makoto Shibata: Photo Mode is also available in this title. However, since the development environment has changed from the remasters and this game fully utilizes the engine during gameplay, we were unable to include certain features, such as placing additional characters. That said, players can still create original scene compositions using lighting adjustments, filters, stickers, and frames.

The new Camera Obscura features in Fatal Frame II Remake will let us zoom in on certain wraiths. How often will zoom come up, considering the official site noted there will be some wraiths and environmental elements specifically using this new mechanic?

Makoto Shibata: Zoom has been added as a function of the Camera Obscura itself. As such, players can enjoy the game fully without using this feature during normal play. Using zoom extends the effective range of the Camera Obscura and allows players to capture Wraiths at a larger scale, making it easier to deal greater damage. In exchange, the field of view becomes narrower while zoomed in, making it more difficult to track enemy movement. During exploration, zoom can also be used to photograph distant wandering Wraiths more clearly, and some exploration elements can only be captured using zoom.

Charms are new to Fatal Frame II Remake. How did you decide what types to add and address balancing with them?

Makoto Shibata: We incorporated Team NINJA's action RPG development expertise when designing systems that support gameplay and enhance the Camera Obscura's capabilities. These include a wide range of effects, from standard increases to attack and defense, to features that make Wraiths easier to photograph or items easier to find. From a balance perspective, adjustments are made based on Camera Obscura performance and overall game progression. While the Camera Obscura can be upgraded in this title, not all abilities can be enhanced at once. The system allows players to compensate for weaker aspects or further strengthen their preferred strengths, enabling flexible fine-tuning to suit individual play styles.

Is there any particular charm you really like that you can talk about?

Makoto Shibata: There is a charm that automatically turns the camera toward the direction of nearby Wraiths, making the game easier to play for those who are less comfortable with camera controls. For players who enjoy photography, there is also a charm that applies pan focus when taking scenic photos. While it does not affect combat, it is a feature that reflects the unique nature of a game centered around using a camera.

The original Fatal Frame II had different story segments and four possible endings, with some parts locked beyond certain choices or difficulty levels, and the Wii remake added two more. Will there be any additional endings or scenes, and will the ability to hold Mayu's hand affect things?

Makoto Shibata: This title is a remake of Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly, and it does not include the two endings from the Wii version. However, we have added a brand-new ending. In the original game, holding hands with Mayu was only depicted in cutscenes, but in this remake it has been implemented as a new gameplay action. While we cannot go into detail, we can say that it plays an important role in the newly added and revised story elements.

This is now the third time we've seen the second Fatal Frame game and remasters of the fourth and fifth entries appeared on multiple platforms. How would you feel about a remake of the original game or remaster of the third, given they're now no longer widely available?

Makoto Shibata: This full remake of Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly was created in response to many requests from fans. We are aware that the first and third titles in the series are currently difficult to access or play, so if there is sufficient demand, we would consider it.

Likewise, we've seen a lot of Fatal Frame remasters and remakes, but there hasn't been a new entry lately. How would you feel about a new one?

Makoto Shibata: At present, there is nothing we can share regarding a brand-new title. However, since this remake was rebuilt in a way that is very close to creating a new game, if we were to develop a new entry in the future, it would likely be an evolution of the systems and know-how established here.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake will come to the Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC on March 12, 2026, and a demo will appear on March 5, 2026.

Preview: Fatal Frame II Remake Still Prioritizes Mio and Mayu

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly has always been a tale of bonds between sisters, specifically twins, with the heroines Mio and Mayu at the forefront of the original and the upcoming remake. After getting to spend some time with the early hours of this new take on the classic horror game, I was delighted to see that seems even more reinforced. From the recreation of classic moments to gameplay choices, it seems like this new take continues to prioritize the two.

Fatal Frame II Remake seems to follow the story rather faithfully in its early hours. The Minakami forests where they used to play will be torn down, and the two are spending time there before it happens. While this seems to be a moment of reflection for Mayu, in the case of Mio it is bringing up bad memories. Some time earlier, when the two were exploring, she was running ahead and ignoring her sister's calls to slow down and wait for her. As a result, Mio wasn't there when the ground gave way under Mayu, causing her to fall and badly injure her leg. So much so that even now, Mayu's knee seems affected and she walks more slowly and with a limp. While Mio remembers that, otherworldly crimson butterflies lead Mayu down a path and the two of them to the lost Minakami Village. Once trapped, we not only see the story look at their bond, but that of other tragic siblings that now haunt that town.

One of the new gameplay features highlighting the connection comes up almost immediately in Fatal Frame II Remake. In this installment, Mio and Mayu can hold hands. While showing a more tangible connection, it also offers gameplay benefits by allowing the one sister to help calm down and heal the other in situations when a ghost might have attacked and affected her mental state. Initially, we're sort of given this option as a means to see how it works as the two enter the village together and explore a suspicious home. But in these introductory moments, we also get to see how Mayu's presence can soothe Mio and how we'll need to reach out to her to help.

Something I noticed about this element during the preview is that holding Mayu's hand isn't easy or automatic for Mio in Fatal Frame II Remake. It's a conscious decision that you then need to exert extra effort to maintain by continuing to hold the trigger button, rather than the two remaining together, holding hands without any input on the player's part. Given themes I remembered from the original and different events, I appreciated the choice and the additional mindsets and elements it can convey.

As for the general experience in these early hours, Fatal Frame II Remake feels both familiar and like it prioritizes Mio's journey to find Mayu and survive Minakami Village. The Camera Obscura felt quite comfortable in my early encounters, and it felt easy to pull up and use it to snap photos of wraiths. The area and environmental design in these early hours made it possible to notice when things were awry and pick out the ghosts lurking about. At the same time, the photos I would capture and seeing the brief snap in the moment that showed foes in Shutter Chances almost felt artistic even as I was fighting for Mio's life. Even in this early build, the Camera Obscura seemed snappy and responsive on the PC.

Image via Koei Tecmo

But most important is that yes, in these early hours, the connection between Mio and Mayu felt at the forefront. In the earliest moments, the remake seems quite adept at using cinematography, juxtaposition of character positions, and initial quests and motivations to highlight the connection between the two. It seemed like it highlighted the sense of duty and obligation Mio had, which also came through in the English voice acting for the two. (I did notice on PC in this build that sometimes the voice overs came after the action on-screen happened in a cutscene, but this was an early, preview build and I could see that being remedied in a patch.)

The connection between Mio and Mayu is of the utmost importance in Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake, and I get the impression this retelling prioritizes that. The early story segments again prioritize the bond between the two and Mio's complex feelings and journey to reach her sister. The hand-holding mechanic also seems to tie-in to that. Meanwhile, the camera controls seem tight so far and like it will remain simple to take photos of the otherworldly inhabitants of the village.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake will come to the Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC on March 12, 2026, and a demo will appear on March 5, 2026.

Player standing and taking a picture with their phone by some spaghetti balls in disney dreamight valley

After rescuing Lady and Tramp from the strange pasta storm in their Realm, it seems to have followed you back to the village in Disney Dreamlight Valley. You need to get to the bottom of this odd phenomenon, and the investigation begins with The Spaghetti Incident quest.

This mission is the first step in a long process that eventually allows you to unlock Pluto as a Companion. You don't want to miss out on adding this adorable pup to your village, so here's a complete walkthrough for The Spaghetti Incident quest in Disney Dreamlight Valley.

How to complete The Spaghetti Incident in Disney Dreamlight Valley

Chasing spaghetti balls in disney dreamlight valley

Catch the Rolling Spaghetti inside the Dream Castle

After opening your mail and receiving the letter that triggers this quest from Merlin, head to the Dream Castle to see what's going on. Inside, you'll have massive balls of Rolling Spaghetti all around, similar to the ones you previously encountered during the Meatballs quest. Run around the Dream Castle to catch four Rolling Spaghetti.

Show the Rolling Spaghetti to Lady

Once you've caught all four Rolling Spaghetti around the castle, exit this building and locate Lady in your village. Chat with her to see what she thinks about this strange situation that's followed you back to the valley from the Realm. She smells even more of the spaghetti out in the valley, so you'll need to get to work cleaning it all up.

Locate the scent of spaghetti on the beach

Equip the Substitute Snout you made during The Jailbreak quest. Then, head down to the Dazzle Beach biome and search around for purple clouds. Once you're in this biome, search around to find and catch three Rolling Spaghetti.

They can spawn anywhere in this biome and move around quickly, so it may take a bit to catch them all. After obtaining all three, meet up with Lady to show her what you found and discuss what comes next.

Locate the scent of more Rolling Spaghetti around the beach

Lady smells even more spaghetti around the beach area, so you need to keep investigating to find it. Look for more purple clouds in the Dazzle Beach biome to determine where you need to go next. The trail leads directly to the Mystical Cave, which can be found near the east end of the biome, close to the ramp that leads up to the Peaceful Meadow area. Enter the cave to progress.

Catch all of the Rolling Spaghetti in the Mystical Cave

There's even more pasta on the loose, so scour the Mystical Cave to catch three more Rolling Spaghetti. This area has many levels, and the spaghetti travels around all of them, so be sure to check each one to collect them all. Meet up with Lady on the top level once you have all three to chat with her.

Open the Memory close to the entrance of the Mystical Cave

After giving the last batch of Rolling Spaghetti to Lady, you'll feel oddly sad, which causes a Memory to spawn. Open the Memory that appears next to Lady on the top level of the Mystical Cave. It reveals the first piece of a three-part Memory. Talk to Lady about what you've found to officially conclude The Spaghetti Incident quest.

This mission may be over, but it's only the first step in unraveling a larger mystery that eventually results in you unlocking a very special Companion. There's a lot more work to be done, so you'll want to learn how to unlock Pluto next.

Store in Roadside Research

Leading a double life as an alien and a gas station clerk isn't a simple task in Roadside Research. There are plenty of tasks to do daily, and one of them involves keeping the shop floors clean.

Having a clean gas station not only makes things look better, but it also attracts more customers. However, having more customers will also dirty your station floors more quickly. Let's look at when you should clean the floors and what some effective strategies are.

How to detect dirty floors in Roadside Research

The first task is to understand what a dirty floor looks like. If it's not dirty, there's no need to clean it. There are different types of trash, and the method to clean them (more on that later) also varies.

Dirt in Roadside Research
Screenshot by Destructoid

  • Skid marks, usually caused by incoming customers, are very common. You'll identify them from the dirty marks created on the wooden floor.
  • As an alien, you will also poop, and it can happen on the floor.
  • Dirty toilets will have a cloud on them. They can also be found over the gas pumps.
  • Random trash like cans, paper, etc.

Skid marks have been the most common experience, followed by random pieces of trash. Dirty toilets aren't very common, and they occur intermittently. Usually, it's good to visit the toilet if there's an increase in incoming customers.

How to clean your gas station in Roadside Research

To keep your gas station clean, you'll need to use different approaches.

Cleaning sponge in Roadside Research
Screenshot by Destructoid

  • To clean the skid marks, you'll find a sponge in your bathroom. Pick up the sponge (which, for some reason, appears like a shoe). Hold it with the left mouse button, and drag it on the mess. Keep doing so until the floor is completely clean.
  • The same method also works for removing stench from dirty gas pumps and toilets. Don't ask me why it works, and how a sponge can remove stenches.
  • For loose pieces of trash, you'll have to pick them up. Don't drop them in the dumpster. Most trash can be recycled to get Alien Points. Alient Points help you unlock upgrades via research.

That's pretty much all you need to know about keeping your gas station clean. A clean station will help bring in more customers and allow you to get more data.
