Three Runners in Marathon.

Loot is the name of the game in Marathon. As an extraction shooter, each run should see you coming back with loads of items in your inventory. That is, of course, if you aren't gunned down by crazed robots or other runners in the process.

Some areas in the game contain extra valuable loot, either as a reward for risky purchases and exploration or as a boon bestowed by defeated bosses, such as the Warden. The former usually comes in the form of Lockboxes, containers that you can discover across the game's maps and loot for particularly valuable items.

They are, as the name implies, locked, and you can only open them if you have the necessary Lockbox Key in your inventory.

So, here's how you can get it.

How to open Lockboxes in Marathon

Keymaker perk in Marathon.
The Keymaker perk lets you purchase Lockbox Keys from the Armory.

To be able to open a Lockbox in Marathon, you need a Lockbox Key. This is a generic item that can either be found around the game's maps or purchased from the Armory after prerequisites are met. I have had the most luck finding this item in the Southern Array location, particularly in the red building that has smashed windows at the top and some sort of office area within.

As for the purchases, Lockbox Keys become available in the Armory for purchase or as a free reward after you've leveled up the CyberAcme faction to Rank 5. It costs you a couple thousand credits to unlock this perk and it stays permanently, periodically offering you free Lockbox Keys and allowing you to buy them for quite cheap.

Lockbox Keys are permanently lost if you die with them in your inventory, as the game currently has no safe pocket system, unlike ARC Raiders or some other extraction shooters. The DCON boxes, which are currently seemingly tied only to quests, cannot be used to extract Lockbox Keys before a match ends (if you would ever need to do so).

At the end of the day, if you can't afford them, then you're likely to find a few every now and again among the game's largest compounds. But even the worst run can give you enough money to buy several keys.

Additionally, higher-level boxes require better keys, such as the Deluxe Key.

UESC Commander in Marathon

Marathon has some really difficult contracts to complete, and one of them involves scanning two Sparkleaf bioprinters in South Relay.

Finding South Relay isn't a difficult task, as it's a named location on the Perimeter map. However, the exact spots of the two bioprinters are hidden. For some inexplicable reason, their markers appear when you're less than 20m away, making it a bigger challenge.

This guide should help to solve your problem by helping you find both of them.

How to find the Sparkleaf bioprinters in South Relay in Marathon

Completing the scans is one part of the Data Reconstruction contract that can appear randomly for you. This is certainly one of the more rewarding contracts, but it will take longer to complete. The first step of the contract requires you to find the two Sparkleaf bioprinters.

I have marked the locations of both bioprinters in the image above. However, it's a rough estimation of where you need to be. Let's find out the location of both. To find the first, we have to reach the exact spot where you can find the UESC comms antenna that has to be sabotaged as part of the introductory contracts.

Location 1

The first bioprinter is in the room that holds the antenna on its roof. Once you reach the location, you'll find a cyan colored room. Enter through the door, and move close to the other door. Don't exit, and just wait for the quest marker to come up. The bioprinter is located to the left of the room.

To find the second one, move to the central area of the South Relay location. Once you've reached the marked spot (refer to the first image), you'll find a door opening to your left (image below).

The door has a white container in front of it. Enter the room using the door, and you'll find your second bioprinter. Once you enter through the door, the marker will show the exact location.

Interact with the bioprinters to complete the scan. This task is easier to complete if you have another player with the same contract. In that case, you don't need to find the second Sparkleaf bioprinter. Scanning either one twice (once by you and the other by your teammate) gets the job done (for both of you).

The DCON in Marathon

Marathon's server slam is slamming through Steam charts. Its amazing art style and fun gameplay have brought in quite the crowd, and its free open beta has only just started.

Naturally, player retention is a crucial component of a game like this. Extraction shooters need to give you purpose, a reason to go out into the wild to collect whatever it is you're looking for. They do this via quests, and Marathon has plenty of them.

Several require you to go out and look for the DCON, a drop-box where various materials are deposited to complete the contract.

Here's where you can find and use it.

Delivering resources, salvage, and Unstable Biomass to the DCON

Several contracts in Marathon are tied to the DCON, which can be found in the northeastern parts of the Perimeter map.

So far, we've found several contracts that require you to go out and seek the DCON: Equitable Distribution, Deconstructed I, Nano Metrics I, and Inventory Control I. Each of these contracts asks you to find a particular item on the maps and then deliver it back to the DCON, which instantly sends it to the faction in question.

The DCON is located just above the Station location on the northern edge of Perimeter, on top of the top-left building in that compound. It can seemingly only be interacted with if you have one of the related quests with you and the items required in your inventory. It has been theorized that DCONs could become usable mid-game for delivering lower-quality items before the round ends, such as salvage and other instant-sell loot that could be cluttering your inventory.

Whatever the case, the DCON is a confusing little box and a crucial part of numerous highly rewarding Marathon contracts across most of its factions.

Some other quests have also been causing headaches, aside from the DCON itself, such as NuCaloric's introductory contract, which our guide should help you out with.

Marathon promotional image

Marathon will feature six factions at launch, but only one will be available by default.

While we will all begin with the CyberAcme faction, the options will expand rapidly once a fair bit of the early game content is cleared. Let's look at all six factions and how to unlock them.

Disclaimer: For Server Slam, Sekiguchi can't be unlocked. You'll need to wait until the full launch to unlock it as the sixth faction.

How to unlock all factions in Marathon

The table below has information about how you can unlock all six factions inside the game. Unlocking some of them is relatively easy, while a few might truly challenge your mechanical skills.

Faction How to unlock
CyberAcme Unlocked by default. To proceed further and unlock the other factions, you'll have to complete Welcome to Tau Ceti 1 and Welcome to Tau Ceti 2.
NuCaloric Find NuCal Employee ID in a building east of Overflow
Download employee data from the workstation nearby
Traxus Hack terminal at Intersection, Complex, or Bio-Research
Acquire Shipping Manifest from UESC Commander
Scan the nearby stacked shipping container before it is picked up
Mida Defeat 15 UESC across Tau Ceti IV
Smash 20 glass across Tau Ceti IV
Arachne Deal 60 damage to enemy Runners
Down an enemy runner
Sekiguchi Inject the Necrotic Sample in Southern Flight Control
Scan your shell in a southeastern Orientation

Once you unlock more factions, you'll get more upgrade options and armory purchases available to you before starting a new run.

How to rank up factions in Marathon

Unlocking factions is just one side of the coin. You must rank up all the factions as quickly as possible. To do so, you'll need to undertake contracts. You can only have one contract active at a time (this could change later after an update).

Once you undertake and complete contracts, you gain a currency called Rep. Rep is exclusive to different factions. You can also gain bonus Rep from team contracts once they've been completed successfully. This is an excellent way to rank up factions quicker.

That's pretty much all when it comes to ranking up factions. Some contracts tend to pay more Rep, but they can be significantly more challenging to complete.
