Starfield, despite having fallen short of lodging itself as firmly in the bit of humanity's collective psyche labelled 'the good shit' in comparison to its Bethesda-made siblings, will still achieve something akin to that at some point. I regret to announce that I have a theory. It involves handheld PCs, Project Helix – Microsoft's next, PC game-running Xbox console – and least likely of all, an apparently sincere attempt at making Windows 11 less of a bulging, AI-infested colostomy bag. That attempt is better known as Xbox Full Screen Experience, and now that it's finding its way onto portables outside the MS-branded Asus ROG Xbox Ally series (plus big-lad PCs as well), I'm convinced that it was introduced at least in part to test the waters of how a Windows PC/console hybrid could operate.

Shin Godzilla Tape Dispenser Can Cut OPP or Cloth Tape

Kotobukiya announced that its next piece of Godzilla merchandise will be a tape dispenser based on Shin Godzilla movie version of the kaiju. It will cost 4,400円 when it launches in July 2026 in Japan, and the official Japanese store already sold out. It isn't showing up in the US official or Amazon storefronts yet.

This Godzilla accessory is about eight inches long (~200mm), but Kotobukiya didn't note how tall it is. It features the kaiju's head and part of its back, with the back and spines going over the back of the roll of tape. The tape itself can be fed through the mouth, which can then be used to cut it. There is a stand shown, and the description noted the lower jaw and fins can be removed. Cloth, craft, and OPP plastic tape up to almost two inches wide (50mm) can be used with it. However, the listing doesn't mention duct tape support.

Here's a closer look at the Shin Godzilla tape dispenser. It is shown with OPP tape in the official photos.

It isn't uncommon for there to be more unusual types of merchandise based on Godzilla. For example, at the end of 2026, a humidifier shaped like it appeared. There was also a hammer shaped like the kaiju's foot.

The Shin Godzilla tape dispenser will launch in Japan in July 2026, and the movie is available worldwide.

3 Blue Protocol: Star Resonance Anime Crossovers Teased

There will be three anime series crossovers coming to Blue Protocol: Star Resonance, with all three appearing within the next two months. However, only two of them are known. Shangri-La Frontier and Fairy Tail are both confirmed. The third is a mystery. We also don't know what any of these tie-in events will entail.

The first event will be based on Shangri-La Frontier. That will show up on March 19, 2026. While that is coming soon, the official social media announcement didn't offer any insights into how The Wolfgang Clan will be represented. We don't know if this means folks like Sunraku and Oicazzo will show up, or if there will only be cosmetics based on them available to obtain.

The other two events are set to debut in May 2026. Neither one has a release date. However, since it is the one of the two revealed, it seems like Fairy Tail could show up first in the game. The mystery anime series will be around that month as well.

As a reminder, this is a different game than Bandai Namco's Blue Protocol MMORPG of the same name. However, it is based on that release.

Blue Protocol: Star Resonance is available on the PC and Android and iOS devices, and we'll see the first of three anime crossovers appear when Shangri-La Frontier heads to the game on March 19, 2026.

Fatal Frame 2 Remake Balance Patch Nerfs Some Ghosts

Now that Fatal Frame 2 Remake launched, Koei Tecmo confirmed there is a patch designed to address some balance issues with for some wraiths, and that makes encounters with those ghosts more fair. There aren't extensive patch notes going over all adjustments, however. The patch is already live for the PS5 and PC versions. The Switch 2 and Xbox Series X versions will also get the update in the near future.

The Fatal Frame 2 Remake game balance patch announcement specifically referenced two types of ghost encounters Mio can experience. One involves the new Aggravated Wraiths system. This kicks in during fights with certain spirits. They'll suddenly heal and become stronger, and you'll need to adjust tactics and do things like use different filters. These will adjusted due to player feedback. The other involves some of the Onryo ghosts we encounter, though no specific encounters were named.

As a reminder, this is the updated version of the PS2 game and pulls from that and not the later releases. A launch trailer appeared that highlighted some of the new gameplay elements, such as the ability for Mio to hold Mayu's hand and some of the new encounters we'll see.

Pokemon Sleep picture book for hospitals in Japan - Kabigon no Yume - Snorlax's Dream

The Pokemon Company revealed via the Pokemon Sleep social media account that it is working with Eisai to distribute Pokemon-themed sleep awareness campaigns to hospitals across Japan. To launch this initiative, the companies will first release Sachika Shiomitsu's picture book, titled Kabigon no Yume or Snorlax's Dream. The book will be particularly distributed to hospitals and medical institutions that treat sleep-related disorders.

The story in this book will take place in the Pokemon Sleep universe. While the book will obviously star Snorlax, it will also feature more Pokemon like Pikachu, Togepi, Eevee, and Clefairy. The overall book will convey the importance of getting a good sleep to stay healthy.

The official Japanese Pokemon Sleep tweet containing this announcement is also available to view right below:

The Kabigon no Yume (Snorlax's Dream) picture book will be gradually available in hospitals and medical institutions across Japan. It will be based on Pokemon Sleep, the sleep management app available worldwide on iOS and Android mobile devices.

Rathalos in Monster Hunter Stories

Setting up an amazing squad in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection is easier said than done, as you'll need to look for monsties with the best possible stats.

This task is easier said than done. While you can always hatch the best of eggs, that doesn't guarantee a perfect monstie. Instead, you'll need to look for something called genes and master the concept.

How do genes work in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection

Every monstie has a dedicated set of Active and Passive skills. The number and types of skills of a monstie are determined by genes. If you refer to the image below, you'll find a young Rathalos that's available for all of us at the start of a journey.

Young Rathalos in Monster Hunter Stories 3
Screenshot by Destructoid

Notice the bottom right corner, and you'll find nine slots in a 3x3 grid. This grid is applicable for every monstie when they hatch. Some of the slots will be filled, and some will be empty. To get your perfect mostie, you'll need to fill these empty slots. Having nine filled slots will give the mostie the best set of skills.

While not all their slots might be filled at the start, you can inherit additional genes from other creatures. To do so, you need to understand how Bingo and Rite of Channeling work.

How does Rite of Channeling and Bingo work in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection

Rite of Channeling allows you to switch the genes from one monstie to another. You can do so in different ways.

  • Directly swap the genes from one monstie to another.
  • Manually select which gene/genes you want to swap.
  • Select the monsties and the genes you want to swap.

Once the swap is complete, you can continue to modify the genes of your selected monstie until you've filled all nine slots. However, randomly filling the slots is not the most optimal thing to do.

Perfect Bingo
Screenshot by Destructoid

When you use Rite of Channeling, you should match up genes to get the maximum possible bonus. If you manage to do so, your monstie will have an extra 5% damage as a bonus for all Power attacks. To do so, you need to match three Power genes in a row. You can match them vertically, horizontally, or diagonally.

You'll get the bonus damage for a Bingo even if the associated element and attack type don't match. If they do, however, then you can get multiple Bingos in a single row.

To build up your perfect monstie, Excursions are important as well.

How do Excursions work in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection

You can send your monstie on an Excursion to make it gain different stat bonuses and Environment Skills. To do so, you'll need Training Talisman, which can be purchased from the Melynx Emporium. They're expensive, so you should ration them properly. Additionally, only one monstie can be sent on an Excursion at any time.

To gain Environmental Skills, you'll need to pay attention to whether the monstie was present in that region. If you add a monstie to a habitat and then send it on an Excursion at the same place, it will be able to learn new skills based on their Environment Rank.

The ultimate aim is to have three S-rank Environment Skills active on your monstie at once. Three is the maximum number of Environment Skills any monstie can have. If you send them to a region they're unfamiliar with, your monstie will only learn the stat bonuses.

Every Environment Skill has three ranks for each region: B, A, and S. Your monstie can access the Skill if their Ecosystem Rank matches the region's grade. Additionally, you can also Awaken every Environment Skill if your monstie has the required genes.

Xbox image

Do you want Microsoft's Copilot AI at your side at all times when playing video games? No? Too bad, because it's happening on Xbox soon enough.

Microsoft has confirmed that its Gaming Copilot, whether anyone asked for it or not, is coming to Xbox consoles in 2026, according to a report by GamesRadar. And so soon, at any given time, gamers will be able to quickly ask the AI important and timely questions like "when does my Game Pass subscription expire" while mid-game.

Image via Xbox

"I'm excited to announce that later this year, we will bring Gaming Copilot to the current-generation consoles, and we will continue to bring it to more services that players are playing," said Sonali Yadav, Xbox's gaming AI partner group product manager, during a panel at GDC yesterday.

This doesn't exactly line up with new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma's sentiments from a few weeks ago after she took over for Phil Spencer, who retired in the midst of Xbox's brand collapsing over the past few years. But no one's really surprised by this latest development, either.

"As monetization and AI evolve and influence this future [of gaming], we will not chase short-term efficiency or flood our ecosystem with soulless AI slop," Sharma said in a letter to employees at the end of February. "Games are and always will be art, crafted by humans, and created with the most innovative technology provided by us."

Sharma was presumably speaking about generative AI and "slop" that's made by typing in prompts rather than art made by humans (generative AI tools are already being used in game development all over the industry). But Copilot is already confirmed to invade Series X|S consoles later this year, and potentially more, which is not exactly a big vote of confidence for those who are none too pleased about Sharma's past in AI-shilling becoming a problem for the console.

Copilot, along with basically every other AI companion that's flooded the market on every level (I especially detest Amazon's Rufus AI that incessantly pops up whenever I try to buy groceries or something), is just going to be shoved into everything at every level, I guess. It's already available for gaming on Windows 11, mobile, and the ROG Xbox Ally. Ignoring and disabling it is thankfully an option, so I'll be excited to do that as soon as I can.

So, gamers, do you have any hope for this AI-infested society we are living in? Because I'm running pretty low on that resource.

FBI's seal on the wall.

With so many games released on Steam every day, some bad actors are bound to slip through the cracks. The company employs extensive checks and verifications before putting a game up on its store, but skilled malicious programmers can and do find ways around them.

But now, they've got the FBI's attention, as the agency is launching an investigation into malware-riddled Steam games, some of which were released as recently as January this year and are still up on the store as of writing this article.

"The FBI's Seattle Division is seeking to identify potential victims installing Steam games embedded with malware," the agency stated in an alert posted March 11.

"The FBI believes the threat actor primarily targeted users between the timeframe of May 2024 and January 2026. In the investigation, several games have been identified," they added.

The games being investigated with particular interest are Lampy, BlockBlasters, Chemia, Dashverse or DashFPS, Lunara, PirateFi, and Tokenova.

This game allegedly contains malicious code. Image via Mez Dev Studios

Some of these titles were part of rather public and direct actions taken by Steam itself, most notably PirateFi, which was discovered to contain malicious software that could potentially compromise user devices. Steam took the game down and immediately notified anyone who had downloaded the title, advising them to run system scans and antivirus checks just in case something was attached to their PCs.

BlockBlasters reportedly stole over $150,000 in crypto from users last September (via PC Mag) and was promptly removed from Steam.

Tokenova was supposedly a fake game hosted on Steam, given to players via apps like Telegram, and cannot be publicly found on the platform anymore, nor is it clear if Valve itself took it off the store.

However, one game remains active on Steam: Lampy, presenting itself as a small-scale indie platformer with a simple 8-bit art style and retro gameplay.

"Embark on an enchanting journey with "Lampy," a mesmerizing puzzle-platformer that promises universal appeal. Navigate captivating levels, overcome obstacles, and immerse yourself in a world of wonder," its Steam description reads.

How and in what way this game is infected with malware was not revealed by the FBI, though if you ever downloaded, installed or played any of the games above, you are advised to let the agency know via the form or email available at the alert.

Steam gets flooded with new game releases every single day, and cases like these, rare though they are, remind us that we need to be extra careful when installing anything on our machines, even when they come from the most trusted source known to PC users.

Poster for the original version of Fortnite, Fortnite Save The World

Well, folks, it happened: Fortnite is increasing the price of its premium currency, V-Bucks, much to the dismay of a good chunk of its player base. The game, featuring heavy microtransactions and battle passes, helped spread to live-service games as a whole, and had stable prices for most of its existence, but now they're getting beefed up.

And, of course, Epic Games thinks this move is absolutely necessary.

Fortnite has revolved around huge collaborations with other popular franchises and IPs, and though many of these collabs had actual in-game events and content, most of them were primarily driven by microtransactions, specifically skins and outfits folks can purchase either standalone or earn via the battle pass. It's gotten to the point where Fortnite has become an actual marketing venue, one used by publishers to advertise their games, movies, TV shows, or just about any other form of audiovisual media.

Not having your IP in Fortnite nowadays is almost taboo. Screenshot by Destructoid

And given this strong reliance on selling cosmetics, purchasable exclusively with V-Bucks, it only makes sense that Epic would want to buff their primary revenue stream. The fans, at least those vocal enough to speak out, are having none of it, though.

"We need to fight this hard," one player said on Reddit. Epic thinks the game has grown to a point where it's unkillable, but with how many bad decisions they have been making, Fortnite might actually be gone for good," they added.

Others immediately started advocating and calling for a boycott of the game, at least its financial side, in an attempt to force Epic Games into rescinding its price increases. So far, there hasn't been much success, and Fortnite's lead designer Andre Balta actually came out to defend this move in response to the boycott campaign.

"We put a ton of work and care into Fortnite's gameplay, and this focus is only growing. Paying the bills frees up our teams to continue driving stories and building stuff you love," Balta wrote on X. The responses to his comments weren't so positive, though, as many believe Fortnite has long been focusing on microtransactions, cosmetics, and collabs, propping them up instead of actual gameplay and content, making this price increase feel that much more hurtful.

"For me personally, just my own experience lately, it seems to me that the collabs and item shop cosmetics have been the most important factor in promoting the game and it just doesn't feel right," Fortnite content creator MoonNite said in a reply to Balta.

Others were of the opinion that the price increase would probably be fine if there were content to justify it. "Something tells me these price increases aren't coming with more content in each pass," one player noted.

It's been a few days since the initial announcement of the price increase. Epic Games plans to start implementing these changes as of March 19, i.e., next Thursday. You'll now be getting some 20 percent less V-Bucks per pack, with popular choices like the $8.99 pack now giving 800 instead of 1,000 V-Bucks. The exact amount packs, which let you decide how many V-Bucks you want to buy, are essentially doubling in price, going from $0.50 per 50 V-Bucks to $0.99 for the same amount.

To compensate for some of these changes, Epic Games is lowering the price of certain store-bought items. As such, battle passes are going down from 1,000 to 800 V-Bucks to maintain the same real dollar price as they had before.

Actual cosmetics and outfits are staying the same, however, making them quite pricier than they were prior to the changes. Whether or not the boycotts will achieve anything remains to be seen, as community action can affect publisher behavior, even if some would disagree.

RE9 Requiem crying zombie

Now that I've completed Resident Evil Requiem, I put myself through the usual ordeal of reviewing every piece of Resident Evil lore, contradictory though it often is. In this renewed interest in Capcom's long-standing franchise, I began to wonder who a potential Resident Evil 10 should feature in the main role and came to realize that it's actually a rather difficult problem to solve.

Though a very recognizable survival horror franchise at heart, Resident Evil is thoroughly narrative-driven, introducing and building up characters and environments that embedded themselves into the collective consciousness of gaming culture, no matter if you played the games or not. In fact, it is so heavily reliant on good stories that having bad characters in a Resident Evil game would completely break the mood, even more so than leaning into action over horror.

And some of its characters are so recognizable and unique that it's almost impossible not to have them featured in an RE game in some capacity, because without them, the series is essentially starting from scratch. But that is perhaps what the franchise deserves to do and tried (rather successfully) with Resident Evil 7.

Ethan had no idea what was waiting for him in Louisiana. Image via Capcom

Since that game, though, Capcom has slowly circled back to its old, iconic cast. RE8 let you play a lot as Chris and turned him into a significant part of the story, whereas RE9 is essentially 50 percent RE4 Remake with Leon front and center. The best parts of all three of these games, though, are the slower-paced, horror-inducing moments with Ethan Winters and Grace Ashcroft, both of whom are the average Joe and Jane finding themselves in an environment far beyond anything they would have known up to that point.

It's also what makes the first two Resident Evil games so amazing as well. Jill and Chris wind up in the Spencer mansion, encountering man-made horrors beyond comprehension, as do Claire and Leon when they first arrive in RPD. That shock and awe of first encountering something entirely unnatural and superhuman induces both in the characters and in the players a sense of dread and fear by default, and I'd even say the characters' terror spills over to the player controlling them.

Later games started repeating the characters constantly, and while Jill's encounter with the Nemesis is rather memorable, it's still not her first run-in with Umbrella's monsters and thus not as scary. The Nemesis is also more or less a repeat of Mr. X from RE2, which many players had seen before, further decreasing the fear factor.

So, Capcom's ultimate misstep for RE4 onwards (even though RE4 was a good game overall) is the repetition of experienced characters, some of whom started to become almost superhuman due to all the plot armor surrounding them (cough, Chris punching boulders, cough), further and further reducing the horror and turning Resident Evil into a spectacle of action and absurdity. While that's fun and all, I don't think it suits the franchise whatsoever.

Grace Ashcroft RE9 Requiem
Grace is by far one of the best RE protagonists ever, but Leon's segments overshadowed her terrifying journey. Screenshot by Destructoid

Now that Resident Evil Requiem is on track to completely wrap up the Umbrella saga, options are more or less endless. We can go back to the mold, have some new plotline open up, and get new places to explore, perhaps again outside of the United States. But that'd have to be accompanied by a proper protagonist, one that does not have enough experience to face-tank the monsters coming their way—one that needs to start small and grow as the game progresses.

Naturally, both Grace Ashcroft and Ethan Winters started off shocked, terrified, and emotional, ending up the wiser by surviving tremendous ordeals that'd have killed most other people almost instantly. Neither should come back, though, because now they're no longer their initial selves, and their experiences helped them overcome their fear, which would defeat the purpose of a "survival horror" game.

Sure, I'm fine with having a dual protagonist setup, as most RE games do, but one should always be some average guy or girl, or at least someone who hasn't met the worst of the Umbrella bunch. They need to feel fear and they need to know terror in their hearts, because if they're an action hero, then we're in an action game, and the only way to genuinely be a horror game, Resident Evil 10 should make our protagonist as powerless as they can get.

And from that state of no power, they should grow and mature and gain skills to take down the threats they're facing.

But to that end, maybe our favorites should sit the next one out. Y'all are over 50 each, I'm sure retirement is on the cards.

Oh, and it should be first-person again, but I guess that's more or less guaranteed at this point.

The Tree in The Tower during 2025 Guardian Games.

Destiny 2 fans looking forward to a friendly class rivalry (or anything to do in the game, really) don't have to wait that long. Guardian Games 2026 is right around the corner, potentially giving you another reason to open the game other than to check the Eververse Bright Dust offerings.

The API hints at two new weapons coming this Guardian Games, in addition to a couple of likely reissues. Here's when Guardian Games 2026 kicks off in Destiny 2.

When is Guardian Games in Destiny 2?

Guardian Games 2026 is coming on March 24, Bungie confirmed on social media. The studio hasn't shared actual details about the event at this time, but it's safe to assume class competition will continue to feature at the heart of the festivities.

[hurrytimer id="1191349"]

This will be the first edition of the Guardian Games since the addition of the maligned Portal in The Edge of Fate, so it's hard to guess exactly what we'll get this time. The API hints at a 120rpm Stasis hand cannon called Triple Laureate and a fusion rifle called The Beacon (via light.gg), which might have a hard time luring players back. Perks for unreleased items in the API are always subject to change, particularly when they're still classified.

The shape of Guardian Games this year is also unknown. Solstice was mostly contained to the then-new Portal, which has largely worn out its welcome since. Festival of the Lost had its own activity, which may be the case for this year's Guardian Games as well—otherwise, odds are it won't be enough to populate the Tower.

The last Guardian Games had a boss rush mode, which might be particularly welcome. Court of Blades, one of Heresy's well-received seasonal activities, also consisted of a boss rush, so Bungie might return to that formula—though everything is speculation until Bungie formally confirms it.

The white house.

It's happened again. The US government, specifically the White House X account, used Nintendo's IP to brag about its "successes" in Iran, combining footage of the games with clips of US strikes on Iranian targets.

The official White House account on X once again utilized a company's IP, presumably without permission, to forward and showcase its political content. Like one of the last times, it's Nintendo's IP, specifically Wii Sports, which was combined with clips of US strikers on Iranian targets, such as ships, with the White House declaring the US is "UNDEFEATED" in this war with that Middle-Eastern country.

https://twitter.com/WhiteHouse/status/2032115039985881556

Trump's administration used Nintendo's IP on several occasions prior to this post, leading to sharp reactions from The Pokémon Company, which said that it did not give permission to the US government to use its content for political marketing. Furthermore, Nintendo itself filed a lawsuit against the White House, albeit not for its use of its IPs, but rather for the tariffs that it's been pushing since Trump took office last January.

The post has since garnered over 30 million views on the site, and it's only one of several videos the White House has published related to Iran, using video game footage like GTA's CJ to drive its points. Neither Rockstar nor Nintendo has commented on the matter yet.

The United States and its allies have been carrying out strikes against targets in Iran, killing several prominent Iranian officials, including long-standing leader Ali Khamenei. The Trump administration has labeled its action as preemptive action amid fears of an Iranian attack on Israel.

The war is still ongoing, causing a major crisis over oil prices due to the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz, as well as leading to a large civilian death toll in Iran, Israel, and other Gulf countries.

The Return on Investment 2 is one of the newer priority contracts in Marathon that will increase your relationship with the Traxus faction.

The contract has two tasks to complete, and let's look at how to complete both of them without any extra effort.

Marathon Return on Investment 2 contract walkthrough

The Return on Investment 2 contract can be broken down into the two following tasks.

  • Acquire explosive supplies from western Maintenance
  • Deal explosive damage to UESC or Runners

How to acquire explosive supplies from western Maintenance

The first task will require you to travel to the Maintenance POI. To be more precise, head to the southern part of the POI where all the buildings in white and pink are located. The container you're looking for is located in the building in the image below.

Room with the explosives
Image via Bungie

When you first find the building, it will be locked. To enter the room, shoot boxes around it until the barrier has been disabled. Head inside, and take the ladder. Once you get to the first floor, a quest marker will display the location of the supplies. Loot the supplies, and you're ready for the second part of the contract.

How to deal explosive damage to UESC or Runners

To complete the second task and the contract, you have to do at least 750 damage with the explosives to either runners or UESC troops. Unless you're extremely good at PvP, it's best to target UESC troops. Once you notch up 750 damage, you'll be able to complete the second Return on Investment contract.
