Ed (RPS in peace) has, finally, posthumously, got his wish: another Screamer. This one's gone all cyberpunk and/or anime-styled, with a heavy focus on story – it follows multiple, multinational merc-drivers entering a lightly murderous racing tournament – but can it still deliver on drifty driving thrills? After much practice, Mark and James both avoided clattering into the track barriers long enough to find out.

Sundays are for waking up in a Holiday Inn and finding that the breakfast buffet hash browns are glued to the bottom of the serving pan. Tarnation! I bellow like an enraged thunder god, like Vesuvius at full bloom, and stab the tray wildly with my knife and fork. I am dragged away by heavyset teenagers, who are about to heave me into the canal when I protest that I haven't yet finished writing the weekly Sunday Papers article for prominent videogame website Rock Paper Shotgun. Shocked, the outsized urchins release me, and I scurry back to my typing desk with a mugful of baked beans. I'll be back for those hash browns. I will have my vengeance.

Once Upon a Witch's Death Is a Tearjerker Manga

When the premise of a series flat out says it involves a character collecting 1,000 tears, you know it's going to be an emotional read. Even though Once Upon a Witch's Death is a series that involves its heroine collecting "happy tears," it's still the kind of manga series that will get you all choked up. That's because even from Meg Raspberry's very first attempts in the first volume, we're seeing a window into heartfelt moments that showcase sympathetic situations.

Editor's Note: There will be spoilers for the first volume of the Once Upon a Witch's Death manga below.

Once Upon a Witch's Death kicks off with its premise the moment the manga begins. On Meg Raspberry's 17th birthday, her mentor Faust the Eternal Witch tells her she's cursed to die. In one year, when she turns 18, it will take effect. After confirming it isn't a bad joke, Faust explains that if Meg can nurture a Seed of Life, she can save herself and gain immortality. However, in order to do so, she must fill a glass bottle with 1,000 tears of happiness earned via helping people.

Of course, Meg is so impetuous that she actually dashes out to try and fill the jar with joy before giving Faust a chance to completely explain. But things work out in the end and, by the time the apprentice gets back home to her mentor, she's already gotten two.

Once Upon a Witch's Death is packed with emotion. Meg is incredibly expressive. This is mainly played up for comedic effect. Her anguish at finding out about her fate, then learning there's a way to overcome it, to the despair at nobody finding her jokes super funny, is fantastic. Likewise, it's an element that keeps coming up. Enthusiasm and reckless abandon constantly carries her through. So do occasionally dubious attempts to save time and complete her quest. Her second major happy tears attempt sort of starts with her exclaiming, "Why am I trying to make people people feel things the ethical way?" And when getting to the animal testing phase of her hormone-manipulating potion, she goes to an array of sweet animals and says, "Please… die in my place." The extremes it goes to are hilarious. Especially in this manga adaptation.

But it is even more lovely when we do get to the heartwrenching, emotional, happy-cry kinds of moments. Because the Once Upon a Witch's Death manga is filled with those too! It goes all-in right away, with a grieving family in town dealing with the death of the mother and a desire to do something in her memory. Then we move onto watching Meg try and help her best friend Fine fix a watch that belonged to someone she loved. It's all so touching. Meg genuinely does have a talent for connecting with people and helping them, and it's easy to get choked up when she succeeds.

Once Upon a Witch's Death is a manga that relies heavily on emotion both to drive Meg's journey and get the reader engrossed, and its first volume succeeds at it. The lead's personality is so huge and entertaining that she inspires joy and can get you crying as a result of her outreach efforts. The scenarios at the outset all do a wonderful job of making you feel for everyone involved.

Volume 1 of Once Upon a Witch's Death manga is available now, and Yen Press will release the second volume on July 28, 2026. It also handles the light novel. The anime adaptation is streaming on Crunchyroll.

Kliff fighting the Staglord in Crimson Desert.

Crimson Desert's AI art was never meant to be in the final build and was created during the game's early days but "unintentionally" made it to release. The developers have apologized for including AI assets and for not disclosing their use of generative technologies, promising to remove all "affected content" and be more transparent in the future.

This was shared by Pearl Abyss via the Crimson Desert account on X, following previous allegations of AI assets and art being in the game. We previously mentioned how a certain painting in the Oakenshield Manor in Hernand was potentially AI-generated, though it turned out there were way more suspected AI-generated assets in the game than we initially thought.

Now, the developers have vowed to remove and replace all AI content in the game, as well as to be more transparent about its development process down the line.

https://twitter.com/CrimsonDesert_/status/2035718975909470706

"During development, some 2D visual props were created as part of early-stage iteration using experimental AI generative tools. These assets helped us rapidly explore tone and atmosphere in the earlier phases of production," the developers wrote.

"However, our intention has always been for any such assets to be replaced, following final work and review by our art and development teams."

They further added that they "also acknowledge that we should have clearly disclosed our use of AI" and that their plans to replace the assets in question down the line "does not excuse the lack of transparency."

Finally, the developers promised to scan the game thoroughly to remove and replace any and all AI-generated content in the game.

"We are currently conducting a comprehensive audit of all in-game assets and are taking steps to replace any affected content. Updated assets will be rolled out in upcoming patches," they said.

Crimson Desert has been experiencing waves of criticism due to its supposedly clunky controls and technical issues, with the AI discussion further fanning the flames of controversy. It is good to see developers taking full responsibility for their actions, as the use of AI, no matter what, should always be disclosed, and assets generated by it should never be allowed to make it into final builds.

I will say that even using it in development isn't such a great idea, as it takes artists' minds towards the average, and that ideation should be done manually and without using any artificial tools. At the end of the day it's their prerogative, though, but they should always tell us so we know what to expect.

The Staglord boss in Crimson Desert starting down Kliff, the progatonist in a snowy castle.

There are several bounties available in Crimson Desert for you to complete and get extra rewards, and capturing Haldin will fetch you the highest amount of Silver. The Haldin bounty is also quite different from the rest in terms of the required efforts. You'll first need to liberate an outpost before you can think about capturing him.

Let's look at how to complete all the key steps that are part of this bounty.

How to start the Haldin bounty in Crimson Desert

To begin the Haldin bounty, you'll have to liberate at least one Vilkom Outpost. This has to do with the fact that Haldin is hiding in one such outpost (more on that later). The correct outpost is located north of Hook Rapids and Rocca's Hill. I have marked the location in the image below for your ease.

Before you head to the outpost, you'll need to find the poster for the bounty. You can find it on any of the lamp poles that are located all around Hernand. The exact location will be random. You can also take help from the notice board in Hernand City. Once you accept the poster, you can then begin the bounty by traveling to the Vilkom Outpost.

You'll also find the Karin Quarry on the way, which has several Bleed Bandits. I didn't find an alternative route, so brace to face some of these bandits and take them down in combat.

When you reach the Vilkom Outpost, Haldin will try to hide. However, he will try to flee when he spots you. That's your visual cue to know the target (which will be highlighted on the minimap as well). Get close to him to take him down. Land a few hits, and the option to tie him up with pop up. If you catch him unawares from the back, you should be able to tie him up directly.

Once tied, he won't be able to escape. Now, you can concentrate on the remaining enemies. Deal with them, and then return Haldin to the nearest jail to get your 30 Silver. The reward amount will be reduced by half if you manage to kill him during the capture process.

White Crow the Witch in Crimson Desert

Crimson Desert has different factions to interest you in different tasks, and completing those will help you get Contribution Points. Different from your staple currency, Contribution Points can be used to get different items in the game.

While you'll have a limited amount of Contribution Points to begin with, you'll be able to get more from in-game activities.

How to get Contribution Points in Crimson Desert

Contribution Points in Crimson Desert are essentially faction points that you get from completing various faction quests. Every faction has specific tasks and requests you get to complete. These are largely optional content that's different from the main quests. However, finishing these tasks can be immensely rewarding to level yourself up.

Open your Journal tab, and then select the Faction Quests to view all the available tasks. These tasks will mostly be from one of the following options.

  • Defeat bandits
  • Help beggars
  • Liberate areas
  • Bounties
  • Some main story quests.

Once you've enough Contribution Points, you can use the currency at Contribution Shops. There are separate shops for every faction in Crimson Desert. The items you get from the shops also vary based on the faction.

When you're in Hernand, take the path that leads you to the castle. You'll find a door on the main path (towards the castle). Head inside, and you'll find Haldwin. You can then choose to spend your Contribution Points to buy whatever you want and need.
