Gundam Epyon Apex Legends Alter Version Color Scheme Pops

Bandai Namco's Gundam model kits are really versatile, and you can do a lot of things on your own with them. So, say you get any of them from a place like Amazon or Big Bad Toy Store, there will always be a default color that matches units from anime series. You can then do what you want. But from time to time, there will be variants that give an option of a different style without all the painting and extra work on the part of the person building it. I sort of feel like that's part of the goal for the Apex Legends version of the new kits releasing following the in-game crossover. I got sent the RG (Real Grade) 1/144 Gundam Epyon Alter Version model kit, which is based on the Apex Legends character's color scheme to build and check out. It basically swaps out the Mobile Suit Gundam Wing crimson for teal and adds magenta accents instead of occasional yellow highlights. The result is something that honestly reminded me a lot of the color schemes for the Hatsune Miku gunpla kits I missed out on and stands out in a refreshing way.

Okay, before I start showing off photos and getting into it, this is a very straightforward build. Since I was going off of the standard RG 1/144 Gundam Epyon manual. I didn't use any acrylic markers or paints for extra accents. I also didn't have access to any sticker sheets for additional highlights. So what you're seeing here is exactly how the kit would look if you took the runners out of the box, snapped 'em together, and displayed it. Also, as my kit didn't include the wire, that isn't attached to the pommel of the Beam Sword.

The Apex Legends Gundam Epyon Alter Version is an extensive, intricate build that starts from the bottom up and involves A through H runners. Except it's even more than that, as there are doubles of the D and H ones and you get E1, E2, F1, and F2. The A runner features multiple colors and translucent parts for accents. There are so many delicate and incredibly teeny parts. Some of the more intricate or elaborate hinges and accessories on the arms and legs have notches or precise positioning you need to be aware of so everything bends properly for certain poses or transformations. Even the head is made up of so many extremely tiny pieces that are so small, I almost recommend starting to put some of the bits together while they're still attached to the runner so you have a larger surface to work with and some of the extra small parts don't slip out of your fingertips.

Basically, this is a kit that is meant for folks who are okay with a challenge and maybe splitting the experience up over a few days. While you don't need glue and everything snaps together very easily, it is time consuming! I suggest building at least a few HG (High Grade) Gundam models and maybe even a MG (Master Grade) gunpla kit before picking this up. Likewise, you are going to need a tool kit. I'm not saying you need to go super elaborate and have one with varying types of sandpaper. But at least one with a good pair of nippers, one or two types of sandpaper or files, and at least one pair of tweezers is going to be a big help here. (You can probably find one for $7-9.) What does help is you start from the bottom up (feet to legs to torso to arms and so on). You're basically building pairs of items when it comes to the legs, arms, and wings, and that repetition helps with building up skills that will help you with finishing this kit and working on future ones.

Another thing to note is that the Gundam Epyon Apex Legends Alter Version is the most expensive of the three model kits appearing as part of the crossover. (It's $65, while the other two are $49.) I feel like this is because is a transformation element to it. You can shift it into the mobile armor dragon appearance by shifting around the parts. I found that does mean it can take a bit longer to assemble, since you are accounting for the additional points of articulation and hinges that allow you to shift positions on the arms and legs. I was a little precarious about my build, as I was going off digital instructions and the left leg ended up a bit looser than I hoped once assembly is done, so I didn't flip those parts up for that position for photos. But it is possible, and the wing articulation and extending options also work wonderfully when fully assembled.

As for the final build itself, I'm really impressed with how the Gundam Epyon Apex Legends Alter Version model kit looks when finished. The color references to Alter are on point, with the black and white elements already present and the magenta and teal referencing her accessories, outfit, and hair. The Epyon Shield's Heat Rod almost already felt like a reference to the segmented accessory attached to Alter's back. I mentioned it's a color scheme similar to the Hatsune Miku Gundam crossover kits, which is true. I also feel the extra teal suits the armor better than the magenta being used as a primary color, as it really makes the darker accent colors peek through better at every point. It's really striking and eye-catching, and you can see the the contrast right away.

Perhaps the only color I do wish had been different for this Gundam Epyon model kit is the translucent purple used for the gunpla's eyes for both the standard head and dragon eyes on the feet. It does look good when combined with the others for this theme! It's a fantastic choice for the Beam Saber. The problem is that it is so muted that it really blends in with the black on the boots and head. If you shine a light in there and really look, you can make it out. But perhaps a different shade would have worked better? Like even a white that would match Alter's eyes would have worked and stood out more on the boots/dragon head part, at least.

After spending a few evenings taking my time and building the RG 1/144 Gundam Epyon Apex Legends Alter Version gunpla, I really love the look of the finished kit. The color scheme is fantastic. It really makes the layered elements stand out due to the contrasting colors in its design. Meanwhile, it does really call to mind and reference Alter, with her hair and costume hues perfectly represented. Not to mention the Epyon Shield and Heat Rod also call to mind her costume and equipment. It's a kit that looks great when finished and can sometimes feel delightfully complex as you piece it together.

The Apex Legends Gundam model kits based on Alter, Crypto, and Valkyrie will be released in September 2026, and the three gunpla are available via Premium BandaiApex Legends is available on the Switch, Switch 2, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC, and mobile devices, the Gundam crossover event is live now.

Gray Zone Warfare key art

Gray Zone Warfare's Spearhead 0.4 update has introduced some changes to how the Don't Speak quest used to work, which might cause some confusion. With all the progress being reset, all players (veterans and newbies alike) will need to complete the quest once again (if you haven't done it yet).

Gray Zone Warfare Don't Speak quest walkthrough

The main objective of the Don't Speak quest is to figure out what has happened with the friends of the Artisan vendor NPC. It can be broken down into the two following tasks.

  • Investigate what happened to the criminals near the lake.
  • Search the villa southwest of Sabai Lake and find out what happened to the rest of the criminals.

To complete the task, you'll need to investigate and gather intel from the following areas.

  • Sabai Lake Restaurant
  • Villa Vongphet

Sabai Lake Restaurant location

First, you'll want to head to the Sabai Lake Restaurant, where you'll find a note titled Death Sentence. It will be available on a green seat that's beside a white table and two white chairs. The note will have the following words on it.

Mercenary whores! This is what happens to all colalborators who betray their homeland!"

Once you interact with the note, you'll then have to reach the Villa Vongphet POI. You can find it southwest of the Sabai Lake restaurant. There will be two houses, and you need to enter the smaller one towards the northeast point of the map.

There, you'll find a notebook that will reveal the secret behind what has happened with the Artisan's friends. When you interact with the notebook, you'll be able to read the transcript, which automatically completes the Don't Speak quest.

Typing a string of text in Final Sentence

No matter what you think of the coverage, you have to tip your cap to journalists working at the largest publications in the world. At the very least, their secondary skills have to be top-notch. From quick research to fast typing, to the patience of a saint needed to conduct a phone interview, or just masters of multitasking—there's no way they are just like the rest of us, right?

Then I read an article about the typing skills of the average New York Times journo earlier this week, and my world was rocked.

They are slower than you'd think

"The average speed among the participating Times journalists was about 80 words per minute — double the average typing speed in the United States, according to the American Society of Administrative Professionals," reads the key insight of the article.

Okay, very funny, give me the actual number. Wait, what, really?

I'm not even sure where to start. 40 WPM being the average in the US was already a shocking insight to me—basically saying that a middling typist would take a whole minute to type out the quoted paragraph above. (And that's just the average! Many are even slower than this!)

The NYT article sketches a fascinating generational difference, too, one that surprisingly goes both ways. You'd expect older journalists to be on the slower side, and some did definitely lose a step when transitioning from the typewriter to the keyboard, but they nevertheless maintain above-average stats.

There's also the question of whether you had keyboarding classes or not. "Many baby boomers and Gen X-ers took keyboarding classes in high school, while some millennials had learned as early as third grade," reads the article, which made my stomach churn a little, thinking back to my single keyboarding class in Year 10. Thing is, that was a mere blip in my typing evolution.

Above average, really?

Nothing breathtaking though: I'm reliably clearing 100, maybe 110 on a good day—a figure that would apparently put me in the upper portion of the NYT newsroom—and I never thought of myself as a particularly excellent typist, except, perhaps, when I was playing Final Sentence.

Then again, I'm the sort of idiot who enjoys booting up TypeRacer from time to time, and had a genuinely good time with the aforementioned battle royale typing game. And I suppose I did spend the better part of a decade and a half writing and typing copious amounts of text? That also has to amount to something.

But if I dig deeper, surely it's a different kind of APM-fest that got me to this point. What is the environment that makes you actively chase a higher per-minute count? My mind immediately goes to computer games.

APM action

RTS fans and MOBA enjoyers will no doubt agree that the more actions you can perform in a minute, the more of a built-in advantage you have, and I imagine no other environment can provide the kind of positive feedback loop for working on accurate and speedy keystrokes than grinding games. Accuracy being the keyword here—an underappreciated part of quick typing is avoiding making errors. Instead of having to backspace four or five times and type the same thing again, you can go marginally slower and keep progressing forward at a steady pace. And nothing punishes misclicks quite like games do.

The NYT article concludes with a sobering remark, stating that "the overall typing speed in the newsroom may be trending downward. More Gen Z-ers, having grown up on tablets and smartphones, are accustomed to two-thumb texting. Many didn't learn typing skills until middle school." They quote a reporter who genuinely finds it faster to write than to type, and she therefore keeps notes by paper and pen. You can't help but feel that a set of StarCraft 2 skirmishes would have gone a long way.

Xbox Game Pass

Though Xbox was no stranger to breaking Game Pass into as many tiers as possible prior to Asha Sharma's ascension as chief executive, it would appear that the company under her direction wants to introduce yet another tier, one that only contains older first-party Microsoft titles.

As per Eurogamer (via Windows Central), datamining has shown that Xbox could be preparing to release an additional Game Pass tier, one that is far removed from all the others currently on offer. It would only give you access to first-party Microsoft games, not including day-one releases, but older ones whose prime selling points have passed.

According to dataminer redphx, who discovered this new Game Pass tier codenamed "TRION," it would include games such as Doom: Eternal, Dishonored 2, Hellblade (the first one), State of Decay 2, among others, but would also let you play live-service titles like Elder Scrolls Online as part of the package.

https://twitter.com/redphx/status/2037323830788829692

The full list is rather brief at the moment and doesn't even include many older Xbox titles, even though it appears to be a tier meant specifically to offer Microsoft's own suite of games. At any rate, it's probably going to be on the cheaper end of the spectrum, given that its limited offering pales in comparison to even the cheapest Game Pass tiers available at the moment.

Some in the replies even speculated this could be a free Game Pass tier, and while that isn't out of the question considering many other subscription services that have one of those (albeit not among gaming companies), I fail to see Microsoft, of all companies, going down that route.

However, it could be one of those so-called "free" tiers that come pre-loaded with endless, annoying advertisements that'll cut you off in the middle of gameplay to show you which Mountain Dew flavor is currently on sale in your area. Or whatever else Microsoft would want to show players.

We'll have to wait for official confirmation to actually know what this is all about, though, but I'm certainly not holding my breath for a subscription service that lets me play games from the previous decade that often sell for peanuts on platforms like Steam.

The Spire of Insight in Crimson Desert.

As Crimson Desert continues to see a ton of success 10 days after launch, players are now praising developer Pearl Abyss for how quickly it's been addressing issues since the moment the game released. With this latest patch, a lot of concerns were directly resolved, improved, or patched out, while some quirks were even embraced as official mechanics.

Soaring through the Steam charts and peaking at over 270,000 players, Crimson Desert is definitely faring a lot better than it did on launch day. It even managed to rebound its Steam reviews, now being labeled as "very positive"—a significant upgrade over its initial "mixed" reception. And all of this has to do with Pearl Abyss' patches, which have improved the game to such a degree that I find myself feeling as if I'm playing a different game, especially coming off the review build.

This latest patch added five entirely new mounts to the game, made sprinting a lot less of a hassle by reducing how much button mashing you need to do (a major complaint since release), made cooking more intuitive, made fast travel much faster, and even added certain currencies that make the upgrade process a lot cheaper and easier early on. This is just scratching the surface, though, and fans have been reacting more than positively since it came out.

Crimson Desert Official Gameplay trailer shows off beautiful world
Visual representation of players hugging the dev team. Image via Pearl Abyss

In one thread, a player said that "This is what game studios should aspire to be," praising Pearl Abyss for addressing the sprinting mechanic mentioned above. "Shout out to the devs for listening to people," said another.

Some showed that you can never please everyone despite your best efforts, as those replying to the thread said, in no small number, that they preferred how things were before the patch. I'm certain this will eventually lead to Pearl Abyss adding in optional control schemes once everything is fleshed out, allowing everyone to tailor their own fun to themselves, much as the game lets you do things at your own pace and leisure.

In another thread, a player said about Pearl Abyss that "they listen, and they deliver," as well as that it's the "best dev team ever."

"They really do. Love the changes," said another.

It's certainly amazing to see a developer team actually invest the time and effort necessary to make its game as good as it can possibly be. It's gotten to the point where so many player complaints have been fixed or just made better that the game now has an 80 percent positive rating on Steam and is slowly but surely climbing in player numbers despite being a singleplayer game that came out 10 days ago.

I love to see it, even if I myself don't agree with all the changes that have been made. Other developers need to take note.

Kliff and the Crow going toe to toe on an Abyss island in Crimson Desert.

It seems the tide is turning on Pearl Abyss' action-adventure title Crimson Desert, as it's now reached a new peak player count nearly 10 days after its initial launch. Though this is nothing new in the world of video games as a whole, singleplayer titles tend to see a dip in numbers after about a week or so on the market, but given the studio's rapid-fire quality-of-life patches, the opposite is true in this case.

Less than an hour prior to this article, Crimson Desert hit its new all-time player peak of 276,261, according to SteamDB. Having launched on March 19, Crimson Desert was met with loads of criticism and negativity, particularly due to its lackluster first few hours that scared many players away. On top of that, critics bemoaned the game's clunky and complex control system, especially on the controller, which adversely affected the overall experience.

Not long after, Pearl Abyss started to address player concerns, introducing various bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements, adding new mounts and content, and even embracing exploits by adding official animations and mechanics to them rather than patching them out altogether. This last is related to a bug that players used to fly through the air using the stab attack, which is now an official mechanic in the game.

Darkbringer sword in Crimson Desert
Crimson Desert is a gift that keeps on giving. Image via Pearl Abyss

AI content, placed in the game as placeholder assets, was also entirely removed in favor of actual human-produced artworks. That bit really stirred the hornet's nest, but it seems the team's quick reactions bought it a lot of favor with the community.

Crimson Desert now sits at an 8.5 on Metacritic and has an 80 percent positive review score on Steam out of 62,193 total reviews. It's a far cry from its on-release status in the zeitgeist, with players, particularly those in Asian countries, review-bombing the game for many reasons, though mostly for the ones mentioned above.

Crimson Desert proves two things: one, singleplayer games can and will attract more and more players post-launch if they're good enough, especially if their later parts are so interesting that people are inspired to go back and give them more time; and two, quick reactions and positive, timely changes can significantly improve a game and how it is perceived by gamers.

Too long have we suffered AAA corporate machines to release half-baked, buggy, messy games without ever bothering to fix them, and Pearl Abyss' speedy efforts definitely show just how incompetent and unworthy of our hard-earned cash some studios are.

At any rate, Crimson Desert is in an incredible state at the moment and is only going to keep growing as time goes by. A lot of new content is planned down the line, on top of many free updates, including a DLC and a potential multiplayer or co-op mode.
