With a name like My Favorite Vtuber is Scary IRL, you'd think the ensuing manga might be a comedy of sorts that focuses on how appearances can be deceiving, but that's far from the truth. Rather, the new Square Enix series from Riyo Yorima is more along the lines of Komi Can't Communicate. Instead of laughing at misconceptions, we see a person who is doing her best and a person with his own struggles attempting to support her.
Editor's Note: There will be some minor spoilers for volume 1 of the My Favorite Vtuber is Scary IRL manga below.
My Favorite Vtuber is Scary IRL is the very definition of appearances can be deceiving on so many fronts. The cover itself makes it seem like the lead heroine is a terrifying type of punk presence, but she's not! The title makes it seem like a comedy, but it isn't! I'd even say it acts as a means of investigating what the private lives are like for people who are otherwise very public and noticeable as Vtuber and food delivery person, while also keeping them very anonymous. It feels like a purposeful choice by Yorima to already encourage readers to look closer.
The unnamed heroine here is the person behind Vtuber Fuwari Hanae. She's pretty popular, but describes herself as a shut-in who isn't good at talking to people. She wants to work on herself and overcome her anxiety. The other lead is a man about the same age who is working as an Eatza delivery person for extra money. Due to the area being a bit rural, he's always delivering to her. And because of her fears and low self esteem, she's ordering everything.
As things begin, the misconceptions are being addressed head-on. The deliveryman is a bit afraid of her because she's incredibly tall, she has a resting bitch face, her behavior is quiet awkward, and she's also exceptionally pretty. So much so that when she tries to talk to him, he panics and runs. He then watches his oshi, the Vtuber Fuwari Hanae, and realizes that his customer's disposition and outreach seems to mirror the performer's. Especially since she "sounds similar." (He sort of realized the resemblance, but isn't clocking that it truly is the same person.) This is all presented in a very sympathetic fashion, and one in which we're clearly seeing the woman behind the Vtuber as a person to root for.
While everyone is kept anonymous, Riko Yorima uses the early My Favorite Vtuber is Scary IRL manga chapters to explain why the woman developed this complex and these fears, while also establishing the Eatza worker's own insecurities. She'd always been gossiped about and bullied due to her height, figure, and general appearance. So much so that she's lost jobs and is even afraid to go to a nearby store because it might be busy and she's stand taller than even men in crowds. Meanwhile, we see that the man offering to help her is familiar with that in a different way, as he's always been much shorter than everyone and was picked on for that in school. We get to see the connection form and understand why we should want to see her succeed.
I also appreciate the delicate approach Riyo Yorima uses when it comes to the Eatza delivery guy actually helping the person behind the Vtuber make progress with her goals. One of the early ones in the chapter involves the two going to a convenience store together. Even just walking out of the apartment complex and to the street is daunting to her, due to her anxiety going into overdrive and envisioning all the negative attention she might draw. The way the man responds to her fear and the direction that rest of that trip takes feels really compassionate and understanding.
My Favorite Vtuber is Scary IRL feels like it could end up being a very sweet manga showcasing personal growth of its leads. The person behind the Vtuber is really hoping to grow as a person and overcome her fears. The delivery driver comes to a point where he wants to help her for her, and not because she "reminds" him of his favorite Vtuber. While there is fanservice, it also feels like it could be a very considerate series.
Volume 1 of My Favorite Vtuber is Scary IRL, and Square Enix will release the second volume of the manga on June 9, 2025.

The Parasitism 5 contract is a priority task to complete for the Sekiguchi faction in Marathon, and it's a collection of three different activities.
Parasitism 5 is the final contract in the series, and this guide will help you complete all three tasks.
Table of contents
Marathon Parasitism 5 contract walkthrough
The Parasitism 5 contract can be broken down into three tasks.
How to extract biotic sample from Sparkleaf in Bio-Research
For the first task, head to the Bio-Research location in the northern area of the map. You'll first need to pick up Sparkleaf that can grow among vegetation.
They don't have a specific location, but they're fairly common. Once you find a Sparkleaf, head to the marked location in the image below.
You'll find an extraction machine to extract a biotic sample from the Sparkleaf (place it in its inventory and then wait for a few seconds).
How to synthesize SIMbiont in Quarantine and inject yourself
Pick up the sample and head to the southwest part of the map, where you'll find the Quarantine POI. I have marked the location where you'll find a small room with the terminal inside (will be highlighted by a quest marker when you're at the marked spot).
Access the Synthesizer and place the sample to get the SIMbiont. Inject yourself with the item and then wait for 1 minute and 30 seconds. You'll need to survive a UESC onslaught as the SIMbiont integrates with your shell. Once you manage to survive the 90 seconds, safely exfil from the map, and you'll complete the final Parasitism contract in Marathon.

Parasitism 4 contract is one of the several priority tasks you get to complete for the Sekiguchi faction in Marathon, and this one has three tasks to complete.
Once again, you have to complete all three tasks in a single run. Let's find out how to proceed with the Parasitism 4 contact.
Table of contents
Marathon Parasitism 4 contract guide
The Parasitism 4 contract can be broken down into three parts.
How to download research clearance at the terminal in Maintenance
The first task takes place at the Maintenance POI located in the south of Dire Marsh. Enter the main building and get to the second floor. Once you're on the second level, move towards the south, and you'll find an office (refer to the following image).
Enter the office room, and you'll find the terminal. Once you download the research clearance, the doors will be locked. To open the doors, clear all UESC enemies that spawn at the location. Next, you need to head to the Bio-Research location.
How to extract Synthsilk Sample from your shell in Bio-Research
Head to the marked location on the image above, and you'll find the Bio-Research building. You can take the ladder and break the glass windows to enter. If you do that, the terminal will be to your immediate left. If you take the stairs, get to the second floor, and you'll find the terminal.
Interact with it (the dispenser) to get the Synthsilk Sample.
To complete the contract, you have to find a DCON and add the sample to its inventory. There are three DCONs located on the Dire Marsh map. The nearest one from Bio-Research will be the one located at the outskirts of the Greenhouse POI.
Once the DCON sends back the item, you'll have completed Parasitism 4 and come one step closer to finishing the series of contracts.

There are some games and franchises that have almost become synonymous with gaming as a whole, or at least certain parts of it. Half-Life stands for technological advancement, and Doom carries weight among shooters, but neither would truly be possible without the advent of Quake, a series that singlehandedly revolutionized first-person and 3D games.
The last Quake game to come out was Quake Champions, a free-to-play online shooter released into early access in 2017. Its development was completed by 2022, and since then, we haven't heard much of the series compared to its id Software brethren, Doom and Wolfenstein (outside of remasters). Neither of the latter would have been possible without Quake, nor would much of the first-person shooter ecosystem, and its absence from mainstream gaming is a tragic story of how you can start a trend that ends up overshadowing you.
Nevertheless, id Software at least focused its teams on creating amazing FPS experiences, building on Quake's legacy and trying to revive it through a F2P live-service model, which went as well as you'd expect. The game barely sees any activity nowadays, and the last time I tried it, it didn't really land as well as I would have hoped.
But it seems the company hasn't yet given up on this classic franchise.
A new trademark was registered by id Software's parent company, ZeniMax Media. It's a stylized text saying QUAKE in all caps, with a font similar to the one the old games used. That usual logo that accompanies Quake everywhere, the semicircle with a nail, isn't in this particular trademark filing, but I have no doubt in my mind that id Software will use it when the time comes.
The trademark was filed on March 3, some five days prior to this article, so it's relatively new.
It could be that the company is gearing up for a showcase of some kind, perhaps even preparing to reveal a new Quake game to the world in the coming months. GDC is taking place between March 9 and 13, and while that's not a place usually associated with huge video game announcements, there might be a small chance that ZeniMax will reveal Quake there.
A more likely candidate would be Pax East later this month, or even the Summer Games Fest in June. At any rate, I expect ZeniMax will have at least something Quake-related to show us, even if it doesn't turn out to be an actual sequel.
The design of the trademark also implies this could be some kind of hard or soft reboot, allowing the franchise to start anew. Since Quake has always been tied to its multiplayer side, we could be looking at a more singleplayer-focused approach this time around. After all, singleplayer "boomer shooters" have produced hits left and right over the past few years, and ZeniMax itself has scored big with its rebooted Doom titles.
Games like DUSK and Ultrakill are quite similar, and both achieved major success through their focus on solo play and indirect storytelling.
Whatever the case, something is cooking behind the scenes, and if there is one franchise that truly deserves the extra attention, it is Quake. We owe a lot to that series, not least because the biggest shooter of all time, Counter-Strike, was built on Valve's adaptation of the Quake Engine.
It's a huge name, and it'd be a great shame to have it surrendered to memory, especially considering how competent id Software is at reviving these old FPS franchises.

Highguard's premature death made me think of Fortnite and how different things were back in the day. Fortnite is ubiquitous nowadays, and, having been released a decade ago, many of the people playing it aren't aware of its early history because they weren't even born when it came out. Still, it wasn't the immediate smash hit that most seemingly know it as.
Humble beginnings
Fortnite Battle Royale was an immediate blockbuster, yes, but that was not its first iteration. It actually began life as Fortnite: Save The World, an evolved take on the tower defense genre. Despite Fortnite Battle Royale's massive success, many could never shake the thought that the building mechanics in Fortnite didn't belong, and that's why so many love the zero build mode. Well, they're actually a leftover from back when players built forts to keep hordes of zombies out.
Though Fortnite Battle Royale serves as a great example of a success story in games, it's no less a scary display of how something completely void of meaning can thrive. Save the World did well, with over 500 thousand units sold upon release, but it faced one problem: PUBG, which got the battle royale frenzy to never-before-seen heights.
Epic had the means to just shut Fortnite down and come up with a new title to compete with PUBG, but it had the restraint to rethink its strategy and greatly overhaul Fortnite to overcome its own shortcomings and innovate. Interestingly, Epic never really killed Save the World, but it's kept as a paid mode, as opposed to the more commercially successful free mode, so its playerbase is unlikely to go anywhere but down.
From Rainbow Six Siege to Quake Champions: not everything has to be Highguard
An even better example was Rainbow Six Siege, which enjoyed a pretty underwhelming release, in part because of multiple gameplay issues and also because it wasn't chasing the BR golden goose. Rainbow Six 6 is still a thing nowadays, a rather big deal, even, with lots of cool expensive crossovers, like the newly-revealed Solid Snake joining its operatives roster.
Sadly, the comeback of R6 is documented mostly by forum comments and independent blog posts, perhaps because even we are too focused on failure. Still, as someone who was baffled to experience its rise from the ashes, I can confirm it was a beautiful thing. Interestingly enough, Ubisoft didn't even completely retool the game into something else. It rather trusted the product, the team, and worked hard on what they had into a fantastic competitive shooter experience.
And sure, Ubisoft and Epic Games are much bigger backers than most original shooters will get, but even Epic Games axed the return of Unreal Tournament, once one of the biggest shooters on the planet, which actually had a pretty neat-looking remake going back in 2014.
We talk a lot of crap about Bethesda, but it's really cool that, even though Quake Champions never got the muscle to hit it big since it became playable in 2017, the company still has a small team updating the game and keeping it alive for a fanbase that reaches roughly 250 concurrent players on average. Because, like, the game owns.
Do you think any publisher nowadays would have this kind of restraint, or are we destined to see a bunch of big releases immediately crashing and burning, and causing so many possibly great games and jobs to go to waste? Here's hoping no one at Microsoft reads this glowing reminder on the existence of Quake Champions and decides it's time for some more axjustments.

The Defect is one of the three older characters who have made their return to Slay the Spire 2, and its new version is significantly better than the older one.
Fundamentally, the Defect still works its magic via elemental orbs and programming, but its abilities have changed to match the lore of the game. Let's look at how to build it up from scratch, and what type of decks you can run.
Table of contents
How to use Defect in Slay the Spire 2
The Defect is one of those rarer characters that offers you the freedom to go for different deck archetypes. All decks will revolve around Evoke and Channel to efficiently use the orbs. If your deck lacks synergy, the Defect won't be an effective character to use.
However, you can keep your deck options open and change them if required. Not only are the Orb mechanics fun to manipulate, but you can build them up to do more damage. The Defect also provides you with healing options when required.
Best Defect deck in Slay the Spire 2
There are different decks to run with the Defect, but the most consistent one for me has been based around Claw. The Claw is a 0-Energy attack item that keeps increasing its damage the more times it's used. While the onus is to fill your deck with the Claw cards whenever possible, you have to build your deck around them.

In the video game space, we are constantly reminded that we do not actually own the things we buy but are rather indefinitely "renting" them, that is, until our corporate overlords decide to pull the plug. One way for publishers to protect digital products thrown out in the wild is DRMs, i.e., digital rights management software that runs in the background of each proprietary game or software to ensure you "own" it.
DRMs have existed for a long while, but it wouldn't be until the last few years that they'd really catch on in the gaming industry, particularly due to the sharp increase in piracy as more and more people gained access to online gaming. Capcom has been one of the worst offenders when it comes to DRM use, as it is known for stacking several DRMs on top of each other to ensure its games are never cracked, caring little about the incredible performance effects these copyright protection solutions tend to have.
For older games in particular, DRM usually doesn't pay off, and Steam's own protection is good enough once your title is past its prime. But Capcom doesn't think so, as it introduced Enigma DRM to protect Resident Evil 4 Remake years after it came out, since its Denuvo license likely expired (and because it probably didn't want to pay extra for a game that doesn't sell much anymore).
However, a month or so after putting it into the game, Capcom silently removed the DRM, which was there not only to keep the game from being cracked, but also to circumvent any sort of modding that Capcom doesn't like. Now, however, with Enigma DRM gone, modding is once again (mostly) free in Resident Evil 4.
And not only that, players can expect a significant uptick in performance, especially if they had CPU-related issues while playing Resident Evil 4. DRMs have to run actively alongside the game itself, which often proves taxing for many CPUs, particularly older and weaker ones.
The decision to remove the DRM also likely came due to player complaints, as there was no real reason to put it into the title in the first place. It only hampered performance for paying customers, and since the game has been cracked for a while, pirates were getting literally a better deal than those who dished out the dosh to play the game legitimately.
"Glad they listened. That DRM change was only hurting those who purchased the game in the first place," one user wrote on Reddit. Another said they had bought the game but wound up pirating it anyway since the DRM was causing problems for them that should not have been there.
"Who would've thought it was a good idea to put in a DRM on a 2-year-old game?" another user wondered.
And who, indeed.
If a game is cracked, even with high-level protection like Denuvo, then I do not see the point in putting any sort of extra layer on it. It's already in the ether, and no amount of patches or fixes will be able to stop pirates from enjoying the version that they had forced themselves into. Paying customers should not have to suffer, but of course odds are that Capcom didn't care about pirates at all.
As I mentioned above, Capcom does not love mods in its games and likens them to cheats. Way back in Resident Evil Village, you could get yourself a ban on the game if you used mods, especially those that Capcom had a particular disdain for. Enigma DRM was a major barrier for modding in RE4R, and it was likely put there as an extension of the company's anti-modding stance.
Thankfully, though, we now can freely modify the game however we see fit, having to only deal with Steam's own DRM, which protects games as much as asking pirates not to crack them would.

Whether or not you believe in divine providence, the sudden upsurge of indie games seems to me as if some higher power decided that enough was enough and gave us all of these amazing, passionate developers who strive only to create art and to stick it to the man, whether on purpose or not.
And Slay the Spire 2 is one of those games, an indie title that came seemingly out of nowhere, building on top of its predecessor's positive legacy and ending up 10x-ing its peak player count, proving that all you need to do is make a good game, and it'll find a massive audience. Compared to STS1's peak player count of 57,025, Slay the Spire 2 has hit 574,638 over the weekend, a number that'd be the pride and joy of a billion-dollar corporate giant, let alone a small indie team.
The deckbuilding roguelike is also closing in on another indie sensation, Hollow Knight: Silksong, itself peaking at 587,150 and even crashing Steam at launch. Odds are that Slay the Spire 2 will be able to beat it out, though it has already been tallied among the top 20 most-played Steam games of all time.
The game opened to 177,000 concurrent players during the initial hours of its launch, sharply climbing to over 400,000 only a day later. This meteoric rise could keep going, though the curve has started plateauing a bit, unless it resurges by the evening.
STS2 has a 96 percent positive rating on Steam out of 24,500 reviews, almost tied with the previous game's 97 percent. Of course, it's still too early to draw conclusions for user reviews, but it's nonetheless safe to say that this game is being overwhelmingly well-received by fans and newcomers alike.
Indie games have become the golden standard of quality experiences as the AAA industry continues to release failure after failure, often spending incredible amounts of money only to shut its games down not long after launch. A recent example of a huge, experienced, corporate-backed title completely missing the mark would be Highguard, a game that is set to be permanently shuttered in only four days as of this article.
Previously, we had Warner Brothers losing hundreds of millions of dollars on failed gaming projects, sinking so much money that it slowly but surely scaled back its gaming enterprise. Concord was another massive catastrophe and probably one of Sony's biggest fumbles to date, while Sony-backed Marathon is also being attacked for failing to captivate a broader audience, despite solid launch numbers.
Whichever way you cut it, indies are the ultimate kings of video games in 2026. Numbers like these were unfathomable just a few years ago, but nowadays are so common that it's not even newsworthy anymore. And that's a good thing, because art should be rewarded and passionate developers given the attention and funds they deserve to continue enriching global culture with their amazing creative works.

Though it saddens me to admit this, we might actually be reaching the end of traditional console generations. People have been speculating about this apocalyptic event for years now, but it might be high time to admit it. Now, new leaked information about Project Helix, Microsoft's next "console," only helps to solidify that idea.
Prominent Xbox and Microsoft leaker SnakerSO wrote on the NeoGAF forums that Project Helix will not aim to compete with traditional consoles like the potential PlayStation 6, but will be used to prepare Xbox to exit the hardware market altogether. This is because, as they allege, Project Helix won't behave as a traditional console with its own proprietary platform and standard that devs would adhere to, but rather run on Windows and only "emulate" a console experience.
"This is basically a PC that uses the Windows Full Screen Experience (FSE) that we just saw in the Rog Ally X to emulate a console experience," SneakerSO said.
"The 'native' Xbox SKU, that had an updated build target that developers were building games for, that's going away, or rather - there's no Xbox Helix build target, it's just a UWP build. You're just shipping a game for the Windows Store," they added.
That would be a very dramatic move from Xbox, which would essentially forfeit its console market to Sony, which will almost certainly be following up the PlayStation 5 with a new and improved traditional console using proprietary software and hardware.
Since the Rog Ally X (the Xbox variant) already helped Microsoft to try and cover some of the mobile space that Valve has dominated since releasing its Steam Deck, it could be that Xbox is targeting the same audience as the forthcoming Steam Machine, itself an upgraded and integrated version of the Deck, meant almost exclusively to run Steam games and to expand Valve's own ecosystem.
SneakerSO implied as much since they said that Project Helix is "a set-top box version of the Rog Ally X, only it's been engineered by Microsoft."
"[It] will be pretty expensive and is being made for a very niche audience," they added.
The Steam Machine itself has been speculated to cost up to $900, and considering the current situation surrounding DRAM prices, it could very well surpass that figure. Of course, Valve stands to operate it at a loss to forward sell its own games and ecosystem, but even then it'd be rather pricy. If what SneakerSO says is true, then we could be looking at a very expensive Project Helix that is far removed from what Microsoft offered through the Series S and X.
It'd also further indicate that Microsoft has no plans to even try to compete against Sony, whose position in the console market is stronger than ever.
Furthermore, SneakerSO thinks Microsoft is pushing this on purpose, as it'd serve as an excuse to pull out of the hardware manufacturing business entirely. "They know what the forecast for it is, they are under no illusion that this is going to be some Xbox 360 moment," the leaker said.
Xbox under Phil Spencer pushed strongly for multiplatformity and subscription-based services, all the while pulling away from first-party exclusivity and console-selling game development. Everything Xbox has put out was simultaneously available on both PC and Xbox, oftentimes also on Steam, arguably a competing platform.
This, combined with day-one Game Pass launches, severely damaged sales of several AAA Xbox releases, with one of its latest and biggest games, The Outer Worlds 2, seeing only 18,000 players on Steam on launch day.
What exactly Xbox is thinking and what it wants to do in the future seems rather unclear, but if what SneakerSO says becomes reality, then we're in for a very different, very lonely 10th generation of consoles, one that would be dominated by Sony.
