Kotaku Monday, February 28, 2022 9:00 PM ![]() Elden Ring: it's good, people are saying, but it's good with certain caveats, like the fact you can't properly pause the game. This isn't anything new for Souls-like titles, of course, but if Elden Ring's hype means this is the first of them that you're checking out (or if you've got older and/or your circumstances… |

Kotaku Monday, February 28, 2022 7:00 PM ![]() The most obvious way to tell if Elden Ring is a Souls game isn't its satisfyingly difficult gameplay loop or incomprehensible lore. No, the true test of Elden Ring's inherent Souls-ness lies with the messaging system, in which players can leave behind asynchronous notes to give their fellow Tarnished tips about… |
PCGamesN Monday, February 28, 2022 7:05 PM ![]() The game industry continues to build charity initiatives to support Ukraine as Russia's invasion of the country continues. A number of individual studios are donating the proceeds from certain titles to support relief efforts in Ukraine, and in the spirit of the Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality and the Bundle for Palestinian Aid, a group of indie developers are putting together a massive charity bundle. The Bundle for Ukraine is still calling for submissions, and the organisers currently hope to have it live for purchase on Monday, March 7. Funds will be split between the International Medical Corps and Voices of Children. Like the bundles mentioned above, this one will be available via Itch.io. As organiser Brandon Sheffield explains on Twitter, this bundle was initially intended as a joint effort supporting both relief efforts in Ukraine and supporting trans youth in Texas. However, in an effort to "not dilute the messaging", the latter cause will be supported with a separate bundle likely to launch in April. |
PCGamesN Monday, February 28, 2022 6:12 PM ![]() PCs have been capable of running very playable versions of NES games for decades via emulation. But while emulators have practically become indistinguishable from the real thing for many players, they can always become more accurate. That's why MetalNES is replicating the functions of Nintendo's classic console at a transistor level - a process that's far too much for your PC to handle. MetalNES is the creation of Icer Addis, who's already well-known in the emulation scene as the creator of NESticle - a very popular NES emulator originally released in the late 90s. As explained in the GitHub release, MetalNES is a "transistor level NES-001 simulation", meaning it simulates the actual physical characteristics of the hardware itself, right down to the voltage flowing into the parts. NES emulators already replicate the hardware at a fairly low level, but going for full transistor level emulation is an order of magnitude more complicated. The emulator is currently only available for macOS ("for now"), so I haven't had the chance to try it out for myself, but early reports from users say the emulator is able to render a frame or two in the space of about two or three minutes, based on the power of your hardware. |
PCGamesN Monday, February 28, 2022 5:06 PM ![]() As Russia's invasion continues, the game industry is finding ways to show support to Ukraine. Players are showing solidarity with in-game demonstrations, and developers are finding ways to support relief efforts in Ukraine. The latest such charity plan comes from SCS Software, the studio behind American Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator 2. "Even though our teams are multinational, the core of the company has its roots in the city of Prague in the Czech Republic," the devs say in a blog post. "The history of our country carries a memory of sad happenings that resonate in very similar ways with what has been happening in Ukraine in the recent days, weeks, and months. We see a very close parallel with what happened here back in 1938 and 1968, and it leaves us deeply concerned and full of emotions and pain that the modern world has to witness such horrific times again." SCS is currently at work on a new bit of cosmetic DLC called the Ukrainian Paint Jobs Pack. The devs are "racing" to bring it to the Steam store, and 100% of the income will be donated to "those in need". PCGamesN Monday, February 28, 2022 5:58 PM ![]() From Software's latest game is out, and it's fantastic - just check out our Elden Ring review for a whole lot more words on why. But despite that excellence, it's got a range of technical issues, particularly on PC. The devs are continuing to work on performance problems, but tonight we're getting a bit of maintenance to "help improve some multiplayer functions". Elden Ring servers go down for one hour of maintenance across all platforms tonight. On PC, that window is February 28 at 8pm PST / 11pm EST, or March 1 at 4am GMT. (For our console friends, Xbox maintenance takes place one hour earlier at 7pm PST / 10pm EST / 3am GMT, and PlayStation maintenance takes place two hours earlier at 6pm PST / 9pm EST / 2am GMT.) There's no word on exactly what issues this maintenance will address, and Elden Ring's multiplayer problems have been inconsistent across platforms. On PlayStation, everything usually works except for the bloodstains that show how other players died. PC and Xbox have both had intermittent issues with many features. PCGamesN Monday, February 28, 2022 5:57 PM ![]() Elden Ring can be difficult, sure, but have you tried beating one of its bosses using a Ring Fit Adventure controller? While the new PC game has only been out for a few days, someone has already managed to do just that. The accomplishment was the highlight of controller modder Louis 'Super Louis 64' Hamilton's recent two-hour Elden Ring Adventure stream, which saw him beat Bloodhound Knight Darriwil on his first go. Hamilton has his controller set up to work if he's jogging on the spot, while healing requires him to squat - it certainly appears to make for a physically taxing stream. The broadcast starts with Hamilton jogging on his trampoline so he can use a controller to set up a Vagabond. The tutorial area goes pretty well, though the Soldier of Godrick does manage to land a few blows. Sadly, though, an open-world boss known as the Tree Sentinel proves too much for the streamer to handle, so he tootles off to enjoy some of the game's scenery instead. Siliconera Monday, February 28, 2022 9:00 PM The update for the offline version of Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road has been delayed again. The official Japanese Twitter account announced that the patch would require "a little more time." The 5.0.0 update was initially slated to release during Winter 2021 and will now release at an unspecified date. According to Square Enix, one of the reasons for the delay is the large number of new scenarios coming with the new update. Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road is a prequel story that follows antagonist Xehanort, starting with the character's youth. The announcement tweet includes various images from the game. https://twitter.com/KHDR_PR/status/1498130845047132160?s=20&t=qyiXCzm7We2xWM7ZGMNDnA The upcoming 5.0.0 update is the final story update for Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road offline. Square Enix initially planned to release the update in September 2021. However, due to various issues, the company had postponed the update indefinitely. Prior to the most recent delay, Square Enix had announced the aforementioned Winter 2021 window. Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road originally released globally in June 2020 as part of the existing Kingdom Hearts: Union x mobile app. A year later, Square Enix announced that it would shut down the Union x app. After the shutdown, players would be unable to access Dark Road via Union x. Players would instead be able to enjoy the story through a new, offline version of the game. Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road is available to play offline on iOS and Android devices. There is no confirmed release date for the final 5.0.0 update. The post Kingdom Hearts Dark Road Update Delayed Again appeared first on Siliconera. |
Siliconera Monday, February 28, 2022 7:00 PM miHoYo, the company behind Genshin Impact and Honkai Impact 3, contributed $65 million to Energy Singularity, which is a company that works on nuclear fusion technology. miHoYo led the round of financing alongside other corporations such as NIO Capital. [Thanks, Daniel "ZhugeEx" Ahmad!] As part of efforts to lower carbon emissions, some companies and governments conduct research into renewable energy. Nuclear fusion is one of those options. While Tokamak devices are not new, small and commercialized versions of the machine could mean that more individuals and businesses would have access to clean energy. A Tokamak device is a machine that uses magnets to confine plasma particles. This then leads to fusion (and energy), thus nuclear fusion. There are a large number of Tokamak devices in history. France has been constructing the ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor), and it will finish in 2025. This is not the first time that miHoYo donated money to a research institution, and nuclear fusion is not its only interest. Ahmad also noted, miHoYo teamed up with the Shanghai Jiaotong University Ruijin Hospital in 2021. The project focuses on integrating technology with the human brain in order to treat conditions such as depression. In 2021, miHoYo earned over $1 billion in revenue from Genshin Impact. Genshin Impact is available on the PS4, PS5, Windows PC, and mobile devices. The post miHoYo Contributed $65 Million for Nuclear Fusion Research appeared first on Siliconera. |
