Call of Duty, the first-person shooter once based on historical events, is pulling a very ahistorical skin after a concept artist accused the game's publisher of plagiarizing a design of theirs.      Stardew Valley mod turns mining into a proper money-making venture

A new Stardew Valley mod actually makes mining worth the time, even if you end up with what normally counts as trash or unwanted artifacts. The mod, which was downloaded over 3,000 times since it first debuted at the end of July, tweaks sell prices in the life game for pretty much everything you find down in the mines so they're much more favorable to you. That includes minerals, but more importantly, it also covers Dwarf Scrolls, artifacts, and monster parts.

Dwarf Fortress has a lot going on beneath the surface - that's true of the game conceptually, since it's always been about watching scores of complex systems interacting beneath an ASCII-based graphics design.      The Sims 4 High School Years quirk is making classes a bit grim

The Sims 4 High School years was off to a rough start, and while Maxis ironed out most of the life game's new bugs, including the very concerning incest bug, players are still running into a few issues – namely that everyone's dying in school. The game replaces dead NPCs with other random Sims, so it's not a massive issue outside planning relationships with the departed. There's no denying it adds a rather an unpleasant atmosphere to the daily routine, though. Going to school every day is bad enough, but seeing your teacher fall down dead is enough to change anyone's moodlet permanently.

Apex Legends season 14 pushes to record Steam player count

Apex Legends season 14 is off to a roaring start, with new content pushing the FPS game to an all-time high Steam player count of over half a million concurrent players. New character Vantage leads up the charge with her adorable bat companion, Echo, and players have been flocking to try her out on the reworked Kings Canyon map in the battle royale game.

The SteamDB records for Apex Legends show that it reached a peak concurrent player count of 511,676 players on August 10, one day after the launch of Hunted, the game's fourteenth season. Along with Vantage, the new season also includes a much-anticipated increase to the Apex Legends level cap, as well as some major changes to the Kings Canyon map.

It also brings an end to one of the game's longest-lasting features, the gold self-revive knockdown shield, which has been removed from the game entirely. This means an end to self-revive in Apex Legends, meaning that you'll no longer be able to pull out those clutch solo moments after getting yourself back up from an unfortunate knockdown.

Want to know what the Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak Lucent Nargacuga weakness is? The first free update to the already colossal RPG game's expansion is now available, coming with four new monsters. Well, they're all variants on existing foes, so "new" comes with a caveat. To unlock the Lucent Nargacuga fight, you must first beat Gaismagorm to unlock the post-game, then reach Master Rank 10. You'll get a quest to hunt a Seething Bazelgeuse, then requests to deal with both a Gold Rathian and Silver Rathalos. Once you've dealt with all three of those, Lucent Nargacuga will reveal itself, a returning variant we've not seen since Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.

Before you head into the fight, you need to equip ice weapons as they are the best for exploiting the Lucent Nargacuga weakness. We highly recommend you check out our Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak weapon tier list, as some focus more on elemental damage than others.

Diablo Immortal PvP immunity hacks seem to be ruining games

If you're playing Diablo Immortal PvP, keep a close eye out - some players are reporting the appearance of what looks to be immunity hacks keeping their opponents from dying. Some people taking part in the RPG game's PvP modes have run into players that appear to take minimal or no damage from their attacks, meaning that they become almost impossible to kill.

A video posted to the Diablo Immortal subreddit appears to show such an incident taking place. In the clip, a team of four players in a party together are shown trying to attack an enemy player who is wandering around the map. However, only a limited number of their attacks seem to damage the opponent, and they are unable to kill them as they pop heals through the attacks. Ultimately, the situation is only resolved once the troublesome player appears to give up and go AFK, allowing the squad to finally finish them off.

Several comments report running into similar issues. One says that a monk player on their server also took advantage of similar methods, but was kicked from their immortal clan afterwards for doing so. Others query whether connection or lag issues could be at fault, but the enemy character appears to walk in deliberate directions without being affected by any stuns, which suggests that this isn't down to latency.

Silence your PC with the latest be quiet! components

Anyone who owned a base PS4 will know the pain of unreasonably loud fans. It's not uncommon for hardware-intensive games to push a gaming machine to its limits, and it's when these high-end games get booted up that your PC's components begin to struggle. This can cause fans to speed up, spinning so fast that they begin to emit an annoying whirring sound – it can get so bad that it starts to resemble an aircraft taking off.

When you're trying to get immersed in a story game or outperform your opponents in an online match, the last thing you want is loud fans distracting you. This is also incredibly irritating for anyone you happen to share your gaming space with. Luckily, there is a solution for gamers who want some peace and quiet. Meet be quiet!

German parts manufacturer be quiet! specialises in components that emit as little ambient noise as possible. Starting out as a distribution company for PC components under the name Listan GmbH, the firm soon noticed a gap in the market for silent components. In 2002 the be quiet! brand was launched. The company has continued to innovate throughout its history, expanding from power supplies to water coolers and PC cases.

The best free VPNs for PC in 2022

If you want the benefits of a VPN, but don't have the room in your budget for another subscription, you'll probably be happy to discover the best free VPNs. There are a wealth of free options available from a wide range of providers, but it's worth keeping in mind that they won't be quite as robust as their paid counterparts.

Of course, before diving into the wonderful world of free VPNs, it's important to learn how each works before trusting it with your data. Naturally, even if a VPN is free, it still costs its provider money to run, so it's important to identify any potential hidden costs or caveats associated with seemingly free services. This includes agreeing to your gaming PC becoming an exit node for other users, intrusive browser ads, and the risk of your data being logged and sold to third parties.

That said, there are still free VPNs out there that can provide a great service without paying a monthly fee. While you'll still need to pay to experience the best VPN subscription and all its intrinsic benefits, you should still be able to find a good balance between usability and security when using a free version of a VPN.

     Fastest VPN for maximum performance

When seeking to protect your privacy on the internet, it is reasonable to ask the question 'Which is the fastest VPN?' After all, while VPNs can help you to speed up your connection speeds by stopping your internet service providers from limiting your bandwidth, that benefit is rather nullified if the VPN itself has particularly slow download speeds.

So which is the fastest VPN? Well, to answer that question, it's best to look at the download speeds of the major VPN providers. This can be most easily quantified in megabits per second (Mbit/s).

However, one problem that we face in determining the fastest VPN is that, by their very nature, VPNs use a huge number of different servers, and different servers can be faster or slower than one another. Two people using the same VPN provider, for example, might experience different connection speeds because one of them uses a server in Japan, while another uses a server in Argentina.

Overwatch loot box sales will end after Anniversary Remix 3

The end is in sight for Overwatch loot box sales, as we now have an end date for the current microtransaction format in the FPS game. It's almost time for the original 6v6 Overwatch to shut its doors, as Blizzard prepares to transition to its new 5v5 format on the Overwatch 2 release date. While we already knew the model was changing to feature an Overwatch 2 battle pass for its new format as a free game, we now have a date on the calendar.

In the article announcing the Overwatch Anniversary Remix Vol. 3 event which is ongoing from August 9 - 30, Blizzard states that "Loot boxes will no longer be available for sale after the end of the Anniversary Remix Vol. 3 event on August 30." It does note, however, that players will be able to earn standard loot boxes after the end of the event by playing, which will be automatically opened prior to the launch of Overwatch 2 if you have not already done so yourself.

Given the slightly vague wording, we have reached out to Blizzard for confirmation that this applies to all loot boxes and not just ones from the event - although it isn't long now until the Overwatch 2 release date is upon us, so it would make sense for loot box sales to draw to a close soon. If so, this event offers players one final chance to roll the dice on any items they might still be missing.

VPN free trial – which are the best ones out there?

So you want to try a VPN free trial before you decide to invest financially in your internet privacy? That makes sense, and, indeed, might be a very smart approach. After all, you don't want to pay for a VPN and then quickly find out that it can't do whatever you specifically had in mind for it.

The problem is that a lot of the big ones don't actually offer a VPN free trial. Big names like NordVPN or ExpressVPN don't give any kind of free trial, instead they use 30-day money-back guarantees, where you're entitled to a full refund if you change your mind within the first month, but that's not so good for those who don't like the stress of having to make a cancellation.

For that reason, we've gathered together all of the best VPN free trials, giving you a chance to dip your toe into the ocean of internet privacy before deciding whether or not you want to submerge yourself entirely. We've picked out a selection of five VPN providers which let you enjoy a genuine free trial.

I'll be posting a more performance-and-hardware-focused guide to it later this week, but in the meantime I called up Jurjen Katsman, founder and senior director of development at Nixxes, and Mike Fitzgerald, core technology director at Insomniac, for a chat about how Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered makes the jump to PC.

When Sony revealed that Spider-Man Remastered was headed to PC earlier this year, I became fixated with the idea that the game would potentially work on the Steam Deck. I mean, it worked on a base PS4, right? By my understanding the Steam Deck is basically just a PS4 with a screen slapped on it, so surely portable Spider-Manning wasn't an unrealistic thing to expect?

After spending a few days testing out the game on the Deck I'm thrilled to confirm that Spider-Man Remastered plays great on Valve's handheld with only a few very minor caveats. Hooray! I can finally punch a Vulture in my back garden without getting shouted at by local bird protection services. What a time to be alive.

I've played a lot of Spider-Man games. To this day I nurture the belief that all tutorials should be narrated by Bruce Campbell. I even played Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, which had four different web-dudes and later inspired the Spider-Verse storyline in the comics. Point is, I'm standing on pretty solid ground to judge Spider-Man games. Marvel's Spider-Man, originally released onto Sonyboxes in 2018, is finally coming to PC in a Remastered form, and let me tell you: it is a great Spidey game.

You know Spider-Man. He's a dude named Peter Parker who was bitten by a radioactive spider and can now climb up walls and punch criminals really well. Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered lets you roleplay being Spidey against the backdrop of a big, living New York city. It is, if you'll excuse the pun, amazing. Now, is it the best Spidey game? Nah. I reckon that's its spin-off/sequel Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, but that's not on PC yet. This means Marvel's Spider-Man gets to be the best wall-crawler game on PC for another few months, which isn't a bad consolation prize.

A bright sun heralds the start of day 37 for CultPaperShotgun. Katharine wakes up and immediately sets to work cleaning up the mountains of poop and vomit puddles left over from the previous night's revelries. As she works, she spies her good friend Alice B harvesting cauliflowers from the cult's garden, trying to keep as far as possible away from the (now slightly rotting) corpse of Graham that lays nearby. A cluster of other followers are busy dancing around a shrine in the centre of the village, but they all stop to witness a fight between the two oldest members of the cult - Alice0 and Liam. Ritual combat of the elderly is a staple of CultPaperShotgun, and as Alice0 delivers the final blow to an ailing Liam, cries of euphoria reverberate about the camp as his spirit (and chunks of flesh) are donated to the cause.

Where am I in all this, you ask? I, the Lamb, the glorious leader of our cult, the holy vessel of Death itself, and the sworn enemy of the Bishops of the Old Faith that are destined soon to die by my blade? I'm kicking back at a nearby camp, enjoying a spot of fishing and a friendly game of Knucklebones.

Some of the early trailers for Forspoken, a Squeenix action-adventure/RPG epic coming in January, suggested portentious world-saving stuff. This is a different vibe to a clip shared on Forspoken's offical Twitter this week, which featured main character Frey Holland doing a "Yup, that's me!" kind of elevator pitch for the game. A lot of people on the birdsite took an instant, vehement dislike to Frey's dialogue, and were just as instantly sure who to blame for the peachy keen quiplashing, even if by proxy. Yes, Joss Whedon strikes again.

You know when a game instantly charms the socks off you the moment you first clap eyes on it? Point and click puzzler Lost In Play is one of those games for me. Its vibrant cartoon visuals immediately caught my attention when I first sampled its Steam Next Fest demo earlier in the year, and I'm happy to report that the full game, out today, is just as captivating as it was back then.

It tells the tale of Toto and Gal, a pair of rambunctious siblings who end up far from home after getting lost inside a fantasy world of their own imagining. If they don't find a way back before nightfall, though, they'll be stuck there forever. A classic kids adventure story, in other words, but one that really relishes in its own sense of playfulness. Over the course of their four-odd hour adventure, they'll meet monster fighting frogs in a dark forest, board game-playing seagulls on the high seas, orc mechanics in a vast desert and even a heavy-metal loving sheep on a floating island in the sky as they make their way home to their messy childhood bedroom. It all makes for some memorable puzzling backdrops, but be warned: if you're planning to play this with little ones, then you'll definitely need a puzzle savvy adult in the mix, as some of its brainteasers aren't quite as child-friendly as you might expect.

Splatoon 3 post-launch support

The August 2022 Splatoon 3 Direct presentation stream revealed many new details on Nintendo's upcoming shooting game. Some of the new information announced at the stream include post-launch support plans and a dedicated SplatNet 3 app.

SplatNet 3 will appear inside the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app. Users with an active paid subscription will be able to access the Splatoon 3 hub, where they can check their battle records or purchase special gear. One of the new segments that the app will have is Crusty Sean's Wandercrust, where players can contribute Inked Points they've earned from battles to support Sean's journeys. SplatNet 3 will launch on the same day Splatoon 3 releases, which is September 9, 2022.

The Direct stream also revealed Nintendo's plans for Splatoon 3's post-launch support. The company will release new content via periodical catalogs every three months, with a total duration of two years following the game's release. Each catalog will also come with new weapons. More battle modes like X Battle and League Battle are also slated to come through post-release updates. While most of the aforementioned content will be available for free, Nintendo also revealed plans to release a major content expansion as paid DLC.

Splatoon 3 will be available worldwide for Nintendo Switch on September 9, 2022. Nintendo will also release a Switch Pro Controller and carrying case with the game's design on the same day. A few days earlier, on August 26, 2022, it will release a Nintendo Switch OLED model with Splatoon 3 motif.

Pokemon Trading Card Game TCG Online Illustration Exhibition

An online exhibition of Pokemon TCG illustrations has opened on the internet. The Pokemon Company is working with Anique to hold the Pokemon Trading Card Game Online Illustration Exhibition temporarily between August and October 2022. The website is available in multiple languages, including English.

The exhibition website primarily consists of three areas. The Life area showcases illustrations of Pokemon in their natural habitats. The History section highlights the evolution of card layouts since the TCG's debut in 1996. And the Artist area lets viewers search images made by a specific illustrator. The site also has a special area that features specific content, such as a room containing commentary from the card illustrators and another one dedicated to the winners of the 2022 illustration contest.

Anyone can visit the online exhibition website, but those who want to get actual viewing access to the illustrations must register new accounts on the site. The organizer only allows users to publish the site's content on social media by using its official sharing feature. It strictly prohibits any other publication methods, such as manual screenshots.

The online exhibition is one of The Pokemon Company's projects to promote the card game series. In July 2022, the company opened a casting call for an unscripted Pokemon TCG show series in Los Angeles. It is also working on launching Pokemon Trading Card Game Live, a free-to-play game for PCs and mobile devices, in 2022.

The Pokemon Trading Card Game Online Illustration Exhibition is available until Sunday, October 23, 2022.

Blue Archive New Year

Nexon is ready to bid the past year goodbye and celebrate the ringing in of the New Year in Blue Archive. There's one catch to that sentiment, though: It's still August.

Nevertheless, celebrations will proceed, as the Blue Archive New Year event is live now in the English-language edition of the game. Titled "New Year's Rhapsody No. 68", the event brings two new limited-rarity characters to the fore. It also brings up a new story steeped in New Year's traditions, as reflected in the game world of Kivotos.

Check out an animated promo for the event below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jmmGkSgb-8

The Blue Archive New Year event stars Problem Solver 68, a school club made up of several Gehenna Academy students. Aru, Mutsuki, Kayoko, and Haruka are looking to take their budding criminal organization to the next level by dressing to impress for their New Year's shrine visit. Hijinks, naturally, will ensue. The event adds Aru and Mutsuki in New Year's kimono outfits. Aru (New Year) and Mutsuki (New Year) are both Striker units. Aru's sniper rifle now does Piercing damage, and her EX skill chains its damage to enemies caught in its arc. Mutsuki's machine gun spreads its damage out in an unusual arch-shaped pattern to light up foes with Mystic damage.

The event itself follows the standard template for in-game events (like the Bunny event from May). Players will experience the story in one-off missions, while quests can be repeated to gather up event currencies. The currencies can be traded for goodies like character development materials and special furniture for the café. The furniture also has special animations for certain New Year's characters. A prize box is also available that drops more materials, as well as Eleph items for the standard versions of Mutsuki and Kayoko. Additionally, players can choose an omikuji fortune stick to win more rewards.

The Blue Archive New Year's Rhapsody event runs until August 22, 2022. The game is available on mobile devices.

Cardfight Vanguard Dear Days coming to PC Steam and Switch

Bushiroad and FuRyu have newly launched a Steam page for Cardfight!! Vanguard Dear Days. The companies will release the card game on PC via the platform in addition to the Nintendo Switch in November 2022.

Cardfight!! Vanguard Dear Days will have numerous fight modes using over a thousand cards from the physical card game franchise. Two of the highlighted modes will be the single-player CPU Fight and the online Ranked Fight. The latter will match players worldwide regardless of the language chosen by each player.

The Steam page so far only lists subtitles in English and Japanese. However, the game's official website has confirmed that it will also contain Japanese voiceovers. Dear Days will feature characters from Cardfight!! Vanguard overDress, the anime show that marked the series' tenth anniversary and began airing in 2021.

Dear Days will be the first Cardfight!! Vanguard game released for PCs, but that will not be the case for the Switch. FuRyu previously released Cardfight!! Vanguard EX for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in September 2019. The company has effectively replaced the PS4 with the PC for the upcoming new game.

Cardfight!! Vanguard Dear Days will be available in Japanese and English for Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam on November 17, 2022.

Undertale Megalovania Sans in Gitadora High-Voltage

The popular Undertale track "Megalovania" has appeared in Konami's Gitadora High-Voltage. It has received a new arrangement that befits the rock music-oriented arcade game. Players can also obtain in-game content featuring Sans by playing the game within two months of the crossover's launch.

Yvya, one of the Bemani Sound Team members, made the rock arrangement for "Megalovania." The new arrangement makes the high-paced track playable on the arcade game that features guitar- and drum-inspired controllers to emulate a rock music session.

The crossover also adds in-game content featuring Undertale's Sans that players can unlock by increasing their level. Level 15 will unlock new Shutters with an illustration of the character. At level 30, Sans himself will appear on the screen and interact with the player. These Undertale features are available to unlock until October 10, 2022.

The Gitadora inclusion adds another entry to the ever-growing connection between Toby Fox and Konami's Bemani series of rhythm games. The collaboration began with the inclusion of "Megalovania" in Dance Dance Revolution A3 in May 2022. Konami then added five other Undertale tracks, such as "Bonetrousle" and "Asgore," to Sound Voltex: Exceed Gear in late July 2022. Toby Fox also collaborated with Camellia to create a new original song titled "Summerblue," which will appear in Beatmania IIDX 30 Resident.

Gitadora High-Voltage is available in arcades.

Hinokami Chronicles DLC

The latest round of Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles DLC is live, and adds a new character to the playable roster. As previously announced, the next character pack unlocks Nezuko Kamado in her Advanced Demon Form. Sega's also got a free add-on for all players, adding Group Match mode to online play.

The new Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles DLC is headed by Nezuko Kamado (Advanced Demon Form). She's the second of seven planned character additions, following Tengen Uzui in July 2022. Nezuko is Tanjiro's younger sister, and was transformed into a demon. Her Advanced Demon Form shows her when she's fully awakened to her demonic nature. Rather than the more childlike form she retains most times, Advanced Demon Form Nezuko has the height and bodily proportions of an adult. She's also got the strength of a high-level demon, growing a single horn on her forehead and sporting a vine-like pattern on her limbs and torso. In the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga and anime series, she first adopted her Advanced Demon Form during the Entertainment District story arc. She transformed as she battled the demon Daki alongside her brother.

The Hinokami Chronicles DLC also brings with it a free update adding Group Matches to the game's online mode. Using Group Matches, up to eight players can gather in a single lobby to fight each other. Two players will fight, while the others spectate. Public rooms, room hosting, and rooms with friends can be set up.

Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles is available on Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. The Nezuko (Advanced Demon Form) character pack can be purchased separately, or as part of the Character Pass Bundle. The Group Matches update (version 1.50) is free to all players. Check out Siliconera's official review.

Meta Quest 2 Competitor pico 4 bytedance pc gaming vr headsetThe Meta Quest 2 is one of the most popular VR headsets on the market. It's also one of the easiest avenues to get into VR gaming since it's a standalone system and is relatively cheap in comparison to options like the Valve Index. That's slightly less true now, as a recent price hike increased the cost by $100 USD. Because there isn't much else on the market quite like Meta's flagship headset, choices are limited. However, the Pico 4 VR headset could soon be on the way to challenge the Meta Quest 2 headset. According to a WeChat post, the competitor to the Meta Quest 2 is the Pico 4 from Chinese company ByteDance. Previously, the company released the Pico Neo 3 in the west, which was impressive in its own way. It wasn't really a direct competitor to the Meta Quest 2, but it did show promise. This time around, the Pico 4 VR headset will directly compete with Meta Quest 2 while the Pico 4 Pro model will compete with Meta's Project Cambria.  ...

Blade Runner Enhanced Edition launch art Ray McCoyA day before Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition came out, I was hopeful that the re-release would do right by the original version and keep its vision intact. Unfortunately, developer Nightdive Studios fell short of this goal, as players found a whole host of bugs and framerate and upscaling issues that severely dampened the overall experience. Considering the game's long development time, many want to know how the final product turned out so poorly. Thankfully, Nightdive recently offered some insight into the rocky development process behind the shoddy launch of Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition. This news came courtesy of a PCGamesN interview with Larry Kuperman, Nightdive's director of business development, and Dimitris Giannakis, the lead producer on Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition. According to Kuperman, the game's development ended up plagued by a "perfect storm" of factors, which included a lack of QA staff due to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as Kuperma...

An Anniversary Loot Box In OverwatchOverwatch has been a massive success in the multiplayer shooter space since its release. It's no secret that interest has waned over time, though. Seasonal events have kept players engaged, thanks to new skins and modes, but the latest event comes with a caveat. The third Anniversary Remix event for Overwatch just went live, and it brings with it the news that players won't be able to purchase loot boxes once the event is over. Overwatch players can still purchase loot boxes until the end of the event, which is on August 30. However, it's important to note that this change only applies to players who want to outright buy loot boxes. Players can still  to earn loot boxes by playing the game, even after August 30.   The Anniversary event for Overwatch is typically a highlight for players, as it allows them to get their hands on every available skin from across every event. It also lets players take part in modes from across many of those events, too. Any players wishing t...
