Live-action film adaptation of Teasing Master Takagi-san

A live-action film adaptation of Teasing Master Takagi-san is in production. It'll come out on May 31, 2024. [Thanks, Livedoor!]

Rather than a faithful manga adaptation, the live-action show will have an original story. It'll feature Takagi and Nishikata in their early twenties. For reference, the story is a rom-com slice-of-life that takes place in a middle school.

Filming took place on Shodoshima in the Kagawa Prefecture. Shodoshima is the setting of Teasing Master Takagi-san. The live-action story will focus on Takagi, who returns to her old middle school as a trainee teacher. There, she meets Nishikata, who is working at the school as a gym teacher.

The live-action version will star Mei Nagano as the titular Takagi. Some of Nagano's previous roles include Suzume Yosano in Daytime Shooting Star and Anzu Murata in Burn the House Down. Fumiya Takahashi will star alongside her as Nishikata. Some of Takahashi's prominent roles are Aruto Hiden in Kamen Rider Zero-One and Gaku Kitada in Fermat no Ryori.

Teasing Master Takagi-san is a slice-of-life comic that originally ran in Monthly Shonen Sunday Mini and Monthly Shonen Sunday. It started serialization in June 2012 and ended in October 2023. There was also an anime adaptation and a game based on the story. The story follows middle school students Nishikata and Takagi, who sit beside each other. Takagi likes to tease Nishikata with jokes or pranks, so Nishikata tries to get back at her. But he usually fails to do so because Takagi will take advantage of his weaknesses and turn the situation around on him.

Teasing Master Takagi-san is in production and should come out on May 31, 2024.

fate/grand order christmas

McDonald's Japan is teasing an upcoming Fate/Grand Order collaboration, and its key visual shows a silhouette for two new Christmas Servants. More information on both the collaboration and the new Santa Servant will come out during a livestream on November 29, 2023.

The key visual shows the silhouettes of two new Santa Servants and a table full of McDonald's food. The Fate/Grand Order logo appears throughout the Christmas tree, and there's a Fou-shaped snowman at the base of it. 'The star topping the tree is Saint Quartz. Neither silhouette matches existing Santa Servants, meaning this year might give players two welfare Servants.

There's also the chance that one of them will appear in the gacha as a limited SSR, as that has happened in previous events.'The star topping the tree is Saint Quartz. Neither silhouette matches existing Santa Servants, meaning this year might give players two welfare Servants. There's also the chance that one of them will appear in the gacha as a limited SSR, as has happened in previous events. So far, the Servants with an alternate Santa version are Artoria Alter, Altera, Nightingale, Karna, Martha, Quetzacoatl, and Jeanne d'Arc Alter Lily.

These were all free Servants that you could obtain after you finished the event story and powered up using event-exclusive currency. Aside from getting a free Servant, Christmas events usually introduce a new limited SSR Servant as well. For example, a Saber version of Astolfo debuted in the same event as Christmas Altera. Meanwhile, Vritra first appeared as both a character and a unit in the same event as Christmas Karna.

Fate/Grand Order is readily available on mobile devices. More information on the Fate/Grand Order Christmas event, new Servants, and McDonald's collaboration will appear during a live stream on November 29, 2023.

Idol Project Star Vtuber Riro Ron Contract Terminated

Idol Corp announced that it terminated its contract with Project Star Vtuber Riro Ron and a member of its idol management team. It cited "dangerous and harmful" contract violations as the reason for the dismissal.

Four specific offenses were noted as part of the reasons behind the Vtuber's dismissal. Two of the causes involved Riro directly contacting fans to solicit them for offline, private, and in one case an in-person meeting, with one involving "gifts from said fan in the total value of thousands of dollars." The performer was also in a "secretive relationship" with the dismissed management team member. Idol Corp also cited the Vtuber's "misuse of controlled substances" while streaming.

Here is the full statement. In the second half of the announcement, the company noted the Riro Ron YouTube channel will be live until January 1, 2024, the Discord channels for her are already removed, and the company Discord server will have Donothon and merchandise refund request forms.

https://twitter.com/idol_corp/status/1729591027323838844?s=46

Riro debuted back in February 2023 as part of the English branch. She was the only member of that generation. She's the four member of the company to either graduate or be dismissed, with Emi Suika graduating in October 2022, Neo Sparkles graduating in December 2022, Lily Sin graduating in February 2023. Prior to this formal announcement, the Vtuber made an apology for her behavior during a stream and announced that she and the company mutually agreed to take a break.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Trickster Class

At the Dragon's Dogma 2 showcase on November 28, 2023, Capcom revealed three of the advanced vocations available in the game, including the censer-wielding Trickster class. The Warrior and Sorcerer are also confirmed to be returning from the first game.

The Warrior vocation returns as the advanced version of the Fighter. This involves wielding a greatsword and focusing on physical offense. Meanwhile, the Mage class advances into the Sorcerer, which in the original game gave up the ability to heal in order to channel more powerful spells and staves.

Perhaps most interesting, however, is the addition of the Trickster vocation. This class wields a censer and uses the smoke to confuse enemies and buff allied pawns. Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi described the class as a "great fit for players who want to step back from the action and manipulate the battle from the sidelines."

You can watch the Dragon's Dogma 2 showcase below:

The Dragon's Dogma 2 showcase was previously announced earlier this month. Around the same time a release date for for the game leaked when the PEGI ratings board posted its listing. You can read some of our hopes for the upcoming game here.

The Trickster class will arrive with Dragon's Dogma 2 on March 22, 2024, on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Release Date

During the latest showcase for the game, Capcom confirmed the release date for Dragon's Dogma 2 is March 22, 2024. The game will have a worldwide simultaneous release and will appear on the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.

You can check out the Dragon's Dogma 2 Showcase 2023 here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyBg0FQZzaI

The last time Capcom showed footage for Dragon's Dogma 2 was during TGS 2023, where two new advanced Magick vocations were shown, the Mystic Spearhand and Magick Archer. Capcom previously mentioned that the game will be roughly four times bigger than the previous entry.

On November 17, 2023, the European age-rating board PEGI accidentally listed the release date as March 22, 2024. Additionally, the Dragon's Dogma 2 Steam page stated the date earlier today, though depending on your time zone it could launch on March 21, 2024 on PCs..

As a fun anecdote, game director Hideaki Itsuno poked fun at the several leaks on his personal social media account mentioning that Capcom would "formally" announce the release date during the showcase.

The Dragon's Dogma 2 release date is March 22, 2024. The game will appear on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam. You can read about what things we'd like to see from Dragon's Dogma 2 here.

Coral Island Key Art

Coral Island is part of the increasingly crowded Farming sim genre. Farming games, life sims, cozy games – whatever you want to call them, there are many of them, and it can be tough to stand out. For Coral Island developers, Stairway Games has chosen to focus on a theme of environmental sustainability as you work to restore a dying island.

The premise of Coral Island is simple. You've left your big city job and traveled to a small tropical island to set up a farm. Your arrival is seen as a surprise, as the island has seen better days and is ranked poorly by tourist organizations. This is thanks to abundant trash and a stray oil spill that has tainted its once-clear waters. Making matters worse, the island's future is threatened by a corporate entity whose goals are to choke the life out of its community and turn it into a profitable travel destination.

This is where you come in. Your arrival will not only revive the overgrown and abandoned farmland, but your work will uncover mystical forces that require your help to restore the island's natural beauty. In gameplay, this involves raising the town's rank by making offerings to the lake goddess. This is done by donating artifacts and wildlife to the museum and cleaning out the ocean with the help of ancient undersea technology.

Screenshot by Siliconera

Coral Island owes a lot to other similar games in its design. The central farming mechanics will be familiar to players of both Stardew Valley and old-school Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons games. The museum has the same concept as Animal Crossing, albeit with a less charming curator. Even the story portions involving some ocean-dwelling people bear more than a passing resemblance to Rune Factory 3. If you've played any of these games, you can jump into Coral Island and know exactly what you're doing.

This doesn't mean Coral Island is a dull copy of its influences. Instead, it's a game that celebrates those influences and borrows the best bits where necessary to make a game that does a lot of good in its own right. For a start, the town is one of the most impressive I've seen in the genre. A far cry from other games, which settle for three shacks and a communal tavern, Starlet Town is a thriving little community with spaces that feel lived in. The cast is also huge, with more than 40 residents to meet and a revolving roster of visitors. Each character is named and has their own story to tell as well.

This is one of Coral Island's greatest strengths. Stairway Games took great strides to make this feel like a community you want to be part of. Buildings are diverse in shape and size, with little details that reveal the personalities of the townsfolk. The residents all have distinct personalities and backstories. There are even scenes that frequently pop up as you go about the day, showing NPCs interacting with one another. This town feels alive despite the threats looming over it.

Coral Island screenshot of trees
Screenshot by Siliconera

The experience of playing Coral Island is also a satisfying one. It feels like the developers noted everything that's caused friction in other games in the genre and worked to remove these elements. This is most noticeable in the inventory, which genuinely impressed me. It's permanently accessible, with no need to head into the menu to swap anything in and out. My experience was on controller, where the right stick let me cycle through everything in my pocket. Items will simply pop into your hands as soon as they're highlighted, so it takes seconds to switch tools, dig out seeds, or find gifts to hand over to your fellow residents.

This ease of use extends to everything. Townsfolk can be found easily with both an intuitive town map and an NPC tracker in the directory. All items are clearly marked if they can be donated to the lake temple or museum and are ticked off if you've already done so. Even features like an option to slow down the day timer ensure the game never gets in its own way. Coral Island feels good to play, and the only disadvantage of all this is how addictive it can get. The "just one more day" feeling is strong here.

Coral Island does have some issues, however. The one area where the game's friendly and accessible gameplay style fails to hold up is in the mines. Progression relies entirely on luck, as the exit to the next floor is hidden beneath a randomly chosen rock. In addition, progress is only saved every five floors, so if you run out of stamina and/or time while on floor four, you have to do it all again the next day. It gets tedious extremely quickly. I also have some minor nitpicks about the game's general progression system.

Coral Island mining gameplay screenshot
Screenshot by Siliconera

Ultimately, the premise requires you to rejuvenate the town, but its methods of doing so are a little too abstract. I couldn't help but notice places like the graveyard and recycling center looking worse for wear and thinking they could become projects you'd gather materials to fix up. Instead, the town automatically repairs and cleans up these areas as you sort out the ocean floor and give offerings to the goddess, which is a missed opportunity in my eyes. The town rank system is also incredibly slow. While I understand this is a game that you're supposed to take your time with and chip away at, there are times when it can feel like you're not making any progress at all because the bar moves so slowly.

There are also signs that the game may have left Early Access a little too soon. My experience with the game was full of bugs, especially regarding audio. Music and sound effects frequently don't play. Tools are far too quiet, especially when fighting enemies in the mines, where the lack of sound during combat is jarring. Music cues were noticeably absent during events such as festivals, as scenes of parades would play in eerie silence. One audio bug has the opposite effect, where the ambient audio of the ocean refuses to stop playing everywhere you go unless you reload the game.

The bugs went beyond audio, though, with UI glitches, occasional control locks requiring a full reset, and a persistent ability to remove furniture from my house were notable issues I encountered. According to the developers, these appear to be bugs exclusive to the console versions of the game (I played on PS5), so PC players may have a better experience than me. However, it's a testament to the game's quality that I still loved it despite these issues.

Screenshot by Siliconera

Coral Island is a brilliant, cozy game and essential for any fan of the farming sim genre. It's got a huge, lively town with spiritual aspects that add an interesting twist to its premise. There are more than enough quality-of-life additions that make its gameplay loop incredibly satisfying. It just might be worth waiting for its bug problem to be sorted out first, though. Once that's done, feel free to add an extra point to the score.
