Newly launched anime style RPG deckbuilder nets 90% rating on Steam

Chrono Ark was bound to grab an audience's attention. Its visuals, which feature colorful Persona 5 style character portraits, do a good job of catching the eye on their own. But it's the game's design concept that really helps it stick out. In an era where PC players can't seem to get enough of card games (see: Balatro and Slay the Spire 2) and roguelikes (see: Hades 2), Chrono Ark combines both of those genres with RPG game party building and storytelling in order to offer players something they seem to be very excited to dig into.

Hades 2, sequel to one of the best roguelikes ever made, is out now

Back in 2018, indie studio Supergiant Games put its latest project out on the Epic Games Store. While Supergiant had established a reputation by then for creating games with snappy action design, gorgeous cartoon visuals, and evocative writing, the launch of Hades, which would spend two years in early access before coming out in its final form in 2020, was a bit of a surprise. Hades took all of the action and RPG game elements that Supergiant had already so successfully displayed in Bastion, Transistor, and Pyre, and channeled them into a roguelike format that was both a departure from its past work and another showcase of its existing strengths. The result was a massive hit that's been cemented as one of the best roguelikes ever made, and a game that's created a ton of excitement for its sequel. Now, Hades 2, the sequel in question, has launched in Early Access.

Helldivers 2 receives influx of positive reviews after PSN backtrack

Helldivers 2 has had, to put it one way, a hell of a week. It quickly went from one of the biggest hits of 2024 so far—a game whose success this year is only rivalled by the likes of Palworld, Balatro, and Manor Lords—to one that was widely condemned when, recently, players were told that they'd need to link their Steam accounts to a PlayStation Network (PSN) account, even if they only planned to play on PC. As a result, Helldivers 2 ended up delisted in 177 countries that don't support PSN accounts and review bombed to the point that the once beloved game sank to a 'Mostly Negative' rating on Steam. Now, however, the account linking requirement has been dropped and Helldivers 2's Steam rating is beginning to recover.

I've been sampling Hades 2's early access build on the Steam Deck, and my only complaint – besides the smooching frog having eluded me for hours – is that it's giving me very little to write about, performance analysis-wise. Honestly, it fits the dinky PC so well you'd have thought Supergiant had decided to make this roguelike sequel a Steam Deck game that just happened to run on desktops by accident.

Hades the first was much the same, taking to the Deck like Hercules to Augean shit, but Hades 2 barely even gives away that fact that it's unfinished. It doesn't crash, stutter, or hang, and there's no point in talking about settings when it runs at a practically perfect 60fps on max quality. Make that 90fps on the Steam Deck OLED, too. It's just a fabulous game for handhelds, even in its earliest of early access days.

Hades II Preview

Although Hades II is largely the same game as its predecessor, Supergiant Games delivered some interesting mechanical changes that make the sequel a much stronger experience. After spending over 50 hours with the rogue-lite, I feel it's already better than the first title.

The first thing I noticed when diving into Hades II is its emotional story, which pulls you in right away. In Hades, you spent most of the game's first 20 hours trying to unravel the mystery of Tartarus. While likable, Zagreus at first feels like a spoiled child rebelling against his family without a real cause. Of course, the game's excellent storytelling eventually reveals a lot more about his family and his yearning to discover what happened to his mother Persephone. In fact, what set Hades apart from other games in its genre was its extensive lore and how Supergiant Games cleverly used the rogue-lite formula to slowly reveal the larger narrative.

A screenshot of Hades II Early Access
Image via Supergiant Games

This incredible narrative style returns in Hades II, except you immediately connect with the series' new protagonist Melinoe. From the very start, you feel her desperation to rescue her family, which consists of Zagreus, Hades, and Persephone. The emotional plot had me instantly hooked as I tore through every enemy and level to desperately try to reunite her with her brother and parents. Just like the first game, Supergiant Games does a great job of teasing out new lore and information every time you die and start a new run.

Another improvement is the way Hades II implements magick in the game. Whenever you use a charged "Special" attack or "Cast" ability, you use up energy in this second meter. Although the bar refills after entering a new room, it really forces you to be strategic with every attack. You can find a perfect run completely going up in flames if you spam your abilities too quickly and find your Magick drained. While this may seem like an unnecessary hurdle on the surface, it also forces you to pick and choose wisely with the game's other mechanics.

A screenshot of Hades II Early Access
Image via Supergiant Games

One of Hades II's best features is Arcana cards. Unlocking each one allows you to add unique buffs to Melinoe. For example, "The Unseen" cards allow you to recover 2 Magick energy every second. As you can imagine, this is a game changer. With it, you don't have to worry about running out of energy and the bar will slowly fill back up. However, when you pair that with certain Keepsakes, you can actually triple the speed at which your Magick recovers. So, Hades II gives you a lot of room to mix and match to customize your gameplay experience. There is also not a single power that feels broken, and everything has a trade-off, so the game constantly challenges you to change your build, even in the middle of a run.

Weapon evolutions also make their return and are just as interesting as they were in Hades. A weapon that was once a slash attack can be completely transformed with different properties as you progress through the game. If I had any gripe about Hades II, it is that I didn't entirely connect to the weapons as much as I did in Hades. At least with Zagreus, I was constantly struggling to decide which weapon to pick up. But with Melinoe, I found myself mostly sticking with a single weapon, and it felt a lot better than the rest.

A screenshot of Hades II Early Access
Image via Supergiant Games

But I also want to put it out there that I'm by no means a pro at rogue-lites. So, it could just be a skill-level issue. I know that, at least with Hades, I felt the overall weapon selection to be a bit better. However, it should be pointed out the game is still in early access, and there are going to be updates on the weapons. I also haven't unlocked all the evolutions yet, so my favorite weapon might actually be waiting to be discovered.

Unlike the first title, though, I think Hades II offers up a more complex gameplay system that doesn't rely solely on weapons. As I mentioned earlier, Magick plays a big part in combat. As you progress through the story, you also unlock "Hex" spells, which drastically change the way you tackle battle. From a supercharged beam of light that dishes out thousands of damage to healing, the Hexy system adds another layer to the game's battle system, which makes it a lot more interesting.

Lastly, I found the side characters in Hades II to be a lot more interesting. One of my favorite relationships out of the gate is between Melinoe and Nemesis. Their competitive relationship had my blood boiling at first, which is what any good rivalry should do. But like anything in the Hades universe, there is a lot more to the characters and lore than meets the eye.

A screenshot of Hades II Early Access

Fans who loved Hades will essentially get more of the same with the sequel. However, I really do think Supergiant Games has added enough changes to the game's core mechanics to make it an overall improved experience. And that's with the game still in Early Access, which has me excited to see where the game goes from here.

Most importantly, though, the story of Hades II is already excellent. So, if you are someone who fell in love with the game's first lore, there is a lot to love here. The game already does an amazing job connecting the two titles and revealing how the two stories are connected. So, if you were worried about the sequel taking on a new protagonist, don't. It's very much a story about Zagerus, and it takes an even deeper dive into the lore behind Tartarus and the family of Hades. Hades II is already off to a great start and is already an improvement over the original.

Hades II Early Access is available now on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Hololive Dreamhack

I confess that I've never really bought in to the whole "Vtubers as idols" thing. I've always thought of them as streamers first and musicians or performers second, despite liking a good amount of the music they've produced. But after sitting down to watch the Hololive x DreamHack: Down Under concert, I'm starting to see the appeal, especially after only six Vtubers covered so many styles and songs.

Taking place on the April 27, 2024 during DreamHack Melbourne 2024, the concert was a return to old stomping grounds for Hololive EN's Hakos Baelz. Performing alongside her was fellow EN member Calliope Mori, with Pavolia Reine and Kureiji Ollie from the Indonesian branch and Houshou Marine and Tokoyami Towa representing the Japanese side. The concert was a much smaller and more manageable affair than the multi-day behemoth that was the Hololive 5th Fes back in March 2024, but there was still a good spread of powerful singers and natural entertainers. Plus, it's always nice to see representation from all the branches together.

https://twitter.com/hakosbaelz/status/1784858448938799425

Even before the show itself started, the crowd led a touching moment. As the camera lingered on an audience member's plushie of Hololive alumnus and fellow Aussie Tsukumo Sana, a chant went up for the streamer who is clearly sorely missed almost two years after her graduation. It's always fun to see members of the audience displaying their merchandise or handmade signs, and like in their streams the talents had a few moments of interaction. For example, during an intermission, Mori Calliope disproved the idea of the show being recorded by calling out another audience member who had mimed a kiss between a plushie of her and gen-mate Takanashi Kiara.

When the concert truly began, it was with Towa, Calli, and Bae singing "Journey Like A Thousand Years," which was the first original group song produced for Hololive English Myth. It was a rousing introduction to be sure, and yet the follow-up would only intensify the atmosphere as Kureiji Ollie brought her signature frenetic energy to the stage. Performing her original song "Jollie Jollie," she somehow managed to to match the stage presence of the previous three all by herself.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfZR9jVP6tw

The first segment of the show, which is available to watch for free on Youtube, was rounded out with Hololive mainstay Houshou Marine and her song "Bishoujo Muzai Pirates." Marine's music runs the gamut from hypnotic rhythms to piratical anthems and raunchy swing tunes, so this medley of different styles allowed her to show off her range. But one thing I really appreciated was seeing parts of the music video shown on the stage backing. It's a nice simple way to fill some space, sure, but a lot of Marine's MV's in particular have some charming visuals and it's nice to seem them shown off again.

About a third of the way through the Hololive x DreamHack concert, an intermission MC'ed by Calli and Bae saw the return of the notorious "EN Curse," as some technical troubles ensued with one of their mics. Swiftly sorted out, the moment and the intermission as a whole served as a palette cleanser before the next part of the show. Kicked off, fittingly, by Towa performing "Palette." A significant shift in tone, this act was a more crooning and mellow affair with the audience's attention held not by active choreography but simply Towa's powerful voice. Afterwards, she was joined on stage by Pavolia Reine for a duet cover of Moona Hoshinova's "High Tide," prompting a big cheer from the crowd.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stmZAThUl64

Moona is known as a bit of a songstress herself, but if there were any members to keep up with her it was these two. I don't think I'd heard the two Hololive talents sing together before so I was surprised by how their voices worked so well at DreamHack, with Towa's deeper voice providing a nice contrast to Reine's as they each switched who took the lead on vocals.

The next set was an EN branch double bill with Calliope's "Wanted, Wasted" and Bae's "Mess," and while both were very well performed I was drawn again to the choreography and specifically, how it was affected by model and design of the Vtuber in question. I couldn't help but feel like Mori's model, with the long hair, skirt and veil, felt a bit stiff compared to her more active movements. Meanwhile, Baelz' design (which I admit took a while to grow on me after I first saw it) felt much better suited to the stage as her baggy sleeves and ribbons accentuated her movements like a cheerleader's pom-poms.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aetXqd9B8WE

The next few songs wound down the tone with Reine's "Illusion Night," followed by Calli performing her One Piece-themed song "Future Island" alongside Marine. Bae and Ollie followed up with a cover of "Q." It was a particular treat to see how the difference in singers affect those last two, like how Bae and Ollie's twinned energy and attitude gelled excellently with the tone of the song.

The final two songs were both total crowdpleasers. One was "Blue Clapper" with Marine, Ollie, and Reine, with an ensemble finale of "Shiny Smiley Story", complete with a wardrobe change into their proper 'Idol' outfits. As something of a Hololive theme song, "SSS" is at this point slick and well practiced for a lot of the talents but it remains novel since who exactly performs it and how many there are changes with each show. It's always entertaining trying to pick out different voices in the harmonies and hear how the song is split up between each of them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68KV7JnrvDo&t=5s

It's hard not to marvel at not just the multitude of different singers Hololive has gathered together over the years, but also at the range of styles they can perform. Even with only 6 performers, the Hololive x DreamHack concert covered a multitude of genres, from powerful ballads and frenetic rap to Idol anthems. I've said before I'm not much for idols, but I'm still looking forward to seeing what future concerts and other talents can bring to the table.

VOD's for the Hololive x DreamHack Melbourne concert will be available to view on SPWN until May 27, 2024.

Honkai: Star Rail Dreamjoy Memoir

A new event preview appeared on HoYolab, detailing the rewards and activities coming to Honkai: Star Rail in the Dreamjoy Memoir event. The event is set to go live alongside the Version 2.2 update, with its bonus rewards available until June 17, 2024.

Participation in the event will require players to complete the Trailblaze mission "On the Eight Day," which will likely arrive as part of the story update in Version 2.2. Luckily for those who aren't fully caught up with the story, the event will remain accessible after the end date just without the bonus rewards. Those rewards include 1,000 Stellar Jades, some Formless Resin, Tracks of Destiny, and a four-star Harmony light cone called "For Tomorrow's Journey." That Light Cone boosts the wearer's attack, as well as their damage after using an ultimate. The regular rewards include the Tracks of Destiny trace material and a chatbox skin, along with a few more Stellar Jades.

The event itself will involve editing several Clockie scenes by dictating the length of story snippets. Each snippet effects the overall emotional score of the scene in a different way, and by making snippets longer or shorter players will attempt to reach the targeted amount. There will also be sections where the player controls Hanu, a photography activity, and a puzzle area that utilizes the Dream Bubble mechanics similar to those already found around Penacony.

HoYoverse also noted that after the conclusion of the version 2.2 storyline certain characters won't visit the Astral Express anymore, though why exactly is yet to be revealed. Before that, a Myriad Celestia trailer appeared showing some more backstory for upcoming character Robin and her brother Sunday.

The Dreamjoy Memoir event will launch in Honkai: Star Rail on the same day as the Version 2.2. update on May 8, 2024. Honkai: Star Rail is immediately available on PC, PS5, and mobile devices.

Beat Saber Meta Quest 1 Support Ends This Year

Beat Games and Oculus VR announced that Beat Saber will not be supported on the Meta Quest 1 starting on November 2, 2024, with no new updates, customer support, and other elements being cut or phased out at that point. People will still be able to use that headset with the not updated version or with Meta Quest Steam Link to play the updated PC version on Valve's storefront.

The official FAQs offered more details about how this will work. People who own Beat Saber on the Meta Quest 1 will be able to still play it. They just won't be able to get any updates that add free or paid DLC. If there's a problem, people can't get support for it. They also won't be able to see their scores on leaderboards or play with others.

It will, however, be possible to transfer progress and the game to other Meta Quest headsets like the 2, 3, or Pro, for example. There are cloud save backups, and this is a cross-play title tied to someone's account. So the copy of Beat Saber and its DLC a Meta Quest 1 player owns will also work on the Meta Quest 2, 3, Pro, or Rift devices. The support page also offered details on how to transfer data from a Meta Quest 1 to a PC Steam copy.

The developer explained support is ending so it can focus on the game on other devices. It didn't note if PlayStation owners could expect something like this to eventually happen with the PS VR and PS VR2.

Beat Saber is available for the Meta Quest 1, 2, 3, and Pro, the PS VR and PS VR2, and PC headsets via Steam. Meta Quest 1 support ends on November 2, 2024.

The main characters of Delicious in Dungeon floundering as they prepare a meal.

Delicious in Dungeon, also known as Dungeon Meshi, premiered on Netflix on January 4, 2024. A rare weekly release for the streaming platform, the anime about adventurers eating monsters as they explored a dungeon became a quiet hit in the winter season. This season being a double cour, we're now firmly in the second batch of episodes for Delicious in Dungeon's first season, and the show is already going from good to great!

Though already a beautifully produced and hilariously written show, DinD's seventeenth episode "Harpy; Chimera" lays the show's themes bare and dial's up that worked in the show's opening episodes.

To back up a little, Delicious in Dungeon followed the adventures Laios, Marcille, Chilchuk, and Senshi as they ventured into the dungeon to save Laios' sister, Falin. This lost member of the party was eaten by a Dragon on a previous trip into the dungeon, because the party failed eat and rest properly before fighting it. This made the opening episodes themes on the importance of physical and mental wellness abundantly clear. Even if our heroes were in a race against the clock to save Falin, taking time to nourish their minds and bodies through cooking allowed them to remain healthy and capable while on their mission.

However, the opening batch of episodes persistently hinted at larger issues going on with this world and its characters. Why would the Mad Mage who created the dungeon make it so easy to revive the adventures who parish inside of it? Why are the differences between fantasy races, and especially their lifespans, mentioned so often? Why are Laios' usual shonen protagonist earnestness and hyper fixation on monsters so off putting to other characters?

While I won't spoil the rest of the series here, the answers lie in Delicious in Dungeon being so much more than an anime about people eating monsters while on an adventure. We've reached a turning point in the anime, and the themes it tackles are about to become much more compelling and varied. Learning how to accept death, how to balance your ambition with the needs of others, and how to fit into a community as a neurotypical person are all prominent themes in the rest of Delicious in Dungeon's run.

Of course, that original focus on wellness will still be present and is going to ramp up too! There's about to be an entire, fan favorite, character who takes the importance of self and communal care to the extreme. All the while, we'll get some of the most novel and interesting worldbuilding we've seen in a fantasy anime in a long time.

If the shocking developments of "Harpy; Chimera'' felt like a turning point in the show to you, that's because they were. Delicious in Dungeon is about to explore ideas and subjects not commonly seen in anime, and become even more charming in the process. In short, the anime just reached the part of the manga that elevates the series to something unforgettable, and anime fans should get ready for this show to become the best anime airing in any given week.

The Delicious in Dungeon anime is streaming on Netflix, and the manga is handled by Yen Press outside Japan.
