Siliconera Saturday, April 12, 2025 3:00 PM
It has been a bit since an isekai anime has captured my attention. You really have to stand out and do something unique in this genre to keep me around for long. The Beginning After the End, now streaming on Crunchyroll, attempts to offer a more palatable and rich take on series like Mushoku Tensei, but is far too slow at this point in time.
The story starts with a (literal) bang as the king of a technologically advanced world destroys a ton in the pursuit of dominance and conquest. This king seems like a brutal, lonely, and tragic character. It also just so happens that, however he passes away, he reincarnates in an unfamiliar fantasy world as a baby with all of his memories intact.
![]()
The intro is an intriguing one to this story and I wish we got just a little bit more of the main character Arthur's past life. Instead, the beginning of The Beginning After the End focuses more on his new life and the gradual aging process from infant to toddler. I do appreciate this more intimate style of seeing Arthur with his new parents and their relationships form.
In fact, I would go so far as to say his mother, Alice, is already up there for contention in the best moms in anime. She is a wonderful lady that cares for her son, has no qualms about getting down and dirty to do whatever it takes, and has one of the most affectionate personalities I've seen in anime.
Arthur's father is a pretty solid character, too, but I do need to see more from him and his magical abilities. Beyond the crux of Arthur and his relationship with his parents, the first episode of The Beginning After the End also focuses on him trying to read books and learn more about the world and magic.
Through this, we get a lot of narration from his previous self's voice actor. These lead to some humorous moments as his past inclinations of fighting to survive contrast with this relatively peaceful fantasy world. On the animation side, this isekai series is right in the middle of the pack for the genre.
![]()
It is far from the best animation style in the category, but it is also not even close to the awfulness I've seen from some of the lesser series. The world design is pretty forgettable, but I appreciate the characters. They have just enough detail and quality to already have some memorable appearances and designs.
Overall, though, I don't know how to feel about The Beginning After the End. I will say you just can't do so little in the first episode. Yeah, there is a bit of a cliffhanger at the end of the pilot, but it isn't anything special. In fact, what happens at the end of the episode should've happened halfway through, instead.
That said, I won't let the excruciatingly slow pacing stop me from continuing this series. The characters and mystery surrounding Arthur's past life together have a lot of promise, so I do recommend it to isekai and fantasy anime fans. Plus, the opening and ending songs are spectacular, so that helps. But it just might be worth binging this one rather than watching weekly.
The Beginning After the End is streaming right now on Crunchyroll.

One of the new additions to the Blue Moon Update in Fisch was the addition of 9 New Quests in the First and Second Sea. As you can imagine, the game doesn't really tell you where all these quests are, nor how to do them. That's where we come in. Here is where to find (and how to finish) All New Quests in Fisch Blue Moon Update.
All 9 New Quests in Fisch
With the expectation of one 2-part quest, you can do these in any order. Most of these are extremely simple, taking no more than a few minutes. Unfortunately, the majority of these take place in the Second Sea, so hopefully you've made it to that point. If you haven't, the Blue Moon Update is a fantastic opportunity to level up.
Table of contents
Moosewood - Find a crate on Roslit Bay
![]()
![]()
At Moosewood (in the First Sea), look for a yellow message in a bottle (it will be glowing a bit). Take it, and the message inside will say to go to Roslit Bay and find a crate. Sail to Roslit Bay and go to the back of the island, past the pond. The white and brown crate is on a white patch of dirt. Interact with it to finish the quest and get 5 Kraken Tentacles as an award. Sweet!
Sunstone Island - Catch 20 Fish using Crab Cages
![]()
![]()
At Sunstone Island, look for a character with a crab hat next to the Angler [Quest] NPC. He will ask you to catch 20 fish using Crab Cages. Fortunately, you can buy a bunch of Crab Cages next to him. Unfortunately, most things you catch with the Crab Cages don't count as fish. The only things that count are Crabs, Lobsters, and a few others. Most of the stuff you catch will be junk, sticks, urchins, and the like, so make sure you get at least 100 Crab Cages (if not more). We found the best place to catch fish using Crab Cages was anywhere in the Ocean. Once you've caught the 20 fish, return to the crab dude, and you'll get some XP.
Roslit Bay - Catch and appraise an Eel
![]()
![]()
At the Roslit Bay pier, look for a fisherman with glasses (he's wearing a brown Fisherman's hat). He will ask you to fish out and appraise an Eel. You can catch an Eel in the Moosewood Pond (don't try to catch it from the ocean). When you get one, go to the Appraisal NPC (he's also at Moosewood), and appraise the Eel. Return to the fisherman at Roslit Bay and get some XP for your trouble.
Grand Reef - Catch a Shiny Grand Reef Guardian
![]()
![]()
![]()
Definitely the most annoying out of all the nine quests. Visit the pirate ship at the Grand Reef and talk to the pirate with the colorful hat. He needs you to catch a Grand Reef Guardian, but not just any Grand Reef Guardian; a Shiny one!!! Like the name suggests, you can catch one at the Grand Reef.
There are two ways you can do this:
We chose the latter method, but it took us a good 20 minutes of appraising before our Grand Reef Guardian shone. Fortunately, when we turned the Shiny Grand Reef Guardian to the pirate, we gained a whopping 5 levels, so maybe it was worth it?
Waveborn - Collect 5 different colored shells
![]()
![]()
The first, and arguably easiest, quest in the Second Sea. Look for a pink mermaid (?) on the left of the three NPCs at Waveborn (she is pretty hard to miss). She will ask you to collect five different colored shells. So where are these shells? Right next to her! Yup, just collect a blue, red, yellow, green, and pink shell and hand them over. You're done. Lazy mermaids-thing...whatever she is...
Waveborn - Catch 3 fish in 30 seconds
![]()
![]()
So this one is actually tricky. On Waveborn, on the right of the three NPCs you'll find another fisherman with glasses. He will challenge you to catch 3 fish in 30 seconds. This is actually trickier than it sounds, and you'll likely fail a few times. The trick is to catch 3 easy fish by using bait that boosts your Lure Speed. Unfortunately, if you hook a fish that gives you negative progress speed, you're pretty much cooked and will need to restart. Do not do this if there is an Aurora present.
We did this by using the Great Dreamer Rod with the Instant Catcher Bait. We caught two fish, and the Cthulu passive (from the Great Dreamer Rod) gave us the third one, and it counted. Again, your prize is some XP.
Isle of New Beginnings - Crystal Wrasse to Lorelei
![]()
![]()
![]()
On the Isle of New Beginnings, look for a mermaid (she will be near the merchant and where most players gather to fish for Tartarugas). The mermaid will task you with catching a Crystal Wrasse. Here's the problem: you can only catch a Crystal Wrasse at the Grand Reef... which is back in the First Sea. So, go back, catch a Crystal Wrasse (we actually caught one in our first go), and come back to the mermaid (Lorelei is her name).
You need to hold the Crystal Wrasse in order to give it to her. She will reward you with a Mermaid's Favor. If you use this necklace, you get 10% more money for all the fish you sell in the next 5 minutes.
Pine Shoals - Myco Reunion Part 1
![]()
![]()
![]()
At Pine Shoals, look for a blue-capped mushroom kid. He will ask you to give him a ride to the island over (Lushgrove) because he can't swim and he doesn't have a boat. When you accept the quest, a line will appear from the mushroom kid leading you to his destination. Spawn any boat you have, and the kid will hop into the passenger's seat. Give him a ride to the island and climb to where his house is. Don't worry about him climbing high cliffs because he will just teleport to you if you get too far ahead of him. When you get to his house, his mom will thank you, and you'll be able to start Part 2 of this quest.
Lushgrove - Myco Reunion Part 2
![]()
![]()
![]()
You can only accept this quest if you've done Myco Reunion Part 1. To thank you for returning her son home, the mom offers to prepare some Sporey Soup for you, but she needs the ingredients. What are the ingredients? Five different fish, that's it. So, just go ahead and catch any five different fish, wherever you want. We actually caught ours from an Animal Pool. Return to mama mushroom when you are done, and she will give you the Sporey Soup. If you use the Soup, you'll get Double XP for 5 minutes, which is pretty sweet.
That's all there is to it. Unfortunately, there is no big reward at the end, but we hope you had fun finishing these nine quests. If you haven't already, check out our Fisch codes for some in-game goodies that don't require you to do a quest.

If you are looking for an excellent core in water-focused teams in Cookie Run Kingdom, very few picks will be better than Sea Fairy Cookie, who is capable of dealing massive damage while providing a myriad of top tier element-related buffs.
But although a game changer, the Guardian of Nature still needs a very specific build to excel. Here are the best toppings and beascuits for Sea Fairy Cookie in Cookie Run Kingdom.
Table of contents
About Sea Fairy Cookie
![]()
Sea Fairy Cookie is a middle-row Bomber that relies on her Soaring Compassion skill for both stun and damage. While at level 1, the skill allows her to deal 150% Water DMG to targets before stunning the five closest ones and dealing another wave of 216.3% damage.
To awaken Sea Fairy's full potential, however, you must also unlock her Crystal Jam. Apart from allowing her to provide a teamwide 30% Water DMG and 10% Water CRIT DMG buff via her Rally Effect, the Jam also gives her access to her Tidal Wave enhanced skill. The skill is the true game-changer here and sees Sea Fairy Cookie bring forth a massive wave, dealing 198.7% Water DMG to all enemies hit before stunning them and following up with multiple attacks, each dealing 135.6% DMG (level 1).
Upon its use, Tidal Wave will also boost the Water DMG of all ally cookies matching the element by 17.5%. Also, did I mention that the skill deals 466.3% extra DMG to summons?
How to unlock her Crystal Gem
You can unlock Sea Fairy Cookie's Crystal Jam by leveling her up to level 50 and then expending 4x Soul Essence, 120 Arcane Crystals, and 100x Sea Fairy Cookie's Life Jewels to craft it. Like its wielder, you can further upgrade the crystal to boost its effects. Upgrading it to at least +15 allows Sea Fairy Cookie to get huge stat buffs based on her promotion rank.
The best Toppings and Tart for Sea Fairy Cookie
![]()
To mitigate the 16-second cooldown of her skills, the best toppings for Sea Fairy Cookie are a full Swift Chocolate set (featuring five toppings and a matching tart). Pairing the topping set with Searing Raspberry can also work. When looking for bonus effects, prioritize Cooldown, CRIT%, and Amplify Buff. Make sure to also not underestimate DMG Resist, specifically when looking to use her in the arena.
The best Beascuits for Sea Fairy Cookie
Sea Fairy Cookie benefits the most from a regular Legendary Spicy Beascuit featuring Cooldown, CRIT%, and Element DMG sub-stats. Ideally, you'd want to prioritize CD until her Skills become available within at most 12-second intervals. Adding DMG Resist Bypass can also work wonders for both PVE and the Arena.
Now that you know how to build Sea Fairy Cookie in Cookie Run Kingdom, I also highly recommend that you check out the best Agar Agar Cookie toppings and beascuits to bring out the most in one of her best late-game partners.

You may have had BitLife playthroughs where you become royalty and characters who are millionaire drug dealers. Combining these two, however, is surprisingly difficult. This is where the Lord of the Underworld challenge comes in to test whether you can go from the top of the world to the bottom.
Table of contents
BitLife Lord of the Underworld challenge guide
BitLife's Lord of the Underworld challenge has five tasks to complete:
Completing this challenge requires purchasing the Dealer job pack. Without this pack, you won't have access to cartels or the Kingpin rank, preventing you from finishing the last three tasks of this challenge.
Becoming a King and abdicating the throne
The first task of BitLife's Lord of the Underworld challenge is to become a King. Doing this requires creating a male character born in any country with royalty. Below are some suggestions to start with:
Generally speaking, being born in a European country gives you the best odds of having a royal character. Since this challenge requires becoming a king, you'll need to make a male character who's born a prince—no other rank works for this.
![]()
While the Celebrity Dating App works to turn a commoner into a royal, it won't let you turn into a king. You'll have to resort to luck for this one or use God Mode if you have it.
Once you create a character born as a prince, wait for your character's father to pass away or eliminate him to ascend in rank and become a king. From here, you can head into Activities, Royalty, and Abdicate to knock out the first two tasks.
For more details about the game's royalty system, check out our complete list of countries with royalty in BitLife.
Join a cartel
![]()
Now that you're no longer a royal, it's time to join a drug cartel. You can do this by heading into Occupation, Special Careers, and Dealer. Unless you committed many crimes during your royal life, you'll want to start with a low-infamy cartel and work your way up. In most cases, a low-infamy group will accept you without many issues.
Selling products
![]()
Once you join a cartel, you'll start as a dealer who goes around selling products to customers. You'll find Turf near the top of your dealer menu, where you can see a list of potential buyers. Head through the list and make some money until you reach at least $50,000 sold. It may take a few years to get here, but rising up the ranks and gaining access to manufacturing will help.
Becoming a kingpin
Your ultimate goal during BitLife's Lord of the Underworld challenge is to become a Kingpin. There are five ranks to climb through:
![]()
As you succeed in selling products to customers, you'll rank up to Runner and unlock supply runs. These let you make extra money by delivering products to specific areas, ensuring their packaging isn't damaged and that you have a quiet location to drop them off. Succeeding in these will eventually rank you up to manufacturing, letting you cook up your own substances that can rake in a ton of profit. Your goal is to get around $100,000 in total profits for your next promotion.
Fortunately, reaching Lieutenant makes things easy. You'll now need to befriend everyone in your cartel and convince them to overthrow your current Kingpin or Queenpin. Doing this will rank you up to Kingpin, knocking out BitLife's Lord of the Underworld challenge and rewarding you with a cosmetic prize.

Bungie has officially released the first glimpses of Marathon. It has taken nearly 30 years for Bungie to revive the IP, which had its trilogy on Mac in the 1990s. Naturally, things are very different from what they were originally on Apple's devices. Here's what we know—and what we expect—so far.
We will update this article as more information becomes available.
Table of contents
Marathon release date
Marathon will be available globally on September 23 (if there are no more delays), with an alpha coming up on April 23. If you're in North America, you can participate in the test (given that you get selected) to try out an early build.
Marathon Platforms
Marathon will be available on PC and consoles. Both Xbox and PlayStation players will be able to jump into action with PC players, and this was already confirmed ahead of the official reveal.
Marathon Price
Marathon isn't going to be free-to-play, and it will be different from Destiny 2 in this regard. In Destiny 2, you can access a lot of content for free and then pay for the expansions. Marathon will have an entry, but the number is yet to be confirmed as of writing. It's also going to have season passes. Rumors also suggest that the title will launch with three maps, and more will be added post-launch.
Marathon core gameplay, explained
Marathon's core gameplay will involve players playing as Runners, all cybernetics with perks and skills. Apart from weapons, players will have to use the skills and abilities of their chosen runners to survive on the map, explore different areas, defeat opponents, and escape the map with all the loot. In a nutshell, it will not be easy, and teams will have to coordinate between themselves to survive.
Marathon game world
The gameplay happens on the alien world of Tau Ceti, which is a peculiar space, to say the least. The environment will test you just like your opponents. Every run will be affected by dynamic weather and other dangers that will be present on the alien planet.
Is Marathon a sequel?
While Marathon is a direct successor to the original trilogy, it can be enjoyed as a standalone title just fine. Sure, knowing the older games will allow you to connect the lore materials better and understand the concepts quicker. But the game will be enjoyable for even those who might not have ever heard of or played the classics.
Will Marathon have a competitive mode?
The first trailer has already confirmed that there will be a Ranked mode, along with seasonal events, community-based stuff, and more. Expect the game to be quite competitive, especially when Ranked mode goes live. If I had to predict, Bungie will push hard on the esports side of things with their upcoming title.

Marvel Rivals Season 2 introduced a smorgasbord of new achievements for players to complete, and one of them is giving players more trouble than most. "A Necessary Sacrifice" doesn't come out and tell you what you need to do to unlock it, so let's break it down step by step.
Table of contents
How to jump into a Quick Match on Krakoa in Marvel Rivals
![]()
"A Necessary Sacrifice" is a new Chronoverse Saga achievement added to Marvel Rivals when Season 2 dropped. Its description reads: "Attempt to destroy Cerebro to prevent Ultron from backing up his data in Krakoa." Like most of Season 2's new challenges and achievements, the only way to unlock "A Necessary Sacrifice" is to play on Marvel Rivals' new Krakoa map.
If you were active on Marvel Rivals during Season 1, you probably remember that NetEase Games made sure you could jump into a match on the Central Park map to complete its unique challenges. They've brought this handy feature back for Season 2, and it's just as helpful now as it was back then.
Here's how to guarantee you'll get into a Quick Match on Krakoa in Marvel Rivals:
Following these steps guarantees you a spot on a match running on Krakoa. It may take a while for the game to load since everyone's trying to nab all the Krakoa-exclusive achievements right now. Don't worry; you'll get in if you're patient.
How to unlock "A Necessary Sacrifice" in Marvel Rivals
![]()
Once you're loaded into a match on Krakoa, check to see which team you're on. You can only complete "A Necessary Sacrifice" by playing on Team A. There's no way to guarantee which team you end up on when you load into a match on Krakoa, so you'll have to play a numbers game. I hope you get lucky.
On the Krakoa map, Team A represents the heroes trying to stop Ultron from uploading his malefic data into Krakoa's consciousness. You'll know you're on Team A if you spawn in the bay with the crystals, the cave with two exits, or the room with the red-leaved tree.
From here, all you have to do is win the match. Instead of seeing a victory scene where Emma Frost decapitates Ultron with her thunder thighs, you'll get one that shows Wolverine impaling the mechanical menace with his Adamantium claws. Once you've

This will allow you to do roughly 88 pulls on a limited banner and 21 pulls on standard Warp in Honkai Star Rail 3.3. While this is not a full 90 pulls, you can use the Undying Starlight from your previous pulls to get more Special Passes and do extra pulls for a guaranteed 5-star character or Light Cone.
Naturally, the total amount of Stellar Jades obtained will also depend on your participation in each event.
Players with Express Supply Pass and paid Battle Pass
![]()
With the monthly Express Supply Pass, you can also get up to 3,780 Stellar Jades (roughly 23 pulls). In addition, you can obtain up to 8 more pulls from the 680 Stellar Jades and 4 Star Rail Special Passes if you purchase the Nameless Glory Battle Pass.
The estimated Stellar Jades and pull count in Honkai Star Rail 3.3 is based on beta, so the actual amount could be different upon the update's official release.

Another free content drop for Vampire Survivors means more unlockables for you to find. While this drop is centered around the new farm stage, "The Coop," eagle-eyed players might notice a new secret added to the game's list of cryptic hints. Here's what it means and how to unlock it.
How to unlock Space Dette in Vampire Survivors
The new secret character is Space Dette. She's another space-faring character like Space Dude who has found themselves in the improbable world of Vampire Survivors. The only information you'll have up front is "Quickly break the bounds of Space and find Love."
![]()
The easiest thing to get from this clue is that we have to go to Space 54. It's a particularly tight level, in terms of ground you can traverse. It makes sense that you'll need to break free of those confines to find this secret. Several characters have the ability to do so right off the bat, including:
Any character can get through a wall if you fill the screen with enough bullets and enemies that it starts causing frame hitches. But if you want to do this quickly, using one of the above characters who can do it by default is probably your best bet.
Once you can transcend the borders of space, you'll need to start looking for a pillar with a heart on top. Fortunately, despite the maps in this game being very large, this item isn't far from the start. Head southeast from the starting point ,and you should find it in just a few seconds. The screenshot below shows the exact location to help you out.
![]()
Once you collect the heart, you can quit out of the stage. Space Dette will be unlocked and ready to use. She's incredibly powerful. I would easily argue that she's one of the best characters in this game. She starts with the fully evolved Photonstorm weapon, which consistently pulls off some of the highest damage in every run. On top of that, her Photonstorm gets stronger every time she levels. On top of that, defeating more and more enemies surrounds her with adoring fans. These little space-ducks and space-bunnies would do anything for her. Anything.

Bungie's latest title, Marathon, is a sci-fi extraction shooter set to release in the latter half of 2025. While its gameplay and release date was unknown for some time, Bungie's April Marathon gameplay reveal showcase officially unveiled the exact day the game will launch.
What's the release date for Marathon?
Marathon will officially launch on September 23, 2025. Bungie first revealed this during Marathon's gameplay reveal showcase, giving up a sneak peek at what's in store for the game and how long we have until it releases.
Although this time is subject to delays, the latest information at the time of writing is that September 23 is Bungie's current planned arrival time for Marathon.
This release time gives us just a few months to prepare for its release, with several promotional events occurring between now and then. During its April gameplay showcase, you can watch 15 minutes of Marathon livestreams to claim the Tau Ceti Emblem in Destiny 2 to celebrate these announcements. Similarly, subscribing to any Marathon streamer during the gameplay showcase's runtime will give you the Marathon Reveal Runner badge.
The initial gameplay showcase highlighted various streamers playing Marathon firsthand, showing exactly how its gunplay, map, and match missions work. The team behind Marathon also gives a complete overview of how the game works, from your characters' abilities to its team dynamics and potential strategies. Exact details are limited, but there's still a lot to unpack here.
You can also sign up for Marathon's Closed Alpha playtest through the game's official Discord server if you're eager to play and don't want to wait until September. While this won't be the fully polished version of the game, you'll at least have an idea of how it works and what to expect leading up to its September launch.

The first gameplay reveal for Marathon is live, and players can redeem codes to celebrate the occasion.
So far, the number of codes available for players is rather limited, but it's expected to increase in the future. To kick things off, Bungie is providing a unique and free gift for everyone to redeem and use in Destiny 2. It's a cool emblem that's a direct celebration of Bungie's upcoming project.
All Marathon codes
Interestingly, the first code related to the game isn't directly redeemable in Marathon. Instead, it's meant to be used by Destiny 2 players.
The code rewards players a really cool emblem with the "M:\>START" design to use. It will be a great addition for almost anyone who has played Destiny 2 and other Bungie projects for a long time. There are rumors for another Marathon-themed emblem available for the players, but the code for it is yet to be made available. Once we get the code, it will be added to this list.
How to redeem Marathon codes?
The first step is to click on this link and go to the Bungie website.

To claim the emblem, open your Flair Collections inside Destiny 2.

Marathon has a couple of Twitch drops for fans to grab, even if it hasn't got anything to do with Marathon the game, and you can only get them for a limited time.
From April 11 to April 12, 4:pm PT, you have the chance to grab two specific items related to both Twitch and Destiny 2 by doing specific tasks.
So, let's not waste your time and jump into what exactly you need to do.
Every Marathon Twitch drop reward
![]()
To earn the Marathon Twitch drop rewards, all you have to do is join and watch any streamer participating in the reward scheme for several minutes.
By watching any Marathon stream for 15 minutes, you'll be rewarded with a Destiny 2 emblem based on Marathon. To get it, you need to make sure your Bungie account is linked to your Twitch account. If it isn't, you can follow the steps in your inventory the moment you unlock it to have it linked to all your accounts.
If you also subscribe to anyone watching Marathon in the Marathon Twitch directory from April 11 at 7:45 PT to April 12 at 16:00 PT, you'll also unlock a unique Twitch Badge for a single subscriber. It has to go to a creator, so if you subscribe to the official Marathon Twitch account, it might not work.
Outside of these two items, there is nothing else available through Twitch Drops, and once again, nothing actually for Marathon. For example, the alpha access is not being used as a Twitch drop, with Bungie asking you to do two specific things to get into the alpha and redeem a code, which you can find more details on here.
It feels like a bit of a letdown, honestly, but there's always the chance that as the game gets closer to its September 23rd release, Bungie might work with creators to offer actual in-game items for those who watch their favorite streamers. So watch this space,e and let's hope that more Twitch drops get added in the future.

We've all experienced the blues when you read the last word in a spiraling book series and close the chapter on not just a story but an entire chapter of your own life. Yet, few fandoms could attest to the aggressive emptiness that assaults you in the aftermath like The Wheel of Time community.
Reading the 15-book, four million-word epic is like sitting through the lives of thousands of actual people and the story of an entire age. If you're still aching for a story that features similar brush strokes to Robert Jordan's timeless fantasy, read ahead to find out about the 10 book series that might be a perfect substitute for The Wheel of Time.
10. Dune by Frank Herbert
![]()
Many similarities exist between Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time and Frank Herbert's Dune. The former has the Aes Sedai, while the latter has the Bene Gesserit. One features a fearsome warrior race known as the Aiel, while Dune introduces the Fremen and their Sandworms as the apex predators of the desert. Paul Atreides is destined to become the savior of Arrakis, while Rand al'Thor is the prophesied Dragon Reborn, fated to save and destroy the world. But while these surface analogs exist between the two works, The Wheel of Time and Dune couldn't be further apart in the way they interpret prophecy and archetypes.
So, pick up Dune for the Muad'Dib and the Fremen and the anti-establishment themes that permeate Herbert's prose — all of which put one in mind of The Wheel of Time — but stay for the author's important message in regards to savior types, false shepherds, and individuals who prop themselves up as a people's only means of salvation.
9. The Shadow of What Was Lost by James Islington
![]()
James Islington is fast becoming one of the most popular fantasy authors. You may know him as the brains behind the acclaimed 2023 novel The Will of the Many, but he actually began his career with 2014's The Shadow of What Was Lost, the first novel in the so-called Licanius trilogy, followed by 2017's An Echo of Things to Come and finished with 2019's The Light of All That Falls.
Many readers who pick up The Shadow of What Was Lost immediately notice similarities between it and The Wheel of Time, especially in the way Islington sets up his world and magic system. The parallels run so deep that some have even accused Islington of being derivative, though that's way off the mark considering where the story moves from there.
It's set in a world where the enigmatic Augurs, beings of immense magical power almost perceived as gods, once ruled over Andarra with an iron fist. As with all dictators, dissenting factions eventually rise, and the Augurs lose hold of their powers. They are ultimately overthrown, but those who ruled under them, beings of less magical talent called the Gifted, avoid their fate by surrendering to the rebels, who inscribed their Four Tenets into the very flesh of the Gifted, forcing them into absolute obedience. Now, 20 years after the war, a Gifted named Davian has to navigate through a world that sees him as a monster.
8. The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson
![]()
I said I would exclude obvious choices, but how could we possibly overlook The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson, which now only exists by the grace of a certain Robert Jordan who inspired Sanderson when he was just another kid obsessed with fantasy literature? Brandon would even go on to finish The Wheel of Time after Jordan's tragic departure in 2007, writing the last book in the series and dividing it into three volumes: The Gathering Storm, Towers of Midnight, and A Memory of Light.
It is quite the colossal undertaking for one storyteller to write a satisfying conclusion to their own popular series, but to have another young fantasy author come in and do it justice in a way that leaves almost the entire fanbase pleased… well, I don't have a word for it, but that's precisely what Sanderson did with The Wheel of Time.
And being such a massive fan, it's no wonder that Sanderson's own magnum opus, The Stormlight Archive, is usually compared to The Wheel of Time in terms of scale and ambition. A planned 10-book series, of which five have come out over the past decade, The Stormlight Archive takes place in an exotic fictional universe. It dials the epic factor up to eleven by telling a story of gods and heralds and mortal men in lengthy, tome-like installments.
7. Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn by Tad Williams
![]()
Tad Williams is one of the most influential authors in the high fantasy genre, and his work with Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn inspired a host of other contemporaries like George R.R. Martin, Christopher Paolini, and Patrick Rothfuss. The Wheel of Time contains certain callbacks to Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, and while Robert Jordan never explicitly cited Williams as an influence on his work, there are many similarities between the medieval world of Osten Ard and the post-apocalyptic landscape of the so-called Randland.
The trilogy follows multiple characters but mainly centers around Simon, an unwitting but adventurous kitchen scullion who gets swept into a conspiracy with the world's fate hanging in balance. Williams' prose is poetic, his storytelling is atmospheric, and his narrative hits all the marks you've come to expect from the genre without feeling derivative or clichéd. If you're looking for a fantasy tale that reimagines archetypal tropes in a well-paced and brilliantly structured story while making sure that none of it comes off as uninspired, then Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn is the series to pick up, having gone down as a masterwork of the speculative fiction domain since its release in the early '90s.
6. Lightbringer by Brent Weeks
![]()
The Lightbringer series takes place in a fictional world where the magic system is based on color. The sorcerers called Drafters harness light and channel it into different effects, with each color in the spectrum having unique properties and powers. This magic comes at a cost: Reduced life span and madness, which can take over a person's entire mind and compel them to go wild. Does that sound familiar?
While the rigid magic structure of The Lightbringer eerily parallels The Wheel of Time and the madness that comes upon channelers in that world when they tap into the tainted male half of the One Power, Lightbringer's narrative takes a different course from the get-go, dealing with a gritty, almost grim-dark universe where the laws of power are tilted and the game is rigged. What sets Lightbringer apart from many contemporaries is the genius way Brent Weeks flips the script and changes your perception about fundamental aspects of his worldbuilding and plot. Almost every installment in the series ends with a twist, and not all of them will be the kind you cheer on.
5. The Fifth Season (Broken Earth) by N.K. Jemisin
![]()
The Fifth Season, part of the Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemisin, is one of the most ambitious and well-received fantasy debuts of the last decade. The story takes place in an apocalyptic world where a recurring disaster known as the Fifth Season destroys civilization every few hundred years. In time, the people of the supercontinent known as the Stillness adapt to the harsh reality of their world, but not without making sacrifices to the natural order of things, being reduced to castes and warring ethnicities that aggravate their natural inclination to tribalism.
The story follows three different orogenes (people with the power to influence seismic energy to create or prevent temperatures and even indirectly affect the world's) as they navigate this fractured and treacherous place. Orogenes are shunned by society, which is why our first protagonist, Essun, a middle-aged woman, does everything she can to hide her powers. When her son inadvertently reveals his own abilities, Essun's husband kills him, causing her to set on a perilous journey across the Stillness. The other two characters are Syenite, a powerful orogene sent on a mission of discovery, and Damaya, a young girl with orogenic powers who gets taken away from her home to train in an institution dedicated to orogenes.
The Fifth Season was followed by The Obelisk Gate and The Stone Sky, which also garnered critical acclaim and cemented the Broken Earth trilogy as one of the best science fantasy trilogies of all time. The apocalyptic undertones combined with magic users who are hunted down because of their natural aptitude make this story a great alternative to The Wheel of Time.
4. The Echoes Saga by Philip C. Quaintrell
![]()
The Echoes Saga is a nine-book epic fantasy series that scratches every itch for the fans of works as The Lord of the Rings and The Wheel of Time. The world is expansive, the narrative scope is incomprehensibly large, the lore is intricate, and the characters are multi-layered and compelling. The Echoes Saga is fast-paced and full of action, letting readers binge all nine books without even realizing where one ends and another begins. There are themes of power, redemption, and fate set amidst large-scale battles that stretch entire kingdoms and continents. It checks every box for fans of traditional high fantasy novels but doesn't fail to incorporate those modern allusions to nuance that we've all come to love.
The story is set in the world of Verda, where mankind has ruled for over a thousand years by building on the ruins of an ancient elven civilization. But the millennium has given the mythic race some time for introspect, and they have come to realize the truth that will upset the balance of power forever: The elves are faster and stronger and possess greater magic, so perhaps the world should once again belong to them. As the world braces for the storm to come, our narrative puts the spotlight on Asher, a trained assassin and ranger who doesn't remember his past.
3. Elric of Melniboné by Michael Moorcock
![]()
It's hard to talk about Michael Moorcock's influence on pop culture through his Eternal Champion, Elric of Melniboné, without submitting to trivialization. Many contemporary writers, popular in their own right (a list that includes names like Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman), have cited him as an influence on their work. If you're intrigued by Chosen One archetypes that get scrutinized by the author's veiled study of historical replicas, then reading Elric of Melniboné is an absolute must.
The story takes you to an island kingdom called Melniboné. Centuries before Elric, Melniboné ruled the world with an iron fist, with the not-wholly-human Melnibonéans using their magical might and natural cunning to subdue the other human kingdoms. Many years later, Melniboné is a shadow of its former self, and Elric ascends as the 428th emperor.
Due to his physical ailments, Elric spent most of his youth in the royal library, letting him pierce the veil of his people's decadence and develop a sense of conscience. This makes him unpopular among his people, but Elric's defining trait as an antihero forms when he discovers Stormbringer, a sword that gives him fighting strength but feeds on the souls of sentient beings. It turns into a curse and a blessing for Elric, turning him into one of the most tragic heroes in all of speculative fiction.
2. Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson
![]()
Ambitious. Grim. Unflinching. Overwrought. Relentless. All these are appropriate characterizers for Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen, yet none can quite capture what it feels like to read through this ambitious 10-book saga. A world in upheaval. A conspiracy whose roots trace back to ancient gods. An ensemble of nuanced characters thrust into the thick of a conflict that threatens to engulf the world in flames. And a book series that subverts all expectations and undermines every established clause in the storytelling rulebook, favoring a unique approach.
You'll hear it from fans that "Erikson doesn't hold your hand" or "Malazan is the Dark Souls of fantasy literature," and there is a grain of truth here. Still, the experience isn't as daunting if you get through the first few hundred pages and accept that Erikson is not in the habit of explaining anything, with close to zero exposition in these novels. But when you do that and read through this epic saga—considered by some to be the most ambitious high fantasy story told since the days of Tolkien, and certainly comparable in scale to Robert Jordan—then Malazan Book of the Fallen can change your life.
1. The Sun Eater by Christopher Ruocchio
![]()
What if Star Wars met more traditional fantasy tales like The Name of the Wind? Christopher Ruocchio describes The Sun Eater as a blend of space opera and epic fantasy, taking place in a future where humanity has built a galactic empire and subjugated all lesser races. Ruocchio says the main inspiration for his protagonist, Hadrian Marlowe was, "What if Anakin Skywalker becoming Darth Vader is the right thing?"
Of course, you could swap Anakin's name with any other Chosen One who succumbs to the darkness within. The first book starts on a humble note, initially brought down by the paroxysms of a fatigued genre, but stick with Ruocchio and he'll soon turn his tale into one of the best science-fantasy book series you've ever come across, with an ambitious story that features a cast of unforgettable characters, epic action-packed moments, and a compelling character study of what it means to be the savior and destroyer of an entire universe.

The Jack of all Trades 2 Evolution is pretty similar to the first version. Instead of making your selected card extremely strong in one position, the boosts make them versatile. While you can opt for the cards listed above, there's a viable scenario for you to use it on an evo chain. That way, you can improve a low-rated item, give it boosts from this evolution, and include it in another future release.

The Marathon reveal trailer is fast approaching but thanks to the internet, we know there will be some kind of Alpha for the game, with keys being given away for it quite soon.
The news comes from various creators and the Marathon Discord, where Bungie will have a signup for the alpha codes in some way on the official Discord, and in other places as well.
But if you are out of the loop, miss the upcoming reveal stream, or don't watch a creator that has codes—where can you get them? Well, let's run you through it.
How to sign up for the Marathon alpha
![]()
It appears as though a vast majority of codes will be given out by various creators on Twitch and YouTube, with the content creators deciding how to give out the codes during the reveal stream. If you fail to find a creator giving out codes or miss the reveal stream, then there are other ways to sign up as well.
The Marathon official Discord has also announced that they plan to share a link on Discord sometime after the presentation on April 12, which will be a chance to be selected for the game's closed alpha playtest. It appears that using this method does not guarantee access, and it will be down to RNG for you to be chosen for it.
You can join the Discord server by clicking the link here.
Outside of these two methods, nothing else appears to be available when it comes to alpha signups. The game was revealed to be coming out on Sept. 23 though, which means its coming out the same day as Borderlands 4.
Where to redeem your Marathon alpha code
There are no codes per say and instead, you'll be given a link that will take you to the sign up page. Once you sign up that link will expire, so make sure you take your time inputting your details.
Not a lot of information about the alpha has been announced as of yet though, but we do know it'll start on April 23, and that it'll only be for North America for now— but we don't know how long it'll last, and if anyone will be able to share gameplay. As such, as those details are revealed and information comes out, we shall update this article in due course.

Forsaken in Roblox is a game that feels a lot like Dead by Daylight and other survival games. It takes the classic killer versus survivor setup and adds its own unique touch, making it fun to play again and again. If you're figuring out which killer or survivor might be the best fit for you, our Forsaken Characters tier list below can help you decide.
Forsaken Characters Tier List
![]()
As we can see in this Forsaken Characters tier list, not all Characters in Forsaken were created equal. Some are good, some are great, and some are downright unplayable. For example, Shedletsky is the easiest Survivor to play and easily outplays any Killer, while Two Time doesn't even have any active abilities.
Forsaken Survivors Tier List
Below is a complete and detailed list of all Survivors. Here, we will take a look at all of them, listed from best to worst:
Technically, none of the Survivors are bad. Some just require more knowledge and experience to play properly. Except Dusekkar. Dusekkar is horrible.
Forsaken Killers Tier List
Below is a complete and detailed list of all Killers. Here, we will take a look at all of them, listed from best to worst:
All Killers are good. Jason is at the bottom simply because he is simpler than the others and doesn't have the same outplay potential. On the other hand, c00lkidd is the best because of his offensive abilities and versatility when chasing players.
And that is all for our Forsaken Characters tier list. Check out our Forsaken Codes for some freebies that can help you unlock the Killer or Survivor you want.

Despite being a puzzle game, Blue Prince has a useful crafting system that can be utilized in the Workshop.
The Workshop room allows you to utilize different items that might not have any use on their own. As you gain access to new areas and locations, you'll find items that will have little to no use on their own. This is where the Workshop room comes in, as you can combine different items to craft useful tools. Let's take a look at all the available recipes, along with the items required to complete them.
Complete list of Workshop items in Blue Prince
You'll find a crafting table to help you combine the items in your inventory. The core process is simple: find the correct items for a required recipe and then combine them to create a new item. Some recipes use two ingredients, while a few others require more.
Knowing the ingredients and what products you can get is useful during the draft, as you can pick them according to your needs. Always aim for items like Metal Detector that can be used to produce more than one item in the Workshop.

The biggest challenge related to the Workshop is drafting the room in the first place. Here are a few tips and tricks to keep in mind.

The UI Update could be Schedule 1's next major patch if the latest teaser on social media is to be believed.
While players have been busy enjoying the recent update, some have been asking about what's next in store. If the game's official Trello is to be believed, there are some ambitious plans, and any of those additions will be welcome news for the community. As things stand, the game's UI could be overhauled completely as part of the next update, and we could get it pretty soon.
Schedule 1 UI update release date
We have previously witnessed Tyler prioritize weekends for releasing a content update. While update v.0.3.4 was delayed slightly, its beta launch was supposed to take place on a weekend. If Tyler follows the same pattern, it could arrive either on Saturday, April 19, or Sunday, April 20. While there's still a day left in the current weekend, it's unlikely to go live this week.
As usual, the update will be released first on the game's beta version. If you're unsure how to enjoy beta access, make sure to check out our detailed guide. After a couple of days, it should be added to the full version.
What to expect from Schedule 1's UI Update?
As the name suggests, the update will focus on overhauling the existing UI. The extent of the changes will depend on how much the new UI shifts from its existing design. The last update was all about new POIs that are closely tied to decorations and inventory management.
The official roadmap has exciting features like cartels, dynamic weather, and new drugs, among other proposed additions. We are yet to have a new type of drug, so it could be included pretty soon for the players to enjoy. So far, the only content teased by Tyler features the UI change, but I am sure there will be a few more tweaks that will be part of the upcoming update.
