Greek mythology meets Dead Space in new dark fantasy Metroidvania game

Somber Echoes is the newly announced sci-fi Metroidvania game from developers Rock Pocket Games and Lav Games. The 2.5D game incorporates many unique characteristics, which takes a bit to digest, as players board a Greco-Roman spaceship and face some truly gross David Cronenberg-type interdimensional baddies along the way. For fans of the genre, Somber Echoes represents a blending of inspiration that infuses aesthetic elements of Dead Space with modern Metroidvania design and gameplay.

Volume 2 of the Elden Ring Manga Continues to Delightfully Twist Events

While the Elden Ring: The Road to the Erdtree manga adaptation currently running is a gag one, the comedic adventures capture the experience of playing and volume 2 exemplifies that. It's almost like now that it really is established and moving forward, the chapters captured in this book really do more to play around with things we already know to be true from the game.

Editor's Note: There are spoilers for both Elden Ring and volume 2 of the gag manga based on it below.

For those catching up, the Elden Ring manga follows a Tarnished named Aseo who behaves either like a player totally new to the game or someone going through a run and goofing around. Likewise, all of the normally stoic and serious individuals you'd encounter are a little more warped and silly than usual. With the second volume of the manga, it really feels like it is leaning more into some possibly obscure and fun elements that ordinary people might have missed.

One of the first examples involves Godrick the Grafted. Instead of a typical boss fight being shown, Godrick turns the battle against Aseo and fellow Tarnished Nepheli Loux into a grafting crafting contest. Now, to start, having Nepheli here is a fun nod. This is because she's out to defeat Godrick at her father's bidding in the game, and that carries over here too. But what really struck me while reading is how this "fight" parallels the actual battle. Once you hit the second phrase, he grafts a dragon onto himself. Well, sure enough, the dragon comes up during the first part of the grafting contest, and Godrick does attach it to himself for the second portion. It's such a clever way of preserving a concept and using it in a different, more humorous way given how it works out for him here.

It also means some small references showing that the manga is following the questlines in the same way a player would. For example, we met Rogier in the first volume. In the game, we'd meet him before Godrick at Stormveil as well. And here, he's in Roundtable Hold. Just as in the game, he's again incapable of moving, so he'll again set up camp. While Aseo doesn't end up getting his rapier, Rogier does again offer to sell useful, magical things.

This also applies to Roderika. Again, this is another case of this adaptation pulling from an optional questline as fodder for another humorous situation. She appeared ahead of Aseo arriving at Stormveil, and we see here in the manga that the action of again getting and delivering the Chrysalids' Memento means another chance to interact with her and, just as in the game, influence her decision to head to Roundtable Hold. It also involves a section that is actually one of the more heartfelt and genuine in this volume, while still being quite silly.

It all really makes the Elden Ring manga so much more fun to read. Because there are these connections, it really is calling back to events you may remember. The fact that they can resemble situations so closely, while still involving an original story, really helps take the parody and its humor to another level.

Volume 2 of Elden Ring: The Road to the Erdtree is available now, and volume 3 of the manga will arrive on May 21, 2024.

Review: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a generational game that fully lives up to the expectations set by its predecessor. In fact, it is a much better and more enjoyable game for me, due to the open-world environments and meaningful minigames like Queen's Blood. But if there's one part that sticks with me weeks after beating the game, it is the messy FFVII Rebirth ending.

Screenshot by Siliconera

Prior to the launch of FFVII Rebirth, legendary Final Fantasy Director Tetsuya Nomura noted his "nervousness" about the title, more specifically, its ending and the fate of certain characters. I feel he was right to be nervous in the end. The ending left me feeling a bit confused and uncertain about major elements of the story. I think things weren't clear enough about Square Enix's intent with certain characters and what would happen to them moving forward.

The ending honestly lacked focus and a goal from my standpoint. It tried too much to do a lot without accomplishing much in the process. It felt wishy-washy and like the developers wanted to go a certain route but then also play with a different route. I didn't appreciate the "have our cake and eat it too" mentality. But it is hard to talk about the ending without going into full spoilers, so let's dive in if you are ready.

How to play as Sephiroth FFVII Rebirth
Screenshot by Siliconera

What I didn't love about the FFVII Rebirth ending

Editor's Note: Full spoilers lie ahead for the FFVII Rebirth story, especially the ending.

The crux of my issue with the conclusion of this game comes from the obvious part of Aerith's fate. I'll be upfront. I wanted Aerith to live in this incarnation and maybe even have another character take her place for a twist. However, I was okay with her dying if the game played with it in some way, such as having Cloud twist the knife. After all, the story even played with that idea for majority of the game.

Unfortunately, the conclusion toyed with both sides and didn't ultimately come to a focused conclusion. The ending literally begins with Sephiroth about to stab Aerith, Cloud running up, and me as the player supposedly saving her. I was ecstatic when this happened. Then there were all these other timelines and seemingly showing her dead, then alive, then dead again. Then I think she's dead and she joins Cloud to beat Sephiroth at the end.

It is such a confusing mess. And then when I think she is alive for sure, it switches back to everyone mourning her but Cloud who still sees her. I hated this as well because the mourning felt rushed and not worthy of her supposed death. It almost seems like the developer is trying to tell us she is alive, but she may not be. The fact I walked away from the game having to assume she is dead, at least in the main timeline, is problematic. I would've preferred the story just stuck to her living or dying and not making it such a Schrödinger's Cat situation.

Can you return to Midgar FFVII Rebirth
Screenshot by Siliconera

Fortunately, not all hope is lost. I know the next game will likely address the ending right from start, but I would prefer to see that happen beforehand in DLC. DLC centering around Zack, an origin story for Sephiroth, or whatever could address this ending. It could even be in the new ending for the game, similar to what happened with Intermission.

My current hypothesis is Aerith is dead in the main timeline, but alive in another one, possibly in Zack's. This would allow players to play as her occasionally in the final game, but still have the impact of her loss. I wish this was confirmed already, so I'm hoping DLC can shed some light on this matter and, hopefully, fix my issues with this messy FFVII Rebirth ending.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is available right now exclusively for the PS5.

The Splatoon 3 Side Order DLC Is Better Than the Single-Player Campaign

When Splatoon 2 released, it also started a tradition of the series getting an additional mode and storyline as an add-on after the fact. At that time, it wasn't all that different from the main game's execution, just with a different story and missions. Now that the Splatoon 3 Side Order DLC is here, I can't help thinking its execution and design feels better than the main single-player campaign.

While the main Return of the Mammalians Splatoon 3 single-player campaign behaves like past entries in the series, where you go through stages in hub areas and eventually face bosses, Side Order is a roguelike. You're introduced to it with a single Palette, which represents a weapon and possible Color Chips you gain access to. You head into a multi-floor tower, with "boss" encounters on set floor. Said Color Chips are earned via completing floors you choose, with players able to choose the difficulty of the challenge to get the one associated with it to buff their abilities. Each "run" at the tower is different, due to the builds you accrue changing depending upon what you happen upon. While the objectives might eventually feel like you're going through the same challenges, they're brief enough and scaling in difficulty in such a way that I didn't mind it.

In true roguelike fashion, when you run out of lives, you're kicked out of the tower and sent to the bottom. However, you're doing so with the opportunity to be in a better position next time. Items you collected are transformed into Prlz. These can be spent to unlock permanent upgrades like an extra life or more armor, so you're  reentering the tower in a better position. If you reached and beat one of the bosses, you'll get a key for the lockers to unlock a new Palette. This could mean access to a weapon you like better or are more comfortable using. It makes the prospect of coming back and trying again appealing.

The roguelike nature of Splatoon 3 Side Order helps make it appealing, but the fact that popular Splatoon 2 protagonists Pearl and Marina return alongside the NPC Acht also assists in making it memorable. The duo were such fun protagonists in their original game, and I really appreciated interacting with them again. Especially when you consider how Deep Cut in the main Splatoon 3 single-player campaign ended up taking an antagonistic role. The concept of a creation running wild and another element threatening the world provides a sense of drive to continue.

This isn't even taking into account how much fun it is to come back to the Splatoon 3 Side Order DLC experience, compared to the single-player campaign that I never touched again after beating it. Failure never feels discouraging, because like any roguelike there is steady progress always being made. Beating it doesn't make a difference, because it still feels like there's more to earn and unlock. If not Palettes, then by buying equipment or cosmetics from the Cipher's Siftings shop for the main game.

It all comes down to Splatoon 3 Side Order feeling more fulfilling to me than the single-player campaign did. I really enjoyed the approach, with the challenges scaling well and the different abilities and loadouts allowing for some fun builds. It made me want to not only play once, but keep playing so I could experiment with different tactics and earn more fun things.

Splatoon 3 and its Side Order DLC expansion are available now.

     Southwest Florida codes March 2024

March 2, 2024: We're standing in the road looking for new Southwest Florida codes.

What are the current Southwest Florida codes? In this RPG, you can become whoever you want to be. More often than not, though, the goal is to earn enough cash to buy the best ride that money can buy. Some codes will give you more than enough to afford a brand new car, while others will put you closer to buying your dream vehicle.

To afford this lifestyle, you'll need cold, hard cash, and with these Southwest Florida codes, you'll have plenty to spend on nice cars in this Roblox experience. Of course, there are other similar games available, so if you'd rather take to the crime-filled streets, we have all the current Da Hood codes and Pet Simulator 99 codes. Or if you prefer something a little more chill, then these Berry Avenue codes may help you get the best outfit.
