RNG Gets in the Way of Dead Finger Dice's Fun

I wish I liked Dead Finger Dice more, and with it being a roguelike take on Yahtzee with customizable dice, I would have thought it was for me! The aesthetic is amazing. The idea is cool. Yahtzee is always a solid dice game. The problem is that while all roguelikes feature some degree of luck being on your side, it almost feels like RNG is perhaps too overwhelming here. If everything is on your side and it feels like the billionaire opponents aren't cheating too, it's great. But I felt like that was too rare a situation.

In Dead Finger Dice, we're trapped on a yacht for the sake of amusing billionaires who also seem to resemble classic monsters like Nosferatu and Medusa. When we're summoned from our meager, prisoner's cell, we're put in front of one of them and forced to place a game that resembles Yahtzee. We roll five dice, with three rerolls possible, in the hopes of getting a better "hand" than our opponent. As we do, we bet fingers to determine who wins or loses. When one opponent is all out of fingers, the match ends. If we win, we get to return to our cabin and craft new dice with our won fingers to perhaps "cheat" our way to victory with their properties. If we lose, all of our fingers are cut off, we're tossed overboard, and the game restarts with a new person and any resources you "banked" in the cell due to the permadeath feature.

Now in general, the concept is quite sound! By combining materials with fingers, we can create dice that get additional effects. For example, there could be BOUNCE to make the dice bounce. SCRATCH increases the value of the number on the die face by one if its value is under 6. SWITCH will switch that die with the current boss' highest value one. FINGER STEAL steals a finger from your opponent if it is possible. And the fingers you have influence things too. For example, the most basic level 1 finger involves a 50% chance of an effect triggering. But since we do have effects that have a certain percent change of triggering and may not even guarantee a better position, it might feel a little frustrating.

Yes, roguelikes test you like this. You never know what deck you'll run, levels you'll face, or bosses will appear sometimes. But in the case of other titles, there are certain degrees of skill that come up and you feel like the challenge can be fair. Like sure, there's uncertainty and you don't know what you'll take with you to assist your run. But you do know who you'll face, and there aren't odds against you at every turn. Some elements of it can be mitigated here by hoarding away resources and crafting dice, but I felt like sometimes it was a bit much. 

It might sound odd to say so too in a game about cheating when playing in high-stakes Yahtzee matches against billionaires, but the RNG in Dead Finger Dice makes it feel like they're cheating too. This isn't so much of an issue with the early foes like Nosferaone. But against Bobby Froggic and Kraangle? Absolutely. 

Also, as an aside, I didn't enjoy playing Dead Finger Dice on my handheld gaming PC as much as I hoped I would. When I played, there was no controller support. It seemed odd! Playing it with the tiny, built-in mouse pad on the controller isn't the most comfortable, so I'm hoping that is updated soon.

Dead Finger Dice features an interesting aesthetic and can be fun for folks who enjoy Yahtzee, but I feel the randomness of it all really makes it difficult to truly enjoy it. Yes, we can influence things and rig the game. Even so, RNG rules here. And if you already get an idea a run is going wrong, there's not much you can do. On the plus side, it is quite an affordable game at only $5 normally, so at least it isn't too expensive if you want to take a chance on rolling these dice. Perhaps after a few patches, it might feel a little more balanced.

You'll gain different blueprints to craft with resources, and upgrading your Workshop benches and stations will allow you to complete the more advanced recipes. This guide will give you a complete picture of all available Workshop upgrades, along with the required items.

Your Workshop can be divided into seven different benches/stations.

The Workbench is your most basic station that's available by default.

The Straight Record quest in ARC Raiders makes you roam around Dam Battlegrounds in search of three different switches.

While the format of the Straight Record quest is simple, the exact locations can be slightly confusing. This guide will help you find them all quite easily and complete the quest to earn the rewards.

ARC Raiders Straight Record quest walkthrough

The Straight Record quest can be broken down into two major parts.

  • Locate the old EMP Device
  • Disable three Power Switches

Old EMP Device location

The EMP device is located in the northern part of the Dam Battlegrounds map. The device is located near the Hydroponic Dome complex. Once you find the device, interact with it, and the quest will automatically update. Your next task is to disable the power switches spread all over the map.

The region near the Dome can have plenty of ARC enemies, so be on your toes. I will recommend going in with a free loadout to reduce the risk. This location also has vital resources like Mushrooms, which are required for upgrading Scrappy.

Power Switch locations

The first switch is located on a hill to the left of the EMP device. I have marked the location of all three switches on the screenshot above (marked as 1, 2, and 3) to help you find them easily. Get close to the switch to interact with it.

To find the second switch, go back to the EMP device and go left. You'll find a generator. Get on top of it, and jump to get on the second floor of a broken building. Move forward, jump again, and you'll find the second switch.

Drop down, and keep moving forward. You'll come across a pole and a wire. Follow the wire, and it will lead you to the third switch. Turn it off, and return to the EMP device to finish the Straight Record quest.

The location has drone ARCs that you should first destroy; otherwise, you could end up dead while trying to complete the quest.

The What We Left Behind quest in ARC Raiders takes you a fair bit of time to access, but it's pretty easy to complete as long as you know what to do.

The quest has multiple tasks spread across different maps, so you'll need to have access to all of them. The gist is to find rare loot in all the marked locations, and this guide will help you with the correct locations.

ARC Raiders What We Left Behind quest walkthrough

The What We Left Behind quest requires you to look for rare loot in the following locations:

  • South Swamp Outpost
  • Raider Camp
  • Bilguun's Hideout

Our first location is on the Dam Battlegrounds map in the swamp area towards the south. I have marked the location for your convenience. This location has plenty of ARC enemies, so you'll need to take care of them before jumping in to get your loot.

Raider Camp

The second task involves finding two containers in the Raider Camp section of the map. Travel to the Buried City map first, and then look for the Parking Garage in the New District area. The spot can be found north of the Space Travel building, and take the zipline to go down. Loot any two containers to retrieve the items you find in them. Like the previous location, there will be plenty of enemies waiting for you (including possible human opponents).

Bilguun's Hideout

Our final location is situated right next to the Container Storage area in Spaceport. You'll have to loot any high-tier item to complete the task. However, this part of the quest was bugged for me. The high-tier loot failed to register when I added the item to the inventory. If the same happens to you, the only option is to extract and revisit the area. Attempting it once again fixed the quest and completed it.

Here are all the rewards that you'll obtain, aside from coins and XP.

  • Angled Grip II
  • Muzzle Brake Grip II
  • Angled Grip II

Football Manager 25 delayed

Football Manager 26's global launch is not too far away as of writing, as the football management franchise is all set to make a grand comeback.

After missing out last year, Sports Interactive will be releasing this year's version on PC, consoles, and mobile devices. Most of the interest will once again be for the PC version, which is currently having its Advanced Access Beta.

This guide will help you keep track of the exact moment of release.

Football Manager 26 release countdown

Football Manager 26 will be released worldwide on Nov. 4 on PC and consoles. The release date has been known for quite some time, but if you're confused about the exact time, the following countdown will be helpful.

As of writing, Sports Interactive has yet to announce the exact launch time. However, Football Manager 26 might be following the exact timings as the Advanced Access Beta. Here are those timings, as applicable for different parts of the world.

  • 12pm PDT
  • 2pm CDT
  • 3pm EDT
  • 8pm UTC/BT
  • 9pm CET

If Sports Interactive decides to change the launch schedule ahead of the global release, we will duly update it on our guide.

What to expect from Football Manager 26

Football Manager 26's Advanced Access Beta has allowed us to get an early glimpse of what to expect from this year's version. While the core gameplay remains the same, here are some changes you will find (compared to Football Manager 24).

  • Completely revamped match engine based on Unity.
  • New tactics that allow you to create in-possession and out-of-possession variations.
  • Better Transfer room.
  • New UI
  • Official league license for the Premier League, which includes all 20 teams, player images, and more.

While the Advanced Access Beta has had many optimization issues, Sports Interactive has been quick to roll out fixes to solve the problems. I am hopeful that the full version will be more stable and have fewer bugs.
