Dragon's Dogma 2 is Capcom's most popular single-player Steam launch

Dragon's Dogma 2 was slated to become one of Capcom's biggest game releases on Steam well before the game officially launched. The latest RPG from the esteemed Japanese gaming giant was expected to both carry over fans from the original title, which was released way back in 2012, as well as add hordes of new players who were entering the world of Dragon's Dogma for the very first time. Now, merely a day after the game launched, it's already broken single-player Steam records for the company.

hyper mega tech super pocket review evercade

We've covered Blaze Entertainment's efforts to build a licensed retrogame platform with physical cartridges in the Evercade, but for some players, even that cost of entry was a bit too steep. It's possible, then, that the company's latest device could be of interest. Released under the "Hyper Mega Tech!" branding instead of Evercade, the Super Pocket brings the price tag down below $60, and it packs its own built-in lineups of Capcom or Taito games to serve as a standalone release. But that Evercade cartridge slot? That makes it a lot more intriguing than most low-end games machines.

We were expecting perhaps for the Super Pocket to take a few design cues from the original Evercade, itself a cheaper device than the EXP with similar components. Instead, it goes for the more durable and modern look of the EXP, a choice that makes a lot of sense and is better. Returning briefly to the original Evercade to compare for this piece showed us just how far manufacturer Blaze has come in the design of its devices, learning a lot about materials and ergonomics along the way.

The color schemes, chosen to go with the built-in game collections, are a lot of fun. The Capcom edition uses the signature royal blue and yellow. The Taito model runs with a teal and black scheme. And already, we're seeing it's not a rote template; Blaze used teal buttons on the black faceplate for Taito and kept the whole front blue for Capcom. If they keep iterating for potential future models, that could be pleasant to see.

hyper mega tech super pocket review evercade

What we also expected? Tech spec downgrades. And it doesn't seem like they're here in a significant enough way to notice! We tested the full gamut of Evercade cartridges on the device, including some that the other hardware doesn't run the best. The Super Pocket didn't flinch. Some of the original PlayStation titles in the library frankly don't run well through their own technical failings, but our experience was indistinguishable between hardware. We'll have to return to this when we're able to try out the upcoming Nintendo 64 emulation, but for now? We're impressed.

Each Super Pocket has a built-in library of arcade games. Capcom titles return after their appearance on the Evercade EXP, making clear that this sort of licensing is apparently a lot easier for Blaze than a cartridge. The standouts in this collection are Street Fighter II': Hyper Fighting, Ghouls 'n Ghosts and the 1942 trilogy. Capcom dominated arcades in the late '80s and '90s, and for good reason: these games stand the test of time.

There's also Final Fight, which we like a lot but more for its co-op play which isn't possible on the Super Pocket. Strider and Bionic Commando are here, too, along with Wolf of the Battlefield: MERCS and Forgotten Worlds. Our favorite of the bunch is Captain Commando, a criminally overlooked beat-'em-up that lets you play as a baby in a mech.

The Taito model has all the usual suspects from the company's arcade heyday. The front of the box shouts about Space Invaders and Bubble Bobble, which makes sense, as no other Taito properties have nearly as much global popularity. Puzzle Bobble (also known as Bust A Move) is here too. The Taito collection skews a bit older, with more '80s games joining 1978's Space Invaders in the bunch. This means a different sort of sensibility than the Capcom set.

hyper mega tech super pocket review evercade

The remaining arcade inclusions have less consistent player awareness, but we know some people who love them. They are: Operation Wolf, Rastan, The NewZealand Story, Cadash, Chack'n Pop, Don Doko Don, Elevator Action, The Fairyland Story, Football Champ, Growl, Volfied, Kiki Kaikai, The Legend of Kage and Liquid Kids. As you can see, the Taito collection makes up for its less-known lineup with a larger selection of releases.

Both collections feature almost all arcade games, with one console cameo tacked on. Capcom adds NES Mega Man, while Taito includes Genesis release Space Invaders '91. We imagine Mega Man is the most affordable way Blaze could put the Mega Man logo on the box, which makes sense at retail, but Space Invaders '91 is a harder inclusion to explain.

So where are the cost reductions in the Super Pocket, then? The answer appears to be build quality. It's durable, in a Nintendo 2DS sort of way, made so that kids can't break it. But adults will notice a few things! The tinny speaker emits noises accurately, but not really with a robust sound you'd want to experience it if you have other choices. The shoulder buttons are… there, if you need them for cartridge compatibility, but they're in the one awkward position available to put them and need a peculiar amount of leverage to press.

The main concern is likely the buttons. They're functional, but a bit stiff and unresponsive at times. It's the sort of setup that would be totally fine with games that are more about decisions than reflexes! Unfortunately, that remains the weakness of the Evercade game library, with its focus on arcade action. And the built-in Super Pocket games exclusively fall into this category. When testing a game we know well, Taito classic Puzzle Bobble, the cursor would blow past our target with a simple light touch.

hyper mega tech super pocket review evercade

The Super Pocket supports an "Easy Mode" option, which is a streamlined setting to turn all the arcade games' dip switches down to their most forgiving settings. This is, we presume, to make the device more approachable to young children, so it can be something of an entry point to retro games. We can confirm that it does what it says, letting us feel for once in our lives like we're good at Street Fighter II. Combined with a form factor that's definitely made for smaller hands, it could make for an intriguing kid gift.

(It should be noted, though: both devices carry a PEGI 12 rating for the included games. Nothing here is really egregious, but there's fighting and guns and explosions in some titles, so keep that in mind if you're handing one to a toddler or something.)

We don't mind the 4-by-3 screen of the Super Pocket. In many ways, this makes more sense for most games! It's nice to see Blaze find a supplier for them! And while the separate Hyper Mega Tech! branding is a bit strange, the idea that they're reserving the Evercade name for higher-quality builds at least shows they're sensitive to that stuff.

The Hyper Mega Tech! Super Pocket is available now for $59, in Capcom and Taito models. It's compatible with the Evercade cartridge library. For more Evercade coverage, including recommendations for which carts to pick up first, check out our archive.

PlayStation Portal Promo

The PlayStation Portal has been out for a few months now, and it's a fascinating device. It's a clear attempt by Sony to produce a new handheld system, but it's clear that it's lacking compared to other devices on the market.

The PlayStation Portal has an odd concept. It's a handheld device for playing PS5 games using Remote Play, streaming from the console itself. To Sony's credit, there is something worthwhile in this concept. The failure of the Vita suggests Sony don't want to simply release a standard handheld in the same vein. Meanwhile, shifts in the handheld market show that change is required anyway.

Take a look at the Nintendo Switch, for example. After decades of supporting a separate home console and handheld, Nintendo combined the two, shifting their development strategy significantly. This strategy has proven successful though, with the Switch going on to become the third best-selling console of all time.

The Steam Deck has followed suit, with its promise of letting players take their entire Steam library anywhere they go. Valve's offer isn't exactly the same as Nintendo's, but the principle remains the same. The most successful handheld systems are complimentary to the home experience now, allowing easy access to the same library wherever you are.

The PlayStation Portal is Sony's attempt to replicate this. On paper, it's the same idea. Take your entire PS5 library on the go. Simply load up the device, connect to your PS5 and play anything over wi-fi. But that's also the central problem with the device: it requires you to be tethered to a PS5.

The Switch and the Steam Deck both have the advantage of being truly portable. The Switch is a self-contained device. Once you remove it from the dock, it is now a handheld system you can walk out the house with. You can play Super Mario Bros Wonder on the train and nothing can stop you. While the Steam Deck requires some additional setup, ie. downloading your Steam games to it, it also can be taken anywhere without issue. You don't even need to own a gaming PC to make use of it.

The PlayStation Portal cannot truly be considered a portable device. The requirement to have your PS5 running the games in the background prevents that. You can't grab the Portal before you head out for the bus, you have to make sure you've turned the console on at home before you leave. Most importantly, you need to have a PS5 in the first place, which may not be the case for everyone looking to buy the Portal.

Image via Sony

Admittedly, I had some misconceptions about how the Portal worked when it was first announced. With the requirement of the PS5, I thought it would only connect within a certain radius of your home. Thankfully, this is not the case, as it uses wi-fi that can be accessed from anywhere, but this also raises its own issues.

For example, I'm someone who's likely to take a handheld system any time I plan to take a long trip. When I took a long-haul flight last year, it lacked wi-fi. While this did not stop my trusty Switch, it would have rendered the PlayStation Portal functionally useless. The key benefit of a handheld falls apart when you're at the mercy of public wi-fi access.

The problems with the Portal could have been mitigated with two extra options. While cloud streaming of games through PlayStation Plus won't solve the issue of spotty wi-fi, it would remove the need for your PS5 to be sitting in rest mode for weeks on end while you travel. After all, simply forgetting to turn the console on at home can halt the Portal's use even if you can find reliable public wi-fi access. Especially if you're like me and hate leaving it in Rest Mode.

Even more useful would be the ability to download games directly to the Portal. Sure, this may be a problem for some of the beefier PS5 games out there, but there could be an allowance for games that meet a certain performance standard. Or a rating system similar to the Steam Deck Verified check. It would be perfect for smaller scale games, especially indies. It's baffling that this was never considered as a design consideration during development.

Image via Sony

In its current state, the PlayStation Portal's main use is a device to keep playing PS5 games while someone else uses the TV. However, buying an entire device just to do this is pointless. Remote Play can be done just as easily through your phone, with the ability to connect a DualSense. Buying a whole device for this is unnecessary.

It's a real shame that the PlayStation Portal is so limited. There is a clear market here. The success of the Switch and Steam Deck both show that people want the convenience of taking their game library wherever they go. The PlayStation Portal could be the perfect way to do the same thing with PS5 games. But tying it so closely to a home system makes it fall short of that dream.

The PlayStation Portal is available now.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Remove ScarsScars are an optional cosmetic feature in many RPGs, including Dragon's Dogma 2, but some scars in this game are special. If you want to remove either your Arisen's or Pawn's scars in Dragon's Dogma 2, here's what you need to know. Dragon's Dogma 2: How to remove scars Screenshot: PC Invasion If, after finishing your character creations for your Arisen and Pawn, you don't like your scars, you can remove them at any barberie. These are the only areas in the game where you can change your appearance. The first one you come across in Dragon's Dogma 2 is Clovis's Barberie in Vernworth. It costs 10,000 Gold to "Give Markings" which is how you edit or remove your scars. You can also buy the Art of Metamorphosis, which is used to change everything about your Pawn or Arisen, from Neomith in the Vernworth Pawn Guild, but it costs 500 RC. Either way, you'll need to know how to farm Gold and RC fast. How to rem...

Dragon's Dogma 2 Locked Farmhouse Outside VernworthThere is a farmhouse north of Vernworth that is locked and very difficult to get in to. I've gotten into the locked Farmhouse outside of Vernworth in Dragon's Dogma 2 so I'm equipped to help you do the same. Dragon's Dogma 2 locked farmhouse: How to get in Screenshot: PC Invasion The locked farmhouse I'm referring to is north of Vernworth in the farm fields right before the bridge. Use the image above to confirm the location. The problem we're facing is the door is locked — it's actually blocked by a piece of wood — and it's difficult to know how to break the wood to get in. I tried levitating as a Mage to get in from the roof and I tried using a Steady Shot as an Archer to shoot the wood, but neither of those techniques work. Screenshot: PC Invasion There is only one way to get into this farmhouse and it's through the sewer which is found directly under the bridge to the north of the farmhouse. Again, this is ...

honkai star rail hoyoverse fate type moon

In a conversation between Nasu Kinoko (of Type-Moon and Fate fame) and David Jiang (of Honkai: Star Rail), the two discuss what they like about each other's works and how Type-Moon has influenced Jiang's creative process. This entire conversation can be read in Japanese on Denfaminico.

To start with, David Jiang states that he grew up with Type Moon's works, and cites Unlimited Blade Works in particular as an inspiration. He really likes Archer and Lancer. He also cannot deny that Clara and Svarog in Honkai: Star Rail aren't homages of Illya and Berserker from the Fate series. Their similarities was the subject of many jokes when Honkai: Star Rail first went live.

As for Nasu, he has also stated that he played and enjoyed HoYoVerse games. In the beginning, he approached it from a place of "superiority and arrogance," as he wanted to see what kind of content could be built using a foundation of Japanese otaku culture. However, as he continued playing, he realized that HoYoVerse games are an otaku's dreams come true. He recognizes the passion and skills that HoYoVerse's developers and programmers put into the game and thanks them. He also realized that HoYoVerse was serious with its "Tech Otakus Save the World" slogan.

Nasu also notes that HoYoVerse created Honkai: Star Rail with the idea that this is going to be a game that'll go on for a very long time. This was something that he also tried to keep in mind when he initially created Fate/Grand Order. He wants players to be able to play it without any worries about it ending service. An RPG should feature a vast world, but the developers also need to spend time creating a background that'll allow for an infinity of stories. In that sense, he immediately felt that HoYoVerse did a lot of preparation when it came to Honkai: Star Rail's setting and lore.

Jiang confirms that he and the Star Rail team did a lot of work in advance and that a lot of characters and factions debuting in Version 2.0's Penacony were actually teased way back in Version 1.0. Both creators have a high level of appreciation and respect for each other's work, and they genuinely enjoy games for the other company. At the beginning of the interview, Nasu says that his friend wants to know if Klee will get a buff soon. Jiang replied that he couldn't promise anything, but he'd pass the message along to the Genshin Impact team. Time will tell if this mutual respect and appreciation will lead to an official crossover or collaboration event down the line.

Honkai: Star Rail is readily available on the PS5, Windows PC, and mobile devices, and Fate/Grand Order is also readily available on mobile devices.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Bermudo Featured ImageChoices will make or break your reputation, allegedly. Will you be the hero or the villain of this story? Well, either way, start with little by little, and today's step regards a strange figure named Bermudo in Dragon's Dogma 2. Should you let him go once you encounter him? Let's ponder this decision for a bit. Dragon's Dogma 2: Who is Bermudo and how to find him First of all, Bermudo is a stalker that will follow you across Vernworth during the night after your initial arrival to the city – whether it is by ox or by foot. However, you won't get a quest alerting you about this stalking. Quite the contrary. You see, if you have a Pawn or a group of Pawns with you, there is a chance that one of them will point out that there is a shadowy figure following you, which will trigger the quest named "The Arisen's Shadow". In my case, there was no remark or comment, but I did spot a figure following during the night. If you struggle ...
