| Belart Wright Occult Gaming: Darksiders Warmastered Edition | APOCALYPTIC Walkthrough - All Trophies/Achievement s | #1
A return to one of my favorite action adventure games of the last console generation. Darksiders is a love letter to many of the games from my childhood and teenage years. Influences from games such as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Devil May Cry, God of War, and even Warhammer 40K can be seen and felt all over this games aesthetic and gameplay presentation and I LOVE IT!
In the eyes of some, this game can be seen as negatively derivative and to others a love letter to games of the past. To myself, Darksiders is UNIQUELY derivative. It never tries to hide it's influences. There is no shame. Instead, it embraces its shared DNA and infuses it with its own unique lore which itself is a mishmash of known and unknown religious characters and iconography mixed with what you could call OCs (in good fun, of course).
So yeah, Darksiders takes a bunch of stuff from a bunch of different games, media, and religions, puts it in a blender, infuses its own creativity into it and comes out with something amazing. Its an ambitious and unique franchise that probably should have flopped, but managed not to and surprisingly, I've seen games such as God of War 4 borrow quite a few concepts from it and its sequel. Years away from the game have only made me appreciate it more, because what at first glance appears to be a safe cherrypicking of ideas and concepts for known hits reveals itself to be a passion project that has survived even the destruction of a publisher and closing of a development studio. The folks who conceptualized and designed Darksiders are putting love into this IP and I can't blame them for not wanting to reinvent the wheel to do so. And beyond all that, these games are do damn solid and technically sound. #2 loses much of the structure that #1 had but takes so many more risks to create something fairly unique with its melding of the action/platforming genre and looting. Which is another of the ideas God of War 4 has borrowed from it. But hey, good ideas are good ideas, something the developers at Vigil and Gunfire Games know a little something about.
