Tower defense game Orcs Must Die 3 is free to keep forever if you're fast

Today's Epic Games Store freebie is Orcs Must Die 3, a co-op tower defense strategy game where you'll pummel, squish, shoot, and explode waves of orcs, ideally with a friend in tow. It's another great offering following a series of daily free EGS games like Kill Knight, Hot Wheels Unleashed, and Ghostrunner 2.

The past year saw the release of so many excellent titles across all genres. But there are, sadly, some games that didn't see the success or popularity they otherwise deserved. The Siliconera staff has come up with our picks for the most underrated game of 2024 that you should pick up and play, especially over the holiday season.

Siliconera Speaks Up: Most Underrated Game of 2024

Arco is absolutely amazing. It's such a fascinating strategy game with unique combat system and gameplay. Plus the places it takes us, people we meet, and stories it tells feel unique. I loved seeing how it all came together in the end. Plus, it looks so different, but so gorgeous. -- Jenni

It's not the most revolutionary game in the world, but I'd still like to go to bat for Sand Land. It had that charming Toriyama style, fun vehicle customization and was just a cozy, fun time all the way through. Plus, I like that the stealth-takedown animation is just the prince making a scary face at some soldiers so they faint. -- Elliot

I found Isles of Sea and Sky truly wonderful, and I need more people to give it a try. It is a sokoban style puzzle game with open-ended world exploration and a progression system that borrows from Zelda and Metroidvanias. I usually struggle to fully get through most puzzle games, even if I like them a lot, but with Isles of Sea and Sky I could not get enough of it. It helps a lot that the pixel art graphics have a cozy SNES or Game Boy Color vibe and the music is a delight. Seriously, give it a try! -- Daniel

There are quite a lot of picks this year for the most underrated game of 2024. My overall pick has to be Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club. This is a stunning visual novel that isn't too difficult, with a solid mystery. Its ending is a bit weird, but if you stick with it, it balloons into a masterpiece conclusion everyone should check out. The other pick I have to point out is Ova Magica. It has some early access quirks about it, but this game beautifully blends farming sims and Pokemon together in a neat, colorful way. I just wish there was more content. -- Cody

Silent Hill 2 remake is better than the original, but it's a worse game for it

There's no denying that Bloober's accomplished and expansive Silent Hill 2 remake exceeded expectations, though I still prefer the 2001 classic's terror-inducing, mind-warping creativity. Silent Hill 2 remake is technically a more proficient videogame than Team Silent's original. It looks better, plays better, meets the expectations of the day, and builds out the town of Silent Hill in ambitious ways. Yet the original's technical limitations and the artistry holding it together due to and in spite of those possible pitfalls help to make it special.

Baldur's Gate 3 is close to perfect, but the writing is missing one vital thing

Baldur's Gate 3's party is drawn together through the fickle bands of fate. All are infested with mind flayer tadpoles, which will turn them into the eldritch brain eaters eventually. Still, each has a big ego, their own agenda and secrets, and many of them are brash and mean. Throughout the first act, BG3's party members will start to kill each other. Knives at the throat, a dance of blood, the kind of intensity that can blossom into hardened, fierce love. But these moments are all too few. By game's end, the entire party can gather for a feast, toasting each other, celebrating success, with no one left behind. In its move from early access to release, and with each subsequent update, Baldur's Gate 3 lost more of its bite.

     Alienware AW2725QF review: 360Hz and 4K in one sub-$500 27-inch gaming monitor

The Alienware AW2725QF is a potentially hugely appealing gaming monitor, offering what could be the ideal balance of features for many gamers. Its 27-inch screen size packs in a pin-sharp 4K resolution that the display can run at up to 180Hz, for smooth visuals in most games. If you then want to move your gaming up a gear, though, you can switch this panel to a 1080p resolution with up to a 360Hz refresh rate, which is in theory ideal for competitive first person shooters.

With a surprisingly modest asking price, this versatility is enough to earn this IPS LCD display a spot on our best gaming monitor guide, but it's not without some key shortcomings, so read on to find out why this Alienware display might or might not be for you.

I'm actually quite happy with how many of my voted games made it into this year's Advent Calendar, not least because it proves I am acutely in-touch, and definitely didn't dedicate at least fifty percent of my 2024 playing time to a late-onset Elden Ring obsession. Point being, I can present to you my almost-made-it picks without malice nor bitterness, unlike my loser colleagues who didn't get as many in the main list. Nyeh nyeh.

The fell moons rise, and in their cold glare emerges a parcel from the dirt. Bloat and gangrene, crimped as if by tourniquet. A dark promise wriggles within. Grip the fibrous handles, feel its jagged soul imprint upon your palm. Now pull! Rend the sinew, tear muscle from bone, hatch their fetid gift! The yoke draws near! Take up the slip and read the words upon its face.

Time to enjoy your lovely joke!
