Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, January 5, 2026 11:59 AM A nice, juicy nine-minute-long Styx: Blades of Greed gameplay trailer has been plucked from the tree of stealth games today. Juicy in the sense that nine minutes is plenty of time to help ascertain whether a game looks like it could be fun, yet if we're sticking with this metaphor this is one of those apples that's really good but has a nasty bruise on it you have to avoid. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, January 5, 2026 11:05 AM Quake goes Brutalist again with a "megalithic" 77 map mod that's available as a free standalone game If you're a fan of both the colour grey being draped all over designs that could be accurately described as both angular and slabby, you're in luck. A third brutalist map jam has hit Quake, with this one being less of a fan-made map pack and more of a huge overhaul mod - the concrete cavernousness of which dwarfs the original game. |

Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, January 5, 2026 7:17 AM Cubey sandbox crafter Hytale launches into early access next Tuesday, January 13th, after a dicey few months in which it was cancelled, bought out by the original developers, and revived like a majestic square-beaked phoenix. It'll also have a native Linux version, allowing anyone fed up with Microsoft's continued bullshit to play it on a system running something that isn't an increasingly bloated or prematurely abandoned Windows. There are caveats, mind. In a Xitter post announcing the Linux version, Hypixel co-founder and tech director Kevin Carstens – well spotted by Gaming on Linux – stresses that it'll be an "experimental" endeavour, potentially susceptible to bugs specific to different distributions (sub-versions) of the open-source OS. And the Steam Deck, which runs the Linux-based SteamOS, is in a trickier position still. Carstens explains that limited testing on a docked Deck, with the handheld aided by a mouse and keyboard, suggests it can run local singleplayer fine, though it's "not officially recommended" as a Hytale-playing device as the game currently lacks controller support. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, January 5, 2026 7:05 AM Gerry from the River rides up to a noticeboard. 'No, seemingly not that one,' the sentient scrap replies. Gerry grumbles to himself in mild confusion. The RPG's a decade old at this point, and while CD's love of relentlessly adding more stuff to their games is well-documented, they're surely busy focusing on the likes of The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2? |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, January 5, 2026 6:26 AM Before we begin the year's first round-up of new PC game releases, an apology: we skipped feeding the Maw for one whole week back in December. In a deceptively carefree comment, I explained that I had too much seasonal blogmange to prepare, but this was actually a PR excuse to minimise hysteria. You see, back in November the Maw ate me, and I have only just exited its digestive system. During past emergencies, I've done this by hooking onto gumlines and working my way from tonsil to tonsil. This time I forgot to bring my climbing axes, and was obliged to escape in… the other direction. It is best not to share more. Thankfully, the Maw's internal odours are only smellable in the 11th through 17th dimensions, though they can still be detected in Normie Spacetime – you may have noticed that all the reflections are pinstriped today. Anyway, now that I've properly explained the break in service, let's gingerly dip our still-reeking fingers into the spumes of commerce. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, January 5, 2026 5:40 AM It's a new year, and Fallout: London developers Team FOLON have kicked it off by revealing that the massive Fallout 4 mod's second DLC is currently planned to rock up in the irradiated tube station of our lives pretty soon. A Persona 5 Royal DLC pack will release for Fitness Boxing 3: Your Personal Trainer, also known as Fit Boxing 3, on January 8, 2026. The pack will contain five arrangements of tracks from the game, which you can fit box to, as well as three different collaboration T-shirts for your avatar to wear. So far it is only confirmed for the Japanese version of the game, and it's unknown if or when we'll see it in the worldwide release.
The price of the DLC pack will cost 1100 JPY ($6.99). It'll contain arrangements of:
Fitness Boxing games help you exercise by having you punch, duck, and dodge like you're training for boxing, and you'll be able to do workouts to the above tracks in the game. The Persona 5 Royal DLC pack will also, as mentioned earlier, contain three different in-game T-shirts so you can really get in the Phantom Thief mode. This marks the first time that collaboration outfits have appeared in a Fitness Boxing game.
Since Persona 5 came out in 2016, its characters have made crossover appearances in multiple real-life and digital collaboration campaigns. Some of the biggest examples include Joker's appearance in Super Smash Bros. and Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. Joker, Sonic, and the Persona 3 Protagonist also appeared in a crossover event in Wuthering Waves in late December 2025.

Numerous events themed after Genshin Impact will run in Tokyo and other cities across Japan throughout early 2026. Shortly after the 2026 New Year's Day, Cognosphere revealed that it will work with Lawson, Family Mart, and Tokyo Tower to hold campaigns based on the Chinese game simply known in Japanese as Genshin.
The Tokyo Tower event for Genshin Impact will launch first on January 16, 2025. It will appear at the Studio Jupiter media center for the first three days until January 18, 2026. Trust Tokyo's Co・Lab-TOKYO-, on the tower's 2nd floor, will also host an extended event that runs until February 4, 2026.
The Lawson campaign will be the next one to launch on January 20, 2025. The convenience store chain will particularly work with Meiji to release Meltykiss packages branded with Fontaine-based characters. Purchasing three pieces of select Meiji snacks and candies by February 2, 2026, will also let buyers get a free clear file while supplies last.
The third collaboration event will take place at Family Mart outlets across Japan from early February 2026. While details on this event are still scarce, Cognosphere has published a teaser trailer on the game's Japanese social media account.

Ahead of the Code Vein II launch, we'll be able to make our avatar with a Character Creator Demo. Bandai Namco confirmed that will show up on January 23, 2026. This won't be a full gameplay trial, and primarily is designed to help get ourselves settled ahead of the full launch a week later.
The announcement image highlighted what we'll see in it. It will be possible to use the full character creator for the game. The person we make can then be exported and used in a full copy of the game. To ensure the person looks how we want in action, we'll be able to wander around the Magmell Institute hub as our avatar. Photo Mode will be available during this part.
We do already know what the character creator in Code Vein II will look like ahead of this demo release. Back in December 2025, Bandai Namco shared a trailer dedicated to customizing an avatar. This allowed us to see different facial feature selections for both body types, hairstyles, the color palettes available, and the different types of outfits and accessories we could select. Here's that video, in case you missed it.

We'll also get different kinds of Blood Codes to alter how our characters work.
Code Vein II will come to the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC on January 30, 2026, and the Character Creator Demo will debut on January 23, 2026.

The Voltage and AmuLit otome games turned out to be really something so far. Each one of them feels like it prioritizes a strong visual novel system with fascinating characters, and in some cases even other gameplay mechanics. Romance? That's there too! It matters, but the structure is such that the narrative seems to be the priority. That held true for the otome adventures Even if Tempest and Red Bell's Lament, and it is for the newest game Neon Clash: Echoes of the Lost.
While Neon Clash tells an original story in a futuristic setting with individuals with supernatural abilities, it's also based upon the Romance of the Three Kingdoms tale. Kumyo was once ruled under a single king. A legend said "three heroes" will join forces to save it and unite Ping Huan, Sui Lou, Taozhe, Tsanying, Xiang Zhu, Xu Yiang, Yang Shu, and Zhi Fen. Kroa is the surviving heir of the Liu, an honorable mafia family that once helped rule the country. On her 12th birthday, when she was supposed to be picked up by her parents after being raised by her uncle in hiding for years, everyone was massacred. She's been on the run ever since working as a delivery person for questionable items for Deliverydoo. Her only goal? Survival. Her Frayglyph tattoo imparts a psychometry ability that's helped her along, not to mention she inherited gun called Dilu that only she (and certain past Liu relations) can wield.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aN3uZZro5XU
But it's not long into Neon Clash that Kroa needs to shift from survival to revenge and rejuvenation. After returning to Taozhe for a job, getting caught up in a Zhuo assault, and something precious stolen from her being stole by Zhuo Biying's men, Kroa is reunited with the other Gante Lowd. Everything convinces her to reform the Liu family and become its new boss, with the two of them and a former small-time gang leader named Zhang Hiyok joining them. However, that means she'll also cross paths with other mafia families and their leaders like Sun Maslo and Sodyk Mun.
First things first, Neon Clash is 100% a gritty story. There are a lot of mature and unsettling elements. One love interest in particular is a walking red flag. When the game begins, one of Kroa's first missions involves a drug run. Her best friend is a sex worker. To AmuLit's credit, Meimei is handled well and nobody looks down on her because of her profession. When both Kroa and Hiyok talk about her, it's always positively and respectfully. But because there is a lot of different kinds of violence discussed, I could see it being difficult for some people to read. Keep that in mind going in, and you should be fine.
Neon Clash is also an otome visual novel that bears a lot in common with Red Bell's Lament and Bustafellows in that romance won't feel like the priority. There isn't a traditional route system where, as you make decisions, you end up down a path prioritizing Kroa's relationship with Lowd, Hiyok, Mun, or Maslo. Instead, the story as a whole will pay attention to each of the men at different points. You'll need to make the right decisions to get the True End. There is a catch animation to help you see this. Once you reach that end, you can see the happy endings for each of the four characters via the chapter select option. Note that there are some bad endings mid-chapter that can end things early, so keeping multiple saves is smart, though in a few situations I felt like it was pretty obvious when a decision would cut the story short. Also, there is a bad ending to unlock in addition to the True End and its four happy endings, so there is a lot to see and reason to replay and make different decisions.
I could see it being completely worth it, as the character design in Neon Clash is fantastic. Lowd, Hiyok, Mun, and Maslo are all amazing characters, and Kroa herself is one of the most multifaceted and powerful heroines I've seen in an otome game. The bachelor's backstories are well-realized and make sense. Even if there is someone who's a jerk with bad morals, there are elements to him that still make him appealing. I was so glad that the Boss' Grade points after each chapter could be used in a main menu Shop to see additional short stories starring the characters and there's an Underground Newspaper to act as a refresher for the story and offer context after chapters.
Not to mention all of their character designs are fantastic. Neon Clash is a gorgeous game that's bright and colorful, while also being gritty and influenced by both Asian architecture, cityscapes, and technology. Even supporting cast members look incredible. It's a gorgeous game.
Another thing I'll note is that Neon Clash feels like a step forward in terms of launch quality for Voltage and AmuLit releases as well. Yes, I did notice some spelling errors as I went through the story. However, the sentence structure, grammar, and localization all seemed pretty fantastic. Especially given the subject matter and gravity of the situation at some moments. It's in a good place as of time of writing, and I think additional patches could only catch those few remaining issues to fix them. I am a bit disappointed the font is so small, but it is still legible due to the color choices for the text and background. The only real downside here is how the save system works, as it makes getting the additional sadder endings on a replay after already unlocking the good True End ones frustrating due to basically needing to start completely fresh.
Neon Clash: Echoes of the Lost prioritizes a dramatic and thrilling mafia story, though there are romantic endings in this otome game. That there aren't specific routes for each character is a bit of a downer, especially since Kroa and her four love interests are all well-written and captivating. I'm hoping that could happen with a follow-up fan disc. It also feels like a step up for Voltage and AmuLit game launches, as the gameplay seemed bug-free and the localization was stronger than past games. This is the sort of otome visual novel that really feels like it could be a grand adventure for anyone.
Neon Clash: Echoes of the Lost is available for the Nintendo Switch.

It's no secret to any gamer in the know these days how fun and popular ARC Raiders has become, but some new numbers to back up that fact today surprised even me.
Before I could finish wiping the crust from my eyes after my winter break (it was restful other than a pesky head cold, but I thankfully avoided the game's frostbite mechanic), Alinea Analytics posted a new report on just how big ARC Raiders has become, and how it doesn't seem to be slowing down.
Alinea's head of market analysis, Rhys Elliot, posted the image above to showcase that the company estimates that ARC Raiders has sold over 12 million copies across Steam, Xbox, and PS5 in just over two months since it launched. Not only that, but the game reached a new record for daily active users just yesterday, Jan. 4, with over 3.2 million players across all platforms.
The company estimates that ARC Raiders has generated over $350 million in revenue, but it's unclear if that includes in-game microtransactions or not. Either way, the extraction shooter has been a huge success for Embark Studios, and what feels like one of the biggest new IP in quite some time.
Elliott remarked that "daily copies sold started to stabilize by early December, but a well-timed 20 percent discount across all platforms – and the holiday boost – reversed that." And so now, heading into 2026, gamers everywhere are waiting to see what's next to pop up on the roadmap for the live-service title.
After last month's Cold Snap update, the team at Embark likely headed home for some well-deserved rest, but players thirsty for more missions, weapons, ARC enemies, and potentially new maps are holding on to see when and what to expect from the title that's been captivating multiplayer gamers since it dropped in October.
Are you still enjoying your time in ARC Raiders? I took a hiatus from gaming over the vacation (something much-needed in this lucky profession of mine), but I've heard calls to join topside expeditions from my casual gaming friends, and that's how I really know how big this title has become.

If you think you've mastered the art of ghost hunting in Phasmophobia, you may be ready to put your skills to the test. Weekly challenge modes are a great way to see just how good you are.
These special trials modify how the game works, usually with rules that make the experience a lot harder. Successfully finishing the challenge gets you plenty of XP and cash, so it's well worth the effort. Here's the weekly challenge in Phasmophobia and everything you need to know to beat it.
Table of contents
Phasmophobia weekly challenge mode (Jan. 4-11)
From Jan. 4 to 11, the weekly challenge is Speed Demons in Phasmophobia. In this challenge, both you and the ghost are a lot faster than normal. Everything else in this trial is fairly normal, so it's not a super daunting one to get done.
How to complete the weekly challenge in Phasmophobia
To finish the weekly challenge mode in Phasmophobia, you need to correctly identify the ghost present on the featured map three times. The specific changes present in each trial mode vary, but your goal is always the same.
All Speed Demons weekly challenge modifiers in Phasmophobia
This challenge mode has several specific rules that modify the way the contract functions. Here are all the key details you need to know about this trial.
Phasmophobia Speed Demons weekly challenge mode tips
This is one of the trickier challenges you can attempt in Phasmophobia, so here are some of the best tips you can employ to help you get it done.
When does the challenge mode change in Phasmophobia?
The challenge mode changes every Monday at 12am UTC, which translates to 6pm CT every Sunday. You have a full week to tackle each challenge mode when it's available. All challenge modes return regularly since they're on a rotating schedule, so if you don't get to finish one, you can always try it again in the future.
Next weekly challenge mode in Phasmophobia
The next weekly challenge mode, which will run for a full week from Jan. 11 to 18, will be Detectives Only. This challenge mode will begin as soon as this week's featured one, Speed Demons, ends.
All weekly challenge modes in Phasmophobia
There are 26 challenge modes in Phasmophobia. A different one is available to complete each week, and the challenge order stays identical, so it's easy to know which one is coming next. Here are all of the challenges you may face in Phasmophobia.
Special challenge modes in Phasmophobia
In addition to the regular challenge modes that rotate in and out on a consistent basis, there are also sometimes special challenge modes that have only ever appeared once and left the rotation afterward. These trials are generally designed for testing out features that are new at the time, like fresh equipment and maps.

It can be tough navigating through the valley alone, but luckily, DreamTeams can be used to make progression a lot easier in Disney Dreamlight Valley. This feature wasn't always available, so you might need some help learning how it works.
DreamTeams are a great way to meet with other players and enhance your experience by sharing content with them. If you're interested in trying it out, here's how to create and join DreamTeams in Disney Dreamlight Valley, plus everything else you need to know about them.
Table of contents
What are DreamTeams in Disney Dreamlight Valley?
DreamTeams are a special social feature you can use to team up with up to seven other players. While in one of these groups, you have constant access to several special features, including the ability to trade items, share pictures, share DreamSnap rankings, and more. DreamTeams are essentially clubs you can create or join to help out and share content with other players.
What can you do in DreamTeams in Disney Dreamlight Valley?
Everything you can do in a DreamTeam involves the members of the group interacting and collaborating with each other. The activities you can enjoy while part of one are as follows.
How to unlock DreamTeams in Disney Dreamlight Valley
The DreamTeams feature isn't available right away and requires you to progress through the main storyline until you finish the Friendship is Everything quest to unlock it. This mission becomes available after you tackle The Royal Tools and The Dream Castle quests, which are fairly early on, so you can access this option decently early into the game.
How to create a DreamTeam in Disney Dreamlight Valley
To make your own DreamTeam for other players to join, open the main menu and switch over to the DreamTeams tab, which is located right in the middle between the Quests and Event pages. Select the Create DreamTeam option near the bottom left corner to initiate the process. This option is only available if you aren't already in a group, so if you are, you'll need to leave it first.
How to join a DreamTeam in Disney Dreamlight Valley
There are three different methods you can use to join a DreamTeam in DDV:
How to leave a DreamTeam in Disney Dreamlight Valley
If you want to join a new DreamTeam or opt out of this feature altogether, you can do so by navigating to the Your DreamTeam tab and selecting the Leave Team option. You can only be in one DreamTeam at any given time, but you can move around to new ones as often as you desire.
There are plenty of tricky features you might encounter while playing DDV. Some other ones you may run into and need help navigating are re-rolling duties, placing stalls in DLC worlds, changing your Dream Castle skin, unlocking all horses and mounts, and getting the Sakura Blossom Dragon Community Companion.

The latest update has introduced a special condition that applies to all maps. When the Cold Snap conditions are triggered, the maps will have major areas covered by snow. This is when you can find snowballs. This guide will help you find out about the snowballs and explain what you can do with them.

How to get snowballs in ARC Raiders
You can only find snowballs when a Cold Snap condition is active on a map. You can check whether the condition is active before beginning a fresh round. You'll have to be careful about the chill that can chip away at your health if you're not careful.
You can find snowballs in the group. You can also collect them with your hands. Go close to a snowball, and you'll get the Collect prompt. The snowball will be added to your quick slot, and you can equip it to throw at another player.
The process of throwing a snowball is the same as throwing any other throwable. You confirm your aim and then choose the force to determine how far the snowball will go. However, the range of snowballs in ARC Raiders appears to be relatively low, so try to get close to another player before you throw a snowball.
Can you damage someone with snowballs in ARC Raiders
The snowballs are purely cosmetic, and you can't use them to damage other players. They also don't have any in-game effects, plus it's nearly pointless to bring them back with you. You'll get just 20 coins per snowball, so it's better just to use them in a round before a safe extraction.
If you're looking to get three stars in the Week 11 trials, you have to collect multiple snowballs and hit a Bastion with them.

You'll need some snowballs in ARC Raiders if you're looking to complete the Week 11 trials.
One of the new tasks requires you to find Bastions and pepper them with snowballs. It's pretty similar to last week when we had to do the same to Rocketeers. Bastions are one of the most dangerous enemies to come across during a raid, and this guide will make it easy for you to complete the task with three stars.

How to find the Bastion in ARC Raiders
The Bastion can be found on all five maps, and it doesn't have a fixed location. The easiest place to find one is the Loading Bay area in Stella Montis. However, the Stella Montis map doesn't have the Cold Snap map modifier, which is required for you to find the snowballs.
Instead, you can try your luck on the Blue Gate map. You'll find one near the Warehouse Complex (spawns pretty commonly during most raids). First, try to find some snowballs before you look for the Bastion. Make sure that the Cold Snap map modifier is active, too.
How to hit the Bastion with snowballs
Snowballs don't have a long range, so you'll need to get close to the Bastion. This is the dangerous part of your task. To get all three stars on the Week 11 trials, you'll have to hit the Bastion 16 times. First, create a party since that will make your life easier.
Next, one of you should act as bait. The bait's job is to draw all the attention of the Bastion. This will allow the others to hit the Bastion with snowballs. Since the progression is shared across all members, it doesn't matter if you're not the one throwing the snowballs.
That's the easiest way to target the Bastion with snowballs and complete the new trials for maximum rewards.
