Dune MMO survival game artists tease the Harkonnens

Several new Dune games have been in the works following the successful release of the movie last year, with strategy game Dune: Spice Wars out now in early access - but there's also a Dune MMO game coming, and now we may have got our first idea of what the villainous Harkonnens could look like in that game.

We've known for a long time that a Dune MMO survival game is in development at Funcom, the team behind Conan Exiles. However, in the last two years, we haven't even seen a single piece of artwork from the new Dune.

Now, two artists working at Funcom have revealed a detailed 3D model for a character called Captain Iakin Nefud Harkonnen. While they do label it as "fan art" (quotes theirs), Rui Pereira is a 3D character artist at Funcom working on Conan Exiles and Dune, and 3D hair artist Andre Pires also confirms he is working on Dune. Consequently, it at least gives fans a possible idea as to where the Dune game is going in terms of character designs - who knows, this captain may even appear in the final game.

Apex Legends Mad Maggie bug nerfs riot drill vs Newcastle

Apex Legends players have noticed what appears to be a new Mad Maggie bug preventing her riot drill from dealing damage through Newcastle's mobile shield. Maggie's riot drill ability attaches to solid obstacles and burns enemies located on the other side, making it an ideal way to flush rival players out from behind obstacles or shields in the battle royale game, but it's currently not working as intended.

Normally, the drill works against defences created by legend abilities, such as Gibraltar's dome of protection and Newcastle's mobile shield, as well as on natural cover, walls, and doors. However, since the recent Awakening event update during Apex Legends season 13, which provided several other fixes for Newcastle, it seems as though the riot drill is being prevented from affixing to the newest legend's shield.

Reddit user Sweatyeagle8497 initially posted a clip showing the bug in action, though it wasn't enough to stop them from taking down their opponent. They then did some testing and found that it happened consistently - with the riot drill not attaching to the shield and instead refreshing its cooldown. So at least you don't lose it, then, but you also don't get its intended benefit.

     V Rising endgame will have

Vampiric survival game V Rising has already proven a hit on Steam but it's still only in early access, so there's a lot more content coming. In a new interview, the vampire game's developer reveals plans for the V Rising endgame - which includes the return of Dracula and "Game of Thrones vibes."

Stunlock Studios has previously revealed that the V Rising 1.0 release will be an "evolution" of the current game, and teased "super exciting additions coming." Now, in a new interview with streamers Asmongold and Rich Campbell, Stunlock teased a few more details about its future plans for the endgame.

"Our ambition is to bring back Dracula," confirms game director Peter Ilves. He continues, "what is his role, will you be able to challenge him, will you be able to become Dracula in the endgame, will you be sitting on the Throne of Darkness?" These are all questions the team has been "really intrigued about" and players will "definitely see" Dracula's return "as some sort of big event" at some point.

Space Bob vs. The Replicons is an ambitious 2D game about flying your spaceship onto a procedurally generated planet surface, gathering resources and tethering them to your ship, then blasting back into orbit to explore more of outerspace. There's a new trailer for it below, but it's not a new game. Space Bob launched in 2018, sold poorly, and then its developer left the games industry. That developer is returning now to take a second swing at the game and released a major update earlier this week.

Someone's spotted a sneaky Steam summer sale event solution

The Steam summer sale is underway, and with it comes a rather unique event that sends users scouring through the pages of Valve's store in search of "the ten best games from the far future," which have all been stolen by time-travelling trickster Clorthax. The names and locations of the game are a mystery, but one clever user has found a sneaky shortcut to tracking them down.

The only clues provided by Clorthax to the game's identities are vague, rhyming sentences - and, even if you were to cheat and look up the game names for yourself, you aren't allowed to just stick them into the search box. The only way to 'solve' the puzzles is to browse through the store until you spot them.

It's all a clever, if fairly transparent, ruse to get you to scroll and click through as many different upcoming games on the store as possible, of course - with the hope that your eye will be caught be a selection of deliciously tempting deals along the way that you find too good to pass up. Thankfully, there is a cunning workaround.

Ambitious Project Diablo 2 mod launches its fifth season

You probably don't think of most mods having live seasons, but for the ambitious Project Diablo 2 mod it's a core part of their pitch. The mod for the original 2000 Diablo II launched its first season back in November 2020. It was designed to provide a new lease of life to the action-RPG game as though it was still actively being supported - and it's certainly a nice way to pass the time until the Diablo 4 release date.

Project Diablo 2's core mission statement is "to maintain the Lord of Destruction experience and provide consistent ladder resets while improving on the game as if development never ceased." The mod features a wealth of item rebalances, new endgame content, useful quality of life improvements, and increased potential build diversity.

Seasons in Project Diablo 2 typically run for about four months, although it's been slightly longer than that since the release of season four, Enlightenment. Some of the big changes and highlights for season five include a new trade site, quick casts, buff timers, improved monster targeting, a DPS meter, shared stashes across your characters, and a new "casual friendly" farming boss called uber ancients that provides an alternative to the usual AoE-focused farming methods.

A major Fortnite streamer has quit to play Valorant instead

A prominent Fortnite competitive player and streamer has announced that they're giving up on Epic's popular battle royale game and moving to a completely different multiplayer game instead - Riot's Valorant.

18-year-old streamer and professional gamer Benjyfishy, a.k.a. Benjy Fish (yes, that's actually his real name), has announced that he is quitting playing Fortnite competitively and is focusing his attention on FPS game Valorant, with the backing of his team at NRG. Fish has been playing Fortnite all his professional life and was one of the top players in the Fortnite World Cup.

So why the switch? Fish confesses that he "fell out of love with Fortnite" around Chapter 3 Season 2, saying that "it seems pointless carrying on something I don't enjoy." He adds that he's "so incredibly grateful" for those years he spent playing Fortnite. "I don't think I'd replace those years for anything."

Fan recreates Terraria in 3D, and it's terrifying

Sure, Terraria might be one of the best crafting games on PC, but have you ever considered what it could be like with a third dimension? Developer Peteh12, also known as 3D Worm, is aiming to answer that question with a free-to-play project that reimagines Terraria in 3D. They first showed off the project earlier in the year, having previously created 3D models of some of the survival game's most iconic boss enemies.

Now the newest update shows off the game's take on the evil crimson biome. Peteh12 says they've been working on the game for over ten months now, and that while it's still fairly early in the process they are intending to include multiplayer compatibility when the game releases. It might be a way off, but it's already looking very impressive, with the option to play from both a third-person and first-person viewpoint.

The game itself is built in Unreal Engine, and reimagines many of Terraria's most recognisable enemies, items, and environments in full 3D. It also features fan remixes of some of the game's music. The HUD and UI is currently taken almost directly from the original 2D game, which helps to really sell the effect. Peteh12 has already shown off a couple of the early Terraria boss fights in their 3D forms too, and seeing the Eye of Cthulhu's second form charging towards you from the dark of night in first-person is, quite frankly, pretty terrifying.

Escape from Tarkov like Call of Duty reportedly coming 2023

The long-rumoured Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 DMZ mode, which may be a survival game inspired by Escape from Tarkov, will reportedly release in early 2023 - and, according to the same report, will actually be available as a separate free-to-play game similar to Call of Duty: Warzone.

Rumours of a new mode called DMZ for the upcoming Modern Warfare 2 have circulated for a while now but the Tarkov-like game has not received an official announcement - despite the FPS game's multiplayer being confirmed as inspired by Call of Duty: Warzone's emergent gameplay.

Now, a new report by RalphsValve at What If Gaming suggests that Call of Duty's DMZ mode "has seen a number of changes" during its four-year development and is set to launch following Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 in Q1 2023 - although may be released as an independent free-to-play beta instead.

Cr1tikal sets $5,000 bounty to beat Halo 2 LASO deathless

A major YouTuber and streamer is offering a USD $5,000 bounty to anyone who can beat Halo 2 Anniversary. While many FPS game fans did that a while ago, this is a bit of a tougher challenge - it's a Halo 2 no death run, on Legendary difficulty, with nearly all skull modifiers turned on. Which is nearly impossible.

For most of the space game's history, developers have hidden secret skulls around the campaign, right up to Halo Infinite. These skulls contain modifiers that usually make the game a lot tougher - such as no visible HUD or weapons, not regaining shields unless you punch an enemy, and making the Covenant a lot deadlier.

Consequently, a Halo LASO run - Legendary difficulty with all skulls on - is the hardest challenge a Halo player can face. And doing that without dying? Near impossible. Streamer Cr1TiKaL - a.k.a. penguinz0 or Charlie White - has now challenged the community to do just that in Halo 2 Anniversary by offering USD $5,000 to anyone who can go through LASO and not die.

Pokémon like Temtem microtransactions and campaign detailed

PC players looking for their own Pokémon like game might have had their eye on Temtem for a while as a promising alternative creature collection experience. Now developer Crema has been laying out details about the TemTem microtransactions, campaign structure, competitive play, and more that you can expect when the RPG game hits full 1.0 release on September 6.

During Crema's 'Golden Week' event, the team has been rolling out announcements, focusing on a different aspect of the game every day. Crema talks about campaign progression, saying they have reduced mandatory NPC battles by around 20% (although the battles will still be there for players that want them) and that a lot of NPC dialogue has been moved to take place after a fight so that players not interested in the narrative can skip past it. In addition, a new experience bonus is applied to Tems outside of your squad when playing in co-op.

Next, the team discusses Temtem's competitive multiplayer modes, unveiling a new "TemTem showdown" format which allows players to participate in friendly or ranked battles without having to catch and train your team manually. Instead, players can freely edit their team, customising the stat balance and move sets of each Tem to their liking. These custom showdown teams are only available for these matches, allowing PvP focused players more immediate and dynamic access to the format without detracting from the traditional team training format of the rest of the game. Players can also still use hand-built teams in the ranked ladder, should they choose to.

gible cushion header

Premium Bandai has opened up pre-orders for a Pokemon Gible PC cushion. It will cost 6,380 JPY (approximately $47.20) and will come with a wrist rest as well. It is a PC cushion because you can lean against it and "hug" it between yourself and the desk. However, it also doubles as a plush you can use on the daily. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

According to the product page, there are three methods to enjoy the Gible cushion. First, you can leave it around as decoration. Then, you can use it in its marketed method as a PC cushion. The wrist rest looks like a plush keyboard that attaches to the Gible. However, you can take it off and use the cushion in its third way, which is to simply hug it as a plushie. It is around 50 cm x 40 cm x 48 cm.

[gallery columns="2" ids="930989,930988" link="file"]

Gible is not the first Pokemon to appear as a plush toy or even as a PC accessory. In early 2022, Ensky released a Yamper plush that could double as a wrist rest for when you use your mouse. Gengar is also a popular companion, as the Ghost-type Pokemon has appeared as both an armchair and as a plush-slash-blanket.

The Pokemon Gible PC cushion is available for pre-order from June 24, 2022, and pre-orders will close when Premium Bandai runs out of stock. The cushion will ship out in Japan in October 2022.

The next Stardew Valley update is made for modders

A new Stardew Valley update is coming, and it's made for fans and makers of Stardew mods. Game creator Eric Barone made the unofficial announcement on Twitter in response to a question from RetroBoyYTBruh asking whether fans can expect new updates and if Haunted Chocolatier is in any way connected to Stardew Valley. RetroBoy asked about two future updates, and Barone actually confirmed that he's working on both Stardew 1.6 and Stardew 1.7, though what they may contain is still a bit of a mystery.

This Cyberpunk 2077 mod could boost performance on lower-spec PCs

AMD's new FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 has only been out for a little over a month, so there aren't too many games that support it yet. One Cyberpunk 2077 modder is trying to change that, however, with a homemade implementation of AMD's fast new image-upscaling technique in the RPG game. From the sounds of things, it's actually working too.

The FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 mod for Cyberpunk 2077, created by prolific Cyberpunk modder PotatoOfDoom, replaces the existing Nvidia DLSS temporal upscaling in Cyberpunk 2077 with AMD FSR 2.0. Because of the way both FSR and DLSS works, it's a fairly straightforward process, at least in theory: you just need to remove the DLSS dynamic link library (or .dll) files Cyberpunk 2077 uses with new ones that translate DLSS to FSR 2.0 commands.

No, Lost Ark pay to win cosmetics aren't coming to the game

Lost Ark pay-to-win microtransactions won't be a thing, it turns out. Smilegate and Amazon Games Studios published a blog post about the MMO game's delayed June update on June 23 and outlined the new Yoz's Jar system, where cosmetics of different types would give players a 1% or 2% attack, intelligence, and dexterity buffs depending on their rarity. While that's not likely to turn the tides of any PvP encounter, that's not really the point.

Dyson Sphere Program's enemies look like a dense black fog

Things have been fairly peaceful so far in Dyson Sphere Program, the city-building game about creating superstructures that harvest the energy of stars. But in the not-so-distant future, Dyson Sphere Program enemies will be showing up, and they take the form of a black fog that consumes whole planets, always in search of more energy.

Developer Youthcat Studio says the enemy faction, which it's currently working on, is known as the Dark Fog. As it turns out, the Dark Fog is an offshoot of the same self-replicating AI that your mechs and settlements are plugged into, and at one time helped feed resources to the CentreBrain just like you do.

Fortnite could be getting a new wave of KAWS skins

Fortnite isn't just about dressing up your character, though you'd be forgiven for thinking otherwise. With yet more Naruto characters in the item shop and even the likes of Spider-Man making an appearance, it's easy to assume that the game is just a giant, nerdy wardrobe. It is, but it's also one of the best battle royale games around, but that hasn't stopped Epic from constantly setting up cool new skins for us all to wear.

20220618205430 1 (copy)Not content to rest on its laurels AI: The Somnium Files – nirvanA Initiative has another rough puzzle to throw your way. Once Mizuki finds a familiar corpse in the park, you'll see that there are three letters on both the front and the back of the monument the body is sticking to. The left side says AEF, while the right says RLE. If you've been paying attention, you can already solve this puzzle just by looking at the letters available to you. What prominently featured thing in the game has contained these letters? If that doesn't ring a bell, then no matter, because you can solve it the old-fashioned way. Go into the nearby building after searching it with your X-ray vision to find a balloon. Inside is a set of intersecting arrows. You'll want to combine the arrow placement with the letters themselves. Setting the two sets side by side looks like this: A             R E              L F              E Looking at the arrows is tellin...

20220615234626 1If you're like me, you weren't expecting actual puzzles in AI: The Somnium Files – nirvanA Initiative. Upon investigating the Naix President, Tokiko Shigure's, office and reenacting the steps to open a secret passageway, the game throws a curveball: solve this puzzle or turn the game off. It's a bit jarring, seeing as you only got to take a brief look at the numbers and nonuple X rhombus before being told that you need to figure a code out. Unlike some other puzzles in the game, even if you can't figure it out, it won't give you anything more than what you need to solve the puzzle. Solving it isn't actually difficult at all. Before I straight-up give you the answer, I'll break down how you're meant to go about solving it, in case you want to understand what exactly you're meant to do to come to the proper conclusion. You'll see the hint in the image below. The code has seven digits and there are seven rows of numb...

Halo Master Chief Collection protagonist Spartan343 Industries has not earned a lot of goodwill from fans as of late. Although Halo Infinite earned a fairly positive reception at launch, that initial honeymoon phase ended quickly, as players grew annoyed over the game's lackluster multiplayer offerings and sparse updates. Recent PR blunders, such as a recent cosmetic made to celebrate Juneteenth that used an offensive name, did not help matters. Now, it looks like 343 has committed itself to harming its reputation even further, as a recent community update revealed that the developer has considered implementing microtransactions into Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Although the community update mostly covers current and future additions to Halo Infinite and Halo: The Master Chief Collection, the microtransaction news easily overshadows them. These microtransactions, if implemented, would come in the form of purchasable Spartan Points, previously known as Season Points.   Why now? The update tries to justify this p...

20220622195756 1Resident Evil Village launched with ray tracing, which made it the first game in the series to have the feature. However, it's no longer on its lonesome, as the remakes of Resident Evils 2 and 3, along with Resident Evil 7, have all now received the same treatment. Updates for all three games rolled out last week and, naturally, there were some issues from people playing the games on weaker hardware. Capcom quickly responded by offering a branch containing previous versions of the games. This piece compares the main branch versions of all three games with ray tracing both off and on, as well as pictures of each game's menu. As all three Resident Evil games run on the same engine and received the exact same updates, it isn't any surprise that the offerings here have parity across games. Across the three, ray tracing can't be turned on and off while in-game, so settings can only be altered in the main menu. Naturally, this made taking exact comparison shots hard...
