First it created an addictive, Diablo-esque ARPG oozing in pixel style, Hyper Light Drifter. Then it took its visual style to the next level with the brilliant action platformer Solar Ash. Now, it's time for Heart Machine's third (and arguably most-anticipated) game to arrive, Hyper Light Breaker. This co-op action roguelike was revealed many moons ago and has suffered a few delays since, but the day has finally arrived - Hyper Light Breaker is out now in Steam Early Access.

Arm could shake up entire gaming and PC industry by making its own chips

Arm, the UK company behind the core design used in millions chips that power devices worldwide, is apparently planning to get into the CPU-designing game itself. This speculation comes from a report showing that not only is the company planning on competing with its own customers but jacking up prices by up to 300% too.

While Arm licenses its core CPU technology to other companies, it largely doesn't actually design its own complete chips. Instead, its tech is incorporated into processors made by the likes of Apple, Nvidia, and Qualcomm. We saw the latter launch its new Snapdragon X laptop CPUs just recently, and while they made quite a splash, we're still some way from the best gaming PCs making the switch to Arm just yet. However, new rumors indicate that Nvidia is going to be stepping into the space and Arm is clearly bullish about the prospect of its own designs too.

New survival FPS game from ex Stalker dev feels like the return of Crysis

For an entire generation of PC players, the name Crysis will still summon memories of glacial framerates, frantic fan blades, and gaming rigs that were sufficiently overheated you could use them as a stove. The gorgeous world of Crytek's tower-toppling 2007 FPS was made more elaborate with Crysis 2, which traded palm trees and dense brush for the concrete jungle of New York City. Crysis 3 combined the two - it was the Big Apple as reclaimed by nature. Led by a former Stalker designer and combining the crafting and survival-driven gunplay of modern Fallout, a new shooter, Forest Reigns, picks up the world design where Crysis 3 left off.

Forgotten 2012 MMORPG Blade and Soul is getting a sweeping new remaster

Once upon a time, I was a budding martial artist. I've done everything from Kendo to Taekwondo, and while I was never particularly good at any of them, I love the idea of synchronizing mind, body, and soul to eventually attain mastery over movement. It's the reason I've always wanted to try out Naraka Bladepoint, and why I default to monk in pretty much every videogame. But, while WoW's monk is certainly impactful, it doesn't have the fluid movement of Blade and Soul, a Wuxia-inspired MMORPG that was first released in 2012, and is being remastered and re-launched in 2025.

Best fighting games on PC 2025

What are the best fighting games on PC? It might not seem like it these days, but it wasn't until the late '00s that PC users were finally treated to the latest fighting games. It's fair to say the genre is going through a golden age right now, with the biggest series like Street Fighter and Tekken catering to both new and hardcore players.

One of the PC's strengths is that you're able to use any input device to play, whether that be one of the best PC controller, one of the best fight sticks, or whatever control method you desire to use. With more developers embracing cross-platform play, there are more people to fight than ever before. Once you've hit up training mode to practice some combos, it's time to take on some opponents in your favorite multiplayer games.

Intel's latest laptop CPUs beat AMD, but you might want to hold off for gaming

A new video coming from BiliBili, a Chinese social network, shows off the performance of Intel and AMD's current generation of mobile chips. The user pitted AMD's Ryzen AI 9 365 against Intel's Core Ultra 9 285H and the result is that the new Intel laptop CPU impresses in some areas, but not so much in gaming.

Intel sweeps the performance metrics when it comes to productivity, but AMD still keeps its competition at bay in gaming. This isn't too surprising if you've been keeping up with the best gaming handhelds. One of the only handhelds using Intel's chips, the MSI Claw, is already rumored to be considering ditching them for AMD's gaming prowess.

As Genshin Impact characters are locked behind gacha mechanics in the free PC game, players were initially worried that skins may be sold using the same system. However, there are actually two methods to unlock skins: purchase the skin for 1,680 Genesis Crystals, or complete specific Genshin Impact events to unlock the skin for free.      How to use the Monster Hunter Wilds Great Sword

How do you use the Monster Hunter Wilds Great Sword? This staple Monster Hunter weapon returns in Wilds, and we couldn't be happier for it. The Great Sword is ideal for players who prefer to charge into battle and inflict massive damage with slow and deliberate slashes. It boasts the highest damage per hit out of any weapon, making it a worthwhile pick regardless of skill level.

The Great Sword is the best weapon to get to grips with the slower and heavier cadence of combat in Monster Hunter Wilds. Its skill ceiling is also high enough that the investment in learning how to use it doesn't go to waste. When is The Blood of Dawnwalker release date? The action RPG is in development by Rebel Wolves, the studio co-founded by Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, director of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It was announced on the day of the Wolf Moon, and rather fittingly follows the rise of a powerful clan of vampires in an alternative 14th century.

Set during a time of devastation, this vampire game is a supernatural slant on the events of the plague. Vampires lurk in the darkness, biding their time until the Black Death takes hold of the land, when they seize the opportunity to strike for control while the humans are weak. In Dawnwalker, vampires now reside in the previous lord's castles, these vampires rule over the valley, and it's your job to save your family from them.

The best JRPGs on PC 2025

What are the best JRPGs? This genre is, nowadays, at least, subtly different from Western RPGs, and while the genre as a whole has evolved since the early days, it tends to keep the emphasis on its two key tropes: long stories with memorable characters, and lots of grinding.

Some of the newer games on this list abandon traditional fantasy in favor of a more realistic setting. However, the classic style, at least when we think of JRPGs, conjures up images of mages, ferocious monsters, and a top-down perspective. Either way, these JRPGs bring a different flavor than what you can expect from the best RPGs in the West and could be considered some of the best PC games to fans of the genre.

This Nvidia GeForce RTX 5050 leak appears to show a new budget laptop gaming GPU

A new unannounced gaming GPU called the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5050 has just appeared as part of the spec for an LG laptop, suggesting that there will at least be a budget RTX 5000 GPU in the mobile world. The laptop appeared on a South Korean retailer's website, and it also appears to come equipped with a 144Hz screen.

Even so, the LG Gram Pro 16 AI isn't a gaming laptop in the slightest and is instead mainly aimed at a professional audience. However, the Nvidia GPU inside it is drawing attention. At CES 2025, Nvidia announced its RTX 5000 series laptop graphics cards, but there was no mention of the RTX 5060, let alone the RTX 5050.

Project Pantheon is a dreary ARPG blending Diablo and Escape from Tarkov

If you've kept up with my vaguely coherent ramblings over the past few years, you'll know that Diablo is one of my favorite videogame franchises ever. It's the dreariness, the action, the sense of complete and utter hopelessness - sure, it's all a little bit depressing, but it's a world I can't tear myself away from. While there are a slew of other ARPGs - Path of Exile 2, Last Epoch - I've never really been able to divorce myself from Sanctuary, simply because I feel like Diablo will always just do it better. Wolcen Studio's new 'ExtrAction ARPG' Project Pantheon, however, adds an interesting twist to the traditional hacking and slashing, and, despite my affinity for Diablo, it may just lure me away.

I played Half-Life 2 RTX with Nvidia neural rendering, and it looks damn fine

Gordon Freeman's classic toxic crowbar adventure is about to get even more realistic, as the Half-Life 2 RTX Remix project is working on adding Nvidia neural rendering to the game, in addition to ray tracing. I had a chance to play the game with the new tech on an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090, and it looks damn fine.

Many of the technical details of Nvidia neural rendering tech are under wraps at the moment, but I was given a glimpse of what's possible with the tech in Half-Life 2 on an Nvidia rig at CES, and it really brings out the benefits of realistic lighting in the scene, not just in the scenery but also in the characters. If you're thinking of buying an RTX 5090, then this is just a taster of what it can do.

"Coming off Turbo Overkill has been great," Trigger Happy's Sam Prebble tells me over call. "That game's development... I mean, it worked out. But it was very messy because it was my first game and I didn't know what the hell I was doing. So I found myself, when it came to pumping content out, I was like: oh, shit. This code base is fucking awful. Like, I can't put stuff together easily. I'm running into bugs everywhere. But now shit just works!"

You might know Sam Prebble as Trigger Happy Interactive, the solo developer behind frenetic FPS Turbo Overkill. Before that he went by a different name, attached to a very different project. Total Chaos, first released in 2018 under the moniker Wadaholic, is a total conversion mod for Doom 2. With its focus on a thick survival horror atmosphere of tension and disempowerment, it's about as far removed from Turbo Overkill's manic, Doom Eternal-inspired action as a game can get. As Prebble puts it, the only thing the two projects have in common is the first person perspective. Even so, he found himself returning to Total Chaos after wrapping development on Turbo Overkill, resulting in the standalone remake.

star rail lawson

HoYoVerse announced yet another collaboration between the game Honkai: Star Rail and Lawson convenience stores in Japan, which will mean more merchandise. More details on it will appear in late March 2025.

This collaboration focuses on Amphoreus, which is the new world that the Astral Express and Trailblazers will visit when version 3.0 launches on January 15, 2025. After the collaboration starts, food items and merchandise featuring the new Amphoreus characters from Honkai: Star Rail will appear in participating Lawson locations. Buying them will earn you the chance to win some exclusive and limited goods. As well, participating stores will have some Honkai: Star Rail announcements and decorations.

The last time HoYoVerse and Lawson had a Honkai: Star Rail collaboration was back in April 2024. This campaign featured Acheron, Aventurine, and Sparkle, who were the first new characters we saw when the setting shifted to Penacony in version 2.0. Back then, Lawson collaboration Honkai: Star Rail merchandise included acrylic keychains, foldable tables, and Meiji snacks. The store offered prizes like clear files and magnet sheets based on what you purchased.

While it's hard to tell the order that the Amphoreus characters will appear in, we can assume that characters HoYoVerse already released drip marketing for will be present in this collaboration. That includes: Aglaea, Tribbie, and Mydei. Other major characters like Phainon might appear on the goods as well.

Honkai: Star Rail is available on the PS5, Windows PC, and mobile devices.

FFXIV Cloud of Darkness Chaotic Changes Coming After Feedback

Square Enix announced one of the changes coming in patch 7.16 for FFXIV, and it affects the Chaotic version of the Cloud of Darkness Alliance Raid. In short, after the update drops we can exchange Clouddark Demimateria I for Clouddark Demimateria II.

When you take on the raid, you always get two Clouddark Demimateria I and one Clouddark Demimateria II. You can take these items to Uah'shepya in Solution Nine to trade for certain items that also have a chance to drop from the fight. However, Clouddark Demimateria II can only be exchanged for the A Half Times Two hairstyle Modern Aesthetics item or Dais of Darkness mount. Each one requires multiple Clouddark Demimateria II, in the event they don't appear after the battle as loot, so this change would make it easier to trade for them.

Here's the official announcement. In it, Square Enix also asked for additional feedback about the fight.

https://twitter.com/FF_XIV_EN/status/1879121281162870974

The FFXIV Cloud of Darkness Chaotic Alliance Raid is relatively new to the MMORPG, as the Final Fantasy crossover fight debuted in patch 7.15. One of the draws for the fight is a new mount. The Shroud Of Darkness basically allows us to don the boss' "eldritch rainment" to look and move around like it does in the field.

Final Fantasy XIV is available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC, and the Cloud of Darkness Chaotic changes will appear in the upcoming FFXIV 7.16 patch.

Netflix Shared More One Piece Live-Action Season 2 Actors

Netflix took to social media to share three more of the One Piece season 2 live-action actors. One is one of the more major Baroque Works characters, Miss Goldenweek. The other two are Chess and K.M.

Miss Goldenweek is played by Sophia Anne Caruso. She is best known for musicals like The Sound of Music Live and the Beetlejuice musical. Anton David Jeftha is K.M. He previously appeared in both Dominion and Homeland. As for Chess, Mark Penwill plays him. One of his most recent parts was in Catch Me a Killer.

Here's the announcement, which shows pictures of the characters alongside the actors who will play them in season 2 of the live-action adaptation of One Piece.

https://twitter.com/onepiecenetflix/status/1879159033740869851

Many of the latest One Piece season 2 live-action actor announcements involved both major and supporting cast members. Things started with a number of Baroque Works villains the Straw Hat Pirates will face. After that, we learned about more major characters. For example, Netflix started off by sharing that Callum Kerr is Smoker. We know Charithra Chandran will be Miss Wednesday, while Sendhil Ramamurthy is Nefertari Cobra. Some of the last ones revealed were Miss All-Sunday and Mr 0. They'll be played by Lera Abova and Joe Manganiello

However, we don't know who the voice actor for Tony Tony Chopper will be yet. The character's design hasn't even been fully revealed yet. Netflix only teased it so far. However, Katey Sagal will be Dr Kureha

There's no launch date for season 2 of the One Piece live-action adaptation yet, but the full first season is live on Netflix now. You can find the anime on Crunchyroll and Netflix, and Viz Media handles the manga outside of Japan.

my melody line theme 50th anniversary

Line released a new My Melody theme for the Sanrio mascot's 50th anniversary. This is a permanent addition to the Line shop, so you don't have to rush to purchase it.

The 50th anniversary My Melody Sanrio Line theme is a bright and pastel pink, with a My Melody crane game going on in the background of conversations. Unlike some recent goods and campaigns for this mascot, we don't see any characters like Kuromi or My Sweet Piano. My Melody is the only Sanrio mascot who appears in this theme, though she appears in different variations of herself. Like other Line themes, the icons when you're inputting your password, as well as the icons on the main menu, are different. This one uses My Melody heads.

My Melody first came out in 1975 as Hello Kitty's best friend. She is a white rabbit with a pink (or red) hood that covers her ears, and she usually has a flower or a bow on her right side. Because of her design, as well as her long history, My Melody is a very popular Sanrio mascot. In the 2024 popularity poll for Sanrio, she appeared in sixth place (with her rival Kuromi appearing in third). She also frequently appears in collaborations or campaigns, like when Zoff released Sanrio glasses.

The 50th anniversary My Melody Line theme is in the Line shop as a permanent fixture. It costs $3.50.

metaphor refantazio patch

Atlus released a new patch for Metaphor: ReFantazio, which contains some quality of life improvements such as the ability to change your party members via the main menu and equip screens. There are also some fixes for the Windows PC and Steam versions of the game.

All versions of Metaphor: ReFantazio will see some minor adjustments after we download the patch from Atlus. But the biggest parts of this update have to do with the main menu. After you install the patch, you'll be able to change your party members in Metaphor: ReFantazio via the equipment screen. In the past, you had to access the party screen in order to do this. You'll also be able to jump to different categories when clicking on the item menu. Atlus also fixed a bug that'll prevent progress after a certain input in the main menu.

PC fixes focus on quality of life complaints and bugs. For example, the patch fixed an issued in which the camera movement will slow down after using the mouse. It also fixed an issue that locks your frame rate after certain inputs.

Metaphor: ReFantazio came out in October 2024 and is a new IP from Atlus. The same creative team that worked on the Persona 3, 4, and 5 developed this game. It was very popular at launch, and received several major nominations in 2024.

Metaphor: ReFantazio is readily available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC. As of the time of writing, Atlus has not yet implemented the patch.

Dragon Ball Games Battle Hour 2025 Canceled Due to Los Angeles Fires

Bandai Namco announced that the Dragon Ball Games Battle Hour 2025 is canceled due to the fires in Los Angeles, California. There is no new date set for the events planned to happen during the events. It was originally going to be held at the Shrine Auditorium between January 18-19, 2025.

In the statement regarding the Dragon Ball Games Battle Hour 2025 cancellation, the Bandai Namco cited the decision as a safety measure due to the Los Angeles fires. It noted a desire to ensure everyone stayed safe, while also offering consideration to those affected by the disaster.

Here's the full message shared on social media.

https://twitter.com/db_eventpj/status/1879117565957673144

As usual, the event was going to provide a chance for the company to make announcements about video game and TCGs based on the Dragon Ball series, as well as hold finals tournaments for other titles. As a result, the Dragon Ball FighterZ, Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero, Dragon Ball Super Card Game Fusion World, and Dragon Ball Super Card Game Masters tournaments will be rescheduled and held at a different time. The event was also going to include promotional opportunities, such as a booth promoting the new Dragon Ball Daima anime running on Crunchyroll and a chance to take on a Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle challenge.

Bandai Namco isn't the only company changing plans as a result of the fires in Los Angeles. Square Enix also halted automatic housing demolition in Final Fantasy XIV. This was only done on North American Data Centers' worlds, out of consideration for victims of the fire who would be unable to play due to evacuations or other tragedies related to the fires.

There's no word yet on when the Dragon Ball Games Battle Hour 2025 events will be held now that it is canceled. Dragon Ball FighterZ can be found on the Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero is available on the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Eevee Pokemon Eievui Starlight Night pouches

Sega revealed new pouches based on the Pokemon Eevee and some of its Eeveelution evolutions. The company will release the pouches as crane game prizes in Japan on January 17, 2025.

The pouch collection will appear with the title Pokemon: Eievui & Starlight Night. Besides featuring Eevee's Japanese name, Sega will decorate the pouches with star constellations.

The lineup will consist of four designs, and that means three Eeveelutions will accompany Eevee in this collection. However, it will not feature the most common Gen I evolutions Flareon, Jolteon, and Vaporeon. Sega will instead include Espeon and Umbreon from the Gen II Johto games Pokemon Gold and Silver, as well as Sylveon, who debuted in the Gen VI entries Pokemon X and Y taking place in the France-inspired Kalos region.

Here are the sample images showing the pouches on both front and back sides:

Eevee is arguably one of the most popular Pokemon in the franchise. An unofficial poll held in Japan in late 2024 had Eevee win the cutest Pokemon poll. In April 2024, Ginza Cozy Corner sold Eevee-themed cakes where all eight Eeveelutions known as of 2024 also accompanied it.

The Eevee-themed Pokemon: Eievui & Starlight Night pouches will be available in select amusement centers across Japan on January 17, 2025.

You could suggest the end of the Nintendo Switch's lifespan is coming quite soon when Nintendo revisits older titles like Donkey Kong Country Returns. This isn't necessarily a bad thing! After all, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is a straightforward remaster that includes some neat quality-of-changes that make it worth a look 15 years later.

If there is one element in recent platformers that I find a bit annoying at times, it is the breezy difficulty. Games like Super Mario Wonder and even Astro Bot rarely challenged me. That isn't the case at all with Donkey Kong Country Returns HD. If you like 2D platforming levels that will push you to your limits, this is the one to check out.

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD Review
Image via Nintendo

Across 80 levels set in multiple worlds, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD features countless different activities. From rocket-jumping your way through danger and riding a mine cart to bashing through foes atop the rhino Rambi, one of the best parts of the game remains its variety. I never got bored, since there was always something new to see and do as a first-time player of this particular entry. The Jungle world looks notably lush and vibrant with the game's remastered visuals. Meanwhile, the Beach feels bright, cheery, and reminiscent of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. More importantly, though, was the ever-present difficulty of this experience.

Much of the beauty of this comes from the distinct separation between the background and the foreground. Levels often have the player shoot out of a barrel to a part of the level closer to the screen. Then, they might complete that section and fire further back into the background to keep going. This isn't just for show, either, as the mechanic plays into the challenges as well.

One of my favorite uses of this mechanic came during an octopus level. The entire level, we see a menacing octopus just chilling in the background and being all creepy. This isn't for show, as the octopus will randomly bust its tentacles through the wall or ceiling to increase the difficulty and threaten Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong. This type of gameplay element still surprised me, even though we see the concept in other titles, and it kept me on my toes in an engaging way.

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD Review
Image via Nintendo

It ties into an important element of this title that remains as true now as it did in 2010. What Nintendo does best with Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is continuously surprise and delight a player with challenges and a wealth of experiences. Each of the core 80 levels is already enough of a hurdle to overcome when dealing with the speedy and well-thought-out obstacles and enemies, but there is so much to else to do and collect as well.

Even beyond the already substantial number of worlds, there are some secret levels you can unlock. There are four letters that spell out "KONG" in most levels, and finding all of them unlocks a special level in each world. These are by far the most difficult ones. They usually require precise movements and perfect timing to complete. In addition to that, there is a co-op mode. One player takes on the role of Donkey Kong, while the other plays as Diddy. I had the most fun exploring each 2D level with another person. You can feed off of one another and help each other out, which relieves some of the stress.

Of course, this remaster of Donkey Kong Country Returns wouldn't be complete without some quality-of-life improvements. There is a general sharpening of the visuals. Each level pops with vibrant color and none of the grainy, blurry details of the Wii and 3DS versions.

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD Review
Image via Nintendo

More importantly, though, it is possible for things to feel a bit easier time with the new Modern Mode. This is an optional mode that gives you more hearts and lets someone hold more items. Naturally, the Classic Mode is still there for purists. But I find the Modern Mode is a neat addition for those fear they'll be frustrated.

Beyond a handful of graphical changes and a couple of meaningful changes like Modern Mode, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is a pretty straightforward remaster. In fact, I would say Nintendo plays its pretty safe here. I wouldn't recommend going into it expecting anything too radically new. That said, if you are a newcomer like myself, it is well worth a look since this is one of the most rewarding Nintendo platformers. However, if you are a veteran, just know that this is mostly the same game from 15 years ago, but for the Switch.

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD releases for Nintendo Switch on January 16, 2025. It also appeared on the Wii and 3DS.
