MAG Was an Underrated Gem

The year 2010 saw a lot of great shooters launch on their respective platforms. Vanquish and Halo Reach to name a few. But one that is rarely brought up much today is MAG for the PlayStation 3. With MechWarrior 3 and Crimson Skies under their belt, Zipper Interactive definitely set their sights high on this one with a first-person shooter that was promised to feature modern graphics, tight controls, and massive online matches with over 200 players at once in some modes.

The game, surprisingly, mostly delivered on its promises with those characteristics largely being brought to fruition. The graphics and presentation, while far from stupendous, were adequate all things considered, and the gameplay had that finely-tuned feel that required skill on the part of the player to be optimally efficient. Maps were also nice with lots of elevation and diversity that encouraged skirmishes between bunches of players at every turn. They never really reached the heights of some of the Battlefield series' maps, but they came close enough to deliver a fun experience to those who gave it a chance. As an online-focused experience, MAG featured several modes such as factions, which put two teams of 64 players against each other in a capture-the-flag sort of mission, Sabotage, with two teams of 32 players in a capture-and-hold game that would end with one team trying to take the other team's base, as well as a handful of other modes that used its massive lobby potential to great effect. And for a short while, it was a sight to behold it working out with so many players on the same map together in a video game in 2010.

MAG was received relatively well by critics for that massive online capability as well as it's good controls and leveling systems. There were some gripes here and there about bugs and a somewhat bland feel for the overall tone of the game, but overall opinions of the game were pretty good with a lot of 7s and 8s across the board. The game even sold relatively well for a short time, making it look like yet another success story for the PS3 ecosystem. What MAG was not particularly well prepared for though, was that 2010 was a year with a lot of other great shooters. Battlefield Bad Company 2 which would have a massive chunk of the online first-person shooter fanbase locked up upon its launch, as well as Halo Reach which of course would take much of the spotlight away from any other shooter at the time, especially for those gamers who owned both PS3's and 360's. I mean, if 2010 you had a choice between the new Halo game, the new battlefield game, or some newcomer called MAG, what would you choose? MAG was by all means a competent game with plenty to offer its players, but unfortunately it just didn't pop off the shelves when it was contrasted with other games in the franchise that had much more of an identity as well as massive built-in audiences.

MAG was just outmatched in basically every way, and its short window of existing without major competition was not enough time for it to solidify its own audience, nor were its massive lobbies enough to set it apart from its competition on a conceptual level. Unfortunately, MAG would end up in bargain bins very shortly. Now it's one of the PS3's least sought-after games with there being essentially nothing to do with it given that it's servers are long since shut down. It's a shame that such an ambitious project had to give way to the whims and harshness of the gaming space, but at the end of the day, players are going to go where they think other players are going to go. Especially with multiplayer games but it's also the fact that most people don't buy every game that comes out. Especially with the casual shooter audience, where usually, only one or two games are left standing once the dust settles every year. This is magnified even more by the game's reliance on its multiplayer modes. With no campaign, MAG went all-in on multiplayer functionality. It was a bold gamble, and one that sadly MAG ultimately would lose.

So where would a MAG 2 fit in today's gaming landscape? Well, it's certainly no secret that Sony has wanted their own flagship shooter franchise for a long time. Killzone certainly came close in some ways, but Sony has never really been able to get something as substantial as Halo off the ground. MAG was clearly another attempt at this, and despite Zipper Interactives valiant strides in this area, Sony shut them down shortly after MAG failed. They did their best with Unit 13 on the Vita, but sadly neither of those really took off either, so Zipper was defunct in 2012 in an effort to re-align Sony's resources. Given that the developer is gone, it's hard to say if a MAG 2 would ever really be a thing, especially considering that the entire PS4 generation, which was wildly successful, still wasn't a friendly-enough environment for Sony to want to take a risk on that IP. Sony seems to be more keen on just supporting the hell out of games like Destiny and Call of Duty with exclusive betas, DLC, and marketing rights for now, and I can see why that seems like the safer, more profitable strategy.

mag

Still, the allure of a super successful shooter franchise for PlayStation doesn't seem to have totally waned over at Sony. With Guerilla hiring for a new team to work on "networked gaming" and other acquisitions and diversifications surely on the way, they may finally get their wish of having a Halo equivalent in the ecosystem one day. That said, it probably won't be MAG 2. If Sony were to dig into any of its previous FPS IPs in an effort to make something today, Killzone and Resistance would likely be better picks due to the relevance they still have with many gamers new and old. It's never fun to hear for fans of MAG, but the odds are not looking good for a sequel to the little shooter that could. To put even more salt in the wound, we should also remember that the Battle Royale craze has already come and likely seen its peak in popularity with games like Fortnite. For another MAG to come out it would need something a little more than the "we have giant lobbies" hook. That was pretty cool ten years ago but wouldn't really be very impressive today.

Whatever happens or doesn't happen with MAG going forward, it'll always be a game that is remembered fondly by those that really gave it a chance way back in 2010. It was ambitious and surprisingly well-made all things considered. Despite it not really amounting to what it was clearly trying to, MAG was a fun experiment if nothing else. And perhaps a fun memory is what its better off staying.

Sony Santa Monica Is Hiring A Lead Writer For An Unannounced Title

PlayStation logo

Sony Santa Monica has largely been synonymous with the God of War franchise since the first game released back in 2004. That was reinforced with 2018's God of War that saw huge critical acclaim and sales for the company. The sequel to that game, Raganork, has been announced to come this year (though that seems unlikely at this point), but it's not the only thing the company has cooking up.

On their official Twitter, Santa Monica has put up a listing for a Lead Writer job on a new unannounced project. This actually isn't the first time we've heard of them working on something else, as at the beginning of the year they were also hiring for an Art Director for a title. It's unclear if these job listings are for the same project or not, but it seems likely unless the company is working on a few smaller games alongside Raganork.

Whether this is a new IP or a God of War spin-off is anyone's guess at this point. It's hard to parse how far along a project is without knowing its scope and the nature of game development means people come and go frequently, but with these positions being looked for, the odds are whatever this is is probably a good ways off.

Xbox Game Pass Twitter Teases New Game, Asks About "Mysterious Signal" And "Anomaly"

Xbox Game Pass

It's been something of a big day for the Xbox brand as well as Xbox Game Pass. Bethesda is now officially a part of Microsoft and their games will be slowly added to the service as time goes on. 20, in fact, of their classic catalog came today. But it seems as if there is more coming to the service, and a cryptic email may have you wondering what else is coming soon.

The official Xbox Game Pass Twitter posted an email from the tongue-in-cheek PR leaker Melissa McGamepass. There she talks about a new game confirmed to be coming to the service, not related to the other announcement (presumably meaning the Bethesda announcement). She goes on to ask if anyone else has been hearing a "mysterious signal" and if she is an "anomaly" in that.

As some have pointed out, it seems to be hints towards Outriders, as that game has plot points revealing around finding a mysterious radio signal and a superpower-giving anomaly. However, that comes out April 1st, so it seems somewhat unlikely. But there's not a lot else that matches up with the wording, though it's also possible the wording isn't that important or really hinting at anything specific. For now, it's a mystery.

The Elder Scrolls Online Has Reached Over 18 Million Players

The Elder Scrolls Online - Murkmire

When one thinks of MMORPGs in this day and age, you almost assuredly think of either World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy 14. It's largely a two man show for many in the genre today, but they aren't the only two shows in town, and there is another that's managed to get a pretty sizable audience for itself with The Elder Scrolls Online.

Based on Bethesda's hugely popular fantasy world, Online released in 2014 and has since seen a lot of updates and expansions. As revealed by ZeniMax Online Studios Studio Director Matt Firor at the roundtable discussion regarding the Microsoft purchase of Bethesda (which you can see in full through here), the game has now exceeded 18 million players, and over 3 million of those were from 2020 alone. He also acknowledged that the game had a lot of issues when it originally released, but said they have done a lot to address those problems in the near 7 years the game has been on the market.

The Elder Scrolls Online is available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. PS5 and Xbox Series X/S native versions are also planned, though do not have dates as of now. ZeniMax Online has also stated they are working on a new AAA IP, but as of now no details have emerged about it.

Outriders Demo Gets Update For Matchmaking, Motion Blur Toggle, And More

Outriders

Next month will kick off with the long awaited Outriders from Square Enix and People Can Fly. The game promises lots of aggressive action for both solo and multiplayer play, and you can try it right now if you want. The game has a demo, which has been downloaded and tried out by a lot of people. It's also something the developer has been taking a lot of notes for feedback on, and now we have an update to address some of that.

As you can see below, the team has released an update that looks to tackle a few issues that players had. Maybe top at the list was a motion blur toggle that many will be welcome to have. Alongside that is also some improvements for matchmaking as well as addressing bugs and crash issues some had. Right now the update is only available for the PlayStation and PC versions, but the Xbox versions will be getting the same treatment shortly. You can see the full patch notes below via the game's official Twitter.

Outriders will release April 1st for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC and Stadia. The demo is available now on all those platforms with the exception of Stadia.

Next Life is Strange Features New Cast and Story, New Power

Next Life is Strange

Square Enix will be announcing the next Life is Strange title on March 18th at its digital showcase. In the meantime, the Steam pages for Life is Strange 1 and 2, and Life is Strange: Before the Storm released a "glimpse" at the next protagonist (see above). A new cast, new story and new power were also promised.

Rumors about the next Life is Strange have been circulated since this past January. Insider Emily Rogers reported that Deck Nine of Before the Storm fame would be working on the sequels since Dontnod and Square Enix parted ways "a long, long time ago." A more recent rumor on ResetEra revealed that the next title would be called Life is Strange: True Colors and that the new protagonist's name is Alex.

Alex's power is apparently about reading minds with characters having different colors showcasing their emotions. It also seems there will be a heavier focus on music than the first game. While the rumor should be taken with a grain of salt, it did note that the sequel would be announced "pretty soon."

Stay tuned for more details next when Square Enix Presents goes live on March 18th at 10 AM PT.

Dying Light 2 Developer Update Announced for March 17th

dying light 2

Techland has announced a developer update for Dying Light 2. It will take place on March 17th and those who join the game's Discord can see it first. The official tweet didn't show much else, except what seems to be a Volatile emerging from the shadow.

Dying Light 2 has had its share of problems ever since its delay last year. Reports emerged of the game's development being in disarray while writer Chris Avellone was dropped due to sexual harassment allegations. Narrative designer Pawel Selinger would also leave the company in January, following which another report detailed the apparent mismanagement of the studio and its lack of direction on Dying Light 2.

The game is currently in development for Xbox One, PS4 and PC but will also be coming Xbox Series X/S and PS5. With the Collector's Edition being previously leaked, perhaps there will be a new release window or gameplay footage. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.

However, it was a strong month for video game hardware sales in general. Sales were at $406 million, which is a 121 percent increase compared to last year.

As noted by NPD analyst Mat Piscatella to VentureBeat, "This is the highest total for a February month since the $468 million reached in February 2011. In terms of lifetime dollar sales, the Switch has already surpassed the Nintendo DS and ranks as the overall seventh best-selling platform. It ranked second in unit and dollar sales for February 2021 and through its four-month period, it's already the fastest selling platform in US history.

As far as the 1.5 Update is concerned, the beta testing signups have already started for it. It is speculated that the update will be bringing the Chasm region into the game. Amidst that, players are wondering whether Baal will be playable in the game. Here is all you need to know about it.

Genshin Impact Electro Archon – When will Baal (Raiden) be playable?

Baal aka God of Eternity aka Raiden Shogun is the Electro Archon who is the ruler of Inazuma. She is quite a strict ruler and has enforced the Vision Hunt Decree to eliminate the use of Visions. It is also stated that she is known by a different name by the locals, just like Rex Lapis is known as Zhongli.

For those who are wondering whether Baal will be playable in the game, it should be noted that as of now there is no information about it. Even in the game, we have just heard about Baal from Zhongli and are yet to see her in the game. However, considering that Venti and Zhongli are playable in the game, we can expect Baal to be playable as well once the Inazuma region is added into the game. The Inazuma region is slated to release in the 1.6 Update, which will be arriving sometime in June.

GTA 5 Remake

The brand new GTA 5 Remake mod on PC allows you to play the eight-year-old game with late eight-gen visuals.

Without any doubt, GTA 5 is the most successful game of Rockstar Games to this date when it comes to financial and commercial data. The game has sold over 140 million units since its launch in 2013. Despite experiencing a graphical leap after its launch on last-gen consoles, GTA 5 is supposed to get another visual rework once it hits the new Sony and Microsoft platforms later this year. That being said, there are still some ways to get an unofficial GTA 5 Remake on PC.

Nb.Design's new mod is a brand new unofficial visual enhancement for the PC version of GTA 5 that adds a new pack of trees, rocks, weather effects, and grass to the game. Along with them, the GTA 5 Remak Mod also improves the overall reflection quality and lighting. The good news is the mod is compatible with FiveM and NVE mods.

In order to get the new remake mod, you have to be an Nb.Design Patreon member, which simply means you can't get the mod for free. Visit here if you want to purchase the subscription. We strongly suggest you read the requirements of the mod before subscribing or downloading it. Genshin Impact 1.5 Leaks: Baizhu, Yaoyao, Dendro Not in 1.5 Update, Reruns Likely

genshin impact dendro baizhu yaoyao

miHoYo's free-to-play gacha role-playing-game is one of the most trending things in the industry right now. The game had a playerbase of around 40 million last year and it has continued to grow over the months.

Quite recently, the developers introduced the Hu Tao banner in the game, which was one of the most sought characters. As the Moment of Bloom banner comes to an end, the next major update for the game, the 1.4 Update, is all set to arrive. The update will be adding a new character Rosaria, a new in-game dating sim, and tons of new items and weapons.

Genshin Impact 1.5 Leaks: Baizhu, Yaoyao Dendro Not in 1.5 Update

miHoYo has started the beta testing sign-ups for the next update after 1.4. The 1.5 Update is rumored to bring the Chasm region to the map, and alongside that, a few new characters are also expected to arrive. It is being speculated for a while now that two Dendro characters will be making their debut in the game. This includes Baizhu and Yaoyao. However, things seem to have changed a bit.

As per reliable leaker Genshin leaks, we are not getting Dendro in the 1.5 Update. Dendro is one of the seven elements in the game, but as of now, there are no Dendro characters available in the game. This means fans who have been waiting for Baizhu and Yaoyao might need to wait a bit more for them to arrive. The source of this information is a Tieba post from a data miner, which makes it quite reliable.

However, Genshin Leaks states that considering this is still the beta, things might be changed or added in the final version of the game. There is still over a month to go for the 1.5 Update, and we might as well see Dendro getting introduced in the game. As of now, Dendro seems to be less likely to arrive in 1.5. On the other hand, another tweet by the same user suggests that we might get some reruns. It will be interesting to see which character gets a rerun, with some rumors already stating that Zhongli might be one of them.

Genshin Impact is available on PC, PS4, PS5, and Mobile.

Genshin Impact Account Hack: How to Avoid it and Will 2FA be Added?

genshin impact account hack

Genshin Impact is undoubtedly one of the most popular games in the industry right now. A lot has been going on in the game in the past few days, and a major 1.4 Update is all set to roll out in the next few days.

Amidst all that, the entire Genshin Impact community has become paranoid of their accounts getting hacked. Here is what we know about the hack so far and how players can avoid it.

Genshin Impact Account Hack: How to avoid it?

Recently, a large number of players have reported that their accounts have been hacked. The exact reason behind it is unknown, but many believe it is due to a large database leak that has happened. While we are not able to verify those claims, we can instead suggest ways how you can secure your account.

  • Change your password: Most of the time users a common passwords for their emails and game accounts. If their email password gets leaked in a data breach or due to some other reason, that means both their accounts will be at risk. This should be avoided at all costs. Users should try to use a strong and unique password that has a combination of special characters, alphabets, and numbers. This makes it less vulnerable to brute force attacks and improves the security of your account.
  • Link your mobile number and email to your account: You should make sure that you have your mobile number linked to your account. This will prevent your account password from getting changed, although the hacker might still get access to your account if he has your password.
  • Avoid phishing links: Be it Genshin Impact or any other game, you should stay away from all sites which offer you any in-game item for free. More often than not, these websites are fake and will ask for your account credentials which can get it hacked.
  • UID alone can't get your account hacked: This has been one of the most debatable things in the community, and many players are paranoid of their UID being leaked online. It should be noted that if you are using a strong enough password, UID alone isn't enough to get your account hacked.

Genshin Impact Account Hack: Will 2FA be added?

As of now, miHoYo hasn't stated that 2FA will be added or not. But considering the recent developments, it just makes sense for the developers to add it as soon as possible. We will keep you updated once that is added. Until then, stay away from phishing links and secure your account!

Genshin Impact is available on PC, PS4, PS5, and Mobile.

Why Did Genshin Impact KFC Collab Cancel in Shanghai, China?

Genshin Impact KFC Collab

The Genshin Impact KFC collab in China tempted a lot of fans to head to the closest branch of KFC in their town and get the new skins of the game, but at the end of the day, they returned home disappointed and empty-handed.

Even before its official announcement, there were some huge leaks around a collaboration between Genshin Impact and KFC this month in China. Last night, a lot of Genshin Impact fans in China stood in crowded lines to eventually purchase their Genshin Impact-themed meals and get some in-game skins and cosmetics. However, the event didn't end well at the local Police in China decided to cancel the Genshin Impact KFC collab due to the concerns over COVID-19 spread.

Last night, a lot of Chinese Redditors started posting unbelievable images from the lines in front of the KFC branches in different cities of the country after the beginning of the Genshin Impact event. The reception of fans for such an event was truly unexpected for KFC. If they knew how many crowded lines were going to appear in front of the branches, they would probably consider some safety guidelines for the customers.

Genshin Impact KFC Collab Cancelled

From TechRaptor

It's yet to be seen how the event would be continued in the near future, but the KFC managers will probably need to reach an agreement with the Police department of China to ensure the safety of customers and lower the danger of COVID-19 spread. The Police officers mostly intervened in Shanghai and Hangzhou, but more stores might consider cancelling the event if people continue to make crowded lines in front of KFC restaurants.

Genshin Impact is currently available for free on PS4 and PC. The game is set to be launched on PS5 and Nintendo Switch sometime in the future, as per the developer, miHoYo.

Recently, some of the players have started receiving a weird message while playing the game on some of the game's servers. Other players usually ask them to visit this site which is known as blox.pink, and apparently, these will reward them with free Robux as per the message. Many users are wondering if the website is legit or not.

It should be noted that a majority of sites offering Robux for free are not legit. Most of the servers are filled with users spamming this site link, which is likely not real users at all. However, when players try to go to the blox.pink website the get redirected to blox.land website. This website is a survey website and after completing a survey, players will get some Robux into their account. Users have reported that they have successfully got Robux after going through the withdrawal process, without getting their accounts compromised.

That being said, there are a few things to note. First, this is not an official way of getting Robux. It might be possible the developers would ban users who obtained Robux via this method since it's not a legitimate way to get the in-game currency. Therefore, users are advised to bear caution while using these websites to get Robux.

Roblox is available on PC, Xbox One, Mobile, macOS.

What Is the Overwatch Nvidia Reflex Support Update on PC?

Overwatch PTR Update, Nvidia Reflex

The Overwatch Nvidia Reflex support update on Public Test Servers enables the PC players to use the technology for lowering the system latency.

Nvidia Reflex is a technology that has been built inside the company's graphics cards since the GTX 900 series. The main goal of the Overwatch Nvidia Reflex update is to reduce the system latency by 50%, which is a significant number.

  • MORE FROM OVERWATCH: Overwatch: How to Get New Pachimari Epic Roadhog Skin, Junkrat Emote, and Player Icon

As shown in the figure below, by enabling the Nvidia Reflex technology in Overwatch, using the company's most recent RTX 3000 graphics cards, the system latency has been reduced to half the normal number, which is incredible for competitive titles like Overwatch.

Overwatch Nvidia Reflex

The update is currently available in Public Test Servers and it probably takes a few weeks until it hits the main servers of the game as well. That said, it probably won't make a difference for you if the graphics processor you're using is something other than Nvidia.

In addition to adding Nvidia Reflex support to the PC version of the game, Blizzard recently rolled out a visual enhancement update for Overwatch on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles that allows the players to run the game in three different modes with the option to secure high resolution and lower frame rates or vice versa. There has been no similar patch for the PS5 version of the game so far.

Overwatch is now available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Blizzard has been working on the sequel to Overwatch for a few years now, but the game still won't be around anytime soon. The developers target a release date beyond 2022 for Overwatch 2 on both the current-gen and last-gen consoles.

Who is Kizuna AI? Meet Valentino's New VTuber Fashion Model

KIzuna Ai Valentino model fashion explained

Fashion brand Valentino revealed it partnered up with VTuber Kizuna Ai for its 2021 Spring Summer collection. Kizuna Ai was also featured as the cover girl of commons&Sense Issue 60. Many pages of the magazine feature Kizuna Ai modelling for the Valentino 2021SS Collection, showcasing several outfits and bags.  You love Valentino and its fashion, but have no idea who Kizuna Ai is and what VTuber are? We're here to explain everything.

Simply put, a Virtual YouTuber is a character created by an individual or a company, who usually has an anime-stylized avatar, and uploads videos like a normal YouTuber would.

Kizuna Ai, who debuted in 2016 in Japan, started this Virtual YouTuber, or VTuber trend. The first Kizuna Ai videos featured the character simply introducing herself, with her actress controlling the character through motion recognition. Soon after, Kizuna Ai became a social phenomenon as several short clips of her playing games went viral. Now, Kizuna Ai has nearly 3 million subscribers, virtual concerts, still play games, has her own Virtual Reality game, and has different actresses voicing her for multiple languages.

Following Kizuna Ai's success, many other VTubers started appearing, either independently, or backed by companies. Now, nearly every Japanese company or game studio nowadays have their own VTuber for promotion. Or are turning their beloved and established characters into VTubers. Many game live streams or announcement showcases invite popular VTubers as guests as well. VTubers are even invited to variety shows on Japanese TV.

Rather than developing a 3D model like Kizuna Ai, which requires huge effort and money, most VTubers instead use Live2D. A technology that automatically animates 2D illustrations. Many VTubers use 2D portraits animated with Live2D. It's a cheap and easy access to the world of VTubing. Regularly making new videos for a VTuber is no easy task however, even for a big company and game developers.

While Kizuna Ai popularized VTubers, it's however important to note this isn't particularly a new concept.

Niconico Douga, which is basically the Japanese version of YouTube, has been featuring videos similar to VTubers for decades now. Vocaloid characters such as Hatsune Miku, which are basically virtual idols who can sing anything you want them to in robotic tunes, have been around for years. As well as the Miku Miku Dance program, or MMD, which is widely used to animate and create videos of not only Vocaloid but any type of characters.

Another important thing to note is that the identity behind a VTuber is rarely ever made public. As more and more big capitalistic companies get into the VTuber business, this will inevitably lead to certain issues such as lack of credit. The original Japanese version of Kizuna Ai was only officially revealed in April 2020, four years after her debut, to be voiced by Japanese voice actress Nozomi Kasuga. Kizuna Ai also got her own company back then, Kizuna Ai Co., Ltd., following the report of huge debt suffered by original managing company Activ8.

Kizuna Ai modelling for Valentino is another huge step in the process of VTubers entering the mainstream space

  • HOLOLIVE – Vtuber Amelia Watson and her Valentine cards

VTubers are mainly popular in Japan, China, and Asia. However, some companies, such as Hololive, are also launching English audience focused VTubers.

Hololive by Cover Cop is, besides Kizuna Ai, one of the most important VTuber agencies. It's one of the most popular agglomeration of VTuber there is with over a hundred talents. Hololive is everywhere, most notably thanks to how quick it was to introduce English VTubers for a broader audience. Hololive English was revealed in September 2020, including several names you'll definitely end up seeing if you stick around anime fandoms on social media: Watson Amelia, Ninomae Ina'nis, Takanashi Kiara, Mori Calliope, and Gawr Gura. That shark girl with the blue hoodie you've probably seen at least once? That's Gawr Gura.

There's an Hololive Indonesia, Korea, and India as well. VTubers are particularly popular in Indonesia, China, and several Asian countries besides Japan.

That's it for our introduction for VTubers and Kizuna Ai. Needless to say, we tried to keep this as basic as possible and didn't go into details. DualShockers will be covering more and more VTuber content in the long run, so stick with us if you're like to discover some interesting VTubers and learn more about this phenomenon.

Apex Legends March 12 Update – No-Fill Players, Heat Shields, and Ring Fury Stage 2

Apex Legends Chinatown

This week was a big one for fans of Apex Legends. The start of the Chaos Theory Collection event and the launch of the Switch port has given fans plenty to talk about.

Between character nerfs, weapon rebalances, and the newest game modes, the developers at Respawn Entertainment are juggling quite a bit.

Today, they shipped a patch that hopefully balances the game better with all of the new changes and additions.

Here's everything you need to know about the March 12 Apex update.

  • NERFED: Apex Legends Mastiff Update – Chaos Theory Weapon Changes Explained
Apex Legends Chaos Theory Collection Event

Photo from the official Apex Legends YouTube page

Apex March 12 Update

The update was delivered to us today in the form of a small Twitter thread. It is significantly smaller than the massive Chaos Theory update, but it still seems like it should help rebalance the game.

"No-Fill" Players

Added earlier this week, players now have the option to drop solo, by unchecking the "no-fill" box before the start of a match. Respawn said today that matches will now be limited to only two "no-fill" players. They said in their tweet, "This is a temporary measure while we solve a problem that was causing games to start with fewer than 60 players."

Heat Shields

The newly introduced heat shields are being taken out of ranked and private matches until "further notice." It's unclear specifically why they've been disabled by Respawn other than their tweet citing some necessary bug fixes. They say that they're hoping to "fix some bugs with it by early next week, for those using it in the Ring Fury Takeover playlist."

Ring Fury Stage 2

Another small change to the game's playlists comes in the form of an extension to Ring Fury Stage 2. It will be around until Monday, to seemingly make up for any lost playtime due to the heat shield changes.

Apex Tracker

The final dev update has nothing to do with the actual software of the game. The changes listed above are the only things being altered in the Apex March 12 update. In the final tweet of the thread, Respawn updated their "Apex Tracker" Trello account that helps give the community a voice. They asked for feedback saying that they "would love to know if people find it valuable—if so, we'll make it more of a regular (weekly) thing."

The Imagined Leviathan Review

In what is described as "a short poetic survival horror" game by the development team at Far Few Giants, The Imagined Leviathan is a walking simulator with a unique aesthetic and an even more unique method of storytelling. Does this arthouse title manage to stand out, or is it a little too avant garde for its own good?

The Imagined Leviathan Review

The arctic wasteland of Britain is a grim place, once that is freezing cold and full of whiteness and nothing more. As the protagonist of the game, players must seek out fuel and kindling, gather life words, and make a journey to Steel Henge to pass a message onto the next generation. It's a brutal journey in a dark world, one that players must achieve by themselves and at all costs.

This all sounds like a great premise, and it is, but The Imagined Leviathan is obtuse to a fault. As players gather life words to "sacrifice life," they'll learn of the absolutely bizarre. Talks of hit and runs, ancient Mayan descendents ruling the world, doubting reality while eating a ham sandwich, and learning the grim truth about third world labor for our favorite electronics might seem deep, but in reality it is unhinged. The game is artsy to a fault, and though this mysterious nature might lead to a feeling of uneasiness, it also feels unjointed at the same time. One could say that things are open to interpretation and can be seen in a number of different ways, but we felt that the overall storytelling was lacking when all was said and done.

The same goes for the core gameplay loop this game features. As players read the words in the sky and the ground, they move from one spot to the other, gathering fuel and kindling for the next fire. The same thing happens every time, and it oftentimes feels like busywork and nothing more. The occasional threat poses its head where players must keep quiet, but this too is obtuse and feels more cryptic than anything else. It is far too easy to get lost, and getting lost in a world where absolutely looks the same due to it being in black and white does not provide an entertaining experience.

It's not like there is much to explore in the grand scheme of things, as The Imagined Leviathan runs for a brief 20 minutes. There are different messages that players can pass on at Steel Henge, but there is little variation between playthroughs since the story remains the same. There are also no achievements to speak of, though admittedly they would feel forced in a title like this.

The Imagined Leviathan tries something new with its monochromatic world and poetic prose, but the disjointed nature of its storytelling and its hollow gameplay prevent it from achieving the artistic vision the developers sought out to achieve.

This review of The Imagined Leviathan was done on the PC. The game was freely downloaded.
