A good scary game is often a thrilling experience. And if you are currently a Game Pass subscriber and in the mood to play something terrifying, creepy, or just downright spooky you already have access to some fantastic horror games for no additional cost. This is nice, because the only thing scarier than deadly…
Yesterday, ReedPOP announced that it was indefinitely canceling PAX South with no plans for when or if it will return. The organizers blamed a lack of growth and the ongoing covid-19 pandemic.
Roblox, one of the most popular games in the world, has been down for over a day now and while many frustrated players are blaming an in-game Chiplote promotion, the devs say that free burritos aren't the reason for the outage.
Don't let the highly stylized art fool you. The first-person shooter Forgive Me Father is unsettling because of its flat comic-book graphics, not in spite of them. At first, I was charmed by how the art style made the game feel like a distant cousin to Paper Mario. By the end of the second level, I was a paranoid mess.
Using the best VPN comes with many perks, like privacy, extra security against attacks, and access to sites from other regions. However, if you use the Xbox Game Pass, or pay for streaming services like Netflix and Disney Plus, chances are you'd rather not add another monthly subscription to your list. Thankfully, there are a wealth of free VPNs available from a wide range of providers, albeit with functionality sacrifices and limitations.
Of course, before diving into the wonderful world of free VPNs, it's important to learn how each works before trusting it with your data. Naturally, even if a VPN is free, it still costs its provider money to run, so it's important to identify any potential hidden costs or caveats associated with seemingly free services. This includes agreeing to your gaming PC becoming an exit node for other users, intrusive browser ads, and the risk of your data being logged and sold to third parties.
That said, there are still free VPNs out there that can provide a great service without paying a monthly fee. While you'll still need to pay to experience the best VPN subscription and all its intrinsic benefits, you should still be able to find a good balance between usability and security when using a free version of a VPN.
Warner Bros' rumoured Smash Bros-style platform fighting game, supposedly codenamed Multiversus, has had a flood of leaks this week since the initial post on Monday. Stages, controls, early screenshots, and design documents have all since been leaked - as well as much of the Multiversus fighter roster.
Since then a relative flood of info has come out about the project, which if true points to a roster of characters from diverse sources such as DC Comics, Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, Steven Universe, and Rick and Morty. A number of design documents have also supposedly made their way online thanks to Smash Bros content creator PapaGenos (via ResetEra).
Resident Evil Village is one of the best games of 2021 and one of the scariest games on PC, which makes it all the more baffling that Capcom didn't have the confidence in it to provide fans with DLC. In a new report, Capcom says that not only will there be Resident Evil 8 DLC, but it'll be free too.
While it is obvious that Capcom - for whatever reason - didn't think Resident Evil Village needed any DLC, we've long known that the publisher had a change of heart and confirmed at E3 in June that the latest Resident Evil will indeed get DLC. It didn't provide any further detail about this at the time, other than that development had "just started" on it - so would probably be a while.
Tucked into this week's Capcom Integrated Report (as spotted by The Loadout), however, is a small note about Resident Evil Village - that says that at least some of the upcoming DLC actually will be free.
The big No Man's Sky Halloween update has brought a touch of Dune to Hello Games' epic space sim, with this week's Expedition 4: Emergence adding giant sandworms to the mix - as well as the ability to ride them.
Now developer Hello Games has decided to readdress the balance and has brought Dune to its own space epic in the Halloween "Emergence" update. The latest Expedition adds a proper narrative - for the first time - set on the barren world of Wasan, where the player has to investigate the colossal Titan Worms and the involvement of the worm-worshipping native cult.
The big Halloween update for Phasmophobia seems to have been hiding a creepy stowaway, as fans have discovered that none other than the infamous Slender Man is hiding in the woods around Maple Lodge Campsite - which was added earlier this week.
Phasmophobia developer Kinetic Games is well-known for creepy little teases - the team particularly loves to throw out hints about new ghosts way before releasing them, as the run-up to this week's big Halloween Nightmare update proved. This released on Monday and brought with it four new ghosts, the new Nightmare difficulty, various major tweaks, and the new Maple Lodge Campsite map.
The campsite map is different from previous maps in that it's set in the woods, and players digging into the map have discovered all manner of Easter eggs - including the mask of Jason Voorhees and a dead body under the cabin, which presumably belongs to one of the new ghosts. The creepiest secret, however, is Slender Man hiding in the woods.
Wondering how the New World server transfer system works? When Amazon's MMO first launched, servers were quickly overwhelmed with players eager to start adventuring on the island of Aeturnum. This led to immense queue times in several regions, and Amazon added hundreds of new servers to allow players to get started as soon as possible.
To encourage players to begin their quest on one of these newer servers, Amazon Game Studios decided to grant each player a free server transfer token when the server transfer service becomes available. This token allows players to join their friends and reassess their server choice once things calm down a little.
When New World server transfers initially went live, the process resulted in a few unintended glitches, including a gold duplication bug that led to the transfers being closed down again. Transfers were re-enabled with the 1.0.4 update. There are a few things you need to know before packing your bags and leaving for a new server - here's how to transfer your New World character.
When you think of Fatal Frame, one of the first things that comes to mind is the Camera Obscura. However, when the series originally began, the development team actually considered a few other objects instead. Nintendo Everything recently spoke with Keisuke Kikuchi, the producer of the Fatal Frame. There was some talk about the new release of Maiden of Black...

Golf Club Wasteland is a lovely, haunting experience in the post-apocalypse where almost all human life has been wiped out, and Earth is a golf course for the ultra-rich who escaped to Mars.
Fallout 76 wasn't very good at launch. It was prone to griefers, bereft of life, clunky, and buggy as all hell - worse than Cyberpunk, and it's not even close. Many of those issues remain: crashes are common, bugs still abound, and the UI is more nightmarish than any Scorched you'll come across in post-apocalyptic Appalachia. But they're less severe than they were, and no longer laid bare in an empty world where players have little to do other than harass each other.
The last three years have had their ups and downs, but a few key updates - Wastelanders, Steel Dawn, The Legendary Run, and One Wasteland For All - have made Fallout 76's world a drastically different one than players entered back in 2018. There are NPCs now, and proper quest lines with branching dialogue that make it feel more like a Fallout game. It's a better MMO, too, with more daily quests, endgame gear, and roleplay options. So, what if Fallout 76 came out right now?
Well, to start with, it's pretty unlikely that Fallout 76 would be sitting on a Metacritic score of just over 50%. Judging from the handful of scored and unscored reviews that cropped up following the release of Wastelanders, we'd probably be looking at a score a little higher than 60%, maybe even higher given recent updates like Worlds and Locked & Loaded.
It looks like a Fortnite x League of Legends crossover may be coming next week, according to a reliable Fortnite insider and leaker. The Fortnite leak suggests that popular character Jinx will be available as a skin soon, as a tie-in with the upcoming Arcane animated series.
Now, according to reliable Fortnite leaker Shiina, it looks like two of the world's most popular online games are finally doing a crossover - League of Legends is coming to Fortnite, starting with the ever-popular Jinx. According to Shiina, this collaboration is to celebrate the release of Riot's Arcane Netflix animated series on November 7 - which will show the origins of Jinx and her sister Vi as they grow up on the mean streets of Zaun.
Want to know how to use a Minecraft pumpkin? Pumpkins aren't just for Halloween - they're one of the most versatile blocks in Minecraft, with several surprising uses. They appear naturally in most biomes, but require a grass block with air above it in order to spawn. They also naturally show up in stem farm rooms inside woodland mansions, but those are particularly tricky to find - luckily, we've identified a Minecraft seed that spawns you a mere hundred blocks away from one.
You'll also find carved pumpkins - the spooky siblings of regular pumpkins - in rail rooms in woodland mansions. Carved pumpkins show up in pillager outposts inside tents alongside normal pumpkins, too, and atop scarecrows. Pumpkins also generate instead of hay bales outside taiga and snowy taiga villages. There are even more ways to get your hands on a pumpkin - they have a 15.6% chance of showing up in chests inside shipwrecks, and you may be able to buy one from a wandering trader.
There's one more way to get hold of a carved pumpkin - if a hostile Minecraft mob spawns during Halloween, there's a chance they'll show up sporting a carved pumpkin on their head. In order to steal the pumpkin, you'll have to kill it with a tool you've added Looting to at a Minecraft enchantment table. The chances of it dropping are pretty slim - you're better off carving your own, which we'll explain how to do below, before guiding you through the Minecraft pumpkin's varied uses.
One of the first things that may strike you about Mundaun, a very unsettling horror game that released earlier this year, is just how comfortable with weirdness it is. There are hay people hunting you in the night, monstrous masks inspired by traditional Swiss carnival costumes, and the decapitated head of the goat Allegria, bleating and chattering from your backpack.
Many horror games either try to establish a sense of mundane familiarity in a recognisable, contemporary world before shattering that familiarity, or else rely on the dusty, done-to-death setting of haunted manors. In most cases, neither approach does much to surprise. Horror often relies on the grotesque, but Mundaun's weirdness is different. It is an earthy kind of weirdness, a strangeness with roots so deep that it might be confused with familiarity. It's a horror that smells not of blood, but of hay and dung, snow and soot.
By the time you read this I'll be playing Back 4 Blood, gunning down hordes of the undead until viscera and gore cake my player's clothes, and my eyes become infinite pools of horror that have seen more than enough death for one lifetime. Or perhaps I'll be creeping around a haunted house in Phasmophobia, my smudge stick in-hand and a cavalcade of petrified friends whimpering down their mics. Maybe I'll be running from Pyramid Head in Dead By Daylight with my pals in tow. A thought has been brewing in the cold recesses of my mind for a while now, and it is simply this: when did horror become a team game?
Happy Halloween weekend, gang! Oh, hang on, I meant to say: BOO! Alright, there we go. But the greatest horror this weekend isn't any ghost or ghoulie, it's UK clocks switching back to GMT this weekend. Sure, your phone and computer will automatically update, but your heating will be irksome until you again dig out the manual to remember how to change it. And a secondary blast of horror comes from the fact that not every country changes their clocks just yet, so if you deal with business across timezones... good luck, pal. But, what are you playing this weekend?

Sometimes, Halloween can be just a bit too scary. There are ghosts and ghouls and undead and…assholes. Living is frightening and, so too, is the thought of death and mortality. That's exactly why Skul: The Hero Slayer works as a comfy spooky game. It's not really scary. It just pretends to be.
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night put an extra dash of 'vania in the Metroidvania world thanks to the influence of long-time Castlevania lead Koji Igarashi, and the devs have kept things going with a robust array of free content update - though those updates have been subject to several delays. But they're still coming, and now the devs have confirmed a few details about the next new playable character.
"We can confirm that this new character is NOT from the world of Bloodstained," the devs say in the announcement. "We have been working closely with a well-known partner to bring their character (and a friend) into the game. As with previous characters, you will be able to explore the entire map, though certain abilities will need to be acquired before some areas and bosses can be accessed. Along the way you will be able to increase the rank and class of the character's special ability to grow in power."
The Bloodstained roadmap previously put both "special crossover content" and the new playable character in the fourth quarter of 2020. Then in the first quarter of 2021. Now there's no clear release timeframe, as the developers are dealing with "major technical issues".
The Final Fantasy XIV devs issued a series of changes to its conduct policy earlier this week, clarifying the rules around stalking and harassment (and erotic role-play) and providing more details about how the penalty system works. But those were just public clarifications of rules the devs had already been using behind the scenes. The only actual rule changes regard advertising on the Party Finder, and in a new update the devs have provided some additional context on why those changes have been made.
The new rules ban advertising help for clearing duties via the Party Finder - in other words, you can't sell clears there. You can, however, advertise the fact that you're buying clears. Mercenary activities for in-game rewards are totally okay with the devs, it's just that real-money traders were posting ads for gil-driven clears when the real transaction would be for actual money.
"Though the situation varied with each region," global community producer Toshio Murouchi explains, "there were an enormous number of cases where RMT vendors created recruitment listings in the Party Finder under the guise of mercenary activities, which hindered normal players in their use of the Party Finder. The changes made at this time are intended as measures to rectify this situation and promptly crack down on fraudulent recruitment listings."
One of the design pillars of upcoming grand strategy game Victoria 3 is for diplomacy to be just as powerful a tool as warfare is - the latter is, after all, the continuation of the former by other means, as Carl von Clausewitz is often quoted as saying. Victoria 3's diplomacy system is almost a game in itself, giving you plenty of options for winning an exchange with another nation without ever having to fire a shot.
The latest Victoria 3 dev diary goes deep into 'diplomatic plays.' These are the opening moves for any conflict in Victoria 3, so you'll inevitably go through the process prior to any war. Diplomatic plays begin with opening moves that correspond to the war goals you may be familiar with from other Paradox games: you'll make a play to annex another nation as subject, or to demand that it cede territory to you, or to abolish slavery.
Once you've picked out your play, the target will be notified, along with any nations that have a strong interest in the region and are considered 'potential participants' in any resulting conflict. Overlords and allies, for example, are going to take interest in what happens during negotiations.
Subnautica: Below Zero launched out of early access earlier this year, and it seems we don't have much longer to wait before we find out what's next from developer Unknown Worlds. Krafton, the company behind PUBG, has announced its intent to purchase Unknown Worlds, and in a press release has revealed that the studio's next game is due to hit early access next year.
"In addition to ongoing updates for Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero, Unknown Worlds is currently working on a new genre-defining game, which is slated to launch into early access in 2022", according to the press release.
In an interview earlier this year, the devs told us that it's likely they'll eventually return to Subnautica, and that such a sequel would be an opportunity for them to "rethink" multiplayer. Even then, though, they made clear that the studio was focused on a brand-new project, and that the focus for now would be on new ideas. (Sorry, Natural Selection fans - that means you're out of luck too.)
Steam's annual Halloween sale has risen from the grave once again, with prices on the best PC games that are so low, they're scary. Whether you're in the mood for horror games, or you'd like to play something more Halloweeny than actually scary, Steam likely has a deal on something that would fit the bill, and we've gone ahead and picked out a couple standout bargains.
If you need to get caught up on Resident Evil, there are sales on both Resident Evil VII and Resident Evil Village. Both feature some instant-classic Resident Evil moments and characters, but we can think of far worse ways to spend All Hallow's Eve this year than running away from Lady Dimitrescu and her bloodthirsty daughters. Separately, Resident Evil VII is 67% off, and Resident Evil Village is 33% off. There are also discounts on the various bundles that include both games.
We're as excited as anyone to dive into the dank roguelike depths of Darkest Dungeon II now that it's hit early access, but if you want to find out how the dismal journey began, you can snap up the original Darkest Dungeon on Steam for 80% off the usual price during the Halloween sale. The holidays can be a stressful time, so let your intrepid party of doomed characters shoulder some of the load.
It's rare to see a legitimately good 1440p 144Hz monitor for less than $250, but right now ViewSonic's VX2758-2KP-MHD is on sale at Newegg for $220 - a stunning $110 (33%) reduction from its original price of $330.
This 'Shell Shocker' sale ends in just a few hours, so do pick this up if you're in the market for a high-end gaming monitor at bargain basement prices!
One of our former best gaming SSD picks, the WD Blue SN550, is down to just £140 on Amazon for a massive 2TB model. That's a historic low price by around £15 and a good £40 what it cost just a few weeks ago, making this a very good time to pick up a high performance NVMe SSD on the cheap.
In the beginning, developer CD Projekt Red had a vision for Cyberpunk 2077's post-launch content plans. Free DLC will fill the gaps between Witcher-like expansions, along with regular updates. A lot of that got thrown out the window when Cyberpunk 2077 launched, and and there was a scramble just to fix the game — seen by many as a buggy mess. The developer has promised more fixes and content this year, but apparently something changed. CD Projekt Red has apparently, and silently, delayed free DLC and update plans for Cyberpunk 2077 until 2022. Yesterday, the company quietly updated the Cyberpunk 2077 roadmap. As reported by PCGamesN, the original roadmap noted that the content and updates were heading to the game this year. Naturally, the outlet had to use the Wayback Machine showing how it looked last week. Today, however, "updates, improvements, and free DLCs" are now marked as coming in 2022. PCGamesN does note that CD Projekt Red shifted its agenda to bri...
