The UK's premier gaming show, EGX, returns to the real world after being forced offline back in 2020 thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic. For 2021, the event will manifest in the physical realm in London's ExCel, taking place from October 7 through until October 10.
The event is going to be jam-packed: from panels exploring the art and inspiration behind Sable to various real-life shows from Eurogamer, Dicebreaker, RPS and your favourite game developers, there's plenty to sink your teeth into over the course of the four-day event. You can check out the full schedule here.
Also, if you've yet to try a PS5 in real life yet, you will be able to get your hands on the machine – albeit temporarily – at the show, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S units available in the hands-on Console Corner & Over 18's Area. Deathloop will be available to play on PlayStation 5 and Aliens: Fireteam Elite, Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania and more can be demoed on Xbox Series X.
With the start of a brand-new game cycle comes a brand-new cohort of FIFA 22 wonderkids ready to take charge of world football. One of the most rewarding parts of FIFA Career Mode is uncovering hidden gems and nurturing their potential until you have a team full of superstars to dominate domestically and internationally.
Despite improvements in sports science, football is still a young person's game. Ex-pros often describe the moment they started to find the next generation's talent 'frightening' as the moment they knew they had to retire, and the key to long-term success in FIFA 22 is knowing when to swap out your most-reliable performers to train their successor.
As the kings Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo enter the twilight of their career, we're in an interesting position where some of the hottest prospects looking to take on their crown are still very young.
It's been over a year now since we saw Epic Games Store's first – fairly rudimentary – implementation of achievements. Back in July 2020, Ark: Survival Evolved acted as something of a beta for the feature on Epic's launcher, testing the waters and trialling trophies for all players. Now, a wider rollout is set to take place next week.
It's going to be a process that ramps up little by little, it seems. As per a post on the Epic site, "Rocket League, Hades, Pillars of Eternity, Humankind, Zombie Army 4, and Defense Grid, and more" will get achievements first, where you'll be able to "start racking up XP" as you unlock awards.
Similarly to the way things work over on PlayStation, awards will be categorised into Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum – the latter being the most valuable. Here's how much XP you'll get per unlocking each award on EGS:
Super Power Training Simulator is a Roblox game by The State of Mind in which you train your character to become superhuman! Nintendo has published yet another commercial for Metroid Dread, and things are getting real in this one.
This latest 50-second spot shows off gameplay, the new Switch OLED (which also launches alongside the game this Friday) and some CGI shots of the terrifying EMMI invading a poor woman's lounge. Nothing says 'Dread' like having a DNA-extracting machine creeping around behind your sofa – it's legitimately spooky.
"It's your duty to destroy the clothing of these cursed damsels".
Look, as much as we hate to admit it, we ended up rather liking Waifu Uncovered. Yes, it was largely puerile and immature, but the shmup mechanics sitting beneath the smut were actually quite solid – so much so that we awarded it a respectable 7/10 when we reviewed it last year.
If you're also a fan, then you'll be pleased to learn that developer One-Hand-Free Studios has teamed up with Eastasiasoft to create a sequel entitled Waifu Discovered 2: Medieval Fantasy – and it's coming to Switch on October 14th.
You may remember that back in September 2020 we ran the first Nintendo Life Indie Spotlight, a showcase that highlighted dozens of indie games coming to Switch. Well, it's been a little over a year and we're excited to announce that the second Nintendo Life Indie Spotlight is almost here. Hurrah!
The Nintendo Life Indie Spotlight (Oct 2021 Edition) kicks off on today (4th October) at 12pm PST / 3pm EST / 8pm BST / 9pm CEST / 5am AEST (Tue 5th) and will be streamed via the Nintendo Life YouTube channel. We'll have a blog up on the site too, of course.
It has to be said that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has had an extraordinary run. Masahiro Sakurai and his team have overseen an ongoing and hugely hyped project to expand upon the launch roster, through the Fighters Passes, with the second volume's sixth and final character confirmed to be the end of the road.
As you undoubtedly know, this is being revealed tomorrow (5th October) at 7am Pacific / 10am Eastern / 3pm UK / 4pm CEST in a special broadcast that will last around 40 minutes.
PlayStation Now's October lineup is so massive, you may struggle to utter their names aloud in a single breath. But let's try: The Last of Us Part II. Fallout 76, Desperados III. Amnesia: Collection, Final Fantasy VIII Remastered, Yet Another Zombie Defense, Victor Vran: Overkill Edition. *Phew*. These seven titles will all launch tomorrow, Tuesday […]

I don't know what to say so I'll just start with the facts. Nintendo, through its France office, tweeted an image over the weekend of Metal Gear's Snake looking at Samus Aran from Metroid's ass. A couple hours later it then deleted the tweet. Now we are left to pick up the pieces.
After being pretty firm that he wasn't immediately interested in returning to Netflix's world-storming Squid Game, writer/director Hwang Dong-hyuk appears to have had a change of heart. Looking likely to have made the streaming service's biggest show ever can do that for you. Speaking to The Times, he explained that …
If you've been playing Amazon Games' New World since it launched earlier this week, you'll no doubt by now have levelled up some skills, crafted yourself some better armour, and happily worked your way through some of the opening quests as you got your bearings around Aeternum. But there is so much more out there waiting for you.
You can, of course, continue on your journey alone, uncovering the secrets of the Ancients and taking down the Lost and Corrupted that get in your way. But if you really want to make your mark on Aeternum, then you might consider joining a faction and entering the world of PvP.
Fighting other players is a whole different kettle of fish to fighting the shambling reanimated corpses of sailors, of course. So here are a few tips to get you started on your PvP journey in New World.
Steam's hardware survey for September 2021 has decidedly put to rest any notion of Intel making a comeback with its Tiger Lake processors, as AMD sits triumphantly with an all-time personal best in terms of market share. Team red processors now makeup 30.15% of all Windows gaming PCs running Valve's storefront, team blue constituting an additional 69.83%.
While this may not sound all-too-impressive at first, there are several important factors to consider with these figures that reveal AMD's position as one of continually growing strength.
While Steam doesn't provide details on specific processor models like it does graphics cards, it's reasonable to assume that AMD's growth of 2.84% is in large part due to the performance and value offered by its Ryzen processors. In their search for the best gaming CPUs, consumers are trending towards AMD even when presented with the option of Intel's 11th generation processors, which partly contributed to a period of decline in AMD's market share from May to August.
There are many ways you can play strategy games, but playing a game of Civilization V, with twelve factions, and a single person playing all twelve in order to direct the course of history for that game, is certainly a new one. It's not one I've heard about often, at least.
But hey, since Firaxis isn't announcing Civilization 7 any time soon, the Civ player base might as well find new ways to enjoy the games they have. User MartinChatski on the Civ subreddit has been sharing one especially galaxy-brained way they like to enjoy Civilization V using hotseat multiplayer. "I've played multiple really long hot seats games against myself from the Ancient to the Information Era where I built the world essentially from scratch!," they explain.
Hotseat is traditionally a way that people on the same machine can play games against each other, with play formally shifting from person to person - since the advent of the internet, it's not a mode of high importance. But for MartinChatski, it's a way to keep in control of a game that can often be highly unpredictable.
The line between console and PC is forever blurring, especially when it comes to hardware similarities like NVMe gaming SSD storage. Yet, while they're all designed for gaming, consoles typically lack the utilities and functionality available to gaming PC users. Now, thanks to Microsoft's latest Edge for Xbox update, the browser has keyboard and mouse support, as well as access to desktop sites, web apps, and even Google Stadia.
Included in Microsoft's September Xbox Update, the new, Chromium-based web browser feels like an uncanny desktop experience. Not only does it let you navigate the web with a gaming mouse and keyboard setup, but you can now use sites like Discord and YouTube, just like you would on a PC. The browser even works with apps like Google Docs, which means in theory, you could use your Xbox for both work and play.
While the new Edge browser makes the Xbox experience feel like a PC, there are some caveats to consider. For starters, while cloud services like Stadia are compatible with Edge, Nvidia's GeForce Now is currently unsupported. It's also worth noting that you won't be able to play games with a mouse and keyboard through Stadia. So, if you're considering using an Xbox at your desk, you'll need to keep a controller handy for gaming.
Trying to find New World briar branches? The magical island of Aeternum is home to unusual monsters and strange inhabitants. Some of these inhabitants give out quests asking for very specific items; in this case we need to find briar branches. If you aren't careful, you may spend most of your time wandering aimlessly as some resources can only be found in specific locations. Once you know where to look, you'll be swimming in briar branches.
Jumping into a new MMO for the first time is always exciting, though things can start to feel overwhelming as there are a lot of mechanics to take in. Be sure to read our New World beginner's guide which provides helpful advice for the early stages of the game. If you're planning on journeying through New World with friends, you should check out our guide beforehand to ensure you're able to pair up from the very beginning.
The briar plants drop numerous items, including briar branches, thorny vines, buds, and firefly bait. Let's not beat around the briar bush - here's where to find briar branches in New World.
What must be one of its most requested features of all time is finally coming to the Epic Games Store, and soon. Epic Games has just announced that the rollout of the platform's brand-new Achievements system, and developer tools that'll let studios activate them "quickly and easily", is starting next week.
"Starting next week, you can begin collecting XP by earning Epic Achievements in select games," the company announces in a post on its site. The Epic spin on Achievements breaks them down into four tiers which are set based on their XP value, with the top tier - Platinum - being awarded to payers who rack up 1,000 XP in a game. The tiers are broken down into the following, along with the "amount of additional XP you get for the Achievement": Bronze (5-45 XP), Silver (50-95 XP), Gold (100-200 XP), and Platinum (250 XP).
The games that support Epic Achievements get a new page as of this rollout which lets you track and share the progress you're making in hitting the goals. Additionally, both the Achievements and your progress for each game will now display in your games library on the platform.
Want to know everything about fishing in New World? Fishing is one of many different trade skills in New World, and catching rare fish takes a lot of work. Sometimes a quest asks for you to catch certain types of fish. Of course, you could just buy them from the auction house, but as the famous saying goes - If you give a man a fish you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.
Teaching your character to fish opens up new possibilities, but it's more complicated than just casting a line and reeling in fish. The quality of your equipment makes rarer fish appear more frequently, and the types of bait you can attach to your fishing pole work differently depending on whether you fish near the sea, or from riverbanks and lakes.
So here is everything you need to know about fishing in New World, from how to craft better fishing poles, what each fishing pole perk does, how to get bait, and where to find fishing hotspots.
Wondering what the next Genshin Impact banner is? Genshin Impact banners adhere to a pretty regular schedule. Each update arrives with a new banner that lasts around three weeks, and after it expires, it's followed by a second banner which also lasts roughly three weeks, at which point it's update time once again.
This means even though we hear rumours of new Genshin Impact characters arriving in forthcoming updates, we won't know their exact release date until we know which banner they will be a part of, and whether it'll be the first or second banner in the update. Occasionally, banners don't stick to this schedule - most notably, update 1.3 had three two-week banners, so that Hu Tao's banner didn't cross over with the Chinese New Year.
Typically, each limited character banner - or Event Wish - contains a five-star character, and three four-star characters. There's also a Weapon banner - Epitome Invocation - which runs alongside each character banner, and features different weapons each time. Here's everything you need to know about the current and upcoming Genshin Impact banners.
Looking for the Genshin Impact 2.2 release date? Since the Inazuma region was introduced to Mihoyo's charming anime game, players have had plenty to do on the island, meeting all manner of new Genshin Impact characters, learning about the Raiden Shogun and the Inazuma Bafuku who rule the island, and unlocking the Traveler's Electro abilities. Now in the 2.2 update, players can finally visit Tsurumi Island, a mysterious foggy island which holds new treasure chests and new monsters to fight.
The 2.1 update is currently live, which means that Baal and Kujou Sara are playable characters - if you were lucky enough to pull them, of course - along with Kokomi, who arrived on the second banner of the update.
The recent Genshin Impact 2.2 livestream revealed many more details coming to the next update including new weapons, hangout events, and what we can expect from the next Genshin Impact banner. Here's everything we know about the next Genshin Impact patch.
Looking for the Genshin Impact Thoma release date? Although Thoma isn't a playable character at the moment, he is an NPC in the nation of Inazuma, and was introduced in the 2.0 update as the chief retainer of the Kamisato Clan.
According to Mihoyo, "He's a rather special character. He has blond hair, different from most other Inazuma characters and his identity is naturally a bit of a mystery of its own. In terms of his personality, he's very observant of people — a rather mature companion. Thoma is currently the chief retainer of the Kamisato Clan and has a certain level of association with the Kamisato siblings."
His official title, revealed in a tweet from Genshin Impact, is 'Kamisato Clan's Housekeeper'. Thoma is a four-star Pyro polearm user, and is arriving as one of the upcoming Genshin Impact banners as part of the 2.2 update, alongside a rerun of Hu Tao. Here's everything we know about Thoma's abilities and when we can expect to see his banner arrive in Genshin Impact.
Looking for the best New World weapons? Amazon's new MMO game eschews the usual class system and gives players the ability to wield any of the game's eleven weapons freely. As you use a weapon, you gain mastery points in it, which you use to unlock skills and buffs in either of the weapon's two talent trees. You can choose up to three weapon skills that become available to you when that weapon is equipped, and you have two weapon slots, which you can switch between easily during combat without messing around in menus.
Though you can switch weapons at any point, it pays to choose two to specialise in and invest points into - especially as the skills at the end of each weapon's talent trees are particularly powerful. Each weapon scales off a specific primary attribute, and some of them also scale off a second attribute. As you level and gain attribute points, it's important to assign points to suit your chosen loadout.
When deciding which weapons to pick, it's definitely beneficial if both your weapons scale with the same attributes, although there are ways to get around this - for example, amber gems convert a percentage of your weapon's damage to nature damage, which scales off Focus. This means if you want to build high Focus for your Life Staff, you can still benefit from that investment when it comes to dealing damage with your other weapon.
Looking for a New World beginner's guide and tips? The New World release date has finally arrived, so it's time to jump into the new MMO and get started with leveling up new characters.
If you've never played the beta, that puts you at a bit of a disadvantage when it comes to figuring out how to level up quickly and deciding which New World weapons are worth investing time into. For the most part, it's easy to learn as you go, but there are a few beginner tips that will improve your experience as you begin your questing in Aeternum. Bear in mind, however, that these tips are all based on closed beta gameplay.
Before you log in for the first time, there's one thing you should know; after finishing the tutorial, you will randomly spawn on one of four starting beaches in four different territories, and that's where you'll spend the first 12 or so levels. Therefore, if you're planning to play with friends, you run the risk of being separated from them at the start of the game - read our guide on how to play with friends in New World in order to avoid this. Now you're ready to jump in - here's everything you need to know.
Want to know where to find New World gems? When it comes to creating the best New World PvP builds or PvE builds, gems can boost your stats and make that build even stronger. For example, gems such as the carnelian are great for tank builds, while fire staff builds benefit significantly from an equipped ruby.
But finding them in the first place? That's the tricky bit. They don't turn up reliably - instead, New World gems occasionally appear as rare drops whenever you mine certain minerals in the world. Fortunately, there are ways to boost your chance to find gems, but without these luck-enhancing items, your search may well be fruitless. Thankfully, so long as you're prepared to go into expeditions, there is a different way to get New World gems.
This guide will explain where to find New World gems and what items you need to equip to increase your chances of finding them. We'll also go through how to refine gemstones and what each gem does when you equip them for your loadout.
Would you pay an extra 14-ish quid for a purely visual touch-up on a game you can already buy with ease? That's, as Katharine found in her Alan Wake Remastered review, the biggest problem facing Remedy and D3T's restoration project. It makes a lot of sense for current-gen consoles, which for various reasons might not have always had access to the torch-and-shoot original, but of course us PC lot could well have been playing it yesterday.
Upcoming open-world RPG Dread Delusion is, if nothing else, a hell of a mood. Soon after starting the demo that's now available in the Steam Next Fest, I found myself just chilling with the soundtrack and watching the hot pink sun crawl across the sky, fed by tendrils swirling into it and briefly occluded by blood-red clouds. A great vibe. Like a small Morrowind, but in the sort of Hellsville where the local tavern is adorned with the giant skull of a slain god who collapsed upon it.
Where can you find Petalcaps in New World? Petalcaps are a useful resource in New World, since they're a key component to crafting many of the game's potions. It can be overwhelming looking for resources on Aeternum, simply because there's just so much flora and fauna knocking about (and so many other players looking for the same things). Read on for everything you need to know about where Fronded Petalcaps spawn so that you can narrow your search.
Fronded Petalcaps have a few things going for them in the noticeability department. They are quite large, are a more luminous shade of green than most of the other plants around them, and overall look quite pleasingly like giant artichokes.
The Petalcap is native to the Windsward region of Aeternum, which is a conveniently central location from the very early stages of the game, since it's right in the middle of all four starting zones. Within Windsward, Fronded Petalcaps are fairly common, sprouting up in any area that could be described as remotely verdant, whether it's an open field or a more enclosed forested area. Basically, unless you're in a dry or coastal part of the region, there's likely to be some Fronded Petalcaps relatively close by.

Only a few days ago Proton Experimental saw an update to pull in NVIDIA DLSS support for DirectX 12 and as of today's update this has expanded to DirectX 11 titles too.
It's still currently disabled by default with you needing to make a small adjustment to turn it on. This can be added to individual games by setting PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 %command% in the launch options. Or you can try PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 %command% with "dxgi.nvapiHack = False" in a DXVK config file.
There's also an update to newer DXVK that includes the latest development work and you should find that Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is now playable with it. The Proton changelog can be found here.
Need to know how to actually use Proton Experimental? Here's a simple HOWTO (as it's not complicated!). Make sure it's installed by searching for it in your Steam Library, then select it from the Compatibility menu in the Properties section of a game. See our quick video below:
