PCGamesN Friday, September 6, 2024 1:00 PM I think most of us can agree that Assassin's Creed Black Flag is the best one - when videogames encourage exploration, self expression, and mischief, playing as a pirate is a natural formal fit. In between Civilization games and way back in the '90s, Firaxis legend Sid Meier pioneered the seditionist sea-faring genre with the suitably named Pirates! Though Meier himself would remake the game in 2004, its combination of strategy, sword-based combat, plundering, politics, and romance has slipped partially into obscurity. But one budding studio wants to bring the classic pirate CRPG back. Led by a former Age of Empires and MechWarrior developer, and inspired by the deckbuilding combat of Slay The Spire, PCGamesN can exclusively reveal the new and upcoming Sea of Legends. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, September 6, 2024 1:36 PM After watching the announcement trailer for Whispers of the Eyeless, I have one request: please, do not have that voiceover in the full game. Beyond that, colour me fairly enthused. |

CEO Yoshimi Yasuda also offered insights into that port on social media, discussing its resolution, frame rate, and what people can expect from the a post-launch patch.
In the Yasuda statement, he noted that Lollipop Chainsaw RePop runs at 30fps on the Switch and has a 1080p FHD resolution. He compared this to the original game, which ran at 720p HD and 30fps. He did note that the Switch version has optimized lighting, but no "screen space reflections." As for the post-launch patch, it will add chainsaw marks after Juliet attacks places, as those marks aren't in at launch.
Here's that notice from Yoshimi Yasuda's X account:
As for the Lollipop Chainsaw RePop Switch gameplay footage, there are some minor spoilers for folks who aren't familiar with the game. Hosoi said that it was decided early in development that Yumia's color scheme would focus heavily on black and white. However, the details of her design weren't detailed until later. In contrast, Isla von Duerer's design was decided early on.
Hosoi added that when they put Isla and Yumia, whose design was still not finalized, side by side, Isla looked more like the typical Atelier protagonist. The developers then had about 30 to 40 rounds of fine tuning to make Yumia feel more like the main character and to try and make her appeal as global as possible. They settled on emphasizing her coolness as a strong and independent woman, as well as her use of acrobatic footwork.
Hosoi also talked about some of the supporting cast of Atelier Yumia. In regards to Viktor, the producer said that he is the type of man of justice that hadn't seen in the Atelier series until now. Hosoi compared him to Marvel's Captain America. Meanwhile, Isla is Viktor's younger sister. She has a friendly personality and gets along well with her brother. As mentioned before, her design is closer to previous Atelier protagonists.
Nina is a mysterious woman, and the developers deliberately designed her to be straightforward and fit the assassin archetype. Rutger is another character whose design is new to the Atelier series. Rutger has a noteworthy past, but he was designed as to not give it away immediately. The world of Atelier Yumia has various demihuman races, and Lenja belongs to the Welleks.
The Atelier Yumia official website offers character profiles for the main party members, and you can take a look at their designs here:
Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land will come out worldwide on March 21, 2025 for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam.

HoYoVerse shared a new Honkai: Star Rail MiHoYo Anime short that shows how both Feixiao and Jing Yuan start their day. Most of it involves a split-screen perspective directly comparing their morning, before shifting to focus more on her.
The Honkai: Star Rail anime short is set during the Wardance event on the Xianzhou Luofu. Things begin with both characters' alarms going off at 7am. From there, we see both have a different approach to getting started. Jing Yuan's day is more leisurely, with him mainly getting going at 7am, while Feixiao is more active and exercising. Throughout the segment, there are additional clips showing how things align, with both getting a notification about a 10am meeting with Huaiyan and additional glimpses at the clock showing what happens at 8:30am.
Here is the full "Taking It Easy" Honkai: Star Rail MiHoYo Anime short. Only Japanese voice acting is available, but turning closed captions makes English subtitles available.
Feixiao is the first new 5-star debuting in the 2.5 update. She's a Hunt character, which means her attacks focus on a single opponent. She's also a Wind element type unit.
Honkai: Star Rail is available for the PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and the Feixiao banner will launch alongside 2.5 on September 10, 2024.

After literal decades, the original Fate/stay night is available on modern consoles in English, and it serves as a fantastic introduction to the grand (but not that complicated) world of Fate. Outside of very minor technical issues that were more than likely my own fault rather than the game's, it's a smooth and gripping experience for both veterans and novices of the series.
The overall premise of Fate/stay night is one that even non-fans should be familiar with at this point, considering how many adaptations and spin-offs there are. It follows Shirou Emiya, a deceptively ordinary high school student who finds himself wrapped up in the Holy Grail War. The Holy Grail War is a war between mages, fought by summoning historical or mythological heroes as Servants in order to obtain the titular Holy Grail. As Saber's Master, Shirou somewhat reluctantly joins the war in order to prevent tragedies that may occur as a result of it.
There are three routes: Fate, Unlimited Blade Works, and Heaven's Feel. Each route feels wildly different in terms of themes, main characters, and storyline, yet the game still meshes together in a cohesive manner. As for the actual gameplay, it's similar to previous Type-Moon titles like Witch on the Holy Night and Tsukihime where you mostly make decisions at key junctures in the plot. Outside of those occasional key inputs, you can sit back and enjoy the show. I personally enjoyed the Unlimited Blade Works route a bit more than the other two, but they're all very interesting stories with their own unique motifs and themes.
It's actually very interesting reading Fate/stay night so soon after the Tsukihime remake because I can see how Nasu improved as a writer. However, I will also note that it can be hard to compare since as the introduction to the Fate franchise, Fate/stay night naturally had to be a bit heavy on the exposition. Things that we Fate fans think are common knowledge—True Name, Holy Grail War, Bounded Field, et cetera—were probably really confusing back when the game first came out.
Nonetheless, the narrative can feel a bit slow at times due to Nasu's focus on either explaining the magic system or delving really deep into internal monologue. The second thing isn't bad, since it provides insight on characters in a way that animated adaptations could never. Speaking of the narrative, I realized how much of my disinterest in the Fate route was from the Studio DEEN anime. Sure, ufotable has its problems when it comes to adapting Fate works but I still hope it decides to make a new anime for the Fate route one day.
I played the game after the issues with the English version were patched out. So I didn't get the authentic experience of playing a Japanese visual novel. Though I did run into some performance issues, I'm pretty sure they're avoidable if you don't do what I did (thus it won't affect the score). For one thing, playing the game on a second monitor doesn't work in fullscreen. It keeps minimizing. I played Ace Attorney Investigations on a second monitor in fullscreen and it ran fine, so this is unique to Fate/stay night. Even windowed, issues cropped up. Letters would be missing or entire lines would run into each other. I know this is a problem with the monitor rather than the game because if I took a screenshot or dragged the window to my main screen, it looked fine. Moral of the story? Fate doesn't like playing second fiddle.
Fate/stay night is a great read and introduction to the Fate franchise, and all three routes maintain the same quality in terms of the plot and themes. Personally, I don't think any route was bad. It just falls to personal preference. Compared to Type-Moon's newer games or stories, yes, it can be overly wordy. And yes, it looks dated in both Takeuchi's art style and in the Powerpoint-like transitions. I honestly found it charming though, and it works in the context of such a classic game. So rejoice, Fate fans. Our wish has finally come true.
Fate/stay night Remastered is readily available on the Nintendo Switch and Windows PC.

NPC Studio shared a summary of stats for all Fields of Mistria early access players between August 5, 2024 and September 5, 2024, and it confirmed that the number of downloads passed 250,000 and those who did pick it up played for 4,134,038 hours. The announcement also included a number of details going over what everyone did in spring of their first year in the game. Most notably, the insights suggest March is a popular Fields of Mistria character, based on number of gifts given to him.
Given the age of the game and the time going into it, NPC Studio only offered a brief summary of possible Spring Year 1 stats. Most interesting is the section going over gifts given to possible love interests. While it noted that 3,753,747 gifts total had been given in the first month Fields of Mistria was available, 910,916 of those went to March. March is the romanceable blacksmith who tends to like different types of core.
Here are the full Fields of Mistria stats going over downloads, playtime, and stats like gifts given, crops harvested, bugs caught, fish caught, and money earned.
NPC Studio often uses the game's social media account to share updates on the game and insights into it that we might be unaware of. For example, it shared a gif going over how to assign a repeated tool use button in its controls menu. The first roadmap for patches appeared there as well. The next major update will appear at the end of 2024 and include new customization options, dungeon features, and heart events with love interests.
Fields of Mistria is in early access on Steam, and it is Steam Deck compatible. The full game is expected to release in 2025.

Bandai Namco used the latest Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero trailer to tease more characters, with this time the focus being on ones from the Majin Buu Saga. As such, five of the nine new fighters in the spotlight are forms of Buu.
Here's the full list of all Majin Buu Saga characters that will appear in Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero. Each one appears briefly in the latest video. Some of them were characters we already knew about, as both Super Buu and Ultimate Gohan appeared in the gamescom 2024 trailer.
Given the point that we are at in terms of reveals, many of the characters that showed up in the video were already fighters we knew would appear in the game.
And here's that full trailer:
As usual, things ended with Bandai Namco showing more of the filled-out character select screen. We are now down to only 25 characters remaining. Going by the current rate of reveals, that could mean an additional three or four trailers ahead of the game's launch.
Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero will appear on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC on October 11, 2024.

Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida said that following Final Fantasy XIV player character models and faces feedback, various avatar fixes will come in the 7.1 patch. He shared a list of major, recurring issues related to lips, faces, mouths, eyes, eyelashes, jawlines, and smiles.
The first thing Yoshida discussed was how polygon and mapping affected certain Final Fantasy XIV player character faces, which he hopes to have fixed for avatars in 7.1. Some of the biggest changes will involve lip colors being the way they are intended to be, a more noticeable philtrum, that the corners of mouths will look more natural, eye shadows and bags will look more uniform and consistent, and other issues with polygons will be rectified. He also noted that there's been some progress already, citing differences between 6.58 and 7.0.
Yoshida also paid quite a bit of attention to eyelashes in the update. He cited that the graphics update might have made them face in odd ways, so that will eventually be adjusted. However, while that improvement might not come until after 7.1, some other ones involving them looking too thin or dark will be handled in the 7.1 patch.
There are also some other Final Fantasy XIV player characters face and model issues that will be fixed for avatars after 7.1 since Yoshida described them as being intensive. The jawlines are one issue, which involve polygons and rigs, and will be worked on to look more like the 6.58 ones. The same goes for smiling issues. The Auri horns will be fixed in 7.2, as will face paint appearing improperly on models.
Finally, Yoshida shared a list of other issues that the team is aware of and will fix. Here are the other issues:
Final Fantasy XIV is available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC, and the 7.1 patch will be further discussed at the TGS 2024 Letter from the Producer Live.
