In a lot of ways, 2024 was a worse year for the video game industry than 2023. And that's really depressing to think about considering how bad 2023 was for game developers and the media covering the industry. Still, even a shitty year can have nice moments and wonderful surprises.

This new Asus ROG Strix gaming laptop has enough RGB to make your desk glow

If you like your gaming gear to look like it came straight from the neon glow of the Las Vegas strip, then you'll love this new Asus ROG Strix gaming laptop that the company has just teased. It has a ring of bright RGB lighting that goes all round the edge and, fittingly, the new machine, which looks like it's probably the new Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 2025, is scheduled to be launched in Vegas at CES 2025 in January 2025.

Asus is no stranger to the world of RGB lighting, as we found in our Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 review, which bathes the surface area in front of the machine in the lighting color of your choice. This new design from Asus, however, shows a complete circuit of lighting surrounding the perimeter of the laptop's underside. Meanwhile, a recent leak also suggests that the ROG Strix Scar 18 2025 specs will feature a new Nvidia GeForce RTX 5000 laptop GPU, specifically the RTX 5080 model, although other GPUs are likely to be available too.

Fractured Alliance feels like a new Command and Conquer, inspired by Red Alert 2

Though it's regarded as one of the all-time great strategy games, what defines Command and Conquer is its simplicity. The easy drag-and-click mechanics of Westwood's classic mean that anyone can feel like a master general in seconds - there are tiers, and the further you fight through the Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert campaigns, the more sophisticated your tactics have to become, but compared to some of its contemporaneous rivals like Total Alliance and StarCraft, old-school C & C has a gratifyingly low barrier to entry. Upcoming RTS Fractured Alliance aims to capture that spirit. An unofficial, spiritual successor to Command and Conquer, its newly revealed skirmish map is also a direct nod (no pun intended) to Red Alert 2.

All Marvel Rivals codes and how to redeem - December 2024

December 24, 2024: We checked for the latest Marvel Rivals codes.

Marvel Rivals is a hit hero shooter featuring a cast of iconic heroes and villains, from Iron Man and Captain America to slightly more obscure characters like Cloak and Dagger. It's most regularly compared to Blizzard's Overwatch thanks to its team-focused tactics and its cast's unique abilities.

Like many free multiplayer games these days, Marvel Rivals includes a code redemption system that lets you unlock freebies such as skins. We fully expect developer NetEase will continue to drop more codes post-launch, and given they only stay active for a set amount of time, we felt it'd be helpful to compile the lot, let you know what they get you, and flag when they're set to become inactive.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 5000 specs all

We're hopefully only a few weeks away from the grand unveiling of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5000 lineup at CES in January now, but the latest rumor about the new Blackwell gaming GPU lineup is that the specs are very similar to those of the current RTX 4000 series. The one exception, according to a tech leaker who claims to have seen the specs, is the flagship RTX 5090.

The latter certainly looks set to be a formidable GPU from what we've seen of the RTX 5090 specs so far. If current rumors are to be believed, the new top-end Nvidia graphics card will come equipped with a massive 32GB of GDDR7 VRAM that's attached to a super-wide 512-bit memory interface, while the GPU itself comes equipped with up to 21,760 CUDA cores. That's a decent upgrade over the current RTX 4090, but the rest of the Blackwell lineup is apparently looking less inspiring.

Final Fantasy VII FFVII Banora White Juice drink recipe shared on 2024 Christmas Eve

Square Enix shared Final Fantasy VII drink recipes via its Japanese FFVII Remake series X account on December 24, 2024, just ahead of Christmas day. People can use these recipes to replicate the drinks that are originally made in Square Enix's cafes across Japan.

The company shared two drink recipes in the same tweet. The first one is the Mako's Eye Drink that is based on the key substance in FFVII, which Square Enix had already published before during the 2023 Christmas Eve tweet. The second entry, Banora White Juice, was not included in last year's tweet.

The full ingredient list for the newer Banora White Juice is as follows:

  • An adequate amount of ice blocks
  • 150 ml of apple juice
  • 20 ml of Butterfly Pea tea
  • 5 ml of Purple Haze syrup
  • An adequate amount of liquid lemon
  • An adequate amount of mint leaves

As a side note, Square Enix added a fine print cautioning that the composition of Butterfly Pea tea will make the Banora White Juice not suitable to drink for those who are pregnant or having a period.

The Japanese official tweet containing the drink recipe videos is also available to view right below:

https://twitter.com/ffviir_cloud/status/1871322393123402046?s=61

The above two drinks take inspiration from Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII sub-series. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second entry in the Final Fantasy VII remake project, is readily available worldwide on PlayStation 5. Square Enix will port the title to PC on January 23, 2025.

Square Enix announced the next Play Arts Shin figure, and it will be Noctis Lucis Caelum from Final Fantasy XV, marking the second FFXV figure reveal for the character in 2024. The social media reveal consisted of a single photo and a tease suggesting what we can expect from him.

The Noctis figure will feature him with his younger look. We also know that he'll come with his Engine Blade as an accessory. There's no release window yet.

Here's the official post showing he's on the way:

https://twitter.com/SQEX_MD_GOODS/status/1871118560673800694

Square Enix already revealed the first Play Arts Shin figure back in November 2024. It teased that the FFVII Rebirth version of Vincent Valentine would be the initial character to lead the lineup. That was fully revealed in December 2024 and assigned a November 2025 launch window.

Based on what we know about the Vincent Play Arts Shin figure, we can determine some possible details about the FFXV Noctis one. The first one costs 23,100 yen  in Japan and $199.99 worldwide. Square Enix also opened pre-orders in both storefronts near simultaneously, guaranteeing we'll see characters in this collection globally. Fire Emblem Three Houses post time skip Edelgard figure

Intelligent Systems has revealed that it will release a new figure modeled after the post-timeskip version of Edelgard von Hresvelg from Fire Emblem: Three Houses. It is working with Good Smile Company to release the figure worldwide. The pre-order window has also opened for the figure, which will cost ¥31,680 / $210.99.

This static figure will depict Edelgard's appearance at the reunion battle on the Gronder Field five years after the academy period. Edelgard, who has become the Emperor of Adrestia, will also be shown with her unique axe Aymr.

The figure will have a scale of 1/7. The total height will be approximately 21 cm (8.27 in) when measured up to Edelgard's head, or 27 cm (10.63 in) when one measures all the way up to the tip of the Aymr axe.

Here are some of the sample images for the upcoming Edelgard figure, taken from multiple angles:

Edelgard will join the short list of Fire Emblem series characters who have had figures designed by Intelligent Systems, the same development studio behind the strategy RPG entries. Prior recent examples included Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd from the same Three Houses, the female Alear from Fire Emblem Engage, and the female Corrin from Fire Emblem Fates.

Good Smile Company will close the pre-order period for the 1/7 scale figure of the post-timeskip Edelgard von Hresvelg from Fire Emblem: Three Houses on February 26, 2025. Intelligent Systems will ship the finished figures internationally from Japan in January 2026 and North America from the U.S. in Q2 2026.
