Kotaku Sunday, June 9, 2024 5:30 PM Fear The Spotlight is vibey as hell from the outset, like plunging into a wormhole that sends you straight onto the set of the '90s cult horror classic The Craft. Kotaku Sunday, June 9, 2024 3:40 PM Today's Xbox Games Showcase was a nice, healthy dose of what's on the horizon for Team Green (and maybe a few other platforms?). There's no shame in seeking a little helping hand, as the fastest cleared time in the World's First race was just shy of 19 hours due to the complexity of the mechanics. Destiny 2 has long been famed for its raid races, which sees fireteams of six gather together to try to complete the raid on "day one" which recently became two days to encourage Guardians to stay healthy, get rest, and not stick to their desks for 24 hours straight. PCGamesN Sunday, June 9, 2024 1:19 PM One of my favorite things about Fallout New Vegas, arguably the most open and freeform entry in the Bethesda and Obsidian RPG series, is the fact you play as somebody other than a Vault survivor. It seems minor, but as a character who has spent their life above ground rather than below it, the world of FNV feels different and more compelling. The wait for Fallout 5 may be long, but perhaps the most underrated game in the series, Fallout 76, is about to be transformed by an incredible new feature. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Sunday, June 9, 2024 6:30 PM The god of video games news is vengeful, for this weekend He has sent forth a flood of game announcements to wipe out any remaining game journalists from this earth. Come at me, God! What have you got? Ah. It's Ale Abbey, a management game about brewing beer in a monastery of medieval monks, and between making craft ales the priests get tipsy on their own supply. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Sunday, June 9, 2024 3:06 PM Microsoft and Blizzard have slapped a release date on Diablo 4's forthcoming content-o-season Vessel Of Hatred. It's out 8th October 2024, and sees you hooting and hollering down the road to the new region of Nahantu in search of Neyrelle, a character "who is both suffering the fate of her choice to imprison the Prime Evil Mephisto, and seeking a means to destroy him". In the process, you may choose to become "the apex predator of the jungle as the all-new Spiritborn class". Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Sunday, June 9, 2024 2:47 PM The rumours of a new Gears of War appearing at today's Xbox Games Showcase were accurate - well, mostly. The next Gears of War won't be a sequel like Gears of War 6, but instead looks to be a prequel to the entire series that returns to the very beginning of the bloody battle between humanity and the alien Locust. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Sunday, June 9, 2024 2:43 PM Microsoft have released a new trailer for South Of Midnight, a third-person action adventure from Compulsion Games, who created dystopian Britpop survival game We Happy Few. I thought We Happy Few had some wonderful ideas and presentation - it's sort of Fable by way of Clockwork Orange and Bioshock - but found its mixture of pill-popping satire and survival game mechanisms self-defeating. South Of Midnight seems no less vivid, but a lot more assured in its God Of War-style action... and it's perhaps a bit less intriguing, as a consequence. Still, don't just sit there reading my opinions. Watch the trailer. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Sunday, June 9, 2024 2:32 PM Indiana Jones And The Great Circle, Indy's upcoming FPS adventure game, has a new 'Official Showcase Reveal' trailer, officially showcasing and revealing basically nothing about the game except that it features some pretty and decently acted cutscenes, which we already knew from the previous reveal. It does have snow nazis in however, possibly the rarest flavour of Nazi after Cookies n' Cream and Original. You'll find the trailer below. Be careful: it's official. Also, it's mainly just one very long cutscene, so if you want to save that stuff for when the game's out, maybe don't bother. |

Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Sunday, June 9, 2024 2:12 PM Microsoft and Playground's genuinely long-awaited Fable reboot will launch in 2025, and they've released a new trailer which... seems... good? And is also quite informative about the moment-to-moment of the game. The video is framed as the memoir of a paunchy retired champion, Humphry, who once mentored a young heroine I presume will be the game's main character, though it's ambiguous. She could also be the villain. Then again, Fable is a series in which you can be the villain. Egad, such shenanigans! |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Sunday, June 9, 2024 2:07 PM I never played the original Perfect Dark, but the trailer for the reboot shown during this evening's Xbox Games Showcase instantly made it the most exciting game I've seen during not-E3. It's first-person, it's got stealth, it's got parkour, it's got hand-to-hand melee combat including slidekicks. It looks like a mashup of Mirror's Edge and something more immersive sim-y? What's not to like. |

Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Sunday, June 9, 2024 1:55 PM The Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake - aka Metal Gear Solid Delta - resurfaced during tonight's Xbox Games Showcase. We still don't have a release date, despite signs we might see the remake of the 2004 game this year, but we did get a pretty good look at a bunch of key moments from the original remade in the shiny Unreal Engine 5 do-over - including a look at The Boss and the familiar gravelly tones of Snake actor David Hayter. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Sunday, June 9, 2024 1:47 PM Microsoft have published the very first trailer for EA and BioWare's Dragon Age: The Veilguard, formerly known as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, at their summer Xbox Game Showcase. It accompanies the first details of this "immersive single player RPG" - pause for ecstatic applause from Anthem haters - "where you become the leader others believe in". Not miles from the premise of Dragon Age: Inquisition, then. That footage, tho? Not entirely Inquisitiony. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Sunday, June 9, 2024 1:38 PM We've known for a while that Starfield was getting its first expansion later this year, but tonight's Xbox Games Showcase gave us its first trailer. My main takeaway? That Bethesda are leaning into cosmic horror, as the trailer features landscapes that look like they're on the other side of an Oblivion gate than anything I saw during my time with Starfield. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Sunday, June 9, 2024 1:36 PM DOOM: The Dark Ages is the next Bethesda Doom game, following DOOM 2016 and Doom: Eternal. It takes the FPS series back to a more civilised medieval age, where men and demon solved their disputes with throwable chainsaw shields, massive dragons, and guns that grind skulls at silly speeds then fire out the bone chips. Feast your face on the trailer below. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Sunday, June 9, 2024 1:28 PM Those undead just keep on coming back from the grave as Microsoft screen a new trailer for State Of Decay 3, your latest helping of sorrowful yet bloodthirsty zombie-bopping survivalism. I reviewed State Of Decay the first and thought it was a cool scrappy underdog next to larger zombie-botherers such as Left 4 Dead or DayZ. State Of Decay 2, on the other hand, I found to be disappointing - the same game with more money behind it in a way that seemed to magnify its faults. The threequel? I have tempered expectations, but I do want it to be good. |

The cavalcade of June game showcases continued with the PC Gaming Show 2024 games, with the presentation hosted by Sean "Day9" Plott and Mica Burton. The showcase focused entirely on games available for the PC, though some are or will be available on other platforms too.
Some standouts include Southfield, a farming game that seems to be channeling a bit of the Totally Accurate series by adding wonky physics. We also saw a look at goofy, magical XCOM-like Tactical Breach Wizards and the anime-inspired rhythm adventure game UNBEATABLE. RTS fans were well served too, as both Stormgate and Battle Aces had sections devoted to gameplay features and even a new faction.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will make it a requirement for players to be always online, even in campaign mode, and all past bans will apply to the new game as well. This came up after the June 2024 Xbox Games Showcase reveal
In a page detailing the features of various editions of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Activision confirmed the always online requirement. According to the site, the game will make use of texture streaming. The studio claims this will allow them to provide high quality visuals while reducing storage space on player hard drives. This will include the Campaign mode, meaning even single player content will require a connection. Activision has confirmed that the Campaign mode can be played without the need for an online subscription on console.
In addition, Activision also confirmed that all permanent bans will be carried over to Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. This restriction will apply for any bans issued in all games released since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare from 2019. This will extend to Battle.net, as any banned player attempting to buy the game through the storefront will be unable to do so. Now that MultiVersus launched and we've had a chance to get comfortable, it's time to talk about the characters we like the best. The game has its issues, for sure. But there's also some fun to be had if you can deal with quirks like finding lives up for sale that is apparently a "bug." Let's talk about our mains.
Sadly, I found MultiVersus to be Very Bad and dropped it after about a day of playing around with the beta. However, if I must pick a character I had some enjoyment out of, it's easily Bugs Bunny. I've always been a Looney Tunes nerd since I was a kid and that trickster god of a rabbit is my favorite cartoon character of all time. And despite the problems I had with the game overall, I did feel he was represented well. He had all the Acme props you'd expect plus a sneaky burrow move which you could mess with other players with. If the relaunch improves the game, he would be a strong candidate for a personal main. — Leigh
I also didn't stick with MultiVersus, so my opinion may not be the best for those looking for a character to pick. I really liked Wonder Woman! She's always been one of my favorite DC heroes and she's easy enough to get. She's a Tank type fighter, so it meant I didn't have to worry about being defeated too quickly before I figured things out. Plus I really found her Sword of Ares and Amazon Shout attacks. — Jenni
MultiVersus is available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.

During the Xbox Game Showcase 2024, Microsoft revealed the new mainline game in the Gears series, Gears of War: E-Day. The game will be a prequel to the first game and is set 14 years prior to the beginning of the series.
The new series will bring back protagonist duo Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as they fight against the Locust Horde invasion during Emergence Day, in an origin story to the original trilogy. The reveal trailer showed no in-engine gameplay. Instead, it showed a CGI cutscene of a young Marcus Fenix fighting against a Locust Drone while being supported by Dom Santiago. The trailer also featured a piano cover of the iconic "Mad World" theme song.

Additionally, developers at The Coalition revealed that the announcement of this new origin story in the Gears series doesn't mean that this isn't the end of the storyline started in Gears 4 and Gears 5. Brand Director Nicole Fawcette said "We're not retreating from that storyline in any way. But in [this] moment, we had an opportunity to write our next step, and this one just felt too good to miss."
Gears of War: E-Day is currently in development for the Xbox Series X. There is no announced release date or window for the game yet.

Microsoft shared a new Fable trailer and a release window at the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase, four years after it was first announced at the same event. The game will now release in 2025, still on the previously announced PC and Xbox Series X platforms.
The trailer is narrated by Humphry, a retired hero of Fable's land of Albion. He mused about the nature of heroes and their defining choices, but more importantly talks of a young adventurer he brought into the guild that he came to fear. The trailer ended with someone announcing that same adventurer's ominous return. While it is unclear as to whether that adventurer in the trailer is meant to be a player stand-in, the description on the video stated that she "threatens Albion's very existence" suggesting she will be the antagonist instead.

The new Fable game was originally teased all the way back at the Xbox Games Showcase in July, 2020. Alongside the new trailer, the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase also revealed a release date for the upcoming expansion for Diablo IV, titled Vessel of Hatred.

Square Enix and Deck Nine announced Life is Strange: Double Exposure, a sequel to the original title with Max, at the June 2024 Xbox Games Showcase. It involves her solving another murder mystery and going between two timelines to do so on October 29, 2024 on the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC, with a Switch version also confirmed.
The first trailer for the game begins with Life is Strange returning protagonist Max saying she vowed to never use her powers again. However, after discovering her friend Safi's dead body, she decides to use it to try and save her. In so doing, her abilities allow her to head into an alternate timeline where Safi is dead, but her life is in danger. By investigating and using her abilities, she may be able to save Safi in one timeline, discover what's going on, and set things right in both.
Here's how the game looks so far:
It's notable that in this sequel, we only see Max. Chloe does not appear. She was the person Max was trying to save in the original Life is Strange. Chloe also was the star of the prequel Life is Strange: Before the Storm, which Deck Nine also developed.
Life is Strange: Double Exposure will come to the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC on October 29, 2024. There's no release window for the Switch version yet.

The long awaited fourth Dragon Age game, recently renamed The Veilguard, finally has a release date window. We can expect the game to release in Fall 2024, according to the announcement trailer at the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase.
The trailer gives us an overview of what look to be our future party members, including the return of Scoutmaster Harding from Inquisition. Joining her will be Neve, the magically adept detective, Lucanis the mage-hunting assassin, and the veil-jumping Bellara. The rather dapper looking Emmrich will provide reinforcements in the form of summoned skeletons, while Davrin looks to be a Dalish Gray Warden who hunts Darkspawn alongside a Gryphon-like companion. Taash the Qunari (Or possibly Vashoth?) will provide some muscle against the titular dragons, which Harding promises will appear. Interestingly, the trailer ends with the presumed player character stand-in dropping an iron chandelier on foes, potentially indicating a new focus on environmental combat. Most importantly, however, is the return of fan-favorite character Varric from Dragon Age 2, though he looks to be an advisor rather than a party member.

Veilguard was previously announced under the name Dragon Age: Dreadwolf back in 2022, with the game taking it's current name more recently. Also announced at the Xbox Showcase was Doom: The Dark Ages, featuring a more fantasy-styled adventure for the Doomslayer.
