Furry fantasy soulslike Kristala adds a second chapter and new ice magic

Of all the Dark Souls challengers we've seen over the years, Kristala has to be one of the most immediately appealing. It's gorgeous to look at, with vibrant environments and colorful fantasy foes that would feel right at home in the world of Elden Ring. It's got fast-paced combat, parries, and traversal reminiscent of Sekiro. But, most importantly, it's got cats - or cat people, at least - and gives you full customization control over your furry protagonist's look, clan, and abilities. Launched via early access in June, Kristala's second chapter has just arrived, and you can pick the game up cheaply to celebrate.

Ashes of Creation dev shows off anti-griefing tools as Alpha Two finally begins

It almost doesn't feel real, but Ashes of Creation Alpha Two is here at last. First announced in 2016 with a successful Kickstarter campaign, the new MMORPG is finally opening its doors to a wider audience as it begins an ongoing public test that is planned to run well into 2025. The bad news is that you'll have to pay if you want access, with keys costing an eye-watering $120. The good news is that you can take a look at it right now thanks to the latest developer update from Intrepid Studios.

Metaphor ReFantazio works by embracing and subverting fantasy tradition

Metaphor ReFantazio, described in summary, sounds like any number of traditional fantasy games. It stars a ragtag band of adventurers from disparate backgrounds, bound together in a quest to thwart a powerful villain. It takes place in a universe populated by goblins and dragons, human-like figures with horns jutting from the sides of their heads or wings folded next to their arms. There are kings and princes living in cobblestoned cities surrounded by stretches of verdant forests and sandy deserts. And yet, even while embracing so much of the fantasy genre, Metaphor is eager to subvert or complicate its trappings at nearly every turn.

Starfield 2 would have the same advantage Skyrim did, ex Bethesda dev says

It's been over a year since Starfield launched. In that time, Bethesda's spacefaring take on its RPG formula didn't quite make the impact the team was hoping for. Taking what made Skyrim and Fallout so engaging and spreading it across an entire galaxy inadvertently ruined the magic. The act of exploring Bethesda games is a core part of what makes them so alluring, and Starfield lost it. If the team makes Starfield 2, though, one former Bethesda designer says this opportunity should make for a much improved game.

Project Diablo 2's new season is the perfect dessert after D4 Vessel of Hatred

Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred has probably been the most fun I've had so far with Blizzard's newest RPG, a game I already enjoyed a lot. But at this point I've done just about everything, save for grinding out those last few paragon levels and looking for perfect rolls, and Path of Exile 2 still hasn't arrived. Fortunately, the team at Project Diablo 2 is here to help, with the launch of its tenth season for the revamped, modernized version of one of the best PC games of all time.

Hello reader who is also a reader, and welcome back to Booked For The Week - our regular Sunday chat with a selection of cool industry folks about books! Most of us know about the novel, the novella, and the rare novito, but did you know that Penguin briefly tried to market the 'big nov' - single sentences of much larger works, bizarrely serialised into hardbacks weighty enough to club the equally rare giga-seal? Some things are best left forgotten, but not Dragon Age! It's Dragon Age month, and here's Dragon Age veteran and good YouTuber, Mark Darrah! Cheers Mark! Mind if we have a nose at your bookshelf?

Dragon Age Veilguard Release Date

If there is one element of a BioWare game that the studio is known for, it is the characters. This is a trend in the Dragon Age series where the characters are your pals, party members, and even potential love interests. But when it comes to the best Dragon Age romance of all time in terms of the character, writing, and plot, these are our picks.

Siliconera Speaks Up: Best Dragon Age Romance of All Time

I don't know if he's the absolute "best," but I'm a sucker for Fenris in Dragon Age 2. I loved his storyline and the sense of trust you build up with him over the years. It takes time for that relationship to grow and you to reach a good place together. However, this is understandable given everything he's been through.

Also… I'm one of those people who genuinely enjoyed the Solas romance in Dragon Age: Inquisition. This was mainly because of how interesting it was narratively. When you considered your life as an elf and the insights you got into his personality as a result of it, it really ended up being fascinating. -- Jenni

Life as the Inquisitor is hectic. Even when you're not dealing with magical powerhouses or ancient evils, your companions are reminding you every waking moment about the end of the world. In Dragon Age: Inquisition, Josephine's romance helps you feel normal. Where other romances in Dragon Age are based on romantic tension or casual thrills, Josephine's is based on intimacy. There's an innocent chemistry between her and your Inquisitor that leads to warm and tender moments. This is far removed from the cataclysm they're both fighting against. It's a beautiful reminder. At the end of a hard day, we don't need coy euphemisms from powerful heroes; we just want someone to come home to. -- Giancarlo

While I vastly prefer the Mass Effect side of BioWare romances, Morrigan will always stand out to me. I didn't exactly love this somewhat toxic romance, but it is one of the most fascinating. Morrigan as a character is phenomenal and one of the standouts of Dragon Age Origins. The implications of this particular romance and a certain endgame plot decision make this one of the more complicated romances in BioWare's history. Also, shout out to the also complex and wonderful Dorian in Dragon Age: Inquisition. -- Cody

Dragon Age: The Veilguard releases for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on October 31, 2024.

Review: Shin-chan: Shiro and the Coal Town Shares a Summer Fantasy

While Crayon Shin-chan humor can sometimes be a bit crude and the character designs might look a little harsh compared to other anime series, recent games have proven themselves to be smooth, soothing experiences. Shin-chan: Shiro and the Coal Town is a prime example. It's a relaxing game that focuses more on the pastoral charms of a quiet, countryside life and moving at your own pace, with the goofiness and madcap elements of the series offering entertaining and comedic diversions.

Shin-chan: Shiro and the Coal Town starts with the pleasure that comes from living a gentle, kind life as a small child in a safe, tiny town. Shinnosuke and his family are currently living in Akita after his father's job brought them there on a research project. Since his grandparents live nearby, Shinnosuke's spends many days learning from his grandfather Ginnosuke and leisurely exploring the area with him. He collects bugs, fish, and plants for a local author. He meets kids around town. He takes requests to access new areas.

However, after getting established in Akita, Shinnosuke learns there's a whole other area to explore, and it is one that apparently needs his unique help. Shiro leads him to a mysterious train platform in the nearby forest and, after getting on a car, it takes the two to Coal Town. It turns out Coal Town is in some sort of danger, and a young girl named Sumi asked Shiro to bring Shinnosuke there after she met the dog. Once there, you get involved in helping the town and its citizens as well, doing things like aiding an inventor named Yumi, assisting in creating food for Yosoi's diner to sell, and challenging people to trolly races.

Since this is a life sim, the gameplay loop is quite lowkey. After Shinnosuke wakes up and has breakfast with his parents and grandparents, we are left to spend the day however we'd like. If we decide to stay around Akita, that might mean tending to the garden and the things we've grown, hanging out with the kids and neighbors nearby, fishing, collecting bugs, and generally experiencing a relaxed daily life.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0prrCLPdk5M&t=4s&ab_channel=%E3%83%8D%E3%82%AA%E3%82%B9%E3%82%AD%E3%83%83%E3%82%BATV

Should someone head to Coal Town, odds are the narrative will advance a bit further. Not that there aren't story-related activities happening around Akita. However, as the more otherworldly and unusual area, we're pulled in to helping make a difference there. Especially in the case of revitalizing the diner and aiding with inventions. It's also where you can get involved in trolley races, which is one of the more active activities. But again, even though sometimes it might seem like more is "happening" there, we can set our own pace.

Since it is a very low-stakes game where a player can take their time, it also might make some of the more minor issues feel like less of a problem. For example, catching bugs can be a bit tricky. They're small, after all, and with ones like fireflies it may be difficult to discern exactly when you should swing the net. (I recommend looking for the shadow!) When filling out the compendium for wildlife or getting specific items for quests, it might be a little frustrating if you just can't come across the right fish or ore that you need. (Fish shadow shapes are different, though they are hard to see, and Shiro will alert you to rare items sometimes!)

Also, I feel like the environmental design and direction means that even if someone normally wouldn't be a fan of Crayon Shin-chan, Shin-chan: Shiro and the Coal Town can still prove to be an incredibly appealing game. Both the designs of Akita and Coal Town are amazing, as well as very different. They occupy very opposite sides of the spectrum. In Akita, we have these wide, open, natural spaces filled with greenery, rustic homes, and more natural elements. Coal Town is a cobbled together industrial town. From a glance, you can see how the mines are the main reason it even exists. Yet even though it is crowded, polluted, and more densely packed with people, it's still equally beautiful.

Shin-chan: Shiro and the Coal Town is a slow life simulation game paired with an engaging adventure involving the mysterious Coal Town. It's a really relaxed and pleasant play, as a result. You can take your time with it and enjoy the ambiance. The only thing that might get in the way of some people's appreciation or enjoyment of the experience is the presence of Shin-chan himself, as not everyone might appreciate his humor or the series' character design. Still, even if you are apprehensive, it's a soothing way to savor the last bits of summer before easing into winter.

Shin-chan: Shiro and the Coal Town is available on the Nintendo Switch and PC.
