Aim your gun, shoot enemies, and don't get shot yourself. But it's the finer details that make one shooter different from the next. Doom Eternal, for example, has the ultra-fast movement and the meathook shotgun. Titanfall 2 has free-running and the set-piece mech sections. And in Metro, it's all about the equipment. Weapons fall to pieces. Kinetic flashlights have to be recharged. Your gas mask gets covered with water and mud. These may seem superficial, but in practice, they make Metro 2033, Last Light, and Metro Exodus some of the tensest FPS games of the last 20 years - and now you can get them all for $7. There has never been a better time than right this second – averaged out, and despite repeated attempts to the contrary, humanity has never been healthier, freer, or more enlightened by knowledge. It's true of games too. For every by-committee platter of passionless map markers, there are thousands of more personal, more creative, more interesting works, all adding to the decades' worth of great stuff we can still play today. What isn't bollocks is the emotional pull that nostalgia, for all its lack of cold, hard reason, still manages to wield inside our warm, squishy brains. Hence, the centrepiece of Apex Legends' Season 23 update is a mode that recreates the battle royale FPS as it was back in 2019, defaulting back to the original map and weapon arsenal while cutting the 26-strong legend roster to the earliest ten. It's a Fortnite-style rolling back of the clock, and a passably enjoyable one, but also a reminder that the good old days weren't always that good. |

Amazon announced that a Mass Effect TV show is officially in development. While little is known about the nature of the project, Variety reported that the key figures involved in the production are Daniel Casey, Ari Arad, Karim Zreik, and EA's Michael Gamble. [Thanks, Variety!]
Daniel Casey, who is the lead writer and an executive producer on the Mass Effect TV show, is best known for his work on F9: the Fast Saga and the sci-fi film Kin. Karim Zreik will also be executive producer on the show, which falls under his Cedar Tree Productions label. Zreik's past work included executive producer credits on Marvel Studios projects like Daredevil and The Punisher. Ari Arad's career involved multiple other video game adaptations, including 2017's Ghost in the Shell, 2022's Uncharted, and most recently the 2024 movie Borderlands.
This is not the only video game project Amazon Studios has been working on. A live action TV series adaptation of Yakuza or Like a Dragon is currently streaming on Prime. In addition, an anthology series called Secret Level, which will feature 15 shorts based on the worlds of various video games by the creative team behind Love, Death and Robots, will be airing on Prime starting on December 10, 2024.
No plot details are currently known about the TV show, and there is no hint as to whether it will be an adaptation of Commander Shepherd's adventures or an all new story. There is no projected release date at this time.
The Mass Effect TV show is in development for Amazon Prime.

Larian Studios revealed all the upcoming additions we'll see in the PS5 Pro version of Baldur's Gate 3. There are multiple major upgrades, as well as one major fix to improve performance.
Primarily, the improvements involve its visual. On the PS5 Pro, the Baldur's Gate 3 Quality mode means the game will display at native 4K resolution while maintaining 30 FPS during gameplay. If someone chooses Performance mode, it will run at 60 FPS while upscaling from 1440p to 2160p using the PSSR technology.
Notably, a fix for the multiplayer mode will also be deployed in this patch. Split screen gameplay in Baldur's Gate 3 maintaining 30 FPS on Quality mode and 60 FPS on Performance mode.
The other update involves the PC version. A fix will be deployed for mods in-game. It remedies an issue that meant you couldn't download or subscribe to mods when joining another player's multiplayer session with mods enabled.
This is one of many Baldur's Gate 3 updates with substantial content additions for Larian Studios' latest adventure. In September, 2024, a massive update for the game released. It added new ending cinematics, mature content toggles, and an in-game mod manager.
Baldur's Gate 3 is available now on the Xbox Series X, PS5, and PC, and there are PS5 Pro features.
