Mina the Hollower is quite clearly a Halloween game. The thing about Halloween is that there should always be a little bit silliness amongst the horrific and the scary, and Yacht Club Games' next retro throwback seemed quite well fitted for the season. It was so appropriate that it was even planned to be released on October 31st! All of this to say, yes, Mina the Hollower is delayed, and it doesn't have a new release date either.

Marathon lives! Well, of course it does, it would be quite shocking if PlayStation were to cancel it before it even got a chance to become Concord 2, but that's neither here nor there. What is here, and soon to be there, is another playtest, of which sign-ups are now available. It is being dubbed a "closed technical test," and plans to run for just a few days, between October 22nd and October 28th, but there are a few differences to be found compared to when we last saw it.

In the late '90s, early 2000s, there were two distinct flavours of aesthetics: boomer shooters, and Y2K girlypop vibes (for the sake of this argument we will ignore every other aesthetic that existed at the time). Boomer shooters like Doom and Wolfenstein were bloody, gory, and had a real "video games are gritty and cool now kind of vibe." Conversely, products aimed at young girls were often glittery, pink, featured leopard print, and were often about love and harmony. Don't Stop, Girlypop! is a game that combines these two vibes, and it is very good (and stressful).

Unlock Neige in SAO Fractured Daydream via Neige Fragments

Bandai Namco announced that Neige will be a free character for folks to earn in Sword Art Online Fractured Daydream, however she is locked behind the SAO Extreme Boss Raids and Neige Fragments. She is a season 5 character alongside Spriggan Kirito, who is being sold in the in-game shop.

Neige is an original character who debuted in Sword Art Online Fractured Daydream, who supports the other original SAO character Fuuka throughout the game. (Fuuka was also released as a free character, and we needed to finish the Main Story Quest to get that Mage.) The announcement confirmed she will be a Tank and be voiced by Mariya Ise, just as she is throughout the campaign. Her teaser image also noted she can be used as a Support in some ways, due to the auto-guard effect of her Extra Skill.

Meanwhile, Spriggan Kirito is based on his ALfheim Online appearance. He is a Rogue.

Here are the teaser images for both Neige and Spriggan Kirito in SAO Fractured Daydream:

There is also a trailer highlighting what this Rogue version of Kirito can do in a fight.

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid Movie Debuts in October

Crunchyroll set a US release date for the anime movie Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid: A Lonely Dragon Wants to Be Loved. The film will show up on October 20, 2025. Fandango is already selling tickets for showings, which seem to be around $12 for children and about $15 for adults. It will be a one-day event, so that is the only chance for folks to see it in theaters.

The announcement also offered additional elaboration on the film. It continues the story after the second season of the anime, which is also streaming on Crunchyroll. The focus is on Kanna and whether she will choose to stay with Kobayashi, Tohru, and Iruru or return to her father and family Kamun Kamui. At the same time, there's a potential of a possible war between dragons, and the Kobayashi family might be able to help settle it.

Here's the trailer for the Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid movie, which debuted in Japan back in June 2025. The full film will be in Japanese with English subtitles, just like that video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgJW1y1_ig0

This is one of multiple Crunchyroll anime movie showings over the next few months. The second is Overlord: A Celebration of the Anime's 10th Anniversary. That airs on November 17, 2025. That will be followed by a Crunchyroll Anime Nights: Secret Sneak on December 15, 2025.

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid: A Lonely Dragon Wants to Be Loved will appear in US movie theaters on October 20, 2025. The anime is streaming on Crunchyroll and manga is handled by Seven Seas Entertainment.

Metaphor Re:Fantazio Keychains Feature Every Character

Bandai Namco and Atlus announced there will be Metaphor: ReFantazio keychains of every character, including villains. These are currently showing up on the Japanese Gashapon Online site for 300円 (~$2), which allows someone to pull for them ahead of their eventual release in a few months. They will ship out in February 2026 in Japan. However, the site notes they may appear in physical gashapon machines before that. Bandai Namco also eventually releases them in the US and Canadian storefronts after Japanese launches.

There are 12 characters in the Metaphor: ReFantazio keychain collection, and there are no "secret" ones. So right away, we can see all the styles and know who is available. All of them appear in a chibi style. Each is a rubberized, flat keychain that is about six cm, with a ball chain attached. The site notes the odds of getting each character is fairly even and usually between 8.3% and 8.4%.

Here's the list of every character that appears:

  • Will (main character)
  • Gallica
  • Strohl
  • Grius
  • Hulkenberg
  • Heismay
  • Junah
  • Eupha
  • Basilio
  • Fidelio
  • Louis
  • Neuras

Here's how all 12 will look:

Most recently, we've seen a number of events highlight Metaphor: ReFantazio. Atlus confirmed a Round1 celebration for the game's first anniversary in Burbank, California. It also won an award during the Japan Game Awards 2025 during TGS 2025.

Metaphor: ReFantazio is available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC, and the keychains are on Bandai Namco Gashapon Online now ahead of shipping out in February 2026. They will also eventually appear in the company's capsule machines in Japan and worldwide in the future.

Allies' anti-aircraft gun aiming at an airplane in Battlefield 1942

One of the few PC games I had a CD-ROM of as a kid was Battlefield 1942. Sure, kids shouldn't play Battlefield, but the early 2000s were when today's playerbase of war games for anyone under the age of 14 started taking shape. I remember finding the flying helmets after a headshot particularly impressive, something that's slightly unsettling today.

I can't remember exactly when I played the game, but it was probably around 2005. Now, 20 years later, I'm not that interested in Battlefield 6, which is just around the corner, but I couldn't help but wonder if I could relive the memories of blowing up tanks and shooting soldiers with my sniper.

Years of history are gone

Battlefield 1942 gameplay with an assault rifle.
The game doesn't look so bad. Screenshot by Destructoid.

Turns out, if you don't own a CD with Battlefield 1942, you can't play the game in 2025. Nobody can. The only way to have legal access to the original Battlefield is if you added it to your collection on EA Games' launcher, Origin, when the company gave it away in 2012 to celebrate the franchise's 10th anniversary.

You can also buy the used CDs on eBay for $10 or cheaper, actually, but you have no guarantees it will run on a modern operating system like Windows 11.

The oldest title in the franchise on EA's online Store is Battlefield 3 (2011). The same is true for Steam. Battlefield 3 is the only title with official support by the company and the closest one to the origin of the series, which also means 11 games, spanning 10 years of Battlefield history, are impossible to play on the main PC platforms. The situation will probably not improve. With EA's $55 billion sale to private investors, it's unlikely things will change. The new owners want profit, and that's certainly not coming from providing support to a 2002 game a millennial like me is nostalgic about. So I decided to see if I could at least play one of these lost games.

Battlefield: Vietnam, the sequel to Battlefield 1942, was the closest I got to finding a way to play the origin of the franchise. The game files I found to install it were on a ZIP file on one of these game preservation websites, with a lengthy "how to install" section with eight steps to run the game on Windows 10 or 11. That included running an .exe file I had to pray my antivirus was scanning correctly. While you can run Battlefield: Vietnam on PC, you can't get it to work on modern PlayStation or Xbox consoles through retro-compatibility, and they aren't in collection packs of any kind for a digital download.

It seems like the only hope left to save the story of Battlefield 1942 and play the game today is a Steam Community post. It has yet another compressed file that installs the patched game for you with a bunch of community-made fixes and updates. If it weren't for these fans, it would be literally impossible to play the first Battlefield ever today if you didn't own the original CD that survived the test of time since 2002.

And all those fan-made downloads are actually illegal, because EA still owns the right to the game; it just chose not to sell it anymore. It's very unlikely that any company will go after the end user for pirating an abandoned game, but the people keeping Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield: Vietnam alive will always be at risk for distributing them. We need brave groups of individuals to take actions that could put them in trouble to keep these games alive.

Really, just stop killing games

This abandonment isn't unique to Battlefield and EA, but other companies have made an effort to preserve many of their old games. Nintendo's been releasing digital downloads for their biggest retro hits on their new consoles since the Wii. Other developers release packs with their old titles, like Konami's Castlevania collections and SEGA's Sonic Origins. Hell, they could even just leave the game servers running with rare updates like Valve does with old Counter-Strike games.

It's a shame how it's so easy for game companies to erase the history of their own franchises. Battlefield 1942 is outdated for modern standards, but it holds the key to what made players fall in love with the series and what made it survive for over two decades. Preserving the game is also respecting players' memories and the origins of the game design that made the game grow to the size it is today.

Marathon promotional image

Bungie's extraction shooter Marathon is coming back again at the end of October, about a month past its initial release date, as part of more closed testing.

The developer says it has "run several closed playtests to gather feedback" on the game since June, including a reported test that was paying gamers up to $500 for daily activity. Now, this "closed technical test" coming in a few weeks is a bit wider in scope, but no less important.

Image via Bungie

Marathon's closed alpha test earlier this year did not go well for Bungie, and as such, the game was delayed to allow for more work on the FPS. But already, it sounds like the title may be vastly improved from what we played in April.

"This is an important checkpoint for us as we test our improvements since Alpha, including three maps, five runner shells, prox chat, re-tuned combat pacing, solo queue, deeper environmental storytelling, and more," Bungie said. "That said, the Technical Test build is a work in progress and will only include a portion of what's planned for Marathon's full release, focused on the early player experience."

Proximity chat and a solo queue are two of the biggest complaints players had in the closed alpha, so this already being confirmed in the game and ready for further testing is huge. Previously, you could only queue up in a group, which is obviously a difficult ask for solo players, and proximity chat with others seems to be an important feature for those who love the genre.

I think the most important part of the game, that combat pacing, will be the biggest one to determine whether this game has any juice. I'm not the biggest extraction shooter fan, but even those who enjoy the genre did not have many nice things to say about the core gameplay loop in the alpha.

Leaks from the playtest earlier this month pointed to several new playable characters and maps, and it sounds like they will also be available in this new test. This test will run from Oct. 22 to 28 on PC, PS5, and Xbox, and is invite only via an application on Bungie's site.

Bungie said it will "be sharing a public update on Marathon's development in the coming months" after this next test concludes, so news on a potential new release date could be forthcoming.

Arknights skin in Delta Force

The number of Arknights skins in Delta Force continues to rise past the first anniversary mark, and you'll need Ark Force cards to secure a few of them in your collection.

The latest season has also added to the fresh list of available skins, and you'll need plenty of Ark Force cards. You can obtain this item for free, but you can get more if you're willing to spend your in-game resources. This guide will help you make the most of the Ark Force cards in Delta Force.

How to obtain Ark Force cards in Delta Force

There are two main ways to obtain the Ark Force cards in Delta Force.

  • Free: There's a current Ark Force Cards Giveaway event that went live after the anniversary. There are simple tasks to complete as part of the weekly challenges. They mostly involve logging in, playing a few games, and sometimes a few extra objectives, to get the Ark Force Cards for free.
  • Paid with resources: You can use your Delta Tickets/Coins to get more Ark Force cards. The anniversary event has made it pretty easy to get Delta Tickets for free. They work just like the regular Delta Tickets, but have an expiration date. Hence, you should look to use these tickets first to get Ark Force cards (or elsewhere if you want).

https://twitter.com/DeltaForce_Game/status/1973176036910113079

How to use the Ark Force cards in Delta Force

Once you have obtained the Ark Force Cards, you can then use them to get the Arknights collaboration skins. The Character Skin is the final prize, with its initial odds being set at one percent. However, the chances will go up once you start drawing the other rewards.

The cost in terms of Ark Force cards also goes up the more you draw. You'll have to get 110 Ark Force cards if you want to guarantee yourself all the rewards, including the elusive skin. You can also choose to supplement some of your card supply with real-life cash.
