While major Splatoon 3 updates are done, Splatfest events are still happening, and the recurring Frosty Fest one begins at 4pm PT/7pm ET on January 9, 2026. It will end on January 11, 2026. This marks the third Frosty Fest since the game's debut in September 2022.
While Splatoon 3 launched in 2022, the Frosty Fest Splatfest events didn't start in game until the one that took place in January 2024. Each one features winter themes in Inkopolis and Splatsville, special decorations, holiday mysic, and different outfits for Shiver, Frye, Big Man, Callie, and Marie. The theme for the first one was "who do you spend the holidays with," and the options were Friends (Shiver), Family (Frye), and Solo (Big man), with Team Solo winning. The 2025 event asked "what would make you happiest," with the teams being Money (Shiver), Experiences (Frye), and Presents (Big Man). Team Presents won that year.
The 2026 Frosty Fest is basically a rerun. The theme is "Who do you spend the holidays with" again. The teams are the same too. So you can choose Team Friends (Shiver), Team Family (Frye), and Team Solo (Big Man).

Square Enix announced that the Final Fantasy XIV Online Store is now selling a replica of the costume Garnet, aka Dagger, wears in FFIX for FFXIV avatars called Humble Attire. You will need to pay real cash to get it, and it costs $12. It is available for any player character regardless of species or gender.
The Humble Attire bundle gives a player three pieces of clothing to use in-game. The Humble Overalls is a one-piece outfit with orange overalls over a white top. There are also red Humble Gloves and Humble Boots. These items can be dyed, and the official screenshots show how it looks in three different colors on a male Viera, female Lalafell, and female Miqote. As there is no hat or hood included, there are no issues with species races with large ears or manes like the Viera or Hrothgar.

This comes after Toshiyuki Itahana said the costumes that Sphene wears in the FFXIV Dawntrail expansion are based on the outfits Garnet wears in FFIX. The artist noted the two the character wears are both based on the Dagger "white mage" style outfit and her standard look.
It isn't uncommon for costumes based on other Final Fantasy games to show up in the FFXIV Online Store for Warriors of Light. In the past, ones based on FFX and FFXIII leads showed up. Fantasian crossover costumes most recently appeared.
Final Fantasy XIV and Dawntrail are available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC, and the FFIX Humble Attire Garnet costume is in the FFXIV Online Store now.

Dreams, the company behind collectibles like Sonny Angel and Smiski, announced it is teaming with Sanrio for a Hello Kitty and Friends Hippers peeking character figure line. These are items with an adhesive on their stomach that can be attached to electronics or household items to make the mascot look like they are peeking over the edge at a person. They will be sold in blind boxes for ¥1,430 (~$9) each, and they will appear in Japan on January 23, 2026. As other figures in the line from the company are sold worldwide via stores like Amazon, Kinokuniya, Miniso, or Teso, we should eventually see these everywhere.
There are seven characters in the Hippers Hello Kitty and Friends figure collection. As is common with blind boxes, with a purple version of Kuromi as a secret with lower rates of being acquired. (The odds of getting her weren't announced ahead of launch.) Based on past Hippers releases, each one will be about two inches tall and feature sticky tape on their stomach that is pressed against a surface.

Dreams and Sanrio also released a number of photos showing off each of the figures. Some of these show what the characters would look like in-use peeking at people on objects like picture frames or cell phones. There is also a photo showing what the adhesive looks like on the Hello Kitty version of the figure. The Dreams Hello Kitty and Friends Hippers figures of six Sanrio characters will launch in Japan on January 23, 2026, and we should see them worldwide after.

Twitch and Cover announced on social media it is now possible for everyone to use an emote based on the CEO of the Hololive and Holostars Vtuber company Motoaki "Yagoo" Tanigo. Access appeared the evening of January 8, 2026 worldwide. It is now possible for anyone logged into the platform to use it in chat.
The Yagoo Twitch emote release first happened as a Hololive and Holostars Holoday Vtuber event on Twitch on November 20, 2025. That was the day a number of Cover performers from the English and Indonesian branches joined and all began streaming on Twitch. People who watched streams for set periods of time could earn three special emotes.
Only one of the three Yagoo Twitch emotes from the Hololive and Holostars event is now available for everyone. It's the "Kingoo" design that features Motoaki Tanigo's gold, smiling face. When the event happened, that was known as the "Kingoo" one. The other two were copper "Yagoo" and silver "Sadgoo" styles. To use the one now available, input :yagoo:.

On January 9, 2026, Cygames announced that it established Cygames AI Studio, a subsidiary that will develop and provide generative AI-based tools and services. The website for Cygames AI Studio is available in both English and Japanese.
The announcement on Cygames's official website provided background on why it set up the subsidiary. The company statement claimed generative AI is an important technology that has the power to use accumulated ideas to power the creation of new ones. Cygames AI Studio will use the company's game development experience to build generative AI tools that "creators" could use "safely and securely." It also said that it will research and develop its own model, as well as provide generative AI services and tools for game developers. The announcement also claimed a goal is to "build a unique creative cycle to expand on the creators' creativity."
Cygames is currently recruiting for its AI Studio. Openings include engineers for language models and picture generation. These are full-time jobs that would require the person to live in or move to Japan.
Reactions to the announcement on Twitter have been largely negative. English replies and QRTs call Cygames out of touch, as well as point out established issues with generative AI like art theft. Japanese users are also against this. There has been more and more backlash against generative AI since 2025. In December 2025, the Indie Game Awards stripped Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 of its GOTY wins after it came out that the studio had used generative AI in development and launched with those genAI assets until they were patched out.
Cygames had a good reputation in 2025 with the global release of Umamusume: Pretty Derby, which also won Best Mobile Game at the Game Awards 2025.

We're in the midst of the Street Fighter 6 Year 3 Character Pass DLC rollout, with Alex returning to the roster as the next add-on, and now we got a better look at him. Ahead of his "early Spring 2026" debut, Capcom shared a minute-and-a-half long trailer for him. This one is more about setting up his personality and showing his character design in the fighting game than highlighting gameplay, but it helps establish what to expect.
Like Luke, Alex is a character who was set up in sort of a "protagonist" role when he appeared in the Street Fighter series. He showed up in February 1997 in Street Fighter III. He's known as a wrestler from America, and we see him in the midst of a match where he's acting as the heel.

Alex is the third of four Year 3 Character Pass add-ons for Street Fighter 6, with the fourth piece being Ingrid in "late Spring 2026." This season pass focused on bringing older characters back into the fold. He follows Sagat, who started this latest run back in August 2025, and C. Viper in October 2025.
Street Fighter 6 is available for the Switch 2, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC, and Alex will appear as DLC in early Spring 2026.

Two days after Roblox introduced a new age verification process across all platforms, the results are creating problems for many users.
On Jan. 7, Roblox made "facial age checks" a requirement to chat on the game, requiring you to use a camera and scan your face to use any chat feature. It will then give you an age estimate based on what it sees, shaping your chat experience and defining who you can and cannot interact with.
One of the problems with the feature, at least at the outset, is that it seems to come to incorrect conclusions. In many cases, it's overestimating the age of children and then placing them into a bracket where they can chat with users deemed older than them.
"As the first large online gaming platform to require facial age checks for users of all ages to access chat, this implementation is our next step toward what we believe will be the gold standard for communication safety," Roblox said on Jan. 7. "It enables age-based chat, which promotes a positive, age-appropriate experience for all users globally, and limits communication between adults and children younger than 16."
Roblox said that "tens of millions of daily active users" completed an age check as the feature was rolled out in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands in early December before being widely implemented this week. But the results since then are quite spotty.
One mother from the US told me that the game estimated her 10-year-old daughter was 16 years old. The new facial age check will overwrite whatever actual age the parent entered in the first place, and the information can only be corrected by then scanning some form of identification.
"Even if [my child] had an ID, I wouldn't scan hers into their system to correct it," she told me. "The age verification process often resulting in young kids being placed in older age groups defeats the purpose of trying to keep them safe online."
And if you encounter similar errors or misidentification and want to try to correct the error via Roblox support, it then requires appealing through layers of AI agents before ever reaching a human who can fix it.
"I (37) like to play Roblox with my son (10) pretty frequently," another Reddit post said. "I just age-verified both our accounts and now I can't even chat to my own child in-game? Why the frick are Trusted Connections only available for 13-plus? We spend so much on this game over the years and now it takes away my ability to talk to my own child?"
Roblox has come under heavy scrutiny over the past few years for being a "breeding ground for predators," according to the Florida attorney general, among several similar probes. Last month, the game was completely blocked in Russia for "LGBT propaganda."
These new security measures look to be trying to keep children safe from nefarious users, but their implementation so far is leaving a lot to be desired for many, causing frustration for kids and parents alike.
I tried out the facial scan on a new account myself, and it correctly identified me as "21 or older." But the RobloxHelp Reddit page is overflowing with complaints from many who are reporting issues with the tech, which looks to be largely AI-powered.
Destructoid has reached out to Roblox for comment on this story.
Update on Jan. 9 at 1:35pm CT: Roblox has responded to the article stating that "users can appeal their age check not only with ID verification but also parental controls, which allow parents to update their child's age."

In the midst of increasing AI usage across the board, one publisher is taking a firm stance against the technology, labeling it "cancerous." It has therefore issued a total ban on the use of AI in the games it publishes.
The publisher in question is Hooded Horse, known for supporting countless indie games, some of which are immensely popular and successful. Some of its most notable published games include Manor Lords, Against the Storm, Cataclismo, Endless Legend 2, and Darkwood 2, among others. It's certainly one of the most prominent indie publishers on the market, and it's now using its position to fight against what it perceives as a harmful technology.
In an interview with Kotaku, chief executive Tim Bender said the only thing AI ever did was "[make] our lives more difficult."
"I fucking hate Gen AI art," Bender said, adding that Hooded Horse's publishing contracts include a clause for "no fucking AI assets."
Bender went on to say that the publisher "got to the point" where it communicates to its potential partners that no AI should be used, even as placeholders, because there is always a chance it would "slip through" into the final build.
"Because of that, we're constantly having to watch and deal with it and try to prevent it from slipping in, because it's cancerous," he said.
Bender concluded by saying that it'd be a "betrayal" of all the people in the company's marketing team who produce all sorts of promotional art if they were to be forced into working with something that relies on generative AI. "I wouldn't be able to face them if we had that," he said, indicating that this is more of an ethical stance than a PR-related one.
Enforcing these rules is difficult, but I for one believe it's the right course of action. Sure, some of these devs will use AI and mask it well, especially as the technology gets better, but it's important to have rules in place that openly stand in defiance of this worldwide corporate push toward a reality where things are purely artificial, built on the foundations of millennia of human work and effort just so some CEO somewhere could rake in even more cash than he does now.
At least before that selfsame CEO had to produce something of value, something original and striking enough for people to want to experience, so he could rake in the cash. Now, it's a machine doing everything, regurgitating borderline stolen art into pure slop for the enjoyment of absolutely no one and in the service of exclusively a small portion of people who never cared about art in the first place.

As announced, Larian Studios is hosting an AMA, following a massive controversy over generative AI in its upcoming game, Divinity. The studio's devs, including chief executive Swen Vincke, answered all sorts of questions, including those related to this controversial technology.
In the AMA, held on Jan. 9 on the r/games subreddit, a user asked the studio about its use of generative AI. "What is your opinion on the role of (generative) AI in the game development process, and for your studio in particular," they asked, additionally inquiring if the AI is being used in some departments and not in others.
Vincke first said that "there is not going to be any generative AI art in Divinity," saying that a lot of confusion had been caused in the past over how the tech is used, which led the studio to completely "refrain from using generative AI tools during concept art development." This last caused the greatest amount of controversy in December, with players strongly opposed to AI in art in any capacity.
"That way there can be no discussion about the origin of the art," Vincke added.
However, Larian Studios will not give up on generative AI entirely, as Vincke believes it can "help" with speed, allowing for way more iterations and testing that further leads to better and, apparently, more refined gameplay. "We're trying things out across departments," he said.
"Our hope is that it can aid us to refine ideas faster, leading to a more focused development cycle, less waste, and ultimately, a higher-quality game," Vincke added.
Vincke concluded that creative assets could still be generated by AI, but only by AI trained on data created by Larian itself and fed into its seemingly self-hosted model.
"If we use a GenAI model to create in-game assets, then it'll be trained on data we own," he said, which does confirm AI will be used in art, but only to iterate on what Larian had already created itself, rather than what Call of Duty recently did with Ghibli-filter AI all over the place.
In the same thread, Divinity's writing director, Adam Smith, also noted that no AI is being used in writing whatsoever. While the studio did apparently try to make the technology work for dialogues and other text, it failed to provide satisfactory results, with even the most random human writing ending up being better, so that department seems to be completely AI-free.

ARC Raiders, being a modern online game, has loads of settings you can tweak, but reserves the fine-tuning only for the developers, given how much impact this could have on the overall experience.
However, in one of the latest patches, players discovered a console was added, allowing players to carefully tune each and every aspect of the game, chiefly the graphics, providing new ways to optimize for performance.
So, here's how you can enable it.
How to enable the console in ARC Raiders
To get the console in ARC Raiders, you'll have to do a few steps. This is chiefly for the Steam version of the game, as there is apparently no way to enable the console on, well, consoles at the moment.
Here's what you should do:
The exact list of commands is still relatively unknown, so we won't be including them here. Using console commands to disable certain aspects of the graphics has also been labeled as cheating by some players and is likely to be targeted by the developers in the coming patches and hotfixes. Therefore, we'll include a list of ethical commands once Embark has cleared things up.
In the meantime, you can try to tweak the settings yourself.

Season 4 is live in NBA 2K26, and we have a new season pass to grind.
The Season 4 pass has 40 levels of rewards, with each having two different items on offer. If you manage to complete the full pass, you can obtain 80 items. Opting for the paid upgrade will fetch you 40 extra rewards (on top of all that's available on the free pass).
This guide will provide you with a list of everything you can earn in the fourth season.

The table below has all the rewards you can grind from the Season 4 Pass.
To unlock the rewards, you have to get seasonal XP, which is shared across different modes. Once you hit certain milestones, you'll be able to unlock the applicable rewards.
