I’m taking a break from a New York Times Crossplay battle to deliver this summary of the week’s biggest tech news, so I hope you appreciate it. Oh, you haven’t heard about Crossplay?
You can read all about its development in this article – its arrival may be the most fun but least impactful news of the week.
As for the most impactful news, I’d pick the Apple rumor that claims the Cupertino tech giant is about to give us
a very ChatGPT-like Siri. Underneath will still be those Gemini models (powering Apple’s Foundation models), but this is a surprising turn from the company, which has insisted (to my face) that a chatty Siri was never the plan.
My favorite TV ever, the LG C5 OLED,
has middling sound but an amazing picture, and one of its best features may be its low reflectivity. I wonder how many would be willing to give that up for a much cheaper panel, especially with those cheaper panels shaping up to be
pretty impressive this year. And remember the 3D TV fad? We all thought everyone would be buying 3D TV (not me, FWIW) until we all realized it was something few cared about.
The
recent fascination with keyboard phones reminds me of that. The high interest is driven by nostalgia, and by what Apple is failing to do with its all-screen smartphones, but this is another fad that few actually want, IMHO.
Over in Android land I keep refreshing my Galaxy Z Fold 7, looking for OneUI 8.5 so that I can try the
new, Perplexity-powered, Bixby. Maybe I’ll finally care about Samsung’s original digital assistant.
I really want to get back to my game, but maybe I’ll take a break and watch The Rock in the now Oscar-nominated
The Smashing Machine, or
Wonder Man, which sounds kind of awesome – if you need some ideas for what to watch this weekend, check out our round-up below.
Enjoy your weekend – and if you happen to be in the US, get your shovels ready.
