Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, March 9, 2026 8:46 AM When Emil Pagliarulo was growing up in South Boston, he lived in fear of Whitey Bulger: a local crime boss who had been shaped not only by street gangs but Alcatraz, and a stint in the CIA's mind control program, MKUltra. "He was basically the boogeyman," Pagliarulo says. "He was the evil bad guy. You didn't know where he was or even what he looked like, but you knew he was out there. I'm 10 years old, and I know this name." Decades later, as Bethesda Game Studios shifted into full production on Fallout 4, Pagliarulo drew on those memories to bring a post-apocalyptic Boston to life. "The game was missing something, as far as one of the overall themes," he says. "I remember having a conversation with Todd Howard that there should be this overriding sense of paranoia that people have, and they don't know who to trust." |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, March 9, 2026 7:57 AM Valve have reworded a Steam blog post after its original, unsure-sounding text left open the possibility of further long-term delays to the new Steam Machine. The 2025 Year in Review article only briefly touches on the Machine, as well as the upcoming Steam Controller redesign and the Steam Frame VR headset, but its previous phrasing of "We hope to ship in 2026" – accompanied by a reminder of ongoing and widespread memory shortages – did have the kind of noncommittal yeah-we'll-seeism that one might apply when responding to an unwanted dinner party invitation. The grim possibility of another delay, this time into 2027, hung heavy. Now, however, that passage has been replaced with a more confident and definitive commitment to a 2026 release. "We shared recently that there have been challenges with memory and storage shortages," Valve's update reads, "but we will be shipping all three products this year." |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, March 9, 2026 7:54 AM Sadly, I must report that Edwin has once again been eaten by the Maw. I want to say it was through some devious ruse but, reader, it was not. As Edwin worked the gaps between the Maw's canines with the 8-foot toothpick, one of the Maw's smaller tentacles slipped behind our news editor and tapped him on the shoulder. Edwin turned his head. It was only for a moment, but it was all that was needed to gobble him up. Not to worry, Edwin will surely have worked his way out of one of the Maw's orifices (orifici?) and be back on duty shortly. In his stead, let me provide this week's delivery of games. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, March 9, 2026 4:28 AM Slay The Spire 2 launched into early access last week to the tune of over half a million Steam concurrents, which isn't too shabby for a game with placeholder art that looks like it was knocked up in MS Paint. I played a couple runs of the roguelike deckbuilder this weekend, and experienced such positive emotions as Wait, Doesn't This Basically Break The Game? Delightfully Devilish, Seymour and Oh, I Forgot I Had That Potion. I wouldn't say I'm bowled over, mind. The original Slay The Spire precipitated a Cambrian explosion of roguelite or roguelike deckbuilders. The sequel has to stand apart from both its predecessor and from all the games Spire has in-Spired, like Monster Train. While not without precedent, the co-op functionality could be its silver bullet. So it's just as well that the game's first round of patches are targetting problems with multiplayer. |

We're seeing a take on Ys IV on another platform yet again. XSEED confirmed there will be a Switch version of Ys Memoire: Revelations in Celceta following appearances of the remake on other platforms. It will launch on April 28, 2026. Digital copies will cost $29.99, while a Day One physical edition will be $59.99.
The Ys games numbers don't correspond to their place in the timeline, so Memoire: Revelations in Celceta chronologically happens before The Oath in Felghana. Adol is suffering from amnesia as it begins, and as he maps Celceta's forest he begins to remember who he is and engage in activities that protect and save folks around him.
While the digital copy only gets someone the game, physical ones include other bonuses. Someone gets a physical Switch cart of the title, an acrylic stand that can be used as a keychain, five art cards, a two-CD soundtrack, and a cloth map of Celceta. t's only being sold directly through XSEED and Marvelous.
Here's how that looks:
This comes just over a year after Falcom and XSEED brought another Ys entry back. Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana showed up on the Switch, PS4, and PS5 in January 2025. As a reminder, that's a remake of the third game.
Ys Memoire: Revelations in Celceta will come to the Switch on April 28, 2026. It is already on the PS4, Vita, and PC.

Square Enix is working with Movic to hold a new Final Fantasy XIV exhibit in Japan throughout the spring season of 2026. The FFXIV exhibit will have the title "Adventurer's Chronicle," and it will take place in Tokyo and Osaka.
The exhibit will appear first in Tokyo on the 3rd floor (Exhibition Hall C) of Ikebukuro Sunshine City's Bunkakaikan Building from April 25 until May 10, 2026. Square Enix will afterward move the exhibit to Osaka at the ATC Gallery from May 30 to June 14, 2026. Both venues will open from 10 AM to 8 PM—with the final day on each respective venue closing earlier at 5 PM—and visitors will be able to enter up until 30 minutes before closure.
Barely any details for this FFXIV exhibit have appeared as of this announcement, apart from the key visual art. Square Enix noted in the Japanese press release, though, that this exhibit will let visitors trace back the adventures of the Warrior of Light through the pieces of art displayed in the venues.
Square Enix has also published a teaser trailer on the exhibition's official website and social media account:
This exhibit will be based on Final Fantasy XIV, the online RPG available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. Square Enix will also hold the XCI (91st) FFXIV Letter from the Producer Live stream on March 13, 2026.
The Final Fantasy XIV Adventurer's Chronicle exhibit will run at Ikebukuro Sunshine City in Tokyo from April 25 to May 10, 2026, and at ATC Gallery in Osaka from May 30 to June 14, 2026.

March 9 brings the Week 19 Trials in ARC Raiders. The new set of trials has five tasks to complete if you want to get the best rewards.
As always, you'll have to find some specific items and take down certain ARCs to complete the trials. Let's look at all the activities that are part of the current trials.
Table of contents
ARC Raiders Week 19 Trials walkthrough
Here are the five tasks of the Week 19 Trials.
Open containers inside the traffic tunnels
To complete this task, you have to wait for the Locked Gate map event. This event takes place on the Blue Gate map. Here's a complete guide about how to finish the task, but here's a quick overview.
Search Raider Caches
The spot for Raider Caches has not changed at all in Season 3. They can be found on all the maps, and they're usually located on the outskirts. The following image shows some of the key spots where you can find caches on the Spaceport map.
Incidentally, the last major update in ARC Raiders has added something called First Wave Raider Caches. Finding these caches also counts towards completing this task.
Damage Rocketeers, Leapers, or Bastions
To complete this task, you have to damage and go up against some of the biggest ARCs in the game. While you can find them randomly on the map, the better alternative is to participate in a Matriarch event. You'll always find all three by the Matriarch, and it's the best way to rack up the necessary hits to get all three stars.
Weapons like the Jupiter and the Equalizer are great if you've found the Legendaries. However, you can also use the Hullcracker to do some major damage.
Destroy Ticks
This is an extremely simple task since Ticks are the weakest of all ARCs. You can destroy them with a single hit from any weapon or by smashing them with your pickaxe. They can be found on all maps, but you can raise the chances of encountering them on the Stella Montis map.
Open the rooms on Stella Montis, and you should encounter a fair number of them pretty quickly. You should be able to destroy the required number of Ticks in a few raids at most.
Destroy ARC enemies in the Swamp
For the last task of this week, head to the Swamp locations (marked in the image above) on the Dam Battlegrounds map. These will be the Hydrophonic Dome Complex, Old Battleground, and the South Swamp Outpost.
Once you're in the areas, wait for an encounter with ARCs. Any ARC qualifies for the task, but you need to destroy them to make your work count for the trials.
