30 year old JRPG Romancing SaGa 2 finally gets its due with a new, full remake

Back before the Final Fantasy and Square Enix developers fused together to become Square Enix, series creator Square (as they were at the time) also brought us another essential JRPG series, the most popular of which was 1993's Romancing SaGa 2. A fundamental early pillar of the genre, its nonlinear structure and broad class selection made it a key influence on the industry, but it didn't make it to a worldwide launch until 2016. Now, its full-scale remake has finally arrived, modernizing it for a 2024 audience, and it's already proving a hit on Steam.

Intel decided not to buy Nvidia in

Former Intel CEO Paul Otellini presented the idea of Intel buying Nvidia, but the board resisted it, according to a new report. Back then, in 2005, AMD and ATi were two separate companies, and Nvidia was primarily a gaming GPU maker, rather than the AI data center behemoth of today. Having one of the top GPU makers in Intel's stable could have changed the PC landscape as we know it, perhaps with Intel CPU designs containing integrated Nvidia GeForce GPUs.

If this had happened, we wouldn't just be looking at a very different landscape when it comes to the best gaming CPU battle, but also the best graphics card war. At this time, the mooted price for Nvidia was reportedly $20 billion, almost four times the $5.4 billion total AMD paid for ATi with a mix of cash and stock, while Intel itself was worth around $150 billion.

What is the Black Ops 6 Prestige system? Getting the psychological edge over your opponents in Call of Duty can go a long way in winning a multiplayer match. Sure, your aim, loadouts, and general skill are huge factors in securing victory, but if you can put your enemies on the back foot before a single shot has been fired, you're in a great spot to dominate.

New open-world game from Just Cause dev looks like spiritual successor to GTA 4

GTA 6 is on the way and naturally I'm enthusiastic about the return of both Vice City and Rockstar's open-world crime saga, but one of the best Grand Theft Auto games - arguably the best - is, and always will be, GTA 4. Compared to San Andreas (and GTA 5), Grand Theft Auto 4 is somber, moody, mature, and atmospheric. Niko Bellic's bleak revenge tragedy combined with the reimagined Liberty City, still one of the best settings in videogame history, make GTA 4 better than almost all of its genre contemporaries. Released 16 years ago, it appears now that the spirit of Grand Theft Auto 4 lives on. Liquid Swords, the studio founded by Just Cause creator and former Avalanche developer Christofer Sundberg, just teased its first project, an open-world game with a recognizable aesthetic.

The precision-platformer is a torturous genre at the best of times, and now developers Brlka and publishers Ysbryd Games have seen fit to combine it with Silent Hill. Their forthcoming Love Eternal is the story of Maya, a girl whisked off to a "castle built of bitter memories" by a weird, lonely god, and obliged to make her way "through over 100 screens filled with spikes, lasers, switches, and traps".

When not getting spiked or lasered, Maya appears to spend her days in a kind of metaphorical suburban household. Here, she will contend with things like people crawling on the ceiling and coming over all Babadook. Maya does have one major advantage: the ability to reverse gravity. Watch her put that ability to use in the new trailer.

Kuro Game announced it will release a figure of the Wuthering Waves Shorekeeper. She will debut in August 2025, and the developer already confirmed she will launch worldwide for about $65. However, AmiAmi is the only storefront currently showing her and listing the correct price for the item.

Shorekeeper first debuted in Wuthering Waves as a playable Resonator in September 2024. She's a five-star Spectro character who uses a Rectifier to attack. In-battle, she's known for her ability to heal with both Chaos Theory and End Loop, and  there is a butterfly motif to her due to the Dim Star Butterflies she can summon with her skill. This is also shown in her figure, as a single butterfly is perched on her figure.

The figure of her is a 1/7th scale one. It stands at almost 11 inches tall (278mm). At select stores, such as AmiAmi, someone also gets an acrylic keychain of the the character with their purchase.

Here's a gallery of initial images of Shorekeeper.

She isn't the only Wuthering Waves figure to appear. There's one of Jiyan promised as well. Kuro is also working on other items based on the game. There will be pins, postcards, and different kinds of acrylic stands released over the coming weeks and months.

Wuthering Waves is available on PCs and mobile devices, and a PS5 version is in development. The Shorekeeper figure will launch in August 2025.

The Switch Isn't the Best Way to Play Wildermyth: Console Edition Yet

I love Wildermyth. The PC version is an all-time favorite and a Steam game a regularly savor. I enjoy playing it with another person. The Omenroad DLC opened up a new way to appreciate it. It made me hope Wildermyth: Console Edition on the Switch would be just as much fun. However, at least immediately after launch, it's both flawed and missing elements that help make it such a special experience. It's made especially sad since I get the feeling I'll primarily play it alone.

For those unaware of how it works, Wildermyth is a procedurally generated, turn-based strategy game. You start with three characters, which can fall into hunter, mystic, or warrior categories. (Don't worry, as you almost immediately get to pick up a fourth ally when the adventure starts.) You pick one of a handful of campaigns for your general framework and foes. While the general goal of a campaign remains a same, how you get there changes due to random events, choices you make, and actions you undertake in battle. It ends up feeling quite unique, especially since you also can eventually recruit past legacy heroes from your older stories into new campaigns.

But while I do love having a new place to play Wildermyth, I am a bit heartbroken to see that Wildermyth: Console Edition on Switch at launch isn't completely on-par with or caught up to the PC version. The Omenroad DLC that added roguelike elements to the PC version is one of my absolute favorite ways to play the game alone now. That isn't here. There's no word yet on when it will be here, with the team on social media having said, "There aren't any current plans to bring Omenroad to the console version, but we'd love to see it added in the future, if possible." So I'm disappointed that an element of the game I've really come to enjoy isn't available.

The other thing is that, as I mentioned earlier, I expect to play Wildermyth: Console Edition solo on the Switch. This is because online multiplayer is absent for this release. Which, honestly, I see as being a real bummer. I get sacrifices have to be made. However, when I'd played the game in the past, almost every time I did so in online multiplayer. The only time I really went on single-player campaigns was primarily when I was tackling the Omenroad DLC for coverage purposes. It very much feels like a cooperative experience for me, and trying to not only get four people together for a Switch session is extremely difficult. So I'm really mourning its absence here.

But while those are things you can know about going in, the bugs are something you might not expect. During the tutorial, Wildermyth: Console Edition crashed two times in the second year on the Switch, and once in the third. It's a blessing there are autosaves, so at least I didn't lose much progress. However, it's always disappointed when that's a problem at launch.

Another issue is that enemies don't always render properly. It won't happen in every battle, mind you. Sometimes, it will be fine. But every few matches, you'll be faced with odd boxes on the field instead of your expected opponents. They warp and glitch out. It can even make targeting difficult, since I found I'd sometimes have problems properly selecting them.

I will say that with this version, we do get a Monster Compendium, at least. Which is fine. It's a bestiary that lets you go over the enemies from the different campaigns as you play them. I feel it'd be most handy if you're trying to start a new run and want a refresher of who'd you encounter in each one. You know, see if you're up to dealing with some of the more frustrating enemies. (Stormthroats and Deevens are so annoying.) But I'm honestly playing Wildermyth more to see what heroes I create and how strong they can become, so learning more about opponents isn't too much of a priority. It's nice to have, but I didn't use it beyond checking it out for this review.

Wildermyth: Console Edition is fun thing to have and the Switch game library is improved by its existence, but it can't top the PC release. At least, not yet. The game is generally great. It's a joy when it works well. However, it isn't the best way to play Wildermyth, and that's a shame. As much fun as it is, its omission of later additions like Omenroad, lack of online multiplayer, and rampant bugs keep it from being the one I'd recommend.

Wildermyth: Console Edition is available on the Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. The original game debuted on PCs

Rent-A-Girlfriend console game stamp rally

Mages has announced that it will hold a Rent-a-Girlfriend digital stamp rally from late October 2024 until mid-December 2024. This campaign will take place on the Enoshima island in the Japanese prefecture of Kanagawa. Some of the locations on the island will be actually featured in the upcoming console visual novel, which goes by the subtitle The Horizon and the Girlfriend in the Swimsuit.

Aspiring participants must first install the stamp rally app furari on their smartphones. The campaign will primarily take place at four locations: the Enoshima Benzaiten Nakamise Dori street, the Sea Candle lighthouse, the Dragon Love Bell, and the Enoshima Jinja shrine. The latter will more specifically have participants visit the He-tsu-miya, Naka-tsu-miya, and Oku-tsu-miya shrines. Those who have completed all stamps can afterward leave the island and head to the Fujisawa City Tourist Center to receive an exclusive clear file as a reward.

The upcoming visual novel is not the only entry to feature Enoshima, though. The island has also been extensively featured in the Rent-a-Girlfriend franchise. Besides the anime adaptation, locations on the island have also appeared in Reiji Miyajima's original manga series.

The Rent-a-Girlfriend: The Horizon and the Girlfriend in the Swimsuit digital stamp rally will run from October 28, 2024, until December 15, 2024. This stamp rally will help promote the release of the franchise's adventure visual novel for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in Japan on November 28, 2024.

Steam Cloud Saves Come to Silent Hill 2 on PC

Konami and Bloober announced that the PC version of Silent Hill 2 now supports the Steam Cloud Saves feature. However, you do need to download the October 25, 2024 patch to bring it up to 1.05. Also, there are other consequences to this being added to the game.

Once you get the Silent Hill 2 PC patch, Steam Cloud Saves immediately kick in when you start the game. This means that it will always rely on those save files shared to the cloud. Konami and Bloober warned that if someone wanted to keep saving their local files, they should keep track of the folder where those are kept and back them up. You should be able to find them in "AppData\Local\SilentHill2\Saved\SaveGames" under your username on your computer.

This isn't the only change in this update. It also acts as a hotfix for the PS5 version of the game. Patch 1.04 made it impossible to progress in the Labyrinth if you had saved there, and 1.05 allows those people to continue playing the game.

These sorts of patches come regularly. For example, earlier in October 2024, a patch appeared to prevent James from getting "stuck" in certain situations.

Silent Hill 2 is available for the PS5 and PC. It will be about a year before the PS5 exclusivity arrangement expires.

Final Fantasy XI Harvest Festival Begins for Halloween

Square Enix announced that Halloween has come to Final Fantasy XI, as the Harvest Festival is now live in the MMORPG. There are multiple activities available, including a costume contest, pumpkins to find, festival stalls, and the Wake of the Lilies.

Essentially, you'll want to visit the Bastok, San d'Oria, and Windurst areas to take part. Decorations will be placed in public areas. The Harvest Festival Stalls will be at Bastok Mines (H-8), Northern San d'Oria (D-8), and Windurst Waters (G-10), and you can get lanterns for Mog Houses at each one. There will be NPCs in costumes that will give you costumes in exchange for sweets. If you give them one, you will dress up like they do. Cyhiraeth forms will be available as a part of this.

As for activities, those are a bit more specific and have rewards tied to them. There are three to take part in. The Pink Masquerade Costume Contest can net you a Botulus Suit. Wake of the Lilies means aiding Exorcists each day. Your Purple-winged Partners involves helping moogles in three regions. Finally, you can get get things like the Cait Sith Subligar, Sheet of Ancient Battle Tunes, and Sheet of Harvest Tunes for finding Vana'diel's pumpkins.

Here are the locations for some of those events. Square Enix didn't say where the nine special pumpkins are hidden, naturally.

  • Pink Masquerade Costume Contest - Bastok Markets (G-8), Bastok Mines (H-8), Northern San d'Oria (F-6), Southern San d'Oria (I-8), Windurst Waters (G-9), and Windurst Woods (H-11).
  • Purple-winged Partners - East Ronfaure (G-6), East Sarutabaruta (G-11), North Gustaberg (L-8), South Gustaberg (J-7), West Ronfaure (I-6), and West Sarutabaruta (J-8).
  • Wake of the Lilies - Bastok Markets (Brian at G-8), Northern San d'Oria (Gertrude at D-8), and Windurst Waters north side (Roger at F-5)

Final Fantasy XI isn't the only entry with a Halloween event running, as one is live in FFXIV too. The All Saints' Wake event returned back on October 18, 2024. This year there's a new goth/emo style outfit for us to earn.

Final Fantasy XI is available on PCs, and the Harvest Festival is back until November 8, 2024.

Slay the Princess — The Pristine Cut Tears Up the Rule Book On the Damsel Stereotype

I had no idea what to expect when I began playing Slay the Princess: The Pristine Cut. All I knew is that the original edition received tremendously high praise when it was released back in 2023. This disturbingly dark visual novel breaks away from the norm in every way possible. It twists the traditional love story of a courageous hero rescuing a damsel in distress into an unsettling Lovecraftian tale, proposing fascinating psychological and philosophical ideas in the best way.

Image via Black Tabby Games

We often encounter narratives in modern media that stick to familiar, tried-and-tested formulas. While these stereotypical approaches can be effective, they don't always require a deep understanding of lore or a strong emotional investment in the backstory. Let's take one of gaming's most iconic icons, Mario. I don't think the majority of people who play the Mario titles are motivated to because they want to save Princess Peach from Bowser, but it's an easy-to-understand premise that lets you jump into the action rather quickly.

This is where Black Tabby Games recontextualizes and cleverly plays with the accepted formulas in Slay the Princess. Like Doki Doki Literature Club, this is not the type of horror experience that delivers jump-scares, but allows you to make decisions that will shape how the story will turn out. It uses the visual novel format to mimic the experience you would find in a Choose Your Own Adventure storybook. The premise is relatively simple, and the title of the game slightly gives it away. Instead of rescuing a fair maiden trapped in a tower, your mission is to eliminate the princess imprisoned in the basement of a cabin.

Slay the Princess — The Pristine Cut Tears Up the Rule Book On the Damsel Stereotype
Image via Black Tabby Games

Your journey starts in the dank and eerie woods, where you will be accompanied by a voice called The Narrator. This ominous voice will tell you to kill the princess. If not, the world will end. You will then be bombarded with many options, from probing this narrator with questions about potential actions you can take. Later down the line, other voices will join you, challenging the authenticity of the first narrator's words and creating a conflicting, but humorous dialogue exchange that mimics the angel and devil on your shoulder dynamic. With such high stakes supposedly on the line, what will you do? Will you listen to The Narrator's words and murder the princess in cold blood or attempt to save her? Regardless of which option you pick, the story will raise profound questions surrounding life and death, free will, and the purpose of existence.

It might sound like I'm being very vague about the plot, and that's because, to an extent, I am. It's hard to divulge massive details about Slay the Princess: The Pristine Cut without spoiling the experience. The less you know, the better. However, I will say that it's incredibly hard not to become engrossed in its narrative, as your actions will create a butterfly effect that directly affects how the world and the princess interact with you. Even merely picking up an item will block out potential outcomes. My first playthrough, which took me about four hours to complete, led to me multiple times physically putting my hand over my mouth in sheer disbelief at what I had witnessed, which resulted in me eagerly starting a new run, wanting to see what would be the aftermaths of different actions.

Slay the Princess — The Pristine Cut Tears Up the Rule Book On the Damsel Stereotype
Image via Black Tabby Games

That being said, the fantastic narrative is not Slay the Princess: The Pristine Cut's only draw. The voice acting also plays a key role, as it really helps bring the world to life and makes you feel like you're in the middle of a fairy tale. Some of the voices will be optimistic, while others will be downright snarky and on the verge of condescending. The best performance is delivered by The Narrator voice actor Jonathan Sims, as he will quite literally cover everything that transpires and will take every opportunity to remind you that you must kill the princess. Honestly, the entire game just wouldn't be the same without the stellar voiceovers.

Another standout feature is its artistic design. Slay the Princess: The Pristine Cut harbors a striking monochrome black-and-white aesthetic, with every background and character being hand-drawn. It only deviates from this color scheme when depicting serious dialogue or blood, making these moments feel genuinely sinister. The imagery is also clearly inspired by cosmic horror, as some of the figures you encounter will be extremely unsettling and grotesque. Some of the most powerful images come from the portrayal of the princess. The fair maiden can display various expressions, from a radiant, warm smile to a sinister stare. The pencil-drawn art beautifully captures the eyes in particular, creating the impression that they are looking right through you.

Image via Black Tabby Games

If you're a returning player, you might be wondering about the new content in Slay the Princess: The Pristine Cut. There are three new chapters, and they're all pretty solid. One of the new chapters was actually one of the first scenarios I came across, which is called "The Cage." It was super creepy, and I remember thinking near the end that no matter what option I picked, I would not like what I was about to see. Some previous routes have also been expanded upon, including "The Den," "The Fury," and "The Apotheosis." A new achievable ending can also be triggered by selecting specific options in the final fight. As mentioned above, I didn't play the original edition, but I like all the new content here. My only minor critique is that I wouldn't say any of the new content is must-see material, so The Pristine Cut may not pique the interest of all the fans who played the previous version. But, given it is a free update for the PC version, it could be worth returning if you enjoy the title.

Slay the Princess: The Pristine Cut is a fantastic horror game that you will think about weeks after you finish playing, as you will be captivated by the story and message the game is trying to portray. It's the type of game where you'll want to close the curtains, dim the lights and binge on for the evening alone or with a friend (if you can agree on options, of course). This is a perfect indie horror title to play during the spooky season and should not be skipped by avid fans of the genre.

Slay the Princess: The Pristine Cut is now available on the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC.

More FFVII Remake Cloud Wall Market Dress Designs Shared

Square Enix regularly shares pieces of concept art for the Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth entries on social media, and the latest show more Cloud Wall Market dress design outfits based on the original FFVII. These include a very small image of the original polygonal version of Cloud alongside eight designs that were considered.

Keep in mind, none of these exact dress designs ended up being identical to the three we can get for Cloud in Wall Market in FFVII Remake. The one that comes closest is the first one, which is most closely based on the original Final Fantasy VII purple dress design. However, a variation of that first one that is black, grey, and white, rather than shades of purple, can be unlocked by not doing any quests. However, the black dress on the far right does bear some resemblance to the dress you get for finishing "Burning Thighs," "A Dynamite Body," and "The Party Never Stops."

Here are the latest piece of concept art teasing how Cloud could have looked when he's all dressed up and trying to meet Don Corneo.

https://twitter.com/ffviir_cloud/status/1849647072380846226?s=61

We have seen more exact concept art for the Final Fantasy VII dress designs that did show up for Cloud in FFVII Remake before. In July 2023, Square Enix showed off the most basic one's art. Then in November 2023, the one with the blue corset appeared.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is on the PS4, PS5, and PC, and FFVII Rebirth is available on the PS5. The third entry in the remake trilogy is still in development.

pokemon tcg surging sparks review

The newest Pokemon Trading Card Game set, Scarlet & Violet: Surging Sparks, has a centerpiece to match the company's holiday sales ambitions, but with internal competition making its debut, the stakes are pretty high for this expansion. So does it have what it takes to keep the game charging forward?

The cover star for Surging Sparks is Pikachu, a reliable standby that seems ever-present, but hasn't actually fronted a TCG expansion since Celebrations three years ago. It's here in its Tera form, making for a card that looks cool if not particularly viable for decks.

It brings with it a batch of Lightning-assisting prints! Tapu Koko searches for Pokemon, Magneton explodes itself to hyper-charge your energy acceleration and Clemont's Quick Wit offers mass healing. We suppose you could use these with Pikachu, but there are likely better centerpieces to use all these boosts. For example, the new Kilowattrel ex! Any attack that just gets stronger with every energy has a lot to offer.

Taking more of a center stage in the set itself is an offering of Dragon-types. Though some appear in their off-type, like Archaludon and Latias, actual TCG Dragons like Alolan Exeggutor and Tatsugiri benefit from a Tera-type version. It makes sense that we'd see them and they'd potentially be good! After all, dragons in the card game have already been relying on multiple energy types, so the jump to three for a Tera attack isn't that huge.

xerneas wo-chien registeel ho-oh

We've said it before and we hope to keep saying it: getting some high-powered legends at uncommon rarity is just good! This time, we've got Registeel, Xerneas, Latios, Ho-Oh, Victini and Wo-Chien. We also get a bit more for the Ancient and Future factions. Gouging Fire, Flutter Mane and Koraidon join the Ancient lineup, while Iron Crown and more Iron Bundle and Miraidon variants add to Future. Nothing about them looks particularly game-changing for them, but after being burned so many times in the past by types that come and go quickly, it's fun to see some sustainability for once.

After a few years of generally trying to get people to play more evolutions, Surging Sparks offers some reinforcement to a Basic-based strategy. Lively Stadium boosts HP totals for them, while Gravity Mountain decreases HP for Stage 2s. Perhaps most importantly, Latias ex has an ability that removes retreat cost from all Basics. Old-heads like us have fuzzy feelings thinking about rotating around Scythers in those OG Haymaker builds, and the prospect of doing that again with all sorts of modern strategies just hits our nostalgia.

Given the theme, it's also sort of expected to see a boost for Tera Pokemon. The non-ex Terapagos is handy, as a colorless Basic with a one-energy attack to search for three different energies and load up a fighter all at once. New Trainers help quickly search for them and retrieve bulk energy of different types. Still, it feels like the design team still wants those three-energy attacks to be a high barrier to justify the powerful effects.

As Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket preps for its global launch in a few days, we're intensely curious about the future of the original game. The flash of Surging Sparks, with its much-loved cover star, will probably do quite well this holiday. But what about after that? Stay tuned, we suppose!
