Last night on Japanese television, there was a three-hour special to rank the hundred most popular video games of all time as voted by over 50,000 people in Japan.

Since this poll has such a huge sample, the TV Asahi results are probably a fairly accurate barometer of people's current gaming tastes in the country.

Some of the best city-building games on PC are going cheap on Steam

There are plenty of great city-building games on our home platform, and a bunch of them are going cheap as part of Steam's ongoing winter sale. So, if you're in the mood to establish your own fledgling city - or settlement - and watch it flourish, now might be a good time to see what's out there.

Tropico 6, Limbic Entertainment's 2019 city builder, puts you in charge of large archipelagos as el presidente, and you'll get to decide whether you're going to be a feared dictator of Tropico or a more benevolent leader overseeing a peaceful, prosperous era for the island state. The game builds on the series with new transportation and infrastructure-building options, a "revised" research system, an election speech feature, and online multiplayer for up to four players. It's currently half-price on Steam in the winter sale, making it £17.49 / $19.99 as of writing, and there are a bunch of different editions and bundles with discounts up to 65% on the store page if you're keen to browse.

Frostpunk, 11 bit studios' 2018 city builder, brings a big survival twist to the genre. You're in charge of the last city remaining on earth in the wake of a volcanic winter that's devastated the alternative late-19th century world.

This Stardew Valley mod makes managing your inventory way easier

It's probably safe to say that, while it's a useful and challenging gameplay mechanic, inventory management is not always the most thrilling aspect of an otherwise great game. As Stardew Valley fans know well, managing slots crammed full of goods is an important part of growing a flourishing farm, but it can take some work to get all your stuff where it needs to be. Handily, a new Stardew Valley mod helps to make it a breeze.

Creator gaussfire's aptly named Convenient Inventory mod adds some new features to the player's inventory, which makes keeping on top of it all a lot easier. As the modder describes, managing your backpack full of materials and other goodies becomes a bit of a repetitive process after a while: "open chest, deposit items, close chest, open chest, deposit items, close chest, open chest, deposit items, close chest..." and so on. But, the modder proffers a handy alternative: "What if you could stow away all the items taking up space in your backpack, instantly, while keeping the important ones?"

The mod adds a new feature that lets you quick stack to nearby chests, which shows up as a new button in the inventory UI. Hit that, and you'll send your items to - yep, you guessed it - chests lying around within a certain range (assuming they've got capacity). It's not clear what this range is by default, but it seems the mod's config options let you set this yourself in terms of number of tiles from the player character.

Valve reveals the biggest Steam games of 2021, and Valheim's been a hit

Just ahead of the new year, Valve has revealed the biggest Steam games of 2021. Broken down into categories such as top sellers, most-played, and new releases among others, the rundown gives us some good insight into what's been a hit with PC players over the past year. While there are plenty of the usual performers about, there are also some indie game breakouts in the mix.

Viking game Valheim is one such example. The plucky indie hit from developer Iron Gate has made it into the 'platinum' section of Steam's 100 top-selling games, which is "measured by gross revenue". That puts it among some hefty company, being one of 12 games in the section which also includes regulars such as CS:GO, PUBG, Dota 2, Grand Theft Auto V, Rainbow Six Siege, and Apex Legends.

This means Valheim has naturally landed in the platinum slice of top new releases by gross revenue, but it's also earned itself a top-tier place in Steam's most-played of 2021, having hit a peak player count of over 200,000 in the past year. The real number is significantly beyond this, as SteamDB records that the game hit a peak of just over half a million concurrent players back in February. Phwoar.
