System Shock Remake dev wants to revive another forgotten FPS classic

No One Lives Forever. 24 years later, the name's inherited an unfortunate irony - if you want to play Monolith's classic FPS game, or its sequel, A Spy in H.A.R.M.'s Way, you can't. For all intents and purposes, one of the most inventive and well-loved shooters of the early '00s is dead and buried, unavailable on Steam, GOG, or anywhere else, and seemingly doomed to be abandoned. Not everyone, however, has forgotten about NOLF. Nightdive, the burgeoning studio behind the System Shock Remake, the recent Star Wars Dark Forces remaster, and dozens of revivals and relaunches of true blue PC classics, is eager to bring No One Lives Forever back. The developers' "white whale," according to director of business development Larry Kuperman, in an exclusive interview with PCGamesN. Reporting from GDC in San Francisco, Nightdive explains how the intricacies and obstacles of NOLF's potential comeback could almost themselves be the basis for a spy thriller.

How to play Minecraft snapshots – snapshot 24w12a

How do you install and play a Minecraft snapshot? These snapshots are the very first iteration of Minecraft updates, and are a way for Mojang to test out bug fixes, technical changes, and new mechanics before officially rolling them out. Anyone with the Java edition of the creative game can try these features without any risk to your current world, so let's find out how to be the first to try the next big Minecraft update.

During Minecraft Live each year, the next big Minecraft update is revealed to the community. In past years, we've had the likes of the Caves and Cliffs update, The Wild Update, and the Trails and Tales update - each of them overhauling the base game with new Minecraft biomes, blocks, and mobs. Since these updates come with so much new content, they need to be tested out first, and that's where Minecraft snapshots come in. Use them to test out new experimental features before anyone else, and feedback to Mojang if you have any issues. It's a win-win situation.

How to fix Helldivers 2 friend request not working

Having trouble inviting friends to your game in Helldivers 2? So far, Helldivers 2 has had its fair share of bugs and errors, though most have been ironed out, and the game continues to get updates, players are still having trouble inviting friends on different platforms to their game.

Arrowhead has confirmed they are working on a fix for the issue players are having with inviting friends in Helldivers 2, with the latest patch 1.000.103 not solving the issue. The bug itself prevents PC and PS5 players from accepting friend requests, stopping them playing together. There is however, a workaround that we've found that bypasses the screen where you send friend requests to cross-platform players.

Dragon's Dogma 2 review – a great RPG, just not on PC

Among countless soulslikes and nondescript action-RPGs, Dragon's Dogma 2 stands as a game from another time. It's de rigueur to point to the latest open-world game and draw parallels to Elden Ring or Breath of the Wild, but Capcom's sequel is closer to how Neverwinter Nights exists in my childhood memories, calcified in rose-tinted nostalgia. For many, that niche was likely filled by Baldur's Gate 3 last year, but there's something to be said for Dragon's Dogma's drab medieval fantasy that echoes a bygone era. Dragon's Dogma 2 is closer to a reimagining than it is a sequel, the full realization of all that game director Hideaki Itsuno was trying to achieve with Dragon's Dogma back in 2012. It's a sentiment that's echoed by its main menu, curiously bereft of a number. Instead, Capcom delivers a world that's both different and yet very much the same.

Alone in the Dark x-ray puzzle solution

How do you solve the x-ray puzzle in Alone in the Dark? Alone in the Dark takes place in Derceto Manor, a "home for the mentally fatigued". It's only natural, then, that there's a lot of therapy talk and medical references -  and the classic x-ray puzzle.

Down in the rather disturbing hospital basement of the Alone in the Dark manor, you must put the pieces of an x-ray together to receive part of a statue to be used in a later puzzle. You don't actually use the x-ray itself, and I'm not entirely sure how it magically conjures up a physical item, but those are questions best left unasked in the survival game. One that is worth asking, though, is just how to solve this Alone in the Dark x-ray puzzle.

This article's headline is the characterisation of Everdeep Aurora given to me by publisher Ysbryd Games, but bizarrely enough, it reminded me initially of Bloodborne. A 2D platformer from Nautilus Games, Everdeep Aurora begins on the surface, where a ruptured crimson moon fills the sky with blazing meteors. That menacing moon is the first hint of Bloodborne, obviously. The second is the lamp-lit, locked-up house to one side, whose unseen occupant tells you to get lost, adding that they don't believe all this crazy talk about the apocalypse.

I thought at once of the wealthier residents of Yharnam, feasting and laughing hysterically behind the shutters of their fancy townhouses on the night of the Hunt. There are no pitchfork-wielding mobs or werewolves stalking the vicinity, however. But there is a frog by a campfire, who tells you that everybody else has sought shelter underground, and hands you a drill so you can follow them.

One of the most controversial and often-cited criticisms of modern AI systems is that they're built from, and dependent on, the stolen work of other people. It's far from the only criticism people have of this new technology, which might make us wonder exactly why anyone wants it in the first place. Today, I'd like to talk about some of the brighter futures that might come out of generative AI for us, as well as why the path toward them might be a tricky one to walk cleanly.

Dragon's Dogma 2 is an RPG of many admirable qualities. I'm especially attached to my Arisen's current pair of Pawns, one of whom speaks with the wonderfully stretched intonations of a pitch-shifted Matt Berry. Sadly, none of its achievements pertain to technical fidelity. While decent-looking, Dragon's Dogma 2 takes some serious hardware to maintain consistently smooth performance, with lowered quality settings lending only the most limp-wristed of helping hands.

DLSS and FSR 3 upscaling are more effective, but this is one game where powering through the worst of its stuttering and framerate drops will take more than a musclebound graphics card. Not for the first time with an RE Engine game, Dragon's Dogma 2 appears severely CPU-limited, so it really does demand a fully-upgraded rig to ward off sluggishness – especially at higher resolutions.

Improving performance isn't a completely hopeless endeavour, but besides the FPS wobbles, there are some settings oddities that need navigating as well. I'll cover all that and more in this guide; even if we can't fix Dragon's Dogma 2 ourselves, at least we can better understand its strangeness.

You know when you remember a game really fondly and instead of ageing alongside you, it becomes more modern in memory? The Dragon's Dogma 2 experience is, essentially, how I remember its predecessor Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen. To me, DD2 feels like a remaster of the first, except it looks nicer, is more expansive, and features some rejigs to things like your AI pals.

Not that any of this is a bad thing! In fact, DD2's closeness to the original makes it just as much of a joy as the first, where your grand adventure isn't only grander, it's still at the whims of a world governed by chaotic physics and the passage of time. Quirks remain, for good and bad, but ultimately this is an RPG where you make travel plans and the game does it best to dash them. It never gets old.

So it's great news that almost four years after Sega stopped selling Obsidian's fascinating spy thriller RPG Alpha Protocol on Steam due to music rights expiring, it has returned to sale on GOG. I'm always surprised that Alpha Protocol hasn't reached serious cult classic status because, as much as parts are distinctly wonky, the globetrotting sneak-o-shooter fizzes with ideas for intense dialogue, branching plot, and reputation systems with consequences. You do feel like a spy going up against the world, backed up only by shifty allies and a ridiculous pair of giant sunglasses.

Honkai Star Rail Gallagher Attacks

A new article uploaded to HoYolab shares more details on the attacks and skillset of upcoming 4* character Gallagher, set to arrive with Honkai: Star Rail's update 2.1. Gallagher is a Fire-element character who treads the Path of Abundance, meaning he performs the role of a healer.

Gallagher's kit is simple but with an offensive focus, with the usual basic attack and a skill that immediately heals its target. His ultimate is where things get interesting, however, as it damages all enemies and applies the besotted debuff. This debuff is part of Gallagher's talent and increases the break damage an enemy receives, as well as restoring the health of anyone who attacks them. Upon using his talent Gallagher's next basic attack also gets upgraded to Nectar Blitz, which reduces the target's attack stat. Finally, his technique engages an overworld enemy and inflicts fire damage and the besotted debuff once combat starts.

HoYoverse has also discussed some of the optimizations set to come to Honkai: Star Rail in Version 2.1, including several quality of life improvements. The company also shared lore details on the entities known as 'Emanators', as well as the names of several possible or confirmed figures who hold that position.

Gallagher and his drinks-based attacks are set to become available in Honkai: Star Rail's Version 2.1 on March 27, 2024. Honkai: Star Rail itself is immediately available on PC, PS5, and mobile devices.

Azur Promilia Pre-registration

Azur Lane developer Manjuu Games revealed its next project is the fantasy RPG Azur Promilia, with pre-registration available now. There is currently no release date nor any platforms listed for the game, though the developer's previous game was solely for mobile devices.

The game appears to fuse the combat and exploration gameplay of games like Genshin Impact with the collectable creature management of Palworld. While the announcement trailer mostly shows off the game world's vistas and characters, the gameplay footage also released seems to show character switching and party composition, combat, and the ability to set creatures (called Kibo) to work gathering resources. Also shown are flying mounts, which could make exploration significantly easier, and boss battles with special attacks. The official website also shows a look at some of the characters that may be playable in the game, such as Nono the diminutive adventurer and kibo creatures like the Cabbird.

You can watch the Azur Promilia announcement trailer below:

And see around 12 minutes of gameplay here:

Meanwhile, Manjuu's previous game Azur Lane received a crossover event with Senran Kagura back in November, 2024, adding 7 new crossover characters to the game. Koei Tecmo also announced it would be producing a figure of the Dead or Alive character Marie Rose, based on her appearance in another Azur Lane crossover event.

There is currently no release date for Azur Promilia, but pre-registration is available on the official website.

Asgard's Wrath 2 Will Be Free With Meta Quest 3 for Longer

Meta announced that people will have more time to claim a free copy of the game Asgard's Wrath 2 for buying a Meta Quest 3. The offer was originally only covering up through headsets purchased in January 2024 and activated by February 2024, but now the offer lasts until June 30, 2024.

Here's how it works. Someone first must buy a Meta Quest 3. That applies to the 128GB model that is $499 or the 512GB one that is $649. After that, go to the product page for it on the company's storefront. Instead of showing the normal $59.99 price, you will be able to see an "install" option. Do that, and you'll "purchase" and get the free game.

While thisis a sequel to Asgard's Wrath, you don't need to have played the original. The introduction catches people up with what's going on. After a brief summary, you're sent after Loki and deal with different other gods along the way. There are even open world elements and you can bolster your relationships with certain allies.

Asgard's Wrath 2 is available for the Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro, and it is free with Meta Quest 3 headset purchases until June 30, 2024.

2.1 Honkai: Star Rail QOL Changes Target Assignments, Light Cones

Before every major Honkai: Star Rail patch, HoYoVerse goes over quality of life (QOL) changes, and Assignments, Light Cones, Relics, and Simulated Universe will all be optimized. All of the changes come at the end of March 2024.

Some of the smaller adjustments are quick changes that aren't too in-depth. The Honkai: Star Rail Assignments change will be a time-saver. If you are going to be repeating the same ones, then someone can click once to claim all rewards, then click a second time to send the same characters out on the same assignments for the same amount of time again. Previously, you had to do this one-by-one for each assignment. Likewise, the Relics inventory going up by 500 to 2,000 will allow people to wait longer before sorting and sacrificing ones they may not use.

When it comes to Light Cones, that feature seems to have the most QOL changes coming in Honkai: Star Rail 2.1. Four-star Light Cones will automatically be included in salvaging unless you lock them, and it will be possible to lock all of one particular four-stars at once by selecting the option. You will also be able to superimpose them more quickly, with batch auto-add for them. Finally, you can sort all Light Cones by the Path they belong to.

Finally, the Simulated Universe change will make it easier to get all of the first-clear rewards at once. This means you won't need to go through a run that is far below your current Equilibrium and character level. What would happen is if you clear a higher level difficulty first, like III, you would also get the earlier ones from I and II.

This is one of two looks into Honkai: Star Rail ahead of the update. The other went over a concept in-game. There are Emanators, which are emissaries of the Aeons for different paths, and HoYoVerse explained more about them.

Honkai: Star Rail is available for the PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and the 2.1 update will arrive on March 27, 2024.

Dragon's Dogma 2

When Dragon's Dogma released in 2012, I immediately picked up a copy at a local GameStop. I was looking for ways to pass the time, and had seen the boyfriend of a friend play it briefly on their PlayStation 3 when I had visited. It looked interesting enough, and so I thought I'd give it a spin. Dragon's Dogma easily became one of my favorite action RPGs of all time, if not one of my favorite fantasy titles, due to its inspired use of European fantasy and the myth-making around dragons. I loved the scenario, I loved the gameplay, and I loved the world. I was thrilled to see Dragon's Dogma 2 announced, in awe of what I was shown and what I played during several preview sessions. But did Dragon's Dogma 2 live up to the expectations I had foolishly set for myself? The answer is yes, and then some.

Dragon's Dogma 2 throws the player into the thick of things immediately, but does so to the benefit of the player. You assume the role of the Arisen, a figure that can control and form bonds with Pawns (beings from another dimension). Your avatar has no real recollection of who they are. The game uses this as a way to introduce players to the world, explaining the role of the Pawns, the region you reside in, and the current socio-political climate between two major powers as a new Sovran has been made the ruler of Vernworth. I am a sucker for low fantasy settings, even more so if there is some kind of political intrigue involved, and Dragon's Dogma 2 didn't disappoint. I attended masquerades to learn about the new (false) Sovran. I traveled to Melve to recover some of my lost memories, unearthing who I was before escaping the mines of the volcanic island. I met with the captain of the city guard who hoped to reinstate me as the rightful ruler of the kingdom. And there was so much more I could do alongside this to further unearth the events that lead to my imprisonment and falsified death.

You can choose to engage and unravel the political scheming of the Queen Regent Disa and the tenuous relationship between Vernworth and the Beastren capital of Bakbattahl, or you can ignore this for the most part to explore and engage with the world at will. Dragon's Dogma 2 allows you to chart your own course, outside of a few mandatory story quests you can choose to undertake on your own time. Each of primary locales are culturally distinct, with Vernworth ascribing to all of the trappings of European low fantasy, with knights in steel plate and all. On the other hand, Bakbattahl resides in the southern desert. The large city is made of smooth, red-brown stone with its trappings smacking of Orientalism, what with long pipes and ornate rugs found in just about every establishment. The aesthetics of Southwestern Asia and North Africa are solely used as set dressing for the most part, but unlike other modern contemporaries, the populations of these cities are diverse and do feature people of color alongside their Beastren counterpart. (They exist in the clearly central European inspired city of Vernworth as well.) Vague commentary on racism between the two populations does exist in side content, along with the enslavement of Pawns by the sorcerers of Bakbattahl outside of their general treatment. For example, the Empress of Bakbattahl seeks to create equal footing for Pawns to help combat the discrimination they face. But exploring this narrative thread, among others, only takes place away from the main story. A lot of the meat of the game is sequestered away in this side content, which may leave players confused when it comes later events in the game and certain characters end up appearing in more prominent roles.

I ended up engaging a lot with the side content Dragon's Dogma 2 had to offer. This is mostly because I was concerned about getting locked out of side-content and missing optional Vocations (which is the game's job system), like the Mystic Spearhand and Magick Archer. I ended up accepting just about any quest I could find. The natural progression of some of these quests, at least in terms of where your final destination is, brought me to smaller settlements littered around the map. One of the first missions I chose to do involved helping an Elven Archer acquire a human-made bow. From there, he asked that I meet with him in some nearby ruins so that he could learn from me, as I was also an Archer at the time, and finally complete his coming of age ceremony.

On the way, I was waylaid by bandits, swooped upon by griffins and harpies, and rushed by minotaurs sometimes all at once. Dragon's Dogma 2 is packed with random encounters, almost to the point of being annoying if you are ill-equipped and underprepared. You will absolutely run into encounters with goblins, wolves, and ogres while wandering during the day, as the reappearance of the Dragon and the crowning of a new Sovran has caused monsters to become more aggressive. Also, the game is not shy about throwing some of the most difficult random encounters your way, even at lower levels. That said, it does get a lot easier later on, especially if you grind out gear and levels. I actually wish the game was a bit harder, but I was also around level sixty when beating it and owned the best gear I could afford and upgrade.

After helping the Archer, I met up with him again. This led to my getting entangled with his family and aiding him in saving his sister. Which led to a further entanglement with his family, as both he and his father fell in love with me. I was a little awkward when both came knocking at my door for a date. If I hadn't chosen to help this NPC, it wouldn't have led me to other questlines in the world. The quests associated with the Archer's sister took me to Bakbattahl, which then had me traveling elsewhere on the map to create a natural sense of progression between these various questlines that also resulted in me picking up even more quests and accidentally unlocking one of the late-game Vocations by chance.

It all feels very intricate, but also very random at times, since getting to your objective does not force you to walk a specific path. You see, I had not continued the main quests, which meant I couldn't actually pass through the border at Rest Town to get to Bakbattahl with the use of a permit. No. I walked the entire length of the map to find a cave to get me around the border and into the desert region. I didn't have to get the permit to make it there and I probably shouldn't have been in Bakbattahl that early in the game, but the fact that Dragon's Dogma 2 allowed for me to make my way there through sheer will and perseverance was amazing. II wasn't until chatting with another Siliconera writer that there were quests that I undertook that could have various different outcomes from the ones that I had.

We were in wonder and awe as we shared stories with each other. Some had found secrets others hadn't or Vocations we had yet to unlock. It felt like talking with friends in the schoolyard, discussing our shared, yet different, experience with a game we'd been playing. One had found out how to unlock Magick Archer. Another had retraced their steps to find an item to appease a specific NPC. While the end results were mostly the same, how we approached these quests were wholly different either because of the path we took or the Vocation we had equipped at the time. And some Vocations are certainly better than others.

While my impression of the Mystic Spearhand during the preview events Capcom had invited me to were middling, it became increasingly clear to me that this Vocation was one of the best. As I continued to force my way through content I was clearly underequipped for, I spammed the Mirour Shelde skill to block my party from any incoming damage. This included dragon fire and any kind of stun or stagger damage that may have impacted my party of Pawns. I also managed to leap over some terrain that would have otherwise been impassable if I had not used one of the Mystic Spearhand skills to more or less clip over a wall. It became my go-to class. Even if I loved what Capcom did with the Thief, it meant removing most melee capabilities for the Archer as a result. That said, my Pawn party remained mostly the same, with mine functioning as a Warrior with tank Augments and at least one Pawn designated to the party Mage, since they are the only class that is capable of healing to any great degree. I would play around with that third Pawn slot, sometimes taking an Archer or Thief with me, but at the end I had recruited Batsu, a level forty-nine Sorcerer with the Metereon spell. She made everything a joke once she was able to get this cast off without interruption thanks to Mirour Shelde, and everything would evaporate before her in plumes of smoke and molten rock. Thank you to the Capcom employee that made Batsu. I owe you my life.

Pawns can be recruited through Riftstones that are found on the map, or just by encountering them as they wander from settlement to settlement. Some can be recruited entirely for free, but in the case of a Pawn like Batsu, they can be extremely costly. She cost around 999RC, which is the currency required to hire one of these allies. They don't deal in gold, but instead a unique currency that is gained from your Pawn accompanying other Arisen on their journey or by activating Riftstones on the map. I ended up acquiring quite a lot of it, so much so that I had an excess of 5,000RC by the end of my sixty hour playthrough. You can use RC on cosmetic items and what not, but I generally kept it for purchasing the service of powerful Pawns, because they are invaluable companions. Outside of what they can provide through their offensive capabilities, Pawns will remember what quests they have completed alongside their Arisen or other adventurers. Batsu, being as high level as she was, knew where most of my quest objectives were, what NPCs I'd need to talk to, or a rough approximation of chests in areas I was exploring. My own Pawn Liam would mention that he had learned about secret locations from his experience being recruited by another Arisen. Another Pawn I recruited had learned to throw enemies into the water or off cliffs to end combat quickly, so as I was leaping into combat with my daggers as a Thief, they were picking up goblins and chucking them into a nearby lake. The Pawn system is incredible, and Capcom improved upon it immensely.

The variety of things you can do, what you choose to complete, and how you choose to complete tasks reminds me of Baldur's Gate III, just more fleshed out. Things seem to have longer lasting consequences. You can deceive NPCs and secret away rewards for yourself through the use of forgeries, or even save a life by keeping ancient and forbidden tomes from them. You can glean information by reading documents located in the castle itself by sneaking in disguised as a guard, through sulking in the shadows, or even other means that rely on Dragon's Dogma 2's intricate NPC relationship web.. While all paths lead to similar end results, the journey there is vast and winding. There are some choices I've made that I knew ended up impacting certain events in the late-game, but on a second playthrough I'm going to see what inaction or a more thorough investigation will bring. The scope of the game is incredible, and given that it is a true open world experience is a technical marvel.

I did experience some hiccups however, as entering Vernworth dropped my FPS to a staggering 5FPS until it eventually stabilized. The game itself can also be rough around the edges, especially with how your Pawns choose to climb over rocks and navigate more dangerous paths. They will sometimes stumble and fall to their death (if there is water below, as no one in this game can swim), or be knocked unconscious. The user interface, as gorgeous as it is, did result in some eye strain. One of my eyes was blood-shot after a particularly long session due to the narrowness of the serifed font. These are things to take into consideration at the very least, even if I did have a fantastic time with the game, and affected my scoring.

There are still so many things I have left to do in Dragon's Dogma 2. I have yet to uncover the full extent of the Queen Regent's schemes, learn more about the Empress the people of Bakbattahl love so much, or solve the Sphinx's riddles. But these are things I can do on a second playthrough, or even a third, as I take what I've learned with me. Dragon's Dogma 2 feels vast in a way that no other game has in a very long time. It reminds me of the best of the original Dragon's Dogma, with traces of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind weaved into it. It's an incredible low fantasy epic ripe with political intrigue, should you choose to engage with it, and a fully realized world that leaves the right questions unanswered.

One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 Garp and Rayleigh, Join Roger as DLC

The final characters for the One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 Character Pack 6 DLC are Monkey D Garp and Silvers Rayleigh. They'll appear alongside Gold Roger in the Legend Dawn Pack on March 28, 2024

This announcement was accompanied by two brief trailers showing the characters fighting. The first showed Rayleigh using his sword to attack a horde of enemies. The combo then ended with all of the stunned foes dropped in front of him.

With the Garp segment, it showed how he attacks with his bare fists. The combo highlighted here constantly moves him forward, then ends with him knocking back opponents.

This is the last of the Character Pass 2 additions. The first pack was The Battle of Onigashima, and the second was One Piece Film: Red. Each one added three new characters to use. The bonus for buying all the packs together in the pass also offered a Trafalgar D Water Law costume inspired by his Onigashima Battle appearance.

One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 is available for the PS4, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, and the Legend Dawn DLC Pack brings Gold Roger, Silvers Rayleigh, and Monkey D Garp arrive on March 28, 2024.
