Few games make themselves as hard to love as Starfield. I say that as someone who's sunk tons of hours into it - and continues to do so.      Acer Predator GM712 Projector review

The Acer Predator GM712 is a confusing product to shop for. At the time of writing, there are two GM712s - the slightly cheaper MR.JUX11.001 and the pricier, newer MR.JUX11.002 I'm testing in this review. The main difference is that the 002 offers variable refresh rate (VRR) which I'll get onto below.

These two models are still available at retail stores simultaneously, and though the 02 is likely to replace the 01 entirely once stock runs out, the two products fall into different classes because of their prices. That's a shame because the GM712 in its 01 configuration is spot on.

At under $1,000/£1,000, 4K with a 60 Hz refresh rate, fantastic color reproduction, and low latencies make it an incredibly appealing pick - easily one of the best gaming projectors. Especially for a pricing bracket that sorely needs some decent 4K gaming projector love. But what of the new GM712? Is it improved? I've tried it for gaming and streaming to find out.

For me, sandbox games are never better when there's an inherent chaos about to erupt at any given second. In a literal sandbox that might be anything from a kid burying a freshly-laid turd like a mischievous cat ready to be stepped on by an unsuspecting trespasser, gathering handfuls of grit to lob in a another kids' eyes or swallowing a bunch of sand (hopefully turd-free) in pursuit of alchemising diamonds in their stomach. There don't seem to be turds of any kind in upcoming sandbox RPG Streets of Fortuna, but that's about the only thing that this ambitious "megasim" appears to be missing in its sprawling go-anywhere, do-anything open world.

I've been trying to figure out what "scoundrelly" means in a videogame context. Whatever it means, Han Solo homage Star Wars Outlaws ain't it. Here are some basically non-scoundrelly, very Ubisofty things I did during my 60 minute with Massive Entertainment's open world adaptation at Summer Game Fest this week: climbed around rectangular arrangements of yellow handholds. Shot at baddies over rectangular cover layouts. Collected 7/10 pieces of scrap with some Star Wars flavour text that unlocked an item recipe of some kind. Deployed my chibi Chewbacca sidekick Nix to distract Imperials with cute wiggles and belly boops so I could sneak behind them. Got discovered sneaking behind them and murdered them all before one could run to a terminal and summon reinforcements. OK, maybe that last one is getting there.

Assassin's Creed has been threatening to go to Japan for so long that I think the idea has lost its thunder, but I'll admit to a squee of enthusiasm, during our first look at Assassin's Creed Shadows, when deuteragonist Naoe grappled onto the ceiling to allow a castle guard to pass innocently beneath. I was similarly tickled by the sight of her breathing through a bamboo pipe while swimming underwater, and I emitted a gentle hum of approval, like a smartphone switching on for the very first time, when she impaled a silhouette through a paper door. Respectable shinobing, for sure. Papa Tenchu would be proud.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater Collector's Edition Has Terrarium

Konami revealed the Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater Collector's Edition, and it actually allows someone to bring Snake home in a small terrarium. Pre-orders opened on June 10, 2024.

The standard copies of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater are $69.99, while the Collector's Edition is $199.99. There are five major bonuses, in addition to a PS5 or Xbox Series X copy of the game. To start, there are fox and Halo Jump patches. Both feature iconography from the game. People also get Snake's ID card lanyard. It makes it look like he's a scientist heading into Groznyj Grad Northeast. The aforementioned terrarium has him beside a tree, attempting to get his backpack down from a branch. Finally, there's a metal case to hold someone's copy of the game.

Here's how all that looks:

Konami also noted there will be a Tactical Edition for people to potentially pick up. That includes digital bonuses and the game. There's no price set for it yet.

Since Summer Game Fest 2024, Konami revealed a number of details about the game. For example, we learned more about the camera system. There was also a new gameplay trailer that let us see more of Snake.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater will come to the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC in 2024.

Xbox Games Showcase Perfect Dark

The June 2024 Xbox Games Showcase featured an impressive array of announcements for new games, and was arguably one of the best presentations of the entire Summer Game Fest season. However, it did show that Microsoft has yet to shake their biggest problem; the company loves announcing games more than releasing them.

I do think that Microsoft held an impressive Xbox Games showcase. More modern DOOM is a good thing. A new Perfect Dark is exciting for someone like me who spent hours on the N64 original. And the Indiana Jones fanboy in me is foaming at the mouth over The Great Circle. And then there are games like Avowed, Gears of War: E-Day and Fable, all of which are highly anticipated by fans of those franchises or developers. I can't think of anything that landed poorly.

But here's the problem. None of the games I just mentioned came with release dates. The showcase was a sea of generic 2025 launches, if a release window was provided at all. Indiana Jones and Avowed bucked the trend, but even then, both of those games just listed 2024 as the release window. They are both inevitably going to be big hitters for Microsoft, but they don't seem certain about where in the next six months they will appear.

Image via Microsoft

This is a trend for Microsoft. The company loves to release big blowout summer Xbox showcases full of impressive game announcements, all with vague release dates. However, watching several of them in a row, you start to notice the problem. This year's selection of games looks a lot like last year's. Avowed, Fable and South of Midnight were all major titles that got a focus in 2023, and here they are again, still unclear when they will release. In Fable's case, each time it appears we seem to be learning more about which British comic actors are joining the cast than how the game actually plays.

Those aren't the only games that returned in a similar manner. The latest showcase was the first time State of Decay 3 had been heard about since its original reveal four years ago. Perfect Dark was announced around the same time, although the only news that's emerged since has been rumors of a troubled development. And despite the four years that have passed, their return at the recent showcase didn't even feature a vague release window.

This is why it's hard to get too excited about what Microsoft presented in this showcase. Everything looked impressive but the whole time I was questioning when anyone would get to play anything on show. Will it be another four years until we hear about Perfect Dark again? Will Avowed and Indiana Jones quietly slip into 2025? It's all far too vague.

Image via Microsoft

Microsoft's first party Xbox lineup has been a problem for a while. 2023 would have been a quiet year were it not for Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda, who provided three of the four major releases, all in development before Microsoft entered the picture. Meanwhile the 2022 first-party lineup was almost exclusively Pentiment, a side project from Obsidian that reviewed well, but was hardly the kind of game to carry a major first-party lineup. For a company that's been steadily buying up the entire industry, it's odd to see how few games they release.

It's something Microsoft needs to address. Xbox Game Pass subscriptions are slowing down, console sales are trailing behind Sony at a rate of 5:1, and the higher-ups within Microsoft are starting to ask when that Activision purchase is going to start generating money instead of losing it.

Perhaps the problem is exacerbated by the parade of layoffs and studio closures Microsoft have been indulging in lately. Hi-Fi Rush was an exciting prospect at its shadow drop! The unceremonious closure of Tango that followed raises questions about who's next.

Sure, South of Midnight looks interesting, but can we guarantee that Compulsion won't be shuttered at a later date just because it's unlikely to sell millions of copies? Perfect Dark has been a hefty project and I'm concerned that expectations for it might be higher than The Initiative can deliver. None of these studios feel safe right now, so the entire showcase had a specter hanging over it. Sure, the games look cool, but even when they eventually release, will the people who made them get to do more later? Right now the answer feels like no.

Image via Microsoft

The latest Xbox Games Showcase was great on the surface but underneath, it's representative of a lot of Microsoft's current troubles. A lot of promises but very little delivery. Cool ideas that may or may not get to live up to their potential. And a vagueness and lack of consistent release strategy that feels out of place for a company with as many resources as Microsoft.

The June 2024 Xbox Games Showcase was fun, and I do enjoy a good flashy trailer done well. But if those flashy trailers don't then become real games we can play with our own hands, what's the point?

Honkai: Star Rail Apocalyptic Shadow and Divergent Universe Early Access Detailed

HoYoVerse offered more details about the Honkai: Star Rail Apocalyptic Shadow and Divergent Universe early access that will be present after the 2.3 update. The short of it is, after the new version arrives, people at Trailblaze Level 21 or higher can immediately access certain modes they normally would need to unlock via other means.

This is due to Finality's Vision. It can be found in the Travel Log. Once you go there, a Honkai: Star Rail player who meets the Trailblaze Level minimum can head into the Divergent Universe Simulated Universe mode or take part in the new Apocalyptic Shadow feature.

Both of these new elements are going to be new to the 2.3 update. Divergent Universe is a Simulated Universe mode not unlike the Swarm Disaster or Gold and Gears ones currently present in Honkai: Star Rail. Meanwhile, Apocalytic Shadow is a different mode that is along the same lines as Memory of Chaos and Pure Fiction. Like those two, it will have rotating phases with new challenges. The first is confirmed to last for six weeks.

Honkai: Star Rail is available for the PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and the 2.3 update appears on June 19, 2024.

I Worry About the Future of the Gears of War After E-Day

Now, when I talk about "the future" of the Gears of War series, I don't necessarily mean the newly announced Gears of War: E-Day game. Going back in time to seeing the world of Sera in peace and witnessing young Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago become friends through the crucible of a new war against an incomprehensible enemy sounds fascinating, and I totally understand why The Coalition took this opportunity. However, I worry about about the future of the series when we eventually get to continue the plot threads left hanging in Gears 5.

In a recent interview with The Coalition, the developers reassured fans of the series that they are "not retreating" from the storylines that started in the series games Gears of War 4 and continued in Gears 5. While this can sound comforting, I can't help but think that it will be a really long time until we see or even hear about a hypothetical Gears of War 6. When you consider how long video games take to develop and how expensive they are nowadays, I fear we might not see a resolution to the events and cliffhangers left in Gears 5, at least not in the way fans expect. The latest game in the Gears franchise shipped in September 2019, almost 5 years ago. With no announced date for Gears of War: E-Day, it could take a while for this new title to appear.

If things go swimmingly for The Coalition, a direct continuation of Gears 5 could take another four to five years to get greenlit and released. Unless the team is magically working on two titles at the same time (something which could be catastrophic when taking in account the massive financial risk), we could be talking about a direct sequel appearing sometime around 2030. That would be well over a decade after Gears 5. Of course, this is all hypothetical. But no matter the result, by the time we get to experience a direct sequel, it will have been way too long for audiences to keep the same level of interest than they had when the game originally came out.

Don't get me wrong, I am actually very excited to experience Gears of War: E-Day. I completely understand the allure of going back to the very origin of the series. Showing the overwhelming and terrifying threat of the Locust Horde in its heyday, when humanity had no tools to fight back against a never-before-seen enemy, is promising. I can't help but imagine how different it would be to play this game, compared to the action-focused romps of the original trilogy. The idea of combat encounters being more threatening than ever before for the series, a lower number of Locust drones feeling overpowering, compared to the hordes of enemies Marcus and the COG mowed down in the original trilogy could truly breathe new life into the franchise.

Of course, I'm not expecting the game to completely change genres into survival horror, although I wouldn't really mind it, but I keep wondering what new ideas this new scenario could bring. Seeing Marcus and Dom fight a single enemy in the reveal trailer and barely survive the encounter really fascinates me. From a narrative standpoint, seeing their relationship flourish in real time after both experienced unspeakable loss sounds right up my alley. Even seeing the creation of the iconic Lancer or Hammer of Dawn, among other memorable tools in the franchise, to successfully face the Locust excites me. But there's only so much The Coalition can do before they run out of material to cover for this prequel.

Once all it's said and done, I just can't imagine the future of the Gears of War franchise after E-Day. Once it's time to go back to the present, there will be a whole new generation of players to bring into the fold. Maybe revisiting the past with E-Day, and with the release of the rumored remaster of the original Gears of War trilogy, could bring a renewed interest into the franchise for old and new audiences alike. But that's hedging on too many bets at that point. And even if we end up seeing a continuation of the story of Gears 5, by that point it will be a completely different story from the one that started all the way back in 2016 with Gears of War 4.

The long development cycles, hyperinflated budgets, expectations for triple-A games, and constant layoffs are keeping the industry stagnant. Taking any type of risk is untenable for big name developers. That's why remakes, remasters, and looking at the past of once-popular series is safer and easier. There's no window for risk or experimentation in the triple-A market. And I worry that, with how long it takes to ship a game nowadays, the Gears of War franchise might not have much of a future after this detour to its past with E-Day.

Gears of War: E-Day is currently in development for the Xbox Series X and PC via Steam. There is no announced release date for the game yet.

Raditz in Dragon Ball Sparking Zero which is confirmed getting Japanese PC release simultaneously worldwide

Bandai Namco has announced the Japanese release dates for Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero. The game will appear in the country on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on October 10, 2024—a day earlier than the global release date announced at Summer Game Fest. However, the company also newly confirmed that Japanese PC players will be able to get Sparking Zero via Steam on October 11, 2024.

The latter revelation is massive in Japan because it marks a shift in Bandai Namco's policy of determining the release platforms for its games in the country. PC players in Japan have long criticized Bandai Namco and other prominent Japanese game companies for omitting PC releases of their games in their own country, even when the games are readily available to the rest of the world. This phenomenon is also known as "OmaKuni," which is short for "We are not selling this in your country."

In recent months, Bandai Namco has been taking steps to fix that discrepancy. In May 2024, it just made the Steam releases of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, FighterZ, and Xenoverse 2 available for purchase in Japan. While Sparking Zero will be available to Japanese PC players simultaneously with the rest of the world, the above games used to be unavailable in the country for a long time. However, not all Dragon Ball games on Steam have been made available, as Japanese players still cannot access the first Xenoverse and Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission as of June 2024.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero will appear first in Japan on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on October 10, 2024. The global release date that includes the PC version will fall on October 11, 2024. The latter release on Steam will also be available in Japan on the same day.

Kotobukiya to produce Metaphor ReFantazio figures of Gallica and Hulkenberg

Kotobukiya revealed that it will produce two new figures based on characters from Metaphor: ReFantazio, and the characters in question will be the guide fairy Gallica and the elf-like Roussainte knight Hulkenberg. No concept art for them was shown.

The company did not reveal more details about the figures, other than that they will be scaled down from the original character sizes. Kotobukiya also only showed the characters' artwork as taken from Atlus, so it will take quite a long time until it finishes their prototypes and puts them up for pre-orders.

Kotobukiya made the announcement first at the Atlus Fes, which was held in Akihabara on June 8-9, 2024. The company has since published a Japanese tweet on its official X account, which is also available to view right below and shows official Metaphor: ReFantazio Gallica and Hulkenberg art:

https://twitter.com/kotobukiyas/status/1800000680285102488?s=61

Metaphor: ReFantazio is set to be Atlus' next major release, as it is being worked on by key staff members behind Persona 3 through 5, such as the director Katsura Hashino, the illustrator Shigenori Soejima, and the composer Shoji Meguro. The company sold the first merchandise batch based on the game at the Atlus Fes. It also put up the first public demo build that has three playable modes at the physical event.

Kotobukiya will reveal more details about the Metaphor: ReFantazio figures of Gallica and Hulkenberg at a later time. Atlus will release the new fantasy RPG for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, and PC on October 11, 2024.
