The appetite for Valve to resurrect the scrapped Half-Life 2 Episode 3, or make a full Half-Life 3, so that Gordon Freeman's story can continue is ravenous. The fact that several years ago the series' chief writer, Marc Laidlaw, seemingly revealed a synopsis of what Half Life's next story beat may have been only rubs salt into the wound. PCGamesN Monday, November 11, 2024 12:29 PM Reality marches on. Games rise and fall. Today's darlings are tomorrow's footnotes. The number of truly timeless PC games is extremely small. Farmagia is an ambitious game. It's a dungeon crawler. It's a creature collector. It's a farming game. However, getting a combination like this right is a fine balance, and I'm not sure Marvelous achieves it.
The game is set in Felicidad, part of the underworld, where mages known as Farmagia use the power of monsters to fight. The world consists of five continents, each ruled by a member of an elite general squad known as the Oracion Seis. However, following the death of the supreme leader, one of these generals, Glaza, has risen to the throne and begun to implement a dictatorship. The other generals followed his plans, except Nares, who resisted. Her nation, Avrion, is now considered a nation of traitors and a civil war has broken out. You play as Ten, one of the Farmagia training under Nares in Avrion. During his training, war reaches his doorstep, and this kickstarts a journey to each continent with friends to defeat the other members of the Oracion Seis.
This is mostly achieved by dungeon crawling and fighting off the monsters in locations known as Mazes. You take a squad of monsters, known as Battle Buddies, who fight on your behalf. This might sound a little bit like Pokemon, but a more accurate description would be something that sits between Pikmin and The Wonderful 101.
You have four squads of Battle Buddy available to you – close range attackers, long range attackers, support units that cause buffs and debuffs, and formation types that aid with healing and protection. Each of these is represented by a monster type, and each of the face buttons on a controller sends them out to fight. You throw these monsters at enemies to gradually chip away at their health, although sometimes they can be fused together to form shields or larger attacks.
There's a potentially interesting combat system on show here, but the two comparisons I made above highlight the serious shortcomings with Farmagia's combat system. Pikmin is known for its strategic planning, where you have to manage your lil guys in a way that allows them to gather resources while not getting eaten in the process. The Wonderful 101 uses its large cast to generate new abilities that can be combined in creative ways, a style Platinum have perfected at this point.
Farmagia, by contrast, has painfully limited combat. Most monsters have a weakness that's clearly advertised with a picture of one of your team next to their health bar. While other monster types will do minimal damage, smaller monsters are obliterated by their weaknesses. Bigger enemies pose an actual threat, but the strategy for all of them boils down to pressing guard when the attack flash shows up, spamming whichever monster they're weak to and then hitting a powerful Legion Attack when their stamina runs out, then repeating the process until they're down.
This repetitive combat strategy isn't helped by how tedious the Mazes are to traverse. They're all on the same map, regardless of the continent or type of floor. You gain random abilities from Fairy Dens, none of which feel like they have any meaningful impact on combat. Every floor is just a gauntlet of enemies you beat in order to open the exit and move on.
But this isn't all Farmagia has to offer, as there are also farming elements and the ability to train and care for your Buddies. However, these elements suffer similar problems to the dungeon crawling.
Let's start with training. This is done by feeding your squads a specific type of food to boost individual stats, although feeding them too much in one go will reduce the effectiveness with each consecutive increase. However, you can only increase five stats before you have to wait for the game to provide you with the next food item at a specific point in the story. It's so basic and locked to progression that it could have been replaced with natural stat increases from winning battles instead.
Farming isn't much better. Take the most basic farming mechanics from the genre, and that's what Farmagia offers. You till the ground, plant some seeds and water them. Occasionally you need to clear out some weeds or debris. However, unlike other farming games where crops feel useful and essential to progress, Farmagia's crops are strange. They're all monsters that have to be grown like plants, although the vast majority do next to nothing.
Sure, the Buddies you take into battles can be grown, but most of the seeds you obtain from dungeons are Research Buddies. The purpose of growing these is to earn research points for upgrades, or growing three of them to unlock a special unite attack in battle. However, larger monsters, despite taking up more space and requiring more days to grow, earn the exact same number of points as the tiny ones, and the new battle forms for growing a trio are little more than cosmetic changes. There are some stat alterations, but these are miniscule percentage adjustments instead of anything game changing. Plus, once you've grown three of a kind, there's no reason to keep growing more of that monster type.
All three elements suffer the same problem: they are all undercooked. In trying to combine all these different gameplay styles, none of them individually got the development time they needed to be interesting or varied enough for the long term. Sometimes this can work if there's enough a symbiotic relationship between the three, but they all feel distant from each other. Combat lacks strategy and variety. Farming lacks purpose. The ranch could have been a post-battle stat screen. It all falls flat.
That said, the story and characters were enjoyable. The central story is a little cliched and many of its twists are predictable, but the character writing is strong enough to make it work. Ten and his friends have genuine rapport with each other, and there's plenty of humor to make them all likeable. It has the vibe of a good shonen anime, something that won't necessarily win awards for its writing but will keep you entertained all the same.
I also enjoyed the Elemental Spirits side quests, which was again driven by how good the character writing is. During the story, you have to befriend and form a pact with the Elemental Spirits of the land to aid you in your quest. Mechanically, it's just collecting items, defeating monsters or farming specific crops, but narratively, it's enjoyable. Each Spirit has a unique personality, one that you learn more about as your bond grows stronger. The first continent's Spirit is a motherly type who loves giving head pats, while another is a party girl that just wants to attend a grand feast. All of them are fun to spend time with.
Sadly, the charm of the writing doesn't prevent Farmagia from feeling mediocre overall. It's repetitive, disjointed and half-formed. If you want a game that better combines adventuring and farming, Marvelous already have an excellent alternative in the form of Rune Factory.
Farmagia is out now for Nintendo Switch, PC and PS5.

Back when the major November 2024 Fields of Mistria update was announced, a new festival was teased, and now we know it is the Shooting Star Festival. This will be a Summer seasonal event, and the new details suggest it is also one with a special element for those pursuing one of the game's love interests.
NPC Studio shared a gift highlighting what to expect from the Shooting Star Festival in Fields of Mistria. The player character is in the town square talking to Eiland. He first brings up that the Shooting Star Festival is coming that month. He also mentions the age of the event, suggesting its been happening for centuries. As the announcement noted that we get to invite our love interest to watch shooting stars at the summit, Eiland also hints nobody ever asked him to do so.
Here's how that scene looks.
As the summit area is an overview that players need to unlock by ranking up the town and making progress, it seems like the Fields of Mistria Shooting Star Festival is one some people might not see in their first year. As such, those playing the early access build will either want to be prepared for next summer to roll around or work hard on building up the museum's collections or assisting with mainline quests.
Fields of Mistria is available in early access for PCs now, and the first major update patch will launch on November 18, 2024.

Both the VShojo English and Japanese social media accounts shared an image teasing five possible new Vtubers for the company, and it seems like they could be people from or in Japan. There's no text alongside it to provide additional hints. It's only accompanied by the #VShojo hashtag.
Here is the teaser art. It seems to show Tokyo, with the Rainbow Bridge ahead of Tokyo Tower. There are five portals open in the sky. At the moment, one silhouette for what may be a new Vtuber appears on the far right side of the image. There seems to be enough room for four more to also appear in the foreground alongside that person.
Back in July 2024, VShojo announced its branch in Japan was looking for new Japanese Vtubers to join the company. At the moment, the two main representatives there are Kson and Henya the Genius. Amemiya Nazuna used to be a part of the company, but announced s
However, we could also eventually see new members who aren't tied to that branch. In July 2024, auditions also opened for the English branch. Around that time, Zentreya also announced that she would like to fund a Vtuber debut for a newcomer.
We'll know more about the new potential VShojo Vtubers in the near future, with both of the social media accounts being the best way to track updates on reveals and identities.

Bandai revealed that it will release new acrylic stands featuring heroines from Konami's Tokimeki Memorial via its Gashapon vending machines. The former has also opened early bird sales for the products via the Gashapon Online website.
This collection will feature a total of 14 heroines from the first-ever Tokimeki Memorial entry. Even though Konami is already working on the Nintendo Switch remaster Forever With You Emotional which will include a more modern art style option, these stands will use the pixel art used in the original PC Engine release in 1994 and the PlayStation 1 port in 1995.
People can spend 400 yen to obtain a random item in the early bird sales. While most of the characters will have the same drop rate of 7.2%, Yoshio Saotome will have a slightly lower rate at just 6.4%.
Here is the full list of Tokimeki Memorial characters featured in this lineup:
The early purchases for Tokimeki Memorial acrylic stands are available until December 1, 2024. Bandai will ship the products in late February 2025. The company will also release physical Gashapon machines featuring the lineup in late January 2025.

Bandai Namco took a week off last week, when it came to Bleach Rebirth of Souls character reveals, but now it confirmed that Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck, also known as Nel, will be a playable fighter. A first trailer showed up highlighting a handful of her moves in the title.
Nel will appear in her adult form in the game. Her Zanpakuto is her Resurreccion Gamuza, which we see her wield in her introduction and during her fight. The video also introduces her as the Former Tres Espada. After showing who she is, she uses the Spiritual Pressure Move Viento de Esperanza. That's followed by her Signature Move Cadena. Before getting into the final attacks, we see her call upon her brothers Pesche Guatiche and Dondochakka Birstanne to use her Spiritual Pressure Move 2 Cero Sincretico.
Here's the full look at Nel:
Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck isn't the only Arrancar to appear in Bleach Rebirth of Souls. Ulquiorra Cifer will be playable too. Given this, it seems possible we could eventually see Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez revealed as a playable character as well.
Here are all of the confirmed Bleach Rebirth of Souls characters to come up before Nel did.

Chinese law enforcement arrested two NetEase executives and nine employees from the company over alleged money laundering. According to reports, they laundered up to $139 million through contracts made with almost 30 business partners. [Thanks, Dexterto!]
This is an ongoing investigation, which means not a lot of information has been released just yet. We do know that NetEase fired the nine employees who were involved in this case. Some of them are no longer in custody, and one of them has taken to social media to plead their innocence. The police have arrested Xiang Liang, one of the executives, in order to investigate the allegations of money laundering and bribery within the company.
NetEase announced it launched an internal investigation as well, marking the second one since September 2023. Some employees have shared that their screenshots at work are the compliance advertisements that the company's Procurement Compliance Committee put together. Zhang Yijia, who was a manager at Tencent, resigned after allegations of corruption as well, so these sorts of issues are not unique to NetEase.
NetEase is one of the bigger tech companies in China. Since its founding in 1997, it's worked on games, advertisements, e-commerce, and e-mail services. Some of the games it worked on include Once Human, Marvel Rivals, and Identity V. It recently announced Where Winds Meet, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, and Project Mugen as well. That's not even including the development studios it owns, such as Quantic Dream and Grasshopper Manufacture.
More information on the case will appear in the future as the investigation proceeds.

Square Enix has announced that it will hold two new time-limited events at its FFXIV-themed Eorzea Cafe outlets in Japan. The events will run from December 2024 until early February 2025.
Each event will feature different menus. All entries in the list use Gil as currency, although people can pay the exact same amounts in Japanese yen instead. The Starlight Celebration will feature a Black Truffle Risotto at 1,540 Gil (~$10) and French Toast at 1,210 Gil (~$7.85), while the Heavensturn menu will include a Salmon Donburi with grated radish at 1,430 Gil (~$9.30).
The two events will launch at staggered times. The Starlight Celebration will appear first from December 10, 2024, until January 31, 2025. The Heavensturn theme will follow suit from January 1 until February 3, 2025. That also means the entirety of January 2025 will be the ideal time for people to visit the cafe, as both events will run concurrently.
The new FFXIV limited-time menu will be available at Final Fantasy Eorzea Cafe in the Pasela Resorts outlets in Akihabara, Tokyo, and Namba, Osaka. The new meals will take inspiration from the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV, which is available worldwide on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Xbox Series X|S. Square Enix will release the Patch 7.1 update for the game on November 12, 2024.

More information has come out about the 2025 remake of To Heart, including its platforms, release window, and aesthetic. Aquaplus announced the game will feature full 3D for the models and cutscenes, and the characters look more modern in comparison to the original's very 1990s art style. [Thanks, Denfaminico!]
This information first appeared at the Aquaplus 30th anniversary event. For starters, the new To Heart will come out on the Nintendo Switch and Windows PC via Steam. While we don't know the exact date yet, we can expect it to come out some time in Spring 2025. YURiKA's "Feeling Heart" will be the opening song for the game, and we already know two members of the cast. Kana Ichinose will voice Akari and Hina Youmiya will voice Multi.
Here are some more screenshots from the game:
Information on a new To Heart project in 2025 first appeared in May 2024. At the time, there wasn't a lot of information on what it could be. Another franchise that Aquaplus stated would see new content was Utawarerumono. During the same 30th anniversary event we learned about the release window and platforms for To Heart, Aquaplus showed off Utawarerumono: Shiro e no Michishirube, which will be the latest entry in the series.
The To Heart remake will come out on the Nintendo Switch and Windows PC in Spring 2025.
