Fantasy smithing sim Blacksmith Master forges itself a release date

There's something about a smithy that draws me in like a moth to a furnace. The smell of charcoal, the hammering of steel on steel, the unbearable heat from the forge. It's all wrapped up in a feeling that just seems right, and fantasy smithies even more so - given how they form the backbone of many epic narratives. That's why Blacksmith Master is such an evocative proposition, and thankfully it's launching soon.

However, 1047's CEO Ian Proulx says that while he acknowledges the resemblances, he is confident that Splitgate 2 will continue the original's legacy of being a breath of fresh air in the FPS genre.

There's definitely a trend picking up pace in gaming right now, one that's quietly building traction. Baroque wilderness-builder Nightingale has not been doing brilliantly since Ed Thorn described the launch early access version as "a numbers grind disguised as a gaslamp survival game". We had moderately high hopes for it before the early access release - I personally enjoy the fairytale setting, with its pop-up Pucks and magic umbrellas, but I also think I've raised enough hovels on procedurally generated maps for one lifetime. Still, I'd quite like it to come good, if only so I can justify op-eds about Lewis Carroll, and I'm somewhat encouraged by what I've heard of the game's forthcoming Realms Rebuilt update.

Ichiban Kuji NieR: Automata 2B Bust Being Sold Outside Japan

Back in Japan in June 2024, Bandai Namco released an Ichiban Kuji NieR: Automata merchandise lottery that included a 2B Art Scale bust as its B prize. Now, retailers like Amazon and Entertainment Earth are selling that Ichibansho item separately for $69.99.

The 2B Art Scale bust is almost eight inches tall (20cm). It includes her head, shoulders, and upper chest. She's also wearing her typical outfit in it. The figure is designed as such that someone could choose to display her with her goggles on, or remove the wrap so that you can see her eyes.

Here are some closer photos of the item:

When it will arrive varies. Entertainment Earth noted that it expects the statue to appear sometime in October 2024. However, the Amazon product page included a November 1, 2024 release date.

2B is frequently used as an inspiration for new figures and merchandise based on the NieR: Automata series. For example, Kotobukiya announced a new ARTFX J figure of her back in July 2024. The acrylic blocks of different characters sold at Comiket 104 also included one of her among them.

NieR: Automata is available on the PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and Windows PC. There is also an anime adaptation that is available to stream via Crunchyroll. The chiban Kuji NieR: Automata 2B Art Scale bust is expected to ship outside Japan in October 2024 at the earliest.

Welcome to the Week in Review
Welcome
Pardon me while I shake off a bit of this jet lag and recount a week that was full of Google showing why it may, ultimately, be the one to triumph in the intensifying AI wars.

Ahem…. It seems like mere hours since I was sitting front-row at Made by Google in California to witness the rollout of four new phones, two smartwatches, and a set of earbuds, only to be confronted with 40 minutes of Generative AI. This was not a bad thing. Google Gemini on all those Pixel 9 phones (especially that awesome-looking Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold) is a good and possibly game-changing thing. I’ve never really had a conversation with an AI before where it didn’t mind me interrupting. Adding myself to group photos is, I found, a fun and useful idea, and I had no idea that all those screen shots that are filling up my phone could be turned into a trove of useful and accessible information.

The road ahead for Google and Gemini sounds, well, impressive. Researching with Gemini will not be like conducting a query with ChatGPT, because Gemini gets to rely on Google’s vast and amazing search-knowledge graph. Gemini Research isn’t ready yet, but it’ll be here soon enough.

It was almost enough to make me feel good about the future of AI and humanity, though I still have concerns, and I find that I’m not that good at explaining why we should all just chill out about it. The pace isn’t slowing down, and everyone is worried about us falling in love with our chatbots. I may send mine flowers, but love is not in my plans.

The Paris Olympics wrapped up and Sunday, and I do wonder if Samsung is as sad as I am that the games are over – all those athletes holding all those Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 phones is the sort of marketing most brands can only dream of.

As I think about a much-needed nap, I also wonder if Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which is finally streaming, will feel like a mashup of those just-ended Olympics and The Hunger Games. If it does, I am so here for it.
