League of Legends is so omnipresent that when something goes wrong with the game's functionality, it feels a bit like the lights have just gone out during a thunderstorm. Riot Games' long-running multiplayer game is meant to just work — to be online when players have a bit of free time to spend with it. Unfortunately, LoL is currently suffering unforeseen matchmaking issues that have made it impossible to get into a round until Riot is able to put out a fix.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Shoryu Ramen Promotion Heading to England

Square Enix and Shoryu Ramen announced a Final Fantasy VII Rebirth tie-in promotion. Starting on February 29, 2024, the restaurant will offer themed items while supplies last.

There are no photos of the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth items being given away at the restaurant. However, people who eat at Shoryu will get a coaster and placemat with art inspired the game. It also didn't note if certain locations are limited. The ramen place's branches are in London, Manchester, and Oxford in England. There is also a location in Fukuoka, Japan.

There are a lot of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth tie-ins involving food on the way, beyond this Shoryu Ramen promotion. For example, in the United States there is an offer with Insomnia Cookies. That puts special packaging on boxes. There's a Red Bull ad with Cloud and Sephiroth in it. Nissin is going to have Donbei udon with the characters, with one of them dressed up as the mascot.

Pokemon Legends Z-A Starters We Want

Pokemon Legends Z-A won't release until 2025, so we have little information about the game at this time, including its starters. The starter Pokemon in the spin-off series' predecessor Pokemon Legends Arceus featured regional forms for three starters from different regions. Assuming this trend continues, here are the Pokemon Legends Z-A starters I'd like to see in the new seemingly open-world title.

Image via The Pokemon Company

What I want for the Pokemon Legends Z-A Grass type starter: Turtwig

To begin with, I think there are some ground rules that should play into this decision. In Pokemon Legends Arceus, we received starters from Generations 2, 5, and 7. Given how recent Generation 9 is, I'm going with the assumption Game Freak won't double dip into those four generations at this time, though it is possible. Couple this with the fact this new game takes place in Kalos, presumably the starters won't involve Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie, either.

This leaves Generations 1, 3, 4, and 8 as the best candidates for the starter Pokemon in this new game. With that said, there are two Grass type starters I would like to see return from those generations: Turtwig and Treecko. Turtwig feels ripe for a regional Torterra evolution with Fairy as its secondary typing, since Gen 6 originally introduced Fairy. Treecko would also make sense, but it would most likely have to get a new Mega Evolution form for its regional version.

Image via The Pokemon Company

What I want for the Fire type starter: Scorbunny

When it comes to the Fire-type starter, I don't see a lot of options working here. Charmander and Scorbunny make the most sense to me, given the parameters, but I am leaning more towards Scorbunny in this instance. The adorable bunny makes sense for a regional, possibly futuristic, form that makes it something like a dual Fire and Electric type.

Though Scorbunny comes from the nearby Galar, this doesn't discredit its potential inclusion in this game. After all, the Hisui region featured a regional form of Cyndaquil, a Pokemon from down in the Johto region. Plus, the potentially futuristic setting of this game could help with this as well.

Pokemon Legends Z-A Starters We Want Piplup
Image via The Pokemon Company

What I want for the Water type starter: Piplup

Finally, there is the Water starter Pokemon, which I may be the most excited for. The two best options for this particular entry feel like Piplup and Squirtle. Piplup just fits the vibes of Kalos so well. After all, it has a regal penguin appearance and references to Napoleon Bonaparte in both Empoleon's English and Japanese names. I could also see a lot of possibilities for its new secondary typing, such as Ghost, Ice, or Ground.

On the other hand, there is also Squirtle from Generation 1. Like Piplup, it sticks out as a great starter to build around for this game that would match well with Scorbunny and Treecko or Turtwig. I could see a regional Blastoise gaining the Steel or Dark typing.

Regardless, a Pokemon Legends Z-A starter trio like Treecko, Scorbunny, and Piplup or Turtwig, Scorbunny, and Squirtle would make it quite hard for me to choose who to go with. Hopefully, we don't have to wait too long to find out who the official starter trio is.

Pokemon Legends Z-A will release for the Nintendo Switch family of systems sometime in 2025.

Studio Pierrot WcDonald's Anime Shorts for McDonald's Appear

The new Studio Pierrot WcDonald's McDonald's anime shorts run has begin as part of the Savory Chili WcDonald's Sauce promotion. The first episode is available online in Japanese or with an English dub, and the first of four manga chapters is online.

Each week, a different sort of story with new characters will appear. Each one naturally promotes the new type of sauce. (It has chili, garlic, ginger, and soy sauce in it.) The first episode involves Mitero and Hashirune racing to get to McDonald's to get the nuggets and the new sauce first.

Here's the first episode in Japanese with subs:

And here is the English dub:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6APZr00v0s&ab_channel=McDonald%27s

As for the manga, people need to scan the QR code on the bag of McDonald's food to get access to each of the weekly manga chapters. The first is available now, with the second arriving on March 4, 2024.

In case the studio's name sounds familiar, it is because Studio Pierrot has been making anime since 1980. In addition to the new McDonald's WcDonald's anime shorts, it worked on major adaptations like Black Clover, Bleach, Blue Dragon, Hikaru no Go, Naruto, Boruto, Saiyuki, Sanrio Boys, Tokyo Ghoul, Urusei Yatsura, and Yu Yu Hakusho. It also worked on Bleach, Naruto, and Yu Yu Hakusho game cutscenes.

The second McDonald's episode and chapter will appear on March 4, 2024. The third follows on March 11, 2024. Things wrap up on March 18, 2024, as that's when the final anime episode and manga chapter appear.

Review: Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons Offers a New Crop of Nonogram Puzzle Game

We've seen Bokujou Monogatari puzzle games in the past, but Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons marks the first collection of nonogram puzzles based on the series. It feels like it should fit, in a way, given the series did start out with sprite-based entries on systems like the SNES and Game Boy. However while this is fine enough, it doesn't feel as well executed as the Picross series or similar sorts.

There's no story or actual farming to Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons. Rather, you're going through 350 nonogram puzzles, and five collage puzzles that unlock as you complete the smaller ones, that are inspired by the series. You'll be presented with an empty grid that features context clues that hint at which spots need to be filled. Once you mark all the correct boxes, the finished image is revealed. (You'll also get a record of your time.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99Yu0ySpqOY&ab_channel=RainyFrog

The gimmick here, besides getting to see how the simplistic pixels come together to represent an element from the series, is how other farming elements end to being tied into the affair. The icons showing if you used certain hint elements like clue roulette are shaped like the farming tools from the series. As you complete puzzles in the different categories like farm, villagers, animal, or crop, hearts will show up. Time "passes" as you complete puzzles, showing new years and days and a growing farm in the background. There's also an Almanac with details about different characters and elements from the game that fills as you complete puzzles. Also, music from the games are used as background themes.

The thing about a nonogram game is how part of the enjoyment comes as you start to perhaps recognize the image as you start to complete a puzzle, and Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons is terrible at that. While some crops or animals ended up being a bit recognizable, most of the times I didn't recognize what I was discovering. Even when it was finished, I'd have to squint at the finished pictures for some characters to discern who who the heck I was staring at. Part of this I think stems from this pulling from newer entries, as well as some of these people not being recognizable when scaled back to the simplest measures.

At the very least, many of the quality of life elements you expect from such a game are present. You can turn on a timer. There's a clue roulette for getting a hint for a row and column. Hints can be enabled for rows. You can have an autocounter enabled. It is also possible to check for mistakes or have rows auto-complete when you've marked all the correct boxes.

However, my biggest complaint comes when you get into the larger puzzles. Anything over 15x15 becomes so difficult to read. There is an option to maximize the puzzle to eliminate the quick tips toolbar at the bottom of the screen, but it isn't enough to really help. Some sort of zoom function really feels mandatory for anything over 20x20.

The thing about a good nonogram game is when you can actively see the picture come together as you tick the correct boxes. Jupiter is great at this with its various Picross games. While this Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons puzzle game can be an entertaining and challenging diversion, it was rare that I would deduce what I was looking at as I completed each of the nonogram puzzles. This is entertaining enough and includes quality of life features you'd expect, but it isn't handled as well as something like Picross S Genesis & Master System Edition.

Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons is available for the Nintendo Switch and PC.

Next Final Fantasy XI Event Is The Doll Festival

Hinamatsuri isn't until March 3, 2024, but Square Enix already kicked off the corresponding Final Fantasy XI The Doll Festival event in-game. The returning activity is live now and brings back the furnishing and item rewards.

As in real-life, there will be doll displays in-game for the event. People who go to certain spots will see the new decorations. They'll be able to take in the scenery and visit with a Moogle.

Here are the six spots you can go to in order to check in with The Doll Festival Moogles. Note that only three of the spots will also have dolls on display.

  • Bastok Mines: I-9
  • Northern San d'Oria: D-8
  • Southern San d'Oria: J-9
  • Windurst Waters: F-5
  • Windurst Woods: K-10

As for what you can get, it's random. So you'll need to keep checking in with the Moogles every day. The Festival Dolls furnishing is a recreation of the Hinamatsuri dolls for players' places. You can also get Bonbori lantern furnishings. As for the items, there are four kinds of Rice Cakes. The varieties are Hume, Elvaan, Mithran, and Tarutaru.

As a reminder, the other February 2024 update for the game already arrived. It added to both the Ambuscade and Master Trials.
