     Despite Stalker 2's

It's been a bit of a rollercoaster of an opening day for Stalker 2 - but then again, its entire development has been far from plain sailing. First came some extremely varied critic reviews, then came reports of some pretty concerning performance issues and bugs, but spliced in between all of that is some immense popularity. Despite its issues, it is enjoying massive player counts on Steam, cementing itself as one of the biggest PC releases of the year.

In previous years, the wait for Ranked Play to hit the latest Call of Duty title has been far too long, often arriving two or sometimes three months after launch. Black Ops 6, however, is bucking that trend and has committed to launching its ranked experience within a month of the FPS game's release date. Final Fantasy XIV Mobile Gacha

Final Fantasy XIV will be coming to mobile devices, and while some users may assume this version of the game will include gacha, it won't. Final Fantasy XIV Producer Naoki Yoshida (or Yoshi-P) revealed in a video published on X (formerly known as Twitter) that players won't need to worry about rolling for gear.

You can watch the clip below:

https://twitter.com/FFXIV_MOBILE_JP/status/1859174861723332905

However, this doesn't mean the mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV will be entirely free of microtransactions, only gacha. Yoshi-P did dive into monetization and did state that the goal for the game is for players to be able to enjoy it to it's fullest without heavy monetization. That said, we've yet to see the structure Final Fantasy XIV mobile will adopt. This being potential battle passes, and so forth.

A potential release date has yet to be shared, though playtests will be held in China sometime in the future. After that, the game will release worldwide. More information will more than likely appear in the future, which includes when playtests could occur.

Final Fantasy XIV is available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC, and FFXIV Mobile is in development for Android and Apple iOS devices.

Dragon Ball 40th anniversary website opens

Shueisha and Bandai Namco have opened a new official website to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Dragon Ball. The site is available in Japanese and English. In an official tweet, Shueisha noted that it will launch numerous projects throughout the 40th-anniversary year.

One of the articles it posted on the anniversary day featured a look back on Dragon Ball milestone covers in several Weekly Shonen Jump editions from around the early 1990s. The same article also included Akira Toriyama's illustration for the franchise's 20th anniversary in 2004 and a message for the 30th anniversary in 2014. Unfortunately, there will be no new messages from the Dragon Ball creator for the 40th anniversary, since Akira Toriyama died due to an acute subdural hematoma on March 1, 2024.

Besides the manga series, the website also contains a section dedicated to updates on Dragon Ball games Bandai Namco has released. When the website was just published, it featured a free trial of Dragon Ball Daima's Mini Goku in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2. People who have the game on the PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, or Switch can try playing with the character even without purchasing the "Future Saga Chapter 2" DLC on November 20-27, 2024.

The publication of the website on November 20, 2024, coincided exactly with the debut of the manga series in the Japanese Weekly Shonen Jump magazine on November 20, 1984.

Sword Art Online Fractured Daydream Cross Platform Compatibility Confirmed

Sword Art Online is certainly a guilty pleasure of mine. The first half of the original season and Season 3 Alicization have a special place in my heart as some of my favorite seasons of anime of all time. But all things must come to an end at some point. It is high time for the final new season of Sword Art Online and 2025 feels like its last shot.

For the record, the last season of proper SAO was Season 4 War of Underworld that concluded in 2020. That was more than four years ago at the time of writing. That may not sound like a ton, but it is quite a lot considering the biggest gaps before now between seasons was between Season 2 and 3. That was also four years.

If you redeem a new Sword Art Online: Fractured Daydream code, you can get an outfit inspired by SAO theme song singer ReoNa.
Image via Bandai Namco

The problem, though, is we have no release date or formal announcement of an upcoming season. Waiting five years for a new season is some Attack on Titan-level patience and it shouldn't happen. 2025 certainly feels like the last time Sword Art Online will feel relevant enough to garner a new season and it just needs to happen.

To make matters worse, as of this year, we are now in the official SAO timeline. In the anime lore, the original Aincrad game came to an end in 2024, which we are now in. It has also been a whopping 12 years since the first season dropped. There is no reason to keep fans waiting this long, especially considering how close to the end it is.

Sure, the light novel series is still going in the midst of the final arc known as Unital Ring, but that equally needs to wrap up soon. It is in its seventh book thus far, which is coming close to matching the full length of the Alicization arc. Given how weak Season 4 and the conclusion of Alicization was, it is only more frustrating SAO isn't returning yet.

Then there is the matter of other similar anime. Attack on Titan started after Sword Art Online. And even with the infamous wait for that series, it still managed to conclude long before Season 5 of SAO. The same goes for Tokyo Ghoul and its four-season adaptation of two different manga series. But, to be fair, those are series that started around the same era as SAO.

Sword Art Online
Image via A-1 Pictures

What about series that came long after Sword Art Online's beginning? Equally notable and popular series like Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer, Black Clover, Boruto, Oshi no Ko, and even My Hero Academia are done right now, at least in manga form. All of these series started after SAO and several of them even have many more anime episodes as well. Heck, even One Piece is in the final stretch and could finish first.

With the prevalence of virtual reality and AR in culture today, there is no better time to bring back Sword Art Online. Any longer, though, and it has the chance to come back with a whimper. To help, Gun Gale Online Season 2 is happening right now in the Fall 2024 anime season. It is doing just as great as the first season and is filling a nice gap right now.

But Gun Gale Online Season 2 should only be the start of the return of SAO. It feels like a neat appetizer for the main event next year. Plus, it would help the other aspects of the franchise, such as video games. The games have been in a slump for a few entries now and being able to fully adapt the Unital Ring arc alongside the anime would be an excellent opportunity.

Sword Art Online Project Alicization
Image via A-1 Pictures

It is high time for Sword Art Online to come back with a new and, hopefully final, season in 2025. Next year feels like the final opportunity for this series to stay relevant and popular. It already feels almost too late if it wasn't for the ongoing Gun Gale Online Season 2. If Aniplex and A-1 Pictures waits past 2025, it may not even be worth going back to Kirito, Asuna, Alice, and the gang for the community and company alike. The return needs to be announced now.

Sword Art Online is available to stream right now on Crunchyroll.

Review: Death Note Killer Within Starts Investigations Among Us

The concept behind Death Note Killer Within is great, given it uses everything we know about the manga and anime and adapts it into an Among Us style social deduction game. It works reasonably well, and I never had issues finding a match. It even plays smoothly. However, the details get in the way, ranging from things like being forced to silently watch your chalk outline if you're killed or seeing a match immediately end if one person leaves or is disconnected due to other reasons.

As in games like Among Us, Death Note Killer Within hinges on everyone doing their best with the random roles they are given. Kira (Light Yagami) and Kira Follower (who looks like Misa Amane) want to eliminate criminals, L's Investigators, and L. So Kira holds the Death Note, uses it to write people's names in it after either getting their IDs or getting IDs from the Kira Follower, and build up their progress bar. The Kira Follower can steal IDs for Kira or hold the Death Note so if one of them are arrested, the Death Note and IDs aren't on them. Both can also cause distractions to "force" L and L agents to areas of the map. The Kira forces win if L is killed or their gauge fills.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNfuze29zjc&t=190s&ab_channel=BandaiNamcoEntertainmentAmerica

Meanwhile, L and the Investigators just need to investigate the situation and find Kira. Like Among Us, this means essentially doing sorts of tasks in Death Note Killer Within by doing things like working together when L commands it and talking to NPCs to find out if Kira acted in an area. Of course, during meetings you need to discuss and determine if someone should be voted out for suspicious behavior and perhaps even arresting someone. Meanwhile, L gains even more power, as he can use cameras to watch the scene, force joint investigations, and create decoys to protect investigators.

It works as a gameplay loop, though a lot is being thrown at you at once and it can be complicated. It involves people paying attention, investigating, and looking for opportunities to catch people off guard. Knowing there are always only two Kira individuals in play can make it more difficult in larger groups, since they can be more easily hidden. Also, given how involved roles are, it can feel more complicated than Among Us at times. Though honestly, I do prefer the minigames there to the investigation execution here. Among Us also handles death better, as dying in Death Note Killer Within means you just are forced to sit and stare at the chalk outline of your dead body until the game ends and can't follow anyone else around.

The thing is, the actual gameplay isn't really what gets in the way of enjoying Death Note Killer Within. It is some issues that can keep it from being playable. A recurring problem I experienced in Death Note Killer Within is that it is far too easy for a game to abruptly end. If one person leaves, the whole match is over. You need to completely restart and hope that the next folks showing up are more reliable. Even when playing with friends, it became a problem due to randoms also joining. It's the most frustrating thing. I get if it was Kira or L dropping out, it would be a problem. However in one match this happened I was L and it occurred. In another, after consulting with people I knew who were in that round, the people who were Kira, Kira Follower, and L were all still around.

Though, this might not be because someone is maliciously leaving the game. I noticed this was a more evident problem when I ticked the box allowing crossplay. When that was turned off and I was playing with only PC players, it was a little better. I still ended up getting kicked out of about 50% of games, but it could have been worse.

I would also say that the initial community for Death Note Killer Within isn't ideal. You can opt for a game with no chat. However, it is necessary to help accomplish goals. With it on, a match with random players can feel stressful at best and deeply unpleasant at worst. In one match, I ran into some folks just screaming at everyone. In another case, someone was a jerk to me because they realized I was a woman once I started talking. Though mostly, the reaction to my being a woman was to possibly being hit on? But also, it's difficult to accomplish things and get things done when everyone is shouting and off-topic when proximity chat kicks in or you head into a meeting. This isn't on Grounding or Bandai Namco and the companies even brought up the reporting function as a means of calling attention to people behaving inappropriately or cheating, but sometimes it feels like a losing battle.

Death Note Killer Within is better than I expected it to be, but is also a game where your experience hinges on other people's behavior and actually getting to complete a match. If you are only playing with people you know, everyone is on a PC, and you all are committed, it can be a lot of fun! If you aren't, then good luck! My enjoyment tanked pretty severely once random players got involved in my matches, and I suspect it isn't an isolated issue. If that problem gets fixed and we see more reaction to reports about bad behavior, I think it could be a solid 6/10. But because it becomes so difficult to actually finish a round, it might be better to wait for a patch.

Death Note Killer Within is available on the PS4, PS5, and PC

star rail aglaea

HoYoVerse has released the drip marketing for Aglaea, who will be a new 5-star character in Honkai: Star Rail. She will be a Lightning Remembrance character, marking her as the first playable character on the Remembrance Path.

This is the first time that we heard of Aglaea, and she will likely be an important character in the new world we travel to after Penacony. Her title is the "Weaver of Gold" and her Divine Authority is Mnestia, Chrysalis of Gold. There's a lot of information in her character description that doesn't make a lot of sense right now, as there are a lot of terms that don't exist in the game yet.

Because there haven't been any Remembrance characters in the game yet, it's hard to guess how Aglaea might work. However, Remembrance is an existing Path you can pick in Simulated Universe. In Simulated Universe, Remembrance focuses on Freeze, lowering enemy Effect RES, and Dissociation.

We only know Aglaea's Japanese, Korean, and Chinese voice actresses. Her Chinese voice actress is Chu Yue and her Japanese voice actress is Aya Endou. Some of Endou's previous roles include Yelan in Genshin Impact, Komugi in Hunter x Hunter, and Chihiro in Persona 3 Reload. Meanwhile, Chu Yue doesn't have a lot of major roles in her filmography.

Honkai: Star Rail is readily available on the PS5, Windows PC, and mobile devices. Aglaea will make her debut in Honkai: Star Rail some time in 2025, which is also when The Herta will become playable.

Madoka Magica Magia Exedra delayed to Spring 2025

People who want to play Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Magia Exedra will have to wait longer until the game is finally made available. Aniplex published a new statement in both Japanese and English that it has delayed the release of Magia Exedra from 2024 to Spring 2025.

Aniplex also noted that it delayed the Magia Exedra release because it wanted to ensure a better quality for the game when it eventually came out. This is a rather common reason Japanese publishers mentioned when they delayed their game releases. But with the release date still yet to be confirmed less than a month and a half until the end of 2024, there have been uncertainties on whether Aniplex could release the game within the initial 2024 window.

Aniplex first revealed Magia Exedra in April 2024. It is slated to replace Magia Record, which had already shut down in Japan in July 2024. The company later revealed that it will also release Magia Exedra simultaneously worldwide in English with a PC release on Steam in addition to mobile devices.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Magia Exedra will be available worldwide for iOS and Android mobile devices, as well as PC via Steam, in Spring 2025. The seasonal window would usually run between March and May 2025.

Fortnite OG will have its own separate battle pass, just like Lego Fortnite

Over the years, Fortnite has become notorious for its constant barrage of cosmetics and crossovers, many of which are housed within its battle passes. Well, some big shifts are on the way for battle passes, as Epic looks to more closely align the main Fortnite experience, Fortnite Festival, Lego Fortnite, and its upcoming return to the golden age of the game, Fortnite OG. In a new blog outlining these changes, Epic has confirmed that Fortnite OG will be getting its own separate battle pass away from the main battle royale.

This free Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 seems too good to be true, and it probably is

Temu, the Chinese mega marketplace, already has a reputation for using heavily discounted deals to attract new customers, but what about an entirely free Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060? One lucky Reddit user is claiming they grabbed just such a free Nvidia graphics card in a Temu sign-up deal, but before you rush to Temu yourself, there are a number of huge red flags that make this story much less clear cut.

It's time for a big dollop of realism to ruin a potentially incredible story. The best graphics cards from Nvidia can be very expensive, so it's a wild west out there if you're hunting for bargains. We've seen plenty of fake or misleading GPUs that aren't what they seem littering some Chinese e-commerce sites. This Redditor might have been lucky, but it's also very possible that they've scored a fake.

Best Warzone VPN for easier lobbies in 2024

Call of Duty: Warzone continues to build upon the amazing foundations laid by its predecessor, and if you're keen to maintain a competitive edge without getting matched up against someone much more skilled than you, you'll need a Warzone VPN. Think of it this way - with loads of other players out there already using one, you're at a disadvantage if you don't.

You can cultivate the best Warzone loadout, and know the locations of all the best Warzone guns, but if the other player is using a VPN to avoid throttling from their internet service provider (ISP) and to get matched up with players below their skill level, they're going to be the ones climbing the leaderboards. By using one of the best gaming VPNs, you can help level the playing field and have a much better experience in the game.

Where are the Dragon Age The Veilguard mementos? While they might appear to be collectible codex entries, mementos are the only resource you can use to upgrade the Caretaker's Workshop. Each one automatically bestows Caretaker reputation points upon pickup, letting you increase the power level of all weapons in Bioware's fantasy RPG.

There are 182 mementos in Dragon Age The Veilguard, and you need at least 140 to upgrade your equipment to the maximum power level. You can spot mementos in the RPG game by their tell-tale blue glow.      Best VPN service 2024

A VPN (short for Virtual Private Network) is a privacy tool that can help to protect your information when you're browsing, streaming, or gaming online. The best VPN providers encrypt your data safely and route it through their servers, and can also change your location to access websites and content abroad like streaming services when you're on holiday, or gaming lobbies in other countries.

VPNs are big business and have become increasingly popular as we become more aware of our security on the internet. Thankfully, as our internet privacy has eroded more and more over the years, the best VPN services have risen to challenge the invasive nature of certain algorithms and cookies. Nowadays, if you're looking for a VPN provider, you're almost spoiled for choice, with so many options and each of them provides a slightly different package.

If you're struggling to figure out which VPN is best for you, you've come to the right place. We give ExpressVPN our highest recommendation for reasons we'll get into below, but we've reviewed ten other top picks for you too, including the best cheap VPN and the best free VPN.

All Stalker 2 artifacts and how to get them

What are all the Stalker 2 artifacts? These radioactive items were once ordinary objects, but their exposure to anomalies within the Zone has imbued them with supernatural properties. Veteran stalkers will be well-versed in the power artifacts hold, but GSC Game World's sequel has plenty of new artifacts to collect and use.

All artifacts have a chance to drop from Stalker 2 anomalies, though the one you receive is random, and often depends on their rarity. However, the benefits they provide are worth the risk. All artifacts in Stalker 2 provide an active effect and at least one passive effect. Some can drastically change how you navigate the open-world game, while others provide invaluable protection to explore even the most hazardous areas.

Dragon Age The Veilguard review - a gorgeous, monotonous RPG

It's another day of perpetual sunshine on the palm tree-shaded, white sand beaches of the Rivain Coast. On this excursion, Dragon Age: The Veilguard's protagonist, Rook, fights a giant dragon. Last time, the hero and their friends battled a group of armor-plated warriors. Later, they'll return once again to investigate one of the crumbling stone fortresses baking beneath the Coast's clear blue skies. Throughout all of this, the same bright light bathes the region, the sun never moving in the sky. Nothing much changes on the Rivain Coast but the type of enemies to defeat and the twisting tropical pathways worth exploring. There's consistent beauty to the area and a hollowness beneath it that gives the impression of a land in stasis.

All Stalker 2 anomalies and how to beat them

What are the Stalker 2 anomalies? Radioactive monstrosities and hostile humans are an obvious threat in the Zone, but there is another, often unseen danger: anomalies. These pockets of space trigger an environmental effect when a person or creature enters their perimeter. These effects can be harmful, even lethal – so you'll need to know how to handle them if you want to keep your head.

Your Stalker 2 weapons are useless against anomalies, so you have to rely on bolts to trigger and reset them. While you might be tempted to avoid anomalies in the open-world game altogether, the rewards for venturing into them are worth it. Anomalies often contain Stalker 2 artifacts, and their effects differ depending on the type of anomaly that produces them. Whether you're facing them head-on or just want to escape unscathed, here are all anomalies in Stalker 2 and how to survive them.

Future AMD Radeon gaming GPU range to drop Navi name, says leak

While the next generation of AMD Radeon RX 8000 RDNA 4 gaming GPUs is widely expected to launch in early 2025, rumors are already circulating about what will come with the new Radeon RX 9000 series. Not only is this new GPU lineup reportedly going to be the first to be based on the new UDNA architecture, but it will also apparently see AMD adopting a new overarching codename for its gaming GPUs, rather than the Navi moniker the company has used since the Radeon RX 5000 lineup.

Although AMD is widely expected to leave the very best graphics card category to Nvidia with its next-gen RDNA 4 lineup of GPUs, the company is reportedly working hard to get its next GPU architecture out the door in a much shorter timeframe than the usual two years. According to the latest rumors, AMD UDNA is coming in 2026, with the new graphics cards potentially in production as early as April of that year.

Gang Beasts is one of the games I think of when I recall the golden days of video game expos, before Covid rolled up and nuked the business model. It casts you as one of several jellybaby pugilists, fighting for dominance over such locations as Ferris wheels and the tops of speeding vans. All of the characters are 1) seemingly drunk, and 2) subject to real-time physics. Your abilities consist of 1) punching, headbutting or kicking people, perhaps knocking them out for a few seconds, and 2) grabbing people and things and either hoisting them skyward like a wrestler, or hoisting yourself skyward like a toddler climbing onto Mummy's head. The only way of defeating people is to hurl them off-map.

Yes, the subtitle involves both a colon and a dad joke, but the demo is entertaining - Nuclear Dawn meets Ctrl Alt Ego, in short. The one major criticism I have after 20 minutes or so is that the flat pixelart perspective makes walls and walkable surfaces look interchangeable, and this feels more like a question of acclimatisation than a real complaint.

sonic the hedgehog 3 japanese movie cast

The Japanese cast for the third Sonic the Hedgehog movie (Sonic x Shadow Tokyo Mission in Japan) has been revealed, featuring returning voice actors and veterans in the industry. Of particular note is Toshiyuki Morikawa, the "emperor" of the Japanese voice actor industry, who will play Shadow. [Thanks, Gamer!]

The Japanese cast list for the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie is:

  • Agent Stone: Daiki Hamano (Go Onizuka in Yu-Gi-Oh)
  • Doctor Robotnik, Gerald Robotnik: Koichi Yamadera (Akiyama in Yakuza series)
  • Knuckles: Subaru Kimura (Todo in Jujutsu Kaisen)
  • Maddie: Marina Inoue (Armin in Attack on Titan)
  • Marina: Aoi Yuki (Madoka in Puella Magi Madoka Magica)
  • Shadow: Toshiyuki Morikawa (Kira in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable)
  • Sonic: Taishi Nakagawa (Kaede in live-action Kakegurui)
  • Tails: Ryo Hirohashi (Shirley in Tales of Legendia)
  • Tom: Yuichi Nakamura (Louis in Metaphor: ReFantazio)

Some of these actors are reprising their roles from previous films or projects. Nakagawa, for example, voiced Sonic in the first two films. Hirohashi has served as the voice for Tails since 2003. As mentioned earlier, Morikawa will portray Shadow in his theatrical debut. However, Morikawa was not the previous voice actor for Shadow. Koji Yusa was the one who portrayed Shadow in properties like Sonic X.

Each set comes with a pair of chopsticks and a holder, with the holder looking like the character running while kicking up a dust cloud behind them. Each pair of chopsticks uses the character's image color (pink for Kirby, yellow for Waddle Dee). They also have the character's name, face, and other symbols near the ends. When placing the chopsticks on top of Waddle Dee's or Kirby's head, it looks like they're running with them while supporting them with their little hands.

Since Kirby debuted in in 1992, he's been a very popular character in both games and merchandise. This is likely due to his very cute and simple design. Goods can range between toys, to apparel, to food. There's even an entire restaurant chain in Japan focusing on Kirby and friends, with items like Kirby-shaped hamburger or spaghetti with star shapes.

The Kirby and Waddle Dee chopsticks and chopstick holders will come out in Japan in mid-December 2024.

Blue Protocol and Gundam Evolution publisher Bandai Namco Online will be absorbed in 2025 fiscal year

Bandai Namco Holdings has announced that Bandai Namco Entertainment will absorb Bandai Namco Online on April 1, 2025. The online game-based subsidiary company will cease to exist in name in the new fiscal year.

The group originally established Bandai Namco Online in 2009 as a subsidiary of Bandai Namco Games—which has since been renamed to Bandai Namco Entertainment. The former would focus on releasing and managing online-exclusive games.

However, the online-focused publisher ended up getting infamy from the failures of its two major releases, namely Gundam Evolution and Blue Protocol. The Gundam-themed first-person shooting game had shut down simultaneously worldwide in November 2023. Meanwhile, the anime-style MMORPG Blue Protocol is slated to close in Japan in January 2025, with its international releases also canceled.

The closures of Gundam Evolution and Blue Protocol do not mean that Bandai Namco Online has completely run out of titles. The subsidiary is still managing titles like Gundam Tribe, SD Gundam Operations, and Idolish7 as of November 2024. The group simultaneously announced that Bandai Namco Entertainment will take over the management for all those titles after the merger in the 2025 fiscal year has taken place.

Bandai Namco Entertainment will absorb Bandai Namco Online at the beginning of the new fiscal year on April 1, 2025.

In the evolution of digital card games, sometimes less is more. Though similarly named, Pokemon TCG Pocket stands as a refreshing update to the Pokemon Trading Card Game. The new app effectively condenses core gameplay elements while keeping the overall mechanics an rules intact.

The physical card game is wildly popular and high-level play can be thrilling to watch even to those who don't play. However matches for casual players, myself included, can tend to feel long. These casual bouts sometimes clock in over 30 minutes. No problem if you're sitting down for a few games at your local game store. Although when you're playing on your phone, that may not be as easy.

In contrast, Pokemon TCG Pocket prioritizes brevity and accessibility. This makes the game a more convenient option for fans looking for quicker, on-the-go experiences. The game's simplified structure could give it lasting appeal as a player in the digital card game arena.

One of the main ways Pokemon TCG Pocket keeps things streamlined is by using a 20-card deck. This is in contrast to the usual 60-card decks found in paper Pokémon TCG. This not only streamlines gameplay, but deck building as well. Gone are the days of carefully balancing a mix of Pokemon, Trainer, and Energy cards. In this adaptation you don't need individual Energy cards, since you get resources each turn instead.

This adjustment brings a sharper focus to battles and allows for leaner deck construction. It also lends itself to a more efficient gameplay loop, removing the variable of energy draw. It's a subtle change, but it gives you more space to strategize around specific Pokémon and Trainers rather than waiting on resources. This can sometime bog down play in the physical game.

Another key benefit to Pokemon TCG Pocket's format is how quickly games move. Battles can be played in a fraction of the time a traditional Pokemon TCG game would take. Not only because of the instant setup time that comes with a digital TCG, but also because the game itself is faster. This makes it perfect for players who want to squeeze in a couple of matches during downtime.

Unlike other TCGs, where setting up strategies can take several turns, Pokemon TCG Pocket feels immediate because of the small deck size. The app lets players complete games in around 5-10 minutes on average, less even if you're playing bots. A clear advantage for those who love the thrill of card battles but can't always commit the time (or money) required by the paper TCG or even the digital version of the full TCG.

However, at its core, Pokemon TCG Pocket leans more heavily into the collection aspect of the game. The actual battling, I believe, was always meant to be secondary. The traditional Pokemon TCG has always had an emphasis on collecting with a large community of very serious collectors to prove it. However, Pocket treats this a little differently. The app continuously rewards players with cards and collectibles.

This is part of Pokemon TCG Pocket's charm, but also where it may feel a bit lacking for competitive-minded players. I'd argue it could use more emphasis on the battling aspect and deeper, game-defining mechanics. This could pull Pokemon TCG Pocket into closer competition with more battle-focused digital card games. If it doubled down on its fast-paced, simplified gameplay, it could compete with similar streamlined digital TCGs like Hearthstone and Marvel Snap.

Both games have a strong focus on brevity, quick play sessions, and intuitive mechanics. They also attracting a vast audience that enjoys low-commitment, high-reward gameplay. In Marvel Snap, for instance, games last only a few minutes, focusing heavily on quick, smart plays rather than a drawn-out strategy that takes time to set up.

Similarly, Hearthstone brought in millions of players by offering an easy-to-learn, tough-to-master approach to digital card games. Pokemon TCG Pocket could benefit greatly by adopting this ethos more fully. They should encourage players to engage in quick battles rather than treating combat as an add-on to collecting cards.

Pokemon as a franchise has long been about the journey. Training, collecting, and battling your way through a world of creatures. Pocket taps into this by keeping card-collecting front and center. The app's Premium Pass, which lets you open additional packs, speaks to this emphasis on collection. Pokemon TCG Pocket's structure and rewards encourage players to return daily. Not necessarily to refine their battle strategies but to check on what new cards are available. The thrill of pulling rare or favorite Pokemon definitely feeds into the Pokemon brand, but from a gameplay perspective, it can overshadow what makes TCGs great: the competition.

It seems to me that Pokemon TCG Pocket's aim is less about the mechanics of card battles and more about capturing that excitement of collecting. a choice that makes sense given Pokemon's universal appeal. However, Pocket's battle system is surprisingly engaging for something so simplified. By shifting even further toward battle-centric gameplay, The Pokemon Company International could reframe Pokemon TCG Pocket as a "serious" mobile card game contender without losing its casual appeal.

As it stands, Pokemon TCG Pocket captures a fine balance between easy, accessible fun and collectible appeal. With some tweaks, it has the potential to provide the same depth of strategy and creativity that defines the best digital TCGs out there, making it more than a novelty for fans of Pokemon. It's possible Pocket could one day represent a proper evolution of the Pokemon TCG experience. One where battling stands on equal footing with collection. When it does, it just might earn its place alongside giants like Hearthstone and Marvel Snap.

Pokemon TCG Pocket is available for Android and iOS devices.
