Minecraft update fixes lag spikes and archaeological mistake

Minecraft update Snapshot 23W16A is packed with plenty of changes to dig through, with changes to Trail Ruins and Sculk blocks, a new interaction for the adorable Sniffer, and a fix to one of the most frustrating lag spike issues in Minecraft. Perhaps the most fun improvement coming to the sandbox game, however, is a small but important name change to Pottery Shards used in Minecraft archaeology following feedback from a real-life archaeologist.

New Overwatch Hero Lifeweaver Kinda Sucks, and That's Ok

It has been just over a week since Lifeweaver was added to Overwatch 2, and he has managed to accomplish something that very few freshly revealed heroes in Overwatch's history have been able to achieve. He's really bad upon his release.

It's no secret that most Overwatch heroes enter the game completely overtuned. From Rammattra and his never ending ultimate, to the meta-defining, and arguably game-killing shenanigans of Brigitte from the Overwatch days of yore, new heroes are normally overpowered and then subsequently nerfed. The conventional thinking is that you want as many people as possible to play new heroes, so that they can catch up to heroes that have have already been established in the game. Arguably the best way to do so is to go the Rammattra or Brigitte route and make them a must pick. With Lifeweaver, we finally get to see the Overwatch team work their balancing in the other direction. This is especially exciting because, even though Lifeweaver is "omegalul trash" right now, his kit is perhaps the most interesting one in the game.

New Overwatch Hero Lifeweaver Kinda Sucks, and That's Ok

Starting with his main healing, Lifeweaver has a burst charge called Healing Volley that locks onto one teammate at a time and heals up to 65 health. It works well long range, which makes it great for topping up heroes like Pharah and Echo, and it's quite satisfying to use. Unfortunately, it just doesn't heal enough. On the damage side, he has Thorn Volley, which similarly feels good to use, thanks to its lack of damage fall-off, but doesn't have enough ammo to be viable in-game. The other issue with healing and damage is that you have to toggle to switch between them, which makes them feel clunkier to use. He does have a Rejuvenating Dash, which allows him to dash up to six meters and self heal a tiny 25 HP, but like to the damage and health moves, it feels undertuned.

Lifeweaver's Tree of Life ultimate takes a long time to charge, but is easily one of the coolest support ones in Overwatch 2. The massive space that it takes up on the map provides cover for low health teammates and heals 150 health instantly to allies, with each pulse of the tree healing an additional 50. It's a bit goofy, which is par for the course for a character that can put his teammates into a hamster ball and yoink them to safety or into a hole, depending on how much they're currently feeling. Lastly, his Petal Platform provides great utility for long range heroes like Widowmaker and overall team positioning. Being able to sneak a non-flying tank like Reinhardt or Ramattra onto high ground is super useful and adds some more chaos to Overwatch 2.

The fact that each part of his kit is fun to use should go a long way in making Lifeweaver an Overwatch 2 fan favorite in the long run. Thankfully, the dev team has already announced some tweaks that should make him more viable.

https://twitter.com/OWCavalry/status/1649131953642258432

In the meantime, Lifeweaver's only available to players who have purchased the most recent battle pass, so if you're bummed about him being overpowered you can just wait until he's free next season. My guess is by then he'll not only still have a great kit but also be incredibly overtuned. Such is the beauty of Overwatch.

Overwatch 2 is available on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 DLC Nikol and Glimmer

Nintendo shared new gameplay details about Nikol and Glimmer, two new characters that will appear in Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Future Redeemed, the DLC expansion and last batch of content in the Expansion Pass. Nikol is a young Kevesi engineer. While he is unable to use a Blade, Nikol created his own unique weapon. Glimmer is an Agnian soldier that plays music to unleash her fire powers. She bears the Core Crystal of one of the Aegis in her chest, but her relationship to it is yet unknown.

https://twitter.com/XenobladeJP/status/1649297102458200064

Nikol's class is Machinist, and he acts as a Defender for the party in the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 DLC. His weapon of choice is a Variable Backpack, a mechanical contraption that he created. His Talent Art is called Total Destruction, and it deals damage to enemies. While Total Destruction is active, damage to the party is reduced, and damage dealt by the Talent Art ignores enemy defenses.

https://twitter.com/XenobladeJP/status/1649297635227095043

Glimmer is a powerful healer and support character in Xenoblade Chronicles 3. Her class doesn't have an official localization yet, but the name roughly translates to Flame Performer. Her weapon of choice is a staff that doubles as an instrument, and its Japanese name roughly translates to Playing Staff - Heavenly Fire. Glimmer is a healer who plays music with her staff to support and recover the health of her allies. She can also use her melodies to buff the party. Her Talent Art roughly translates to Roaring Flame Heaven Performance, and restores the HP of all allies on hit.

The Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Future Redeemed DLC releases on April 25, 2023. The main game is readily available for the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo recently revealed a relationship chart featuring some of the characters that will appear in the expansion.

The tweet does not give an explanation, so there might not be any deeper meaning behind this. Square Enix also stated that the development team put a lot of effort into designing both his sunglasses and his eyes. It wanted Rude to look like a different person once he took off his glasses.

Cancel FFXIV Sub

Final Fantasy XIV is a subscription based MMORPG, this means that players must pay to access the game. And whatever reason may arise, there may come a time when you want to cancel your FFXIV subscription. While the Mog Station website may look a bit intimidating, cancelling your subscription is fairly painless.

First, you'll need to sign into Mog Station. You do this with the same information you use to log into Final Fantasy XIV. Mog Station is Square Enix's all encompassing Final Fantasy XIV platform. This is where you manage your sub, purchase items, and redeem game related item codes. On the left-hand side of the screen, you'll see the "Service Account Status" option. Clicking this will take you to the page where you can cancel your FFXIV subscription.

This is also where you can set up a reoccurring subscription, or even renew your subscription if you intend on returning to the game. However, if you're looking to redeem game time, you'll want to click on the "Registration Code" option on the website. This is where you can add game time, or enter item codes, and manage other optional paid services.

Final Fantasy XIV is available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.

Aithon FFXIV

Final Fantasy XIV offers a plethora of mounts for players to collect, ranging from meticulously constructed magitek to fearsome looking dragons. Obtaining these mounts can be as simple as going through the main scenario, or by running Savage or Extreme trials. One such mount players can obtain in FFXIV is the Aithon, and in order to do so players will need it's whistle. This can be done in one of two ways, with both being relatively simple depending on how you'd like to go ab out it.

The Aithion is a unique horse mount that drops from The Bowl of Embers Extreme. Running The Bowl of Embers Extreme in FFXIV will have a chance of dropping the Aithon Whistle, which will grant the player the fiery red horse. Thankfully, running The Bowl of Embers is extremely simple now, and relatively quick. And unlocking it can be done with ease as well. The only requirements to unlock The Bowl of Embers Extreme are as follows:

  • Must be a Disciple of War or Magic Level 50
  • Have the "Ifrit Ain't Broke" quest unlocked

From there, you will have access to The Bowl of Embers Extreme. You can run this unsync'd through the duty finder menu to breeze through this Extreme trial in a flash. However, keep in mind that if you are not running this at level 90 unsync, you will want to refrain from burning Ifrit down below 15% without doing the nail mechanic. Otherwise, you will instantly wipe and die.

Another method is to participate in the Moogle Treasure Trove event and obtain the Aithon Whistle using Irregular Tomestones of Mendacity. It can be purchased for 30 Irregular Tomestones of Mendacity through the applicable vendor in Gridania, Ul'dah, and Limsa Lominsa.

Final Fantasy XIV is immediately available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.

Gyr Abanian Plait FFXIV

Like most modern MMOs, Final Fantasy XIV features a character creation system where players can select various features for their avatar. As the game has continued, Square Enix has released additional hairstyles either through update patches directly into the character creator, or through special items used to obtain them. The Gyr Abanian Plait in FFXIV is one of the most sought after hairstyles, and there will be a way to obtain it that won't relegate players to running Heaven-on-High for a chance to get it at random.

Originally, the Gyr Abanian Plait could only be acquired through running one of the FFXIV Deep Dungeons, Heaven-on-High. Through this dungeon you would acquire drops that could then be identified for the possibility of it turning into this hairstyle. Due to the popularity of it, and the fact that it's a random drop, has made it fairly pricy on the in-game market board. That said, players will have an opportunity to obtain it through the Moogle Treasure Trove event in April 2023.

Participating in the event will allow you to obtain Irregular Tomestones of Mendacity. These can then be traded in for the Modern Aesthetics - Gyr Abanian Plait item at any of the applicable vendors in Ul'dah, Gridania, or Limsa Lominsa. It can be obtained for a total of 50 Irregular Tomestones of Mendancity, which will be a bit of a grind but an actual way to obtain the hairstyle without any kind of chance involved.

Final Fantasy XIV is available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.

Ixion Clarion FFXIV

Final Fantasy XIV allows for players to obtain unique mounts through Savage and Extreme Trials, as well as through FATEs found in the overworld. One of the most coveted mounts in obtained through FATEs in FFXIV is Ixion, the thunder horse seen in Final Fantasy X, which can be summoned through the use of the Ixion Clarion. The mount was made available through the Stormblood expansion, and was a fairly tough one to obtain, requiring players to grind out specific FATEs in The Lochs in Gyr Abania.

After completing the prerequisites to get Ixion to spawn, players will also need the Stygian Ash item to remove the protective barrier around Ixion to actually do damage to it. A total of 12 Ixion Horns will be needed in order to receive the Ixion Clarion in FFXIV through its more traditional method. 6 Ixion Horns will be rewarded for gold participation in the event, with the lowest amount of horns received at bronze rank, which is 2. After the 12 horns are obtained go to Rhalgr's Reach and speak to Eschina to receive the Clarion.

Other methods include doing the Faux Hollows weekly Unreal Trial, with the Ixion Clarion costing 400 Faux Leaves. It will take a handful of weeks to obtain the Ixion Clarion by this method. The other is doing the Wonderous Trials and obtaining a Khloe's Gold Certificate of Commendation. However, an easier method is available, albeit temporary.

Another way to obtain the Ixion Clarion is through participation in the Moogle Treasure Trove event by obtaining Irregular Tomestones of Mendacity. It can be purchased for 50 Irregular Tomestones of Mendacity through the applicable vendor in Limsa Lominsa, Ul'dah, or Gridania. This is arguably faster than running Unreal Trials for weeks on end, or by completing your Wonderous Trials. So it is advised to take advantage of this event while it's available and get the Ixion Clarion if you don't already have it.

Final Fantasy XIV is immediately available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.

The Quintessential Quintuplets Gotopazu Story opening movie but it got delayed

Mages announced that the upcoming The Quintessential Quintuplets: Gotopazu Story game will be delayed. Its original release date was May 25, 2023. However, in order to improve on its overall quality, it will push back that release date to June 29, 2023. The developer apologized for the trouble and disappointment that this delay will inevitably cause both stores and consumers.

The delay of The Quintessential Quintuplets: Gotopazu Story is not the only news Mages has about the game, though. It has also uploaded the opening animation onto YouTube. The song is "My Hero," and Natsumi Takamori sings it. Takamori plays Raiha Uesugi, who is a major supporting character and the younger sister of the protagonist. This is a new original song that is specifically for the Gotopazu Story port.

You can watch the opening for The Quintessential Quintuplet: Gotopazu Story here:

Fire Emblem Engage Alear

Results from a poll translated by Serenes Forest from Nintendo Dream magazine named Alear the most popular Fire Emblem Engage character. The poll was announced back in February 2023, and the results were published in the June 2023 issue of Nintendo Dream. Also included was a two-sided poster of ranking characters and part two of a developer interview that began in the previous issue. Alear came out on top, followed Diamant and Alfred the lords of Brodia and Firiné. [Thanks, Serenes Forest!]

The top 25 ranking characters are as follows:

  1. Alear
  2. Diamant
  3. Alfred
  4. Alcryst
  5. Yunaka
  6. Sommie
  7. Céline
  8. Pandrea
  9. Veyle
  10. Ivy
  11. Framme
  12. Etié
  13. Lapis
  14. Anna
  15. Louis
  16. Goldmary
  17. Hortensia
  18. Boucheron
  19. Chloé
  20. Amber
  21. Kagetsu
  22. Clanne
  23. Panette
  24. Fogado
  25. Vander

In addition to Alear, winning big are most of the Fire Emblem Engage Lords and their siblings, with only Timerra missing out on the top 25. Also of note is that 17 of the top 25 also join your roster in the first half of the game, which could be attributed to players having more time to get to know the characters.

Certain late joiners like Saphir and Lindon were also not included in the poll. 14 other characters did not place in the top 25. Among them are Citrine, Griss, Jean, Lumera, Marni, Mauvier, Merrin, Rosado, Timerra, and Zephia.

Fire Emblem Engage is immediately available on Nintendo Switch. An expansion pass is also available. Those looking for more thoughts on Fire Emblem Engage can read Siliconera's Most and Least useful characters.

Watch Yoshitaka Amano Draw Cuphead Art

Studio MDHR got artist Yoshitaka Amano to create new Cuphead character art ahead of the game's Japanese debut. While the game showed up in the country digitally already, the physical release occurred in the region on April 20, 2023. Amano's art is the cover art for the soundtrack included with it.

First, Yoshitaka Amano draws the Cuphead characters like the Devil, Cuphead, and Mugman while looking at Studio MDHR reference art. The brothers appear first. After that, the antagonist is designed with the brothers and Ms. Chalice with them. In the third piece, the two cups appear together. Work on the final design begins at about the 4:35 mark.

While Yoshitaka Amano is arguably best known for Final Fantasy art, the artist worked on a number of additional series. For example, he drew a Detective Comics Batman cover. He also drew a Harley Quinn comic cover. He's designed Magic the Gathering cards too.

Cuphead is available on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. So is its The Delicious Last Course DLC. A cartoon based on the game can be streamed via Netflix. People with Tesla cars can also play a version of the shoot'em up on that as well.

Golden Week Japan

Golden Week is one of several national holidays in Japan, and what makes this one so special is that is spans a significant amount of time. During Golden Week, most businesses are on holiday, which explains why news from outlets or information from Japanese developers enter something of a lull during this period. This week long holiday will span from April 29, 2023 to May 5, 2023. The reason for this extended holiday is that a handful of holidays take place during this window of time.

What are the Golden Week holidays in Japan?

  • Showa Day - April 29, 2023
  • Constitution Memorial Day - May 3, 2023
  • Greenery Day - May 4, 2023
  • Children's Day - May 5, 2023

While some businesses are outright closed during this period, those living in Japan oftentimes take this period of work off as well. Additionally, developers will hold sales during this period. For example, Square Enix held a sale for its Kingdom Hearts series, along with Final Fantasy VII Remake at a discount. Even publishers and developers such as Microsoft have begun to hold Golden Week sales within the Japanese region. Though, these largely include games made by Japanese developers, such as Bandai Namco.

This means that there could be additional sales once Golden Week appears. Those with Japanese PlayStation Network, Nintendo, or Microsoft accounts could make use of this to obtain games at a significantly cheaper price.

Golden Week in Japan will take place from April 29, 2023 to May 5, 2023.

In all, Dead Island 2 contains 33 side missions to tackle alongside the game's 24 main story missions. Naturally, these side missions become available at certain points in the campaign, so you can always tackle one if you need a break from the story.
